Monster Hunter: Pocket Edition

I (sometimes) do pixel art as well, so the next few posts are going to be some pieces I did last year. First, I wanted to design some of the monsters from Monster Hunter as if they were put into a Neo Geo Pocket Colour game; I imagined it as a fighting game where you get to play as the monsters. Another freshly edited picture of my full Barioth armor from Monster Hunter, with my Blizzarioth dual blades.

I’m going to enter a costume contest on march 16st with that cosplay, I’d like to see what I can do on stage with it. So I’m preparing a performance and stage props.

At the beginning, a Barioth is sleeping; the hunter first approach him, and then go to a chest; she open it, and look for something. She find an insect, some meat, and finally, a barrel bomb. She wake up the monster with the explosion, and use her steel dual blades for fighting the beast; after a few moves and damages taken, the hunter come in front of the stage, facing the crowd, and activate the demon mode. Then she attack the Barioth in such a wild and agressive way, and defeat him. After that, she take one of his teeth, and go craft the Blizzarioth dual blades. The end!

I have to make a few props for this performance and I hope I can do it, it’s the first time I make stage props so I hope everyting will go as expected. I’ll probably share a snippet video of the performance when the props are done.

that is a TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE hesitation to have! radobaan/uragaan are a really good example of poor divergence in similarly styled monsters. The former just feels like a heavily neutered version of the latter, and I honestly forget he exists until he rolls over me in the rotten vale lol. I guess he's okay if you want to farm a sleep weapon? maybe?? but if you want a sleep weapon just wait for the next kulve siege.

from what I've heard though, they're really trying to make the nargrexioth trio feel different from one another, as they have always mostly succeeded in doing. the only one of the three that I haven't previously fought is barioth, but I would say that narga and tigrex are classically VERY different fights.

nargacuga has always been a fast as lightning, hard-hitting monster that proves for a frenetic fight at the best of times. tigrex is all yelling and wild charges, with lots of thrashing and intense enrages. my friend and I affectionately referred to him as a screaming bulldozer.

but barioth seems like he's gonna be the azure rath of the trio. from the video that game informer put up, they were talking about how barioth is going to stay airborne as much as possible, and shoot whirlwinds around the area. probably nowhere near the degree of kushala, but it's something different the other two don't have. (and I wouldn't count on wind pressure negate working on his whirlwinds any better than they do on kush's. as in, it won't work at all.)

from what I've seen as well, i wouldn't be surprised if narga is exclusive to the ancient forest, barioth to hoarfrost reach, and tigrex wherever the hell he feels like being. I'm waiting for the moment when I'm trying to kill a bazel or something and I get run over from behind by an unexpected tigrex.

but I'm definitely hoping that there is enough difference among them that they all stand out in their own ways and each doesn't feel like a knockoff of the next.

  Capcom suggests players should begin honing their skills now, as the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion is coming to Steam on January 9th, 2020. It is already available on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. Players on Steam will be able to venture into the new frozen landscape of Hoarfrost Reach just over a week after 2020 gets going. The expansion brings the largest region in the game up to this point, and its inhabited by a bunch of new monsters for players to take on. There are also new settings, and the PC version will have revamped keyboard/mouse controls, a hi-res texture pack, customizable video options, and support for DirectX 12.

Capcom also has several pre-order options. Those who pre-order early can get the Yukumo Series layered armor set. For those who already own the game, the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion can be purchased as digital DLC for $39.99 / €39.99. There is also a Digital Deluxe edition which includes the expansion and the “deluxe kit DLC” containing a few extra cosmetic items. The deluxe edition will set you back $49.99 / €49.99. For those who do not yet own the game, there is the Master Edition, which includes the base game and the Iceborne expansion for $59.99 / €59.99.

To celebrate the Steam release date announcement, a new 4K 60FPS trailer was also released:

  Hoarfrost Reach is a snow covered land that progressively builds upon the existing story. The Elder Dragon, Velkhana, claims this place as home, and will likely not be happy to see you. The Iceborne expansion adds the new Clutch Claw game mechanic, and updates all 14 weapon types to create additional combat options for hunters. Players can ride small monsters, and there is a two-player balanced difficulty scale. They’ve also added incentive for experienced players to help lower rank hunters progress. There is also a new difficulty rank, called Master Rank. To reach it you must complete the main story all the way through Hunter Rank 16, and this includes all of the new Iceborne story and quests.

After the Steam version launches, the update schedule for the PC version after that is planned to eventually converge with the console releases. There will be free post-launch support for the expansion. The first post-launch title update for the PC version is planned for early February. “This will include the addition of fan-favorite Rajang, the Raccoon City collaboration with popular survival horror icons Leon, Claire and Tyrant, Your Room updates and more.” The second title update will be in March, adding a new monster to the game.

Six amiibo Never to Surface in North America!?  Say It Ain’t So!

I have, by most standards, a fairly impressive collection of amiibo.  In fact, I have all of them that’ve been released up this point, including the 454 official amiibo cards.  (Yes, 454: 100 per series for 4 series of Animal Crossing, 50 in the new Welcome amiibo series, 3 “special” cards that came with Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, and the single Shadow Mewtwo available with first-print editions of Pokken Tournament.)  Back in November we had a rather large bump to the Super Mario series, including the long-awaited Waluigi and Daisy, Wario in his classic outfit (much better than his updated look), and a glow-in-the-dark Boo among others (Diddy, Donkey, and Rosalina if I’m not mistaken).  Nintendo must be really excited about the upcoming Switch and the Legend of Zelda installment they have planned, because December brought us 8-Bit Link, Ocarina of Time Link, and Toon Link and Toon Zelda from Wind Waker.  

It looks like we have another wallop of Zelda amiibo scheduled for March. I guess these are supposed to work with the new Switch, because suddenly they’re more expensive.  According to Best Buy’s website (where I plan to pre-order them very soon), some of them are $15.99 and a couple are $19.99.  Best Buy even has one amiibo listed that’s not on Nintendo’s official site, which is certainly odd.  I’d tell you which one it is, but Best Buy doesn’t even have a name for it...

Between then and now, we’re going to get a very cool Poochy amiibo to add to the Yoshi’s Woolly World set and you can bet I’ve got my copy reserved at GameStop.  (It comes bundled with a 3DS version of Woolly World; they probably will make a standalone release one day, but I try very hard to stay on top of these releases.)

Overall I’d say I’m pretty “with it;” I keep up with the amiibo, try my best to get them on the first day - I know rarity isn’t the issue it once was, but it could happen and there’s no way to know which ones will be rare until it happens, so for me it just make sense to get all of them as quickly as possible.  I even started keeping them sealed in little shoebox-sized plastic boxes once I realized how they accumulated dust in all their little bends and turns.  Whether I get a Switch right away or not and by extension that new Zelda game, I’d still like to stay on top of the amiibo, for the time being at least.  The March releases will be a little pricey but not unmanageable, that is, until I found out about 6 that as of this time are not slated for any kind of North American release.

I remember whispers of Monster Hunter amiibo going back to Summer or even Spring of 2016.  And then at some point I’d spotted the first batch of 3 over on Amazon, but since they weren’t listed on Nintendo’s official American site yet, I wasn’t all that concerned and I figured I’d just wait until they popped up with a release date.  Following up on the issue, I started poking around again, and it only took me a few seconds to find 3 more damn Monster Hunter amiibo!  Wait a minute, hold up, what the hell is going on!?

Oh right, Google to the rescue...survey says...if you’re in North American, you’re shit outta luck!  Apparently these amiibo are attached to a 3DS game called Monster Hunter Stories, and there’s no word yet on when or even if this game will hit North American shelves.  There is perhaps one shred of hope...some guy said that update to New Leaf, the update that allows for integration of the new Welcome amiibo cards, also recognized the Monster Hunter Stories amiibo.

These names are even weirder. I guess there's some sort of structure to them that I'm not getting. I guess one name is the monster and the other is the rider, but I don't really get the doubled-up names.

So...who knows?  Do I just try to grab ‘em now and get a good deal, or wait and wait and wait for possibly nothing?  It’s a tough call.  And while we’re at it, Nintendo’s Japanese site has some other weird shit over in their amiibo lineup area, namely a little block looking thing and what appears to be a pack of “Hello Kitty” cards.  Part of me kinda wants to go for it, mostly because way back, Nintendo announced the Famicom R.O.B. as a Japan exclusive.  So what’d I do?  I bought one!  Several months later it was released in the US anyway, and as you probably know, this is pretty much “the easy R.O.B.” to find since the original was packaged with the Retro Pack alongside Mr. Game & Watch (with 4 swappable figures) and Duck Hunt (don’t you love how they never even got a name..,it’s a dog and a duck and together they’re just “Duck Hunt”...).

I guess I’ll need to mull this over a bit.  One thing’s for sure though, these guys are big and detailed and colorful and easily some of the best looking amiibo around.  Well, that Navirou thing is kinda goofy but whatever.  I’ll keep you updated.  In the meantime let me know if there are any good deals or any news about these fellas appearing stateside!
