The strange, funny thing with Irulan in the books is that because he specifically tried to write her as an unattractive suitor - a mediocre Bene Gesserit (if there ever were one!); a footnoted Princess; preoccupied with her histories, of 'a literary pretension'; can't even get the Emperor to put an heir in her (an inversion of the oversexed male ruler); sucks so hard that she can't even go through with assassinating him - that she subsequently becomes a more interesting character.

Chani is written in such a fashion as to be unchallenging and beautiful and supplicant (so I welcome the alterations in the film), ever-attending and lovely and constantly forgiving, maybe representative of Paul's tenderness and humanity (again - this is why I think the film running with this idea is good; his humanity is challenging), but all the same it really does lack tension as an effective afterthought.

If I had to point to a single narrative weakness that would probably be the one I would point to - particularly with my own special feelings about the way romance ought to narratively function. But what I find interesting here is that in trying to make her unsuitable he made her more interesting. Because flaws benefit character, humanity benefits character!

What I find even more interesting is the tension between a sexist ideal of romance and the alternative nonideal, and how one benefits a romance more than the other, ironically. From a more neutral perspective, it's interesting how something - at least in my interpretation - he specifically tried to do ultimately worked against itself in the exact opposite way intended.
