It is interesting how much math comes into even the most basic of like. Making things. Making almost anything. And often not numbers necessarily but proportions and geometry. I think all the time about how castles were built with geometry at the heart of it. And I use the same kind of proportional math to make socks fit. And none of my pieces are ever knit with a prime number of stitches--because you use factors to make neat colorwork and ribbing and different stitches. Idk ! I remember constantly thinking 'how the hell is THIS gonna come in useful ?' But it always does. Math is at the heart of everything, and knowing how to apply it is a tool of critical importance to Thinking Up A Shape And Making It.

have I somehow ruined myself for perfectly average movies? I watched both Robots (2023) and The Deer King (2021) and both of them were fine---Deer King was better, but suffered from trying to jam too much into a single film; Robots should have been more black-humored, delighting in its lazy sociopaths and their vaguely squalid world. But that's it, that's all they were---fine. Just fine.

Does this mean I have to watch exclusively Films now? I can't get into a movie unless it's black and white, or two hours of characters speaking sideways and having neuroses at each other?

Phew! Just disinfected the nursery with Virkon, literally scrubbed every wall, the floor, the doors, the window, as well as the brooder and brooder plate, the big crate (that I’ll use once the chicks are a few weeks old), even the trash can! I’m a bit paranoid about the babies getting sick, but that’s because they’re my babies. You know how strict obstetrical wards/NICUs are, because you don’t want to take risks with your babies when they’re just born and have such weak immune systems. I have the same philosophy. So I always change clothes when I have to go between the coop and the nursery, I wear a shower cap in the coop so I don’t get dander in my hair, and of course I wash my hands throughly. If it’s within my power, I’ll do it to keep the babs safe. I’ll even vaccinate them myself if I have to. I hope it doesn’t come to that, it’s expensive and I’ve never given an injection before, but I’ll do it.

Very interested in the whole the FL has fatal cancer thing in Queen of Tears because the doctor told her by herself, told the husband, and the FL has been having hallucinations and other symptoms. Doesn't seem like this is a fake disease. So can she live? Without it feeling like magic?

I've watched two other dramas where a lead has fatal cancer from the beginning, Doom at Your Service and Moon in the Day but both of those were fantasy. I guess they set up her giving money to research and I'll have to suspend my disbelief if that comes true (I am a medical researcher, all the money in the world cannot make research go *that* fast)

Anyway, such an interesting premise. Curious to see where it goes!

apple butter recipe 🍎

10ish apples

~1 cup apple cider (the cloudy non-alcoholic stuff)

~1 cup maple syrup

cinnamon (optional, measure with your heart)

pinch of salt

peel, core, and chop up your apples, keep the pieces on the smaller size so they're easier to break up

combine your apples and cider in a pot with a heavy bototmand place on the stove over medium low heat. keep an eye on it so nothing burns, and break up the apples with your spoon as they soften. keep cooking for about 30 mins, until it gets to an applesauce-like consistency (see the first pic). it's fine if you still have some chunks of apple at this point, it's all going to be blended later

add your maple syrup, turn heat to low, and let the apple mixture reduce and caramelize until you get something like the second pic (about 2 hrs). stir frequently so nothing burns, about every 10ish minutes for the first hour and every 5ish minutes for the second, that's especially important towards the end.

once it's reduced, add your cinnamon and pinch of salt to finish it off. you could also add some vanilla but I prefer it without

using a blender or immersion blender, blend the mixture until smooth (if using a blender let it cool a bit first so it doesn't explode 😭). it'll set to a firmer consistency & deepen in flavor as it chills. enjoy on toast, bake with it, use it in a marinade, or eat it by the spoonful to your heart's content 😌👍

The lady at the school vaccine clinic asked me what I was studying, and then after I explained my weird individualized degree asked if I was a grad student. No, I'm just unconventional and interdisciplinary enough that I sound kind of odd and pretentious by default.

Act 3: Still not feeling great, in the same ways as before, only now I feel like this is somehow a side effect of the vaccinations, despite the fact that it is obviously not.
