exiting the cabinet's pair in borgin & burkes in 1991 and apparating into the manor, the wards recognizing him. appearing before his younger self tired, gaunt and traumatized.

his younger self is afraid of this man who looks to be on the brink of madness, whose hair is limp and unkempt, whose eyes rove, unable to focus on one point. this man who reminds him so much of his aunt bella, but looks so much like his mother. like himself.

17-year-old draco is frantic and desperate. shaking his younger self in bouts of anger and fear. "you must listen," he repeats. don't trust father. forget everything he's taught you. there's no honor in the malfoy name. blood purity will destroy you. don't trust him. listen to me. please. please listen to me.

the moment you can, you need to leave the manor. it's not safe here. you can't trust anyone, not in slytherin, not in the sacred 28. they'll turn you in. find somewhere safe, away from here. please listen.

Harry awoke the moment Hermione left the bed. He braced himself up on one elbow and squinted across the room after the blurry form of his wife. Sunlight streamed through the cracks in the curtains. He could tell by the level of brightness that it was likely rather late in the morning – almost noon, probably. 

He heard the sound of retching and immediately got out of bed. He snagged his glasses off the bedside table and hurried to his wife’s side. She was bent over the toilet as she threw up. He knelt down beside her and pulled her long curls back.

He gently ran a hand along her back.

“Potions wore off,” he guessed.

Hermione groaned.

“I didn’t even think about it.”

“None of us did,” she responded weakly. There was a pause and then she began retching again.

“Is she okay?”

Harry looked up and was unsurprised to find his younger self wide awake. He was a little startled to see the genuine fear and horror on the boy’s face.

“It’s okay, just morning sickness.”

“Hermione’s never mentioned anything like this.”

“No,” Harry responded and wasn't sure if he should laugh at the boy's innocence or lament Hogwarts’ poor education, “it’s a pregnant witches thing.”

His answer did not seem to soothe young Harry’s anxiety and panic.

“Daddy?” Teddy yawned as he appeared next to young Harry. He rubbed his eyes. “Should I get Uncle Ron?”

“That’s a great idea, Ted. Down the hall. First door on your left.” Teddy hurried out of the bathroom. “Harry,” he said to his younger self who looked like he was working himself up into a proper panic, “can you go downstairs to the kitchen and get Hermione a cup of water?”

“I don’t know where that is?” his younger self stressed.

“That’s okay. Down the hall. Take the stairs. It’s on the first floor, just beyond the two big blue doors in the main hallway. Got it?”

His younger self nodded quickly before turning and hurrying out of the room.

“He's adorable,” Hermione groaned, head resting in her hand as she sat by the toilet.

Harry grinned. “He looked like he was going to cry. He's already very attached to you.”

“It's the maternal magic,” she sighed as she lifted her head.

He kissed her forehead. “Think you can get back in bed?”

She groaned. “Yes. Help me up.”

Harry magically cleansed her mouth and held her hair back as she washed her face. He was just tucking her under the covers of the bed when Teddy and Draco arrived.

“Ron went for groceries. I can get your potions.”

“Perfect.”

Harry conjured a parchment with a list of the potions Hermione needed. “Buy only the best.”

Draco scoffed. “Obviously.” He turned and headed back out as young Harry arrived.

“The glasses were dusty,” he informed his older self seriously. “I didn't see any soap, so I washed the cup under the water.” 

“Magical homes tend to use spells for soap,” Harry explained as he took the cup and passed it to Hermione. “Washing the dust off with water is probably good enough. Thanks, lad.”

“Are you okay?” the child asked Hermione.

“I am, sweetheart. Thank you for the water. Come sit. We can read a bit until Draco comes back with my potions.”

“You trust Malfoy to get your potions for you?” his younger self demanded.

Harry sighed. “He’s not a Malfoy anymore,” he reminded.

His younger self scowled.

Harry lifted the boy onto the bed without warning. He bounced on the bed with a huff of amusement. 

“Sit,” Harry ordered. “Let me see if I can’t find you a book to read.” Harry searched the bookshelves in the bedroom, humming as he went. “Ah ha. Seems some other Potters had similar habits to us.” He plucked a children's book of fables from the shelf and brought it over. “There you go, boys. You read to Hermione.”

“Where are you going?” his younger self demanded.

“To clean the kitchen so I can make breakfast when Ron returns. You want to help?” 

His younger self wrinkled his nose and shook his head. “I'm good, thanks.”

Harry scowled at this, “So you’re just going to run away?”

“It’s not like that.” Draco said at once, he had expected this argument, and he had his reasoning prepared. “This is the only chance I’m going to get to keep my family safe. I can’t let the Dark Lord ruin our lives like last time.”

“So help me beat him,” Harry pleaded, “then he won't be able to hurt anyone.”

“I can’t,” Draco insisted, knowing he had to make this clear to Harry, “I can’t stay, my mother has told the Dark Lord I'm ill but that won't last forever, and he’s already told her he wants me to take Father’s place.” he met Harry’s bright eyes in the dark and said plaintively, “Harry, I have to go before it all happens all over again.”

Harry just stared at him, Ron continued to snore and Draco felt like something dark and empty was spreading through him, curling around all the ill advised affection he’d let grow for this boy, for Emmeline, even for the house-elf. All of it.

He was an idiot.

“Where will you go?” Harry asked eventually.

“I can’t say, I don’t know exactly,” Draco said automatically, but he folded under Harry’s pleading look, “America.” he murmured.

Harry gave a tiny nod, “Will you write?”

“Of course.” Draco replied at once, even though he knew it was a lie. If he was going to be hiding from the Dark Lord, sending owls to people in Britain would be foolish.

Then suddenly Harry was hugging him, his arms were warm from sleep and full of a fierce emotion that scared Draco. He tentatively returned it, placing his hands gingerly on Harry's back, frightened of the way Harry clung to him.

“I owe you,” Harry said, his breath warm on Draco's neck, “I see things differently now. Because of you.”

If Draco had been shocked by the use of his first name, it was nothing to how he felt now. Harry thought he owed him?

Harry finally released him, but he didn’t move away, his face was so close to Draco’s and Draco didn’t understand how they had gone from fighting, to saying goodbye, to this, because this was certainly something, Harry had leaned closer again, his intent obvious, and instead of nerves or excitement Draco felt only fear, his heart seemed to have stopped in his chest, he could not even draw a breath, because being kissed by a fifteen-year-old Harry Potter while Ron Weasley snored three feet away was just too strange.

But then Harry’s lips pressed briefly against his own and it was over, Harry was pink in the face, but grinning. “I've been wanting to do that for days.” he said sheepishly.

“Well,” Draco blinked, dazedly, “now you have.” He smiled back uncertainty, completely bewildered by what had just happened.

“Good luck.” Harry said, after several moments of awkward silence, “in America, I mean.”

“You too,” Draco returned lamely, his mouth was so dry, he had no idea what to say, “Just don’t die, okay?”

“I’ll do my best.” Harry grinned even wider, but the corner of his lips seemed to tremble. The smile was brittle, something that Draco could understand quite easily in that moment.

Harry meets the Mauraders fanfic recs

Ok, so this list was born after I read the beautiful fic called The Devil’s White Knight. It’s about Harry traveling to an alternative universe where Voldemort was killed in his youth, where his parents are alive and his whole life played out differently. He still has his memories though, and a whole lot of trauma, so he goes through a journey of getting to know a family that loves him unconditionally while struggling with everything else.

I was obsessed to say the least. I started looking for similar fics that gave me the same feelings and that explored Harry’s trauma and power as the key to Voldemort’s defeat, and how he fit into his new life. Thse are some I enjoyed a lot.
