So here are five, amazing classic lit novels that are not written by straight, white, American/English cis men.
1. Giovanni’s Room - James Baldwin
Tumblr media
Honestly, any of Baldwin’s books are amazing and could have a place on this list. This is my favourite, because I find Giovanni such a relatable character. Baldwin’s main goal in a lot of his fiction books is to separate black characters from the tragedy of being black, Giovanni’s Room focuses on two white gay men and it both does this from a gay perspective and doesn’t. On the one hand, a lot of the tragedy regarding the romantic story has happened within heterosexual relationships, and when Giovanni’s is executed (it’s established from the beginning)… it’s clearly because he’s a poor young man who dared to stand up against the rich older man who at best took advantage of him. In some ways, this is more to do with abuse of power from rich old men.
2. Maurice - E. M. Forster
Tumblr media
What if I told you… there was a classic queer novel… with a happy ending? And a working class queer character. And isn’t just about rich gay public school boys who keep everything behind closed doors. It took me a little while to get into it because I thought it was going to be just another book about the latter, but it’s not I promise you. It wasn’t published until after E.M. Forster died, which makes sense since it was written fairly close to the Oscar Wilde trial and prior to homosexuality being made legal in the U.K.. Also, It was inspired by Edward Carpenter, socialist, and early gay rights activist.
3. The Lottery - Shirley Jackson
Tumblr media
The gif is from The Haunting of Hill House but Nell’s story is extremely fitting to this short story. Thinking about it shakes me to my god damn core. It’s a small creepy village that has a horrifying ritual, no one does horror quite like Shirley Jackson. Similar to the Haunting of Hill House I think a lot of the disturbing nature of it comes from the people so unwilling to listen. The Lottery itself refers to the annual stoning of a person which is a tradition among the villages to ensure the prosperity of the village for another re crops and such. There’s a bit in it where a couple of old men are talking about how other villages have stopped doing the Lottery and how ludicrous that is, with added “young people these days”. This story really gets into the psychology of why people so adamantly stick to tradition and don’t challenge authority. It’s so great.
4. The Dubliners - James Joyce
Tumblr media
I actually think this is the most underrated Joyce book, and whilst I’ve heard some people have read it at school I’m extremely jealous. I always hear about Ulysses when this one is significantly easier to read, and I love how each story is about a new every day, normal person living in Dublin. It does not focus on separatism of religion in Ireland (not entirely anyway), and avoids politics almost entirely (excluding when a woman calls a journalist a west Brit). The idea was that like Baldwin Joyce wanted to depict Irish people being normal, and not to he defined by their tragedy, religion, and politics.
5. The Tenant of Wildfel Hall - Anne Brontë
Tumblr media
This is the most underrated Brontë sisters’ novel. It’s absolutely iconic. The inspiration for this novel comes from a story that Anne’s father told. He was a priest who was hearing a confession from a married woman who was being horrifically abused by her husband. She didn’t want to leave him because that would he a sin, Anne’s father told her to do it and that God would understand. When you consider how divorce was seen in the 1800s especially in religious circles… that is pretty astounding. That is essentially the main theme of the book without going into too many spoilers, it’s also about how “odd” Helen is considered because she actually shows love and care to her son (which involves a spirited debate about how all children deserve affection and closeness from their mother.)

Books I read in June and Somewhat objective recommendations but I'm very emotional and unprofessional
"The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" by my mother V.E. Shwab 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
Satan is a hot dude, main girl comes through an emotional journey to become a girlboss, there was a cat and vaguely queer characters. Relatable, I would too rather sell my soul than forcefully marry a village rando. Definitely not the best book of the author's though Imo, mainly because I'm salty because of the open ending.
"Hold still" by Nina Lacour 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
I've read my fair share of literature about grief and none of it really spoke to me and, well, neither did this book but I'm a picky bitch. What miss Lacour does excel in is atmosphere and metaphors, those were chef's kiss as usual.
"Don't stop me" by Eden Emory 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
The whole thing felt like fanfiction, sometimes not in a good way but honestly that was exactly why I read this book. Fun, smutty, very lesbian, don't read if you want something serious or realistic.
"The 6 deaths of the Saint" by Alix E. Harrow 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕
I seriously underestimated short stories before this one and got rightfully slapped in the face because I mean. Not to overstate the matters but miss Harrow ripped my heart out of my chest and devoured it before my very eyes and I sobbed in gratitude. Women! Violence! Femininity and war! Breaking the cycle of violence and expectations put on you with the hands of others!
"The lottery" by Shirley Jackson 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌖
Oh yeah, girl dinner (commentary on society, violence being shown to children from young age as norm, how far people are willing to go if they're told that it's for the greater good by a higher authority and peers, unsurprisingly relevant to the modern politics and society overall considering it was first published in 1948).

lets see, lets pair you with Steve.
But not just any Steve - Steve who's done being Captain America, done with the missions, with risking his life. He wants to live. It's his turn. He goes out to meet people, starts traveling, to get out there and have more of a social life than just Bucky, Sam and Nat. He wanted to know people who didn't risk their lives every day to save the damn world.
He meets you at a cozy pub on one of his travels. You dancing along to the live band on the small stage in the corner. He's infatuated, something about the sway of your hips and the carefree smile on your face draws him over to you, his feet moving before his brain can realize what's happening.
You let him join you, smiling at him when he gets up close, not telling him to beat it, to leave you to yourself, and he follows your rhythm well.
"Who knew Captain America was a fantastic dancer?" You'd ask.
He'd flush, telling you, "It's just Steve now."
And by the end of the night, he knew that he was finally living again, because you started something in his heart that he hadn't felt in a long time.
Excitement. For the future. For seeing you again. For a future with you in it, if you'd let it.
come celebrate with me!

Max Wright and Philip E. Johnson in Early Edition (1996-2000) Thief Swipes Mayor's Dog
S1E5
Lottery fever grips Chicago with the jackpot climbing every night. Meanwhile, Gary tries to understand why someone would want to steal the Mayor's dog.
*Given that Flanagan was manipulating the lottery, it seems sloppy to not only write down the numbers to be picked, but to leave the numbers on the mayor's desk.

DPXDC prompt. Ghost King uses Uno Reverse Card
Ghosts are not a race of evil creatures that most people think they are. And Danny was really happy when the Infinite Realms were able to make peace treaties with most countries of the human world. Ghosts, however, are a very vindictive race. At least that’s how young Phantom explained himself to Batman afterwards.
It just so happens that a couple of hours before the event aimed at expanding intergalactic unions most of the JLeague members due to an emergency call went on a mission. Which means people who had any authority in Phantom’s eyes became unavailable for a while.
So Shazam and Phantom as the most known outside the Earth were assigned to greet the guests and most importantly to entertain the visitors until the founders of JL return.
According to Phantom, Batman, being such a good detective with a bunch of backup plans, should have known that Danny’s favorite cereal ran out this morning, that he was late for first class, and that after school he had a fight with his parents. No, seriously, aren’t so-called scientists supposed to be able to admit mistakes in their own judgment? Danny got tired of being constantly ashamed of their behavior near other ghosts. It's bad enough that his authority as a ruler is sustained only by the support of those Ancients with whom he maintains friendly relations. Average citizens still doubt that he is a is sufficient to claim the throne. He’s had enough of being accused of not being a full-fledged ghost.  He’s not ready to hear rumors that he supports his parents' racist judgments too. In short, his day sucked. And all his ghostly nature now wanted to do something nasty to his neighbors to get rid of the tension.
Alien leader stretched out a hand to Phantom and Shazam. “Your Majesty Phantom, Champion of Magic. It’s an honor to meet you. I hope I learned the proper greeting gesture of the local intelligent race.”
And with that Danny’s reserve of conscience ran out. It’s a perfect moment to feed his need to be a little shit.
“The local intelligent race?’ Danny had this extreme bewilderment on his face. “Which one do you think..? Earth was the home of the Gods and of various inhabitants of the galaxy but it was a long time ago.”
Woman is clearly confused. Great. “E-Earthers. I think they’re called that.”
“Earthlings, intelligent race? You must be mistaken.” Danny faked a giggle. “Who told you that crap?”
“Phantom, what are you doing?” Batman hissed at him from an earpiece. Danny turned the sound off with a clear conscience. “I mean, seriously, there’s not a single serious study in the science library in this galaxy or any other galaxy that says humans are intelligent. Shazam, do you think they’re..?”
For some reason, Billy immediately remembered watching a man spend his entire salary on lottery tickets last week. And of course he was careless enough to shake his head and snort. That was all Phantom needed.
“Exactly. Earthlings don’t have to be intelligent to mimic the behavior of more evolved species. Surely you are well aware that Martians and Kryptonians, and many others have visited Earth at different stages of human development. My supervisor Clockwork and I have long been observing this strange species. In many ways, their behavior resembles a mixture of instinctive reactions of specimens from the 126 sectors of the nearest SBc Galaxy and several other creatures from planets of the galaxy KV59. However, even I, as an anthropologist with extensive experience of observing human species in their natural habitat, still have to explore and discover many of their secrets.”
“I do not understand. According to the documents among the delegation that greets us there are Earthlings. I mean I don’t question the scientific evidence of a respected Chronos or you, but why then..”
“Of course you don’t! It’s really quite simple. For the purity of the clinical experiment, which we are conducting now, it is necessary that Earthlings feel themselves ostensibly full participants of the «society» consisting of members with developed intelligence.”
“So, any luck, colleague?” Shazam, who realized that Batman would now skin them anyway, decided to at least participate in this theater so that the punishment would be at least deserved.
“Well, we’ve certainly come up with some interesting preliminary insights about the adaptive capacity of the human brain in limited contact with Martians. Of course, humans do not have real emotions to be full participants in communication, but their attempts and zeal are very inspiring.”
~~~~~
Meanwhile, Fentons watching a live broadcast of what was supposed to be an interplanetary friendship encounter are beginning to realize that if trying to punish a rebellious human teenager has always been difficult for them, the attempt to control the behavior of the 14 y/o half-ghost may become a nightmare not only for them.
Jack: Honey, I think Danny’s still a little upset about our old theories about the ability of ghosts to feel or think.
Jazz, sitting between them with the face of a man resigned to the chaos around her, could not restrain the sarcasm: Really? Why would you think that?
I hit the hormone lottery and got e cup boobs. I was happy at first, but now my back is really starting to hurt and I wish they were smaller
I will not consider a breast reduction, though. That would spit in the face of so many of my sisters. I will bear this burden until the day I can trade them to another tgirl garfield style
can i have some of that (not all of it tho, my back already hurts enough) my hormones have done this fun thing where over the last like half a year my boobs have just started getting smaller and smaller again and its been weirding me tf out (i have not changed my hrt regimen at all). tho i keep putting off actually trying to get to the bottom of this so its sort of on me as well.
