The Piranha Plant That Stole a Character Slot
All I can do is laugh at the salt.
I love this character. We need this kind of character more than we do another prettyboy sword user.

Flygon the Run
Stupid quick thing that helped me get over my art block earlier in the month.
I honestly don't get the same kind of satisfaction from drawing this kind of low-detail stuff as I used to. Higher detail stuff takes more time to draw but it's more rewarding. However drawing stuff like this lets you brush up on the basics in a short amount of time, so there is value to doing artwork like this. Flygon is ™ and © The Pokemon Company. Bayleef - Paint Practice
The proportions are intentionally distorted - this was more for colouring practice. I actually did this a while ago. In terms of technical ability it's not perfect but it's better than I remember. Clearly I have the ability to do this kind of work - just not necessarily the time. Bayleef is ™ and © The Pokemon Company. Artwork © David Nathan Dawkins.

Internet Arguments
So I heard IDW picked up the Sonic license after Archie comics dropped the ball.
Yeah. I can see this happening - and I think you can figure out what they might be arguing about.
Apologies if you're noticing a drop in artwork quality - I used this as an opportunity to practice linework in a bitmap artworking program. I'm still getting a handle on bitmap artworking.

See the Universe in a Ladybird's Wings
Unexpected successes in bitmap painting.
I honestly didn't think I had this level of ability in me. Apparently - when I have the appropriate reference material to hand - I can replicate things with terrifying levels of detail. I just need to be able to dedicate the time and focus to a piece in order to be able to generate these results.
If only time and focus came so easily.
Strangely I drifted back away from bitmap painting after producing this. I really need to do it more often.

Logo designs for a comic project I'm helping out with. Sonic the Hedgehog Online is a fan continuation of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics - the original intent was to pick up from where the comic universe was rebooted following legal disputes brought up by previous contributors to the comic (which I'm not going to go into here), but since the future of the present Archie Sonic comics has become questionable who knows what direction the fan project might take? The logo is actually a little bit too close to the original source material for my liking - but I was working to the very specific demands of my clients and this is what they wanted. I did have to rebuild the entire logo from scratch - and it was through my own effort that I made the 'ONLINE' part sympathetic to the pre-existing text. So I'm okay taking credit for the work I put into this - even though a lot of it is truthfully recycled from an older logo design which I had no hand in creating. Diana Vin-Belle's Lighthouse
A character as unconventional as Diana Vin-Belle (my mad scientist space dolphin with cybernetic prosthetic legs) needs just as much an unconventional means of transportation for getting herself around in.
It's almost as stupid as that guy who gets around in that blue telephone box thing that nobody uses any more. Except it's not stupid.
Diana really is my favourite character. I'm gonna have to write a story for her one of these days.

Fina the Aviacean - Blockstyle
Vector drawing of Fina the Aviacean.
Shortly after completing this I decided her design needed an overhaul - so really it's pretty much already out of date. I'm undergoing a lot of changes lately and it's being reflected in my work. I think I'm heading toward another quantum shift in my creative output. I really want to get my vector artwork and my bitmap artwork to come together and produce a new kind of art style (for me). Starting Over
So I've finally gotten around to committing myself to learning how to bitmap artwork - which basically means starting over learning how to draw because I've been a vector artist for as long as I can remember. Trying to draw in bitmaps rather than in vectors is completely counter-intuitive for me. It's like trying to play an accoustic guitar if all you've ever played is an electric keyboard... I think.
Also Bulbasaur is a Pokemon I never really chose as a starter Pokemon.
If you're not catching my meaning - I'm saying this is a deep, meaningful and symbolic piece of art.

Skull Study
Ah, skulls. I never really did draw or paint one until I sat down and produced this. I learned a lot about different brush strokes from this piece. It was fun (I'm not joking). Considering how much I used to hate life drawing... I was really taken aback by the amount of enjoyment I got out of this piece. Artwork © David Nathan Dawkins.

Autumn Leaf
A few months ago I finally set about learning to draw/colour using bitmaps rather than vectors. This was my first attempt. It looks unremarkable, but I actually learned a lot from it - including something unexpeted... I actually don't hate doing life studies.

Diana Vin-Belle's Lighthouse - In-Situ Concept Art and Details
I actually designed this way back in 2013. I actually think these earlier drawings of the 'Lighthouse' concept are as good a design as it needs to be.
I love how spindly and crustacean-like the legs look in walking mode.
The in-situ drawings use the artwork from the original designs but the background art was all drawn from scratch today.
I actually came up with all these location concepts on the spot off the top of my head. Yay.
