So there's this weird thing that Bleach just never really adequately or really directly addresses about the existence of artificial souls... We know Artificial Souls exist, and we know from the same basic tech Mod Souls were made. From some derived or parallel procedure we get Mayuri's Nemuri line of advanced Created Souls, and supposedly also what Urahara did that made Ururu. What's weird is that these don't appear to impact the balance of souls between worlds and that creates this weird blurry line about what does and doesn't get to count as a Real Soul, with weight in the cosmic balance...

So one of my first issues is that we know shinigami get asauchi with uniformly blank tsuba, and the unique patterns manifest with the imprinting of a sword spirit and obtaining shikai. And Nemu, although she never uses it, does in fact have a zanpakutou of her own, and more generally is considered a shinigami in rank and role, so surely she must count as "real" by any practical measure. This does also bring into question, what a zanpakutou spirit even is.... very late in the game we're told that Nimaiya makes zanpakutou by merging many strong souls together.... (which raises a whole lot of questions, but we need to table most of those for now..) So then does a zanpakutou count as a soul as far as the balance of souls is concerned? This is further muddled by the fact that Nimaiya's sword harem just e x i s t as humanoids, rather than swords, and with what appears to be full autonomy of body and personality and will. And then there's also the issue of Yachiru......

But he brings this up while explaining how White serves as a zanpakutou due to the way Aizen made him, or at least his heart. This distinguishes him from other hollows and particularly from menos, who as it happens are also amassed from many strong souls, but specifically from other hollows, and by being consumed. White is in effect a synthetic vastolorde and a bootleg zanpakutou, but vice versa that suggests Vastolorde are a sort of naturally occurring zanpakutou. (i have no idea what that even makes the superchunky from hell)

This actually already lines up with a lot of what we already knew about arrancar, and effectively means the gillians are a wild asauchi, the adjuchas a living shikai, and vastolorde roving bankai; those hollow forms are in turn crammed into swords to create the arrancar zanpakutou and is why resurreccion are just returning to hollow-like form.

There is also the little loophole of whether or not hollows count as one soul per body, or if they carry with them the full weight of all the souls they've consumed. It would actually make for a reasonable justification of the shinigami's self appointed roles as monster slayers if it means preventing uneven accumulation of souls. But it's not directly addressed. Moreover, there are a lot of weird cases of hollows/arrancar themselves being capable of creating lifeforms that achieve a range of autonomy, yet don't appear to attract anyone's attention as a kind of anomaly??

Starrk and Cienz both separate whole other arrancar from themselves, and this seems to very distinctly count as a creation of an entirely new soul, to the point that they have their own zanpakutou. Starrk even has his cero wolves, which don't come across as distinctly autonomous and don't seem to count as their own souls, but do seem to be implicitly derived from the same ability that produced Lilynette in the first place. There's also Ruddborne and the Exequias that dwell in a weird grayzone of new lifeform creation. And also Dondochaka has Bawabawa?? What even that is?? And Szayel has his random monster throne things?

[so i drafted this months ago and jsut let it sit. clearly there's not conclusion here but i have no idea where i was going with this rant... i've sort of ended up covering bits of this in other random posts since, but i dunno seems like a waste of effort to just scrap the whole thing now. so here ya go, have some weird half formed scraps of thought...]
