The election is in 10 days.

This weekend I heard an anti-fracking activist say "so long as there is gas in the rocks below us, and people in the world who want it, our land isn't safe."

I can't bear it. I really can't bear it. We banned fracking in this country. Then the green party were elected on the basis of banning fracked gas imports (no fracking here, no fracking anywhere). Which they did, for four years. Then the talk turned to "energy security in europe" and right before leaving office they signed a law which will expediate the construction of a facility for importing (mostly fracked) gas from the USA.

I watched 10 different politicians campaigning for votes, in front of a room full of climate activists. Every one of them said: ok we're going to build this facility but we won't use it. it's for energy security. in case of emergencies.

Even the socialists said this. Even the greens.

Four years was all it took! Four years and they are speaking the language of imperialism and capitalism. Four years, in a fight that won't end until the world doesn't need gas.

So long as anyone in the world needs gas, our land isn't safe. So long as anyone in the world wants gas, our fight is not over. So long as we don't have sovereignty of our lands. So long as any authoritarian anywhere has a long enough lever to pressure us. We are not safe.

The anti-fracking activist didn't seem stressed. We got fracking banned! We even got the importing of fracked gas banned! We are networked with people fighting fossil fuel extraction all over the world. We are part of a broad social movement. That movement is largely led by people who know degrowth and decolonialism is the only way to make all of our lands safe.

I want degrowth anyway. I want decolonialism anyway. But its painful to feel how much I need them. This place is stitched into me by a million threads. It would kill me to see it destroyed.

I can't accept a world where our land is not safe. I live in a world where our land is not safe.

Almost no one in that room was under 30 years old. Is my generation strong enough to shoulder the fight? How about the next one? Will my grandchildren be able to relax about it? Will anyone, ever?

The answer is: no. The fight may be easier at times but it will never be over. We go on.

I’m sure no one cares, but this certainly has been a day with the rwde. Wishing death on someone over a fictional character is wild, but I’m not surprised. And I’m pretty sure the mods of tumblr or the people blocked me because the rude comments I received can no longer be seen and I can’t see any of the reblogs anymore from most of them but I still can see the death threat, but from the others I have what they said in my notifications so everything I experienced is below and these people will seriously act like they’ve done no wrong lol when they attack someone over their opinion and claim fans are exaggerating. Yeah okay buddy. Tell that to the death threat I got

i wonder if there's the potential for a solution to the doxxing fucking over marginalized people specifically thing and/or the some people only being able/knowing where to engage with community online thing if we we were able to like. weaponize the relative lack of actual anonymity in the opposite direction.

like for one thing, instead of doxxing just resulting in problems from others in person, using that information to actively support the person instead, and for another for the other potentially more targeted use of the internet to find people to engage with in person (although that one you'd have to be even more careful about in case it worked in the opposite direction. I'm just thinking it would be nice to have something more structured/widespread than happening to find out your internet friends are in your local area, that could potentially be used to circumvent people not meeting in third spaces/other issues people have initially finding local community in person.)

It would be nice if instead of exclusively finding offline solutions/telling people how to be more careful we could also use what's often part of the problem to our advantage when it does happen. Like, having a way to address it that isn't only preventative.

i read about this story when it first came out, hours after the incident on the live updates page

the instagram post doesn't cover it, but she had an elder sister, layan, 15 years old who survived with her at first, and was on the phone with a red crescent operator as they were flanked, stuck in the car between tanks.

she's not mentioned as missing in this post because she was gunned down while on call. the recording is available online, and i don't know if her screaming or her screaming stopping suddenly was worse.

her 6/7 year old sister, now the only survivor, was on the phone with the operator for 3 hours, constantly asking to be taken away because she was scared. (I'm not sure why this article says she's 4, all other sources I've seen have mentioned her as 6 or 7.)

I've seen some genuinely fucking horrible things about this story from people who don't even want to believe the war is real. i hope she is alive, at peace, and in safety with the red crescent team that was dispatched to her.
