Jack's Burger Shack (dining week)
Hey guys!
Let's backtrack a little. .. to Edm Downtown Dining Week, which happened at the end of March. .. lol sorry!! >.<
One of the participting restaurants was Jack's Burger Shack. They started out in St. Albert (original location), & now (since a few yrs ago) has a 2nd location in Downtown Edmonton. I've been to neither, same with my companion DQ, whom I came here with. So we were very exciting to try out this place since we've heard very good things about it :D
Tumblr media
It was a Tues later-lunch when we came but bcos it was dining week, the place was packed. Thankfully, I managed to snap a photo of this wall that features their sign while they were cleaning between diners.
Tumblr media
The place was very narrow & not a lot of seating available; however, it's neat, cozy, & I like the range of furniture/decor.
Tumblr media
My friend DQ in the bottom left corner taking care of her daughter haha
So during Dining Week, participating restaurants have a pre-set menu. Jack's was only open for lunch service & they had 2 menu sets; we got the $15 option, which we thought was a better bang for your buck. (The $25 option is an 'upgraded' version of the $15 menu, with a diff burger & poutine instead of fries with aoili).
Tumblr media
The rootbeer float. Omg, can't remember the last time I had a float. .. probably 2 decades ago?? Can't say I am a fan but I finished it regardless.
Tumblr media
The fries + melt aoili & the 5oz burger (the original one). The melt aoili was good; not sure about the fries. I like my Costco fries :P
Tumblr media
The burger though. .. amazing! 11/10! Very thin & crispy. They make them 'smash' style on a flat grill like a teppanyaki so not only does it cook fast, but also you get a good smokiness from it as well. Well-seasoned & . .. loved it! I've never had burgers so thin before. I hope more can be done with this patty - like, I dunno. .. banh mi? On rice? Honestly, it has Asian style street food vibes.

“Those that escaped Edmonton could think of nothing worse, clearly, than being stuck in Alberta. Often repeated, but oversimplifications miss how people chose Edmonton, carved out lives, and make the places accessible for those who wished to live there.”
"Assessment of Edmonton's livability is all relative. These cities should not just be judged as wanting by outsiders and expats. They were destinations for small-town queers who believed that Edmonton and Calgary represented significant improvements on smaller towns and rural areas.”
“"Queer life was not merely possible in Edmonton, Alberta; one could thrive there but you had to be tough. And additionally, it helped to be determined, creative, and energetic - those with fewer resources tended not to fa[re] as well."
----
just a handful of quotes from korinek that i am rotating in my mind like a cow.
i keep thinking about that anon a while back suggesting that the ucp won because of the exodus of queers and leftists from alberta (???) and i think that person must be awfully young because (not even touching on this mythical ability for anyone to pack up and move anytime) we’ve always been here and we have been here through 80 years of conservative government and we will be here after. And sure, some of us leave, but a lot of us, either born here or who come here from elsewhere, choose to stay.
I think a lot about the American desire to “escape to Canada” whenever things “get bad” (on both sides of the political spectrum!) and it just reminds me that there’s this idea that there’s always a better place somewhere and it really ignores the fact that those better places have to be created by Someone, and how many people not only ignore the histories of wherever they came from but also wherever they’re going to. and I get it, its hard to read histories when they’ve been scrubbed clean deliberately, but histories have to be built just like communities do and the first place to start is wherever you are.
(and sure, I did “escape” from one of the most stringently conservative areas in the province to Edmonton. not everyone’s narratives are like mine, and you will find people who get more acceptance from their rural communities than in the city, and there’s also lots of quotes on the tendency to underestimate rural acceptance but that’s another post lol)

Edmonton, AB (No. 10)
Jasper Avenue is an arterial road in central Edmonton, Alberta, and is the city's main street. Jasper Avenue has no official street number but is aligned with 101 Avenue with the majority of its length. Jasper Avenue is a major public transit route as several of Edmonton's busiest bus routes travel along it. The LRT travels underneath Jasper Avenue between 99 and 110 Streets. It is named after Jasper Hawes, manager of a North West Company trading post of Jasper House in the early 1800s, located in present-day Jasper National Park.
Jasper Avenue begins at 125 Street in the community of Westmount as a local residential street. One block to the east, 124 Street turns east and becomes Jasper Avenue, which functions as its unofficial western terminus, with 102 Avenue taking over as the main east–west artery to west Edmonton. Jasper Avenue passes the community of Oliver through mixed retail and high density residential. East of 109 Street, Jasper Avenue passes through the downtown core and is home to many of Edmonton's oldest heritage buildings (for example the Hotel Macdonald) and some of Edmonton's tallest office towers, including Canadian Western Bank Place and Rice Howard Place. East of 97 Street, Jasper Avenue departs from both the downtown core and the 101 Avenue alignment, running northeast along the North Saskatchewan River valley through the community of Boyle Street. On the Latta Bridge it passes over the Latta Ravine, between 91 and 90 Streets. At 82 Street, the roadway turns north; however Jasper Avenue continues east as a local residential street through the community of Cromdale, ending at 77 Street. The Jasper West area (west of 97 Street) is one of the major retail, living, commercial, and entertainment districts of the city.
