As Benjamin stands in the middle of his bedroom in nothing but underwear and a band t-shirt that, due to his size, looks more like a crop top, exposed navel, midriff and all, he looks nothing short of ridiculous.

Told you it wasn't, Mike's voice echoes in his head, which he ignores much like he did at the beginning because his head is killing him, and acknowledging the demon only makes it worse.

"Look… you can take one of mine; I really need to go get some aspirin. Do you--want anything?"

"Back off, will you?" Adam tells the other, hoisting himself up and dusting his pants off. "I'm fine." he might not be, actually, having landed right on his ass in a desperate attempt to grasp at his camera before it fell. At least he caught it. Whatever soreness he's gotten out of it will heal - a broken camera, however, now that costs an arm and a leg to mend.

"Go tend to some sick victorian child or somethin'. I can walk." He says, hand pressed against back to try and suppress the pain long enough to walk where he needs to. "Unless you're here for pictures. Then tell me what ya want, drop your number and give me a day or two to uh-" he winces a tad - fuck, what the hell did that fall do? "get back to ya."

"Then how do you do things?"

House asked out of pure curiosity. He had yet to finalize the plan in his mind and decide what he could offer in return, if he doesn't manipulate his way out of paying. 

"What about free consultations? Health care ain’t cheap!"

"Okay, yeah, I'd consider it." They have to hold themselves back from immediately jumping to say yes. Because really, it would not take all that much from them to complete the task, but...

"The question, of course, is what do I get out of it? Is like, the praise of a job well done supposed to be the reward? Because like, that's not really how I do things."

He's a doctor. They want money, obviously.

"I have no need for hobbies." As a child, every waking moment was dedicated to studying and training. For her parents. Now, she survives. For herself. She has never needed to have her own interests. It was never of any importance. Why waste her time on superfluous pursuits? "I train. I hunt."

valley grins at nadine's dramatics, can't help it. they're just so annoyingly endearing. but they still roll their eyes at them. can't be too besotted, now, can they?

❝ oh my god, you're sooo dramatic. ❞ arms cross over their chest as valley stands over nadine, eyes narrowed and lips quirked into a little smirk. they offer their hand to the other after giving them a few seconds to, like, get it all out. ❝ come on, we've got milkshakes to get. ❞

the frown does not last very long, and turns into an annoyingly proud grin within a second or two. "the worst person you know? that hurts!" give them a second to pretend as if they've been shot in the chest, hands grabbing it as they fall to the ground. "all this, because i felt a little affectionate. what a way to die..."

❝     those     puppies     keep     our     children     from     screaming     like     little     banshees.     you     should     appreciate     them     more.     ❞     nini     says,     eyeing     the     defund     paw     patrol     shirt     nadine     was     wearing.     she     was     out     with     the     kids     and     noah     had     wanted     nothing     more     than     to     be     held,     so     they     had     sat     down     in     the     food     court     of     the     mall     when     they'd     run     into     nadine.     lola     was     playing     happily     on     her     tablet,     but     noah     was     getting     grumpy     and     acting     like     he     wanted     another     nap,     and     nini     didn't     want     to     have     to     deal     with     a     tantrum,     so     they'd     been     snacking     on     fries     and     resting     before     she     was     willing     to     get     them     both     back     into     the     car.

OPEN: NADINE.

"there is absolutely nothing wrong with my shirt. what're you talking about?"

steve stares at nadine, heart pounding in his chest a little - eye flicking up and down their face. "i ... don't think it's a bad idea." he admits quietly, almost as if he's afraid if he speaks too loudly - it will break the confidence that allowed him to admit that.

OPEN: NADINE HUNT.

"seeing you tonight... it's a bad idea, right?"

"i - what? NO." steve is quick to response, offense coloring his tone, mouth dropping open. of course they can't exactly see that, but still. the offense is written all over his face. "of course it's not, god. it's because a spider is what bit me and gave me my powers. and there's this dude called spider-man in these comics one of my ki - ... a friend of mine reads. so we thought it was fitting." a heavy sigh escapes him. "point is, it is so not a fetish thing."

“okay but like… why spiders?” no, their suit is really not much better. they don’t even really have a good insignia or anything, now that they think about it. they’ll blame comic writers for that. “please tell me it isn’t a fetish thing.”

"What am I supposed to analyze? I like to think that I have a great relationship with my brain. I’d hate to find out that it’s hiding things from me."

He’s also too lazy to consider doing that much over this discovery, even though the prospect of mind-reading is nothing if not interesting… and with that, he gets an idea.

They give a so-so gesture with their hand. "I dunno if I would say better. The slur would've been had a little more comedic flair. I feel like you'd work in a couple of nice adjectives, too."

Yes, they are fully grinning the entire time saying this. While it is said with a bit of a joking tone, the compliment is genuine. But this only lasts for a few seconds, before their expression goes right back to begging.

"Come on. Do you not even want to do it for like... analysis purposes? You discover mind reading is real and you're not like... I dunno like, what do doctors do? Do you wanna write a paper on it, or something? Not even a little like... exploratory surgery?"

valley pouts, but they don't let go of nadine's hand. 'cause, well, they aren't wrong, right, is the problem. valley was thinking about it, and they don't totally hate it now that the other finally did grab their hand.

It’s both a joke and a threat, because House’s no stranger to reclaiming anything that's been said to him before and make it his own.

"And for the last time: No, I am not letting you touch me—my thoughts are for me."
