singledad!Sukuna x neighbor!reader-Sukuna and Yuuji really want you to join their family! role reversal from my other series, think this will just be a one-shot though. Yuuji is Sukuna's brother but he's raised him since he was a baby and Yuuji calls him dad.
cw: Sukuna is manipulative and also a murderer but everyone's happy and you're both aware so it's okay. this is really just fluff.
"I....want you to be my mommy?"
Sukuna scowled as Yuuji looked more confused than ever.
"No, no that is not what you're saying kid. You're just going to tell her about how the other kids' mommies on the playground make you feel left out."
"But they don't, Megumi's mommy always gives me a snack when I'm hungry!"
"That's not his mommy, that's Megumi's daddy," Sukuna corrected, wondering if this was just a hopeless endeavor. He could have easily followed a plan this simple when he was four, but Yuuji was too soft. This was what happened when you raised a kid in a stable, loving environment. They lost the ability to go for the jugular when needed.
"But Megumi's daddy calls him mommy?" Sukuna didn't hold back his groan. You were going to be coming back from your morning walk any minute. He didn't have time for Yuuji to not get basic directions or to explain the dynamics of that Gojo family.
"Look when we go out there, just look sad and I'll handle the rest."
"But I'm not sad, I'm happy. We're going to the park and Megumi's mommy is bringing mochi today!"
"Shit kid, do you want a mom or not?" Sukuna asked, trying not to roll his eyes as be bent down to snap on the velcro straps on Yuuji's light up sneakers.
"I don't need a mom, I have you," Yuuji said. He looked uncharacteristically defiant and Sukuna couldn't help feeling proud of his little brother.
It had been touch and go when Yuuji was a baby. Sukuna had still been a kid himself and they didn't have any money and Yuuji's mom was even crazier than Sukuna's. Their father nowhere to be seen. Since Sukuna and Uraume had spread the pieces of his corpse around the city.
Sukuna pushed these memories aside and ruffled Yuuji's hair. "I know you don't need one, we only need each other." Yuuji nodded, his little head moving with all his conviction. "But it might be nice, right?"
Yuuji seemed thoughtful before finally biting his lip and looking down at his sneakers. He tapped them, making the red and black lights flash.
"She's really nice, I like her."
"I like her too," Sukuna said and he heard the sound of your sneakers slapping against the tiled hallway. "So let's go and look sad, okay?" Yuuji nodded, determined now and Sukuna grabbed his backpack before the two brothers went out into the hall.
You were just taking your keys out of your bag and you turned to the brothers, a smile on your face. "Good morning gentlemen, it's nice to see you. Heading out?"
That was when you noticed Yuuji's downturned expression. Sukuna saw your face shift into one of concern and he resisted a smirk.
Sukuna cleared his throat and squeezed Yuuji's hand. Good boy. "We're heading out to the park, you know the one by the high school."
"Oooh, that's nice. You like that park, right Yuuji? You said it was the biggest one in the whole city," you crouched down so you could look Yuuji in the eye and Yuuji seemed to forget he was supposed to be sad for a minute because he jumped up and down, the lights of his shoes flashing in the dim hallway.
"Yeah, it has the best swings too!" You ooohed and aawed appropriately while Sukuna tried not to smack his head against the wall. Maybe he and this kid weren't related after all, fuck.
Yuuji seemed to notice his expression because he stopped jumping to look down at feet. He put out his lower lip and used the tip of one of shoes to mess with a scuff mark on the linoleum. It would have made a more pathetic visage if his shoes weren't still lit up.
"Yuuji," you said, coming closer so you could kneel on the ground in front of the boy. The sight of you on your knees did something to Sukuna, but he pushed it aside to see what the brat had in mind. So far, he wasn't impressed with the performance. "Is something wrong?"
"It's just," Yuuji let out a sad sigh that wouldn't get him a gig in a car commercial. "Megumi and his mommy will be there and it makes me feel sad because all the other kids have mommies and I don't." God, there was no way you could be buying this, Sukuna looked at you and saw that your eyes looked a little watery.
Huh, look at that. Maybe he wouldn't have to kick the kid out, after all.
"I'm sorry Yuuji, that must be hard," you said and you reached out and swiped out where Yuuji had even managed to shed a tear. Sukuna felt so proud. "But I know that your dad is really excited to take you and the two of you are going to have so much fun!"
"Could you come too?" Yuuji asked and you bit your lip. Yuuji looked up and batted his little doe eyes at you. "It would make me really happy if you came with us. We could all have fun together."
"I wouldn't want to intrude-"
"It wouldn't be intruding," Sukuna cut in. "If you're busy though no worries, I know we'll have fun just the two of us. Right, Yuuji?"
Yuuji bit his lip and Sukuna could tell he was torn between showing how excited he was to spend time with his dad and being 'sad' so you would join them.
You looked between the two before seeming to come to some kind of decision. "If you don't mind waiting while I change, I'd be happy to join you two. Should I bring anything?"
"I think we're all set. We'll wait outside for you," Sukuna said and Yuuji went up and gave you a big hug that you returned.
Sukuna took Yuuji outside to wait for you, the kid occupying himself with a mostly washed away hopscotch chalk sketch. Sukuna alternated between watching him and texting Uraume who was claiming to be over him and his nonsense. Sukuna would take it more seriously if Uraume hadn't been saying that for going on twenty years. He knew they loved him, fucking sap.
Soon, but not soon enough, you came bounding down the stairs. A scarf tied around your neck, your turtleneck exposed by the open top button of your coat. He couldn't keep letting you be single, looking all pretty like that. He was too greedy for that.
Besides, looking the way you did and knowing your big heart, it was just a matter of time before some nice loser tricked you into settling with them and he just couldn't have that. The idea of you taking someone else home to your warm apartment with it's million throw blankets and a cookie jar, an actual cookie jar, he was convinced you kept stocked up just for Yuuji, made him want to commit another murder.
"Ready?" you asked and Sukuna nodded while Yuuji took your hand in his right and Sukuna's in his left.
"Let's go!"
Yuuji's enthusiasm was contagious and the two of you chatted all the way to the park. Sukuna saw some people shoot you all looks as you walked. Sukuna was used to people viewing him with suspicion, even fear. His tattoos, dyed hair and general demeanor making people cross the street to avoid him. Something about you and Yuuji seemed to balance him out though and people reacted as if they were just looking at a cute family going out on a Saturday.
You didn't seem to notice either way and just continued talking to Yuuji about some new anime for kids Sukuna had probably had to suffer through but hadn't retained any memory of.
As soon as you all got to the park, Yuuji took off with barely a good-bye. You seemed concerned and Sukuna bumped your shoulder with his. "Don't stress, he just sees the Fushiguro kid over there. See, they're already fucking around."
He pointed to where Yuuji was chasing around a scowling dark haired boy the same age as him. Sukuna didn't buy the scowl for a second.
He had once run into the kid and his weird dads at the grocery store and the kid had scolded him when he figured out Yuuji wasn't with him. Sukuna would have knocked the kid down a peg if he wasn't actually four years old and if his 'mommy' didn't low key give him the creeps. Sukuna was pretty sure he wasn't the only person guilty of homicide currently at this playground.
"That's so cute," you cooed and Sukuna nodded along while he took you over to some picnic tables. Unfortunately one of them was already occupied.
"Aww if it isn't Sukuna. How nice it is to see your lovely face on a Saturday morning!"
"Gojo."
Sukuna was ready to leave it there but then the bastard got up and walked over. His partner continued sipping on a large cup of boba, watching from his seat although he gave you a little wave.
"Who is this, new girlfriend?" Gojo asked tilting down his sunglasses to look you up and down.
You laughed and introduced yourself while Megumi's parents did the same. Gojo grabbed your hand when you held it out and kissed the back of it, his lips curved into a smile even as he lingered, his fingers clearly holding onto where your pulse would be. Sukuna moved closer to you and put a hand around your waist, the gesture a clear sign for the other man to back off which Sukuna knew Gojo understood because the bitch fucking smiled at him.
Sukuna didn't necessarily take any of Gojo's flirtations seriously. He flirted with every mom and dad on the playground, including him when they first met. He'd even seen him flirt with the guy who worked the ice cream truck so egregiously the kid had looked on the verge of passing out. His partner never seemed bothered and Sukuna wondered if he was just that secure in the relationship or if he hoped someone would finally come along and get the annoying man away from him.
As usual though, Gojo lost interest quickly and went back to his husband who didn't say anything as Gojo lay across his lap like some kind of housecat.
"There are children here," Sukuna said. Mostly out of spite and not jealousy that the two of you weren't curled up like that.
"Don't be homophobic," Gojo said and you snorted before looking innocent when Sukuna shot you a look.
"Alright, let's go see what Yuuji's up to." Sukuna went along with your excuse, mostly just because he liked the feeling of your hand in his. The two of you wandered closer to the playground where Megumi and Yuuji were currently engaged in a game with some other kids that Sukuna couldn't have possibly guessed the subject of.
The kids alternated running around the large structure, disappearing into tunnels, jumping down to hide underneath slides and behind climbing walls. Every time Yuuji popped back up to view he would wave and call out to you both. Sukuna still felt a little warm whenever the kid called him dad and the look you gave him after made him feel caught.
"So, I can see why Yuuji was so sad those morning. Megumi's parents are just vicious monsters," you said and Sukuna was so taken aback he knew his expression didn't hide it well. You smiled and swung your hand that was still in his, turning so you could look at him.
"I don't think that's what the issue was," Sukuna managed and you nodded.
"Right, it must have been because he's so lonely," you said before the two of you were interrupted by the sound of children's ecstatic laughter. You both looked to where Yuuji was now being chased by an entire horde of children.
"I'm the curse, you have to catch me," he yelled out and the other children screamed and laughed as they tried to grab him. Yuuji had never had a hard time making friends and that was very evident in the way he got kids of all ages, even the quiet ones to join in on his game.
"You can have friends and still be lonely," Sukuna argued and you gave him just the softest look. It wasn't fair for you to see through his schemes and still look at him like that.
"Are you lonely, Sukuna?" You got closer to him, your hand still got in his and you were so warm. "Maybe I should come home with you, then?"
Sukuna couldn't have stopped himself from kissing you even if he wanted to, which he didn't. He let go of your hand so he could cup your face in both of his palms. You moaned your approval into his mouth and he responded by nipping your upper lip, pulling you up to meet him as he leaned down to kiss you. Sukuna was about to risk another arrest by taking you right here in the park before a familiar voice called out to the both of you.
"Hey now, there's children here."
Sukuna turned to give the infuriating dumbfuck a piece of his mind when you distracted him by pulling him back to you and giving him a quick peck on the lips. He could leave the fight with Gojo for another day, he supposed. He knew he'd win anyway.
You're smiling and you look so happy and Sukuna doesn't feel the least amount of guilt in getting you here. Even if you knew it was a trick.
Although.
Did this mean you knew that all those times he was "stuck at work" and needed someone to watch Yuuji were a lie too? Or that he actually could cook and the one time he set the building fire alarm off had been because he started an actual fire and not just him burning dinner and two of them didn't actually need you to invite them to dinner so much? Did you also know that your radiator hadn't just stopped working randomly but he had broke it, knowing you would call him because your super never answered, and when he said a part was still missing and you would just have to stay the night at his and Yuuji's place-
Sukuna looked at you more closely and you just kept smiling.
As Yuuji called for the two of you to come help him and Megumi on the swings, Sukuna wondered if he had ever trapped you, even once. Or if you had just let him catch you.
Watching you push Yuuji as the boy screamed for you to go "higher, higher!" he decided he didn't care. Fuck, it might just be better. Knowing you were maybe as crazy as he was.
shout out to the dad at the park today who had the audacity to play with his toddler and have a cute dog at the same time.
also I liked the end of this so much I may just write a prequel of Sukuna and reader taking turns gaslighting the other into a relationship, we'll see.
Edit: wrote the prequel, here!

learning together
• parental Gojo looks after an ill-attached Megumi with abandonment issues
〰・♡・〰〰・♡・〰〰・♡・〰〰・♡・〰〰・♡・〰
Megumi is a secretive boy. It seemed to Satoru that he hid everything. If Satoru wanted to know anything he would have to go through Tsumiki, the boys sister, to learn even the smallest of details. And even then, she rarely had anything but a smile to share.
For example, Satoru had been looking after the two little kids for months before he learned that the two of them only had one worn pair of shoes each, that and only a few articles of clothes.
"Well, why didn't you say anything?" He had scolded after seeing the blisters on Tsumiki's feet one night while watching Blues Clues.
He had realized that he would have to become all the more observant to see if there was a need in this household because he knew hell would have to freeze over for those two little kids to admit they could use help. Especially the young boy, Megumi.
It took three incidents before Satoru needed to have an intervention with the boy.
And oddly enough, they always occurred when it was just the two of them, alone.
Megumi always insisted on walking home from school. His sister was all too happy to take part in after-school activities, but the little introvert he was, he just wanted alone time.
This day had been no different from the others, he had been walking home, considering what he would have for dinner, when he saw it.
He would never admit, too ashamed of being called a liar, but the boy often saw things, strange, dark things, things nobody else saw out of the corner of his eye.
And there, right before him was something, watching him in the bushes, it was one of them, he knew it had to be.
Tsumiki always told him to be careful walking home. The woods of this area housed many of the homeless, and it tended to be no place for a child.
But here he was. Frozen still, the shadowy monster seemed to come his way, unspeaking, but threatening non the less.
Megumi threw his backpack to the front of his body, maintaining eye contact while frantically searching for something to defend himself.
There was nothing the boy hated more than being helpless.
His heart pounded in his ears, his fingertips burned with something he didn't recognize. But stronger than anything else, he was afraid. He wanted his dad. He wanted to hide.
He pulled out a pair of scissors, the same he used in art class, his arms trembled. He couldn't bring himself to make the first move so he was forced to wait until the curse came at him. He wanted to cry.
It did not take long.
He didn't even feel the ache in his bloody knees until the burning in his throat superseded all else.
He had rushed back to that apartment the white-haired man had arranged for them without a break in his step. And when the realization occurred to him of what had just happened, be felt the tearful nausea again.
There was no blood on his hands, but they shook with the fury it took to bring that monster to its knees. He had fallen to the ground with the beast, but the plunge of his scissors had gotten rid of it. Even if he was safe, however, he would never believe it.
It took a while to find the key he kept in his backpack. Fumbling fingers kept his keychain escaping his grasp. He was so encompassed by the afternoon's events that he did not even notice the tall man (boy) in the living area.
Satoru came by at least once a week, and recently even more than that. He tried to help the kids with their homework, stock their cabinets with snacks, and ensure their health. Megumi hadn't been expecting him that day.
"Oh! Megs! I've been waiting for you all day, you know, you're never home so late, don't tell me you've made a frien-" Satoru spun around so fast, the air around him seemed to make a noise with the motion. "What have you been doing?"
Put on the defense, Megumi shrunk back, "None of your business." Even after saying it, he worried he would get in trouble, worried he would be punished for talking back, despite Gojo's response to his snark always having been a chuckle, he knew adults hated disrespect.
The taller boy did not laugh now, "Oh, it's not? Megs you make me sad, what's going on? You seem tense."
The man was coming around through the common room and Megumi shuffled his bag to hide his bloodied knees. He didn't understand much of the man but he knew his eyes could also see things others could not.
"What's happened there?" Satoru pointed at the boys backpack.
"Nothing." Megumi murmured, trotting past Satoru and attempting to hide in his room. (His very own, though he often slept with his sister when he felt afraid)
"Ah, ah, ah, you shouldn't go fumbling around when you're hurt, Megumi. Come back here."
No, no, no, Megumi continued on, just about making it to his room when Satoru appeared before him. Megumi didn't know why he wanted to hide so badly, even so, he was frustrated to see the smile on the man's face. He was bent in a funny angle to look at the boy.
The boy would never understand how Gojo moved so quickly.
"Oh my, that looks bad." He made a bleh face, "How did you make it home on those knees, Megs? Hmm... I should give you a pager, shouldn't I, I don't want you running into trouble again without me. That must have been scary. Ugh, no fun at all.” All in one motion, Satoru grabbed Megumi and swung him around his hip.
"Stop! No!-" The boy flushed in embarrassment, but unbeknownst to him, Satoru could see the cursed energy encircling the boy.
And even if he didn’t say anything, he knew that something would have to change so this wouldn’t happen again.
After that day, Megumi did not walk home alone.
---
Satoru had been busy as of late, what felt like mission after mission, he was embarrassed to say, with how busy he was, he sometimes forgot he had two kids in his care.
He felt guilty, but the kids never asked for anything anyway. If they wanted something, he would get it for them. No questions asked.
It had been late one night, coming back after a mission that he saw his calendar and noticed with a grunt what week it was.
The middle schoolers were at camp according to his scribbles. Tsumiki was at camp and Megumi was all alone.
Why had he written this down? Could it be because he had insisted that Tsumiki go, promising to look after her little brother?
Satoru sighs. Did Megumi need anything? He was just a boy... but self-reliant as a man. He had been sure the little guy would be fine, even so, he couldn't deny the tug on his conscience.
Satoru almost went to bed that night before he decided he needed to check on the boy. God knows he wouldn't call - even if it was an emergency.
The sight he saw when he opened the door would stick with him for years. Mainly because he found it amusing.
Little Megumi, face flushed, wobbling on his feet, a blanket around his shoulders, and a kitchen knife in his hand.
"What are you doing!" Satoru yelled from the front door.
"Wha-" cough "-at are YOU doing!" cough "You're not here tonight!"
"Yes, I am! Put the knife down, it's just me, Megs." Satoru folded at his hips and leaned in close to the boy. It was strange, Megumi never let him get so close. "What's going on, were you scared because your sister wasn't here?"
Satoru reached out and pulled the knife out of the boys grasp. His little hands were hot, and when Megumi sniffled, he sounded congested.
"'M not scared..." It takes a staggering moment for the boys' hands to drop. Noticing he had nothing to hold.
"You sick?" And for the first time, the boy doesn't flinch when Satoru reaches a hand to his forehead.
He is, however, quickly swatted away. "No. Why are you-" cough "-here."
Satoru felt bad now, Tsumiki had probably left three days ago, how long had Megumi been sick? And why did the stubborn kid never just ask for help?
Prefacing his care he began, "I'm here because I want to be." Satoru finally lets out. Once again, he scoops the boy up, blanket and all, and is careful to set the knife back in the kitchen before using his now free hand to swaddle the boy. "Have you been sleeping on the couch?"
"Mhmm."
"Alright. No more of that. I'll be here so you just go to sleep."
Megumi didn't have anything to say. He missed his sister. He wanted to sleep in her bed. He wanted to feel safe. He wanted to feel better.
"I have a doctor friend, okay? You'll feel spick and span in no time." Satoru ruffled the boys hair.
"No, I don't wanna see them..."
Satoru furrowed his brows, "Ya know kid, you're not very convincing, I can tell you're definitely running a fever. All sweaty… like a big ball of sweat..."
"Jus' go away." Megumi said as he nuzzled his face deeper into Satorus's shirt, "I don't wanna see them."
"Sorry Megs, I'm perfect in may ways, but healing is not one of my many talents. She's really good, you'll feel better."
"I don't need help. I don't want you-"
"Alright, Megs. Go to bed." Satoru manhandles the boy like a doll, tucking him in so aggressively tight, he would have to put in real work to come free.
The next morning, Megumi had never felt so indebted to someone, and it made him sick, despite having just been healed
---
It was only a year later that Megumi called on his cursed technique.
Deep down, he had always known there was something different about him, something pulling at the surface of his being, but now, looking into the dog manifestation before him, he could finally feel purpose.
"Nice job Megs, that little dog is one of your Shikigami." Satoru grinned down at the boy sitting on the carpet of the family room.
The puppy rolled around on the floor before Megumi, and the boy's heart raced.
"She's mine?" He reached out and the puppy, sure it was a dream, she toppled over herself to nose at his hand.
"Sure is!" Satoru smiled. "And there's many more to come. Haven't you listened to me at all, Megumi? You're gonna be super strong."
But the boy wasn't listening. Blood was whooshing in his ears, saliva was pooling in his mouth, his heart was beginning to thump, but before him was a little friend. He couldn't let her go.
"Alright. You'll probably start to feel light-headed so let go of that energy. You'll be able to call her back again soon.”
Megumi was feeling woozy, that’s for sure, but there was no way he would leave her.
The puppy flickered like a mirage. Blinking slightly, she sat up, wobbling toward Megumi.
He wanted to hold her in his arms but a rush of bile was forming in his throat. His head pounded.
The puppy licked at his hand.
uh oh...
"Stop that Megumi." Satoru placed a hand on his shoulder. "Let go. She's taking too much."
Megumi's throat clenched and he swallowed thickly. Holding onto his new friend tightly.
"Stop, Megumi! Enough!" Satoru grabbed the boy by the shoulder.
The puppy faded from the boy's grasp. Megumi lurched forward, barely catching himself, and puked all over the carpet.
Satoru's hand faltered, but just a moment thereafter, he began to pat the boy comfortingly. "It's okay." He spoke gently, "That’s alright."
The boy's shoulders shook, not with tears, but with the adrenaline rush that comes with the throwing up/fight-or-flight response. He was mumbling, a hand covered his mouth.
"'m sorry. Sorry." He trembled.
Satoru sighed, unsure of how to console the boy. “Hey, 's alright. She was siphoning off your energy too quickly. You'll learn to manage it." Satoru patted the boys back but he was stumbling to his feet now.
"Carpet...sorry about the carpet." He was saying.
Satoru jumped to stand, "What? No, I don't care! It's okay Megumi. You go sit down, I can clean up."
The boy looked angry. "No. I'm fine."
He always seemed to say that.
"Seriously, I don't care about the carpet, just go take a second to calm down, that was probably a lot."
"I don't want a second!” Megumi spun, elbow covering his mouth, uncalled-for anger in his eye. "I don't need help. Just go! I can do it on my own."
There was a surge of annoyance in Satoru before he realized the boy was probably just embarrassed.
Shoko had long since told him about attachment issues and the lack of trust to expect from the boy. He just wished he could get Megumi to let his guard down.
"Megumi." He called firmly. "Stop that. I'm not upset with you, and I don't want anything in return. What I do want is for you to take some deep breaths and drink some water. You're over-exerting yourself."
"Ergh!" Megumi grunted angrily, tears in his eyes, and fled from the room.
When Satoru found the boy again. He was hiding in the coat closet. His face in his hands.
Satoru had to remind himself that the boy was hardly six, and clearly had trouble regulating his emotions. He wanted to have a real discussion with the boy, but he couldn’t do that if he wasn’t comfortable.
Gojo leaned down, slid between the coats in the closet and closed the door.
“W-what are you doing.” Megumi scooted back on the narrow floor.
Satoru sighed, “I want you to talk to me, Megs, can you do that?”
In the dark, it was hard for Megumi to see, but his benefactor could make the boy out perfectly. “What…”
Satoru sighed, considered how to say it, “I know there’s a lot of pressure on you, and I know that doesn’t feel good. But don’t go forcing yourself, okay? Take things with stride, accept help, I don’t want anything from you, Megs, and you don’t owe me anything either.”
Megumi rolled his feet around, tapping his shoes together, “I know you don’t believe me yet, but I’m not gonna leave. Your stuck with me for a while, so let’s try to get along, alright?”
The closet was silent. Satoru felt stupid, his words too plain, his mind scattered.
“Gojo…” the boy stretched his ankles out. “It gets cold at night... I wanna change the therma-thermostat.”
It took all but a second for Satoru to grab hold of the metaphorical raft Megumi was giving him. “What? All this time?!! That’s unacceptable! That’s why you should tell me these things, this is your home Megumi, touch the thermostat all you want!” Satoru pouted, stood, and stretched.
He bent down once more after cracking the door open, the bright light shining into the little boy's eyes.
“Okay, what else should I know?” Satoru reached out to pull the boy to his feet,
And for the first time, Megumi took it.

This is just a little drabble, I feel like this is some of my worst writing because sadly I have several more ideas about Satoru parenting Megumi

ཻུ۪۪ ༄࿐༉⁎ ⁺
jinx opened the door as soon as she heard your knocking. she welcomed you with messy hair and the smudged makeup she's been wearing all day.
"finally!" she pulled your hand, quickly guiding you to her room. "i was starting to think you were going to stand me up!" she dramatized, helping you strip off your backpack. it was late at night, almost 10pm, when you were supposed to arrive at about 8:30.
"sorry! i messaged you but i didn't have any service." you excused yourself as you made yourself comfortable in the familiar place. the dark gray walls filled with graffiti and metal bands posters gave you a sense of comfort, a sharp contrast to the intimidation from the first time you had come over. "i missed the bus and had to wait for the next one. but i brought the snacks!"
"excuses, excuses." she muttered playfully, throwing herself on her half-made bed, lots of pillows and blankets already occupying 70% of the space. "ok, i believe you. but you better have brought those gummy candies i asked for, though!"
you only hummed, barging in your backpack to find two small bags. you throw at her the gummies, followed by a couple of other snacks. jinx snickered, mouth soon full of sweets as you stripped off your street clothes. her eyes lingered on your form until you hid it with an oversized shirt you usually bring to sleep in. you didn't mind putting on shorts like her, being a hot summer night.
you sighed as you crawled into the bed, laying next to her. "i wanna watch a movie." jinx rolled her eyes, yawning while handing you the remote of the mid sized tv she luckily had in her bedroom. "stop yawning! don't you dare to fall asleep." you threatened with a frown.
"how could i? i'm way too excited to do anything with you." she intended to tease you, but it came out more suggestive than she anticipated. she mentally facepalmed herself, quickly speaking again. "but toots! your movies are boring."
"shut up, i have the perfect movie." you smirked, scrolling for a bit until you finally found what you were looking for.
"robots? seriously?"
"you'll like it! my baby brother made me watch it the other day, it's fun."
jinx groaned but quickly ended her small whim, focusing on the candy more than the movie. she honestly didn't really care, as long as she's with you.
both of you were around sixteen years old when you moved to her small town, accidentally stealing her private hang out spot under the old stairs at school. she quickly took a liking to you, interested in your sudden arrival and relaxed demeanor. besides your great sense of style and your pretty smile, or the softness of your hair, or the way you matched her physical love language and you silently reassured how much you like her presence with light touches. soft tugging at the edge of her shirt, tangling your arms while you walk side by side, resting your hands on her legs when she comfortably puts them across your lap, maybe even doing it yourself.
the movie barely started when you cuddled up next to her, opening your own snacks while you asked: “where’s your dad, by the way?”
“he’s out… he said he’ll be staying late at work tonight. dunno why, but at least we have the house for ourselves.” she said, looking at you for a moment before returning her gaze at the tv screen.
“yeah, this is better.” you contently rubbed your cheek on her shoulder.
“geez–” she huffed in feigned annoyance to hide the light blush, “you’re awfully touchy today…”
you react frowning, “i dunno what’re you talking about.” her call out doesn’t stop you, staying pressed by her side. “it’s just…” your voice wandering off caught her attention, tilting her head at you.
“what? what is it?”
you groaned quietly, reluctantly pulling away from her to grab your phone. now it was her face hovering over your shoulder, looking at your fingers opening instagram and your chat with ekko.
ugh, ekko.
jinx already had an idea of what got you in a bad mood, you two hated each other’s guts since the very first moment you befriended jinx. it wasn’t a mystery, jinx and ekko were former childhood friends. growing up, ekko developed a sweet crush on jinx.
too bad she didn’t reciprocate.
but even after rejecting him, he still thought he had a chance. his subtle insistence was the cause that made her blow him off completely. ekko simply couldn’t understand it, so he blamed you.
sadly you all shared the same group of friends, the hangouts filled with bickering and a slight tense air between the three of you. it was also common for ekko to reply to your instagram stories with unnecessary comments about you and your posts.
this time he replied to a picture of you and jinx earlier that day, when you spent your afternoon by the lake. it was a cute selfie, both of you with wet hair and pretty matching bikinis.
< you two look pretty close for only being best friends. > he said.
jinx stared at the chat with furrowed eyebrows, she was confused. is that it? that was enough to get on your nerves? of course you were close— what is wrong with that? aren’t best friends allowed to hang out all the time and post pictures together?
her mind wandered off briefly. she was conscious that maybe, just maybe, the line of your relationship was a bit blurred. she thought about her own comments under your pictures, a clear display of possession in every word, even only with emojis. she thought about the way you hug her from behind anytime you could.
she didn’t even have to go that far in her memory. that very same day, at the lake, what was supposed to be a friendly hangout seemed —and felt— more like a date.
she could still feel the warmth and weight of your body on her back when she playfully carried you around in the water. your hands untangling her long wet hair while she comfortably sat in between your legs. your quiet sighs of pleasure when she massaged your back as she applied sunscreen—
“jinx.” you snapped her out of her short trance. “did you hear me?”
“huh? sorry, what did you say?”
“i was complaining. like— what is his problem? i swear he will explode out of jealousy.” you grumpily muttered, laying your head back to rest on her shoulder. jinx buried her nose in the crook of your neck, it was only natural.
“i don’t know why you let him get under your skin, you don’t have to worry about him.” she tried to reassure you, punctuating her statement with a gentle kiss on your neck. “you’re the one in my arms, after all.”
you mindlessly hummed, relaxing on her arms. “i know, i know… he’s down bad for you. and not only him! my fingers aren’t enough to count all the people feening over you.” jinx snickered, listening to your jealous bragging as she placed butterfly kisses on the side of you neck. she felt you tilting your head to the other side, welcoming her affection. “every time we go out you have at least three boys asking for your number. your followers grow like two digits every day.”
“hm. i do have my user on a lot of walls, though.”
“not the point. i should just lock you up here by now.”
the feeling of your soft skin under her lips was making her dizzy. she didn’t understand how you could act so nonchalant when she was trying to mark you. maybe she was being too subtle.
“that’s so boring,” jinx groaned, sighing through her nose as she placed her chin on your shoulder to glance at you. oh— your cheeks were flushed. the slight tint of pink suddenly encouraged her. “how would you keep me entertained, hm?”
you took a long, deep breath. the possibilities were endless, hundreds of scenarios flowing through your mind in half a second. preparing your answer, you turned slightly to meet her eyes. is then when you noticed she stopped her ministrations.
an unamused small frown appears on your face, “i’ll bring you books.”
her face twisted into a pout as she pulled away from her neck. she raised an eyebrow at her response, “books? you’re gonna lock me up and expect me to stay occupied reading all day?"
“what else d’you want?” you raise an eyebrow, pressing into her chest as you laid back. now it was your turn to rub your cheek on her neck, easily reaching the soft edge of her jawline with your lips. ”your little trinkets and gadgets?”
jinx’s arms tightened their grip around your waist, pulling you closer against her. "i mean... those would be nice too..." she tried to maintain her casual tone, but the feeling of your lips against her skin was making it difficult to keep her composure. "but I'll need something else to entertain me..."
“so greedy…” you murmured, tapping the other side of her cheek to make her turn towards you.
her eyes meet yours for a brief moment before you mindlessly took her lips in a gentle, yet deep kiss.
a soft gasp escaped her lips when your mouth captured hers. for a few seconds, jinx was stunned by the sudden kiss, but she quickly gave in, melting against you. her arms enveloped your body completely, holding you close as she deepened the kiss.
she was greedy, alright. she wanted more and more, she couldn't get enough of your touch. the calm pace of the kiss warmed up her chest, you moved so naturally that it didn’t feel like your first kiss. yet the taste and feeling of your lips sent shivers down her spine, she could hear the imaginary fireworks and standing ovations.
when your fingers tangled in the hair on the back of her hair, a low satisfied hum escaped jinx’s lips.
the kiss was intoxicating, like a drug she couldn't get enough of. jinx's fingers traced the contour of your body, exploring every inch of your skin as she continued to kiss you with a growing intensity. it wasn’t long until things got messier, her tongue pushed past your lips as her hands started to confidently wander around, slipping under your shirt.
her cold hands on your stomach made you flinch, breaking the kiss with a quiet gasp followed by a giggle. “you’re freezing.”
“hm, you don’t like it?” she smirked, purposefully caressing up and down, almost reaching the underside of your naked breasts.
it should be strange, unnatural. but neither of you felt that way, it was more like… an improvement. the only proof of the fact that it was the first time you acted on your feelings was the raw hunger, the primal need to possess the other.
the steamy make out was only interrupted to change positions. now jinx straddles your lap with her milky thighs pressed tightly against either side of your hips. it was impossible to stop herself from grinding into you, and so was impossible to shut the small whimpers coming from her throat.
they grew louder and desperate when your lips attacked her neck, nibbling the skin. “feels good, jinx?” you whispered softly, combing the harsh graze of your teeth with open-mouthed kisses.
she continued to grind with increased fervor, clearly chasing the delicious friction of your bottom against her pussy. if she moved right, it was her clit receiving the pressure, making her squirm and moan messily.
“yeah— yes, feels s’good.”
your hand sneaked down into her loose shorts, a strained gasp escaped her mouth as her hips twitched against your touch. next thing she knows, her insides squeezed your fingers as she eagerly jumped on you. the heat that was building on her lower abdomen grew exponentially, jinx was sure that her release was close.
her body moved against your fingers more desperately, more frantically. she was on the edge, the need for a stronger connection was overwhelming her. "i-i’m so close," she managed to gasp out, her body tense, coiled like a spring ready to snap.
her body trembled, her muscles clenched, her breath catching in her throat as her release washed over her, a wave of pleasure and heat overwhelming her senses. she cried, her hips bucking against your hand involuntarily as she rode the wave of pleasure, your name a soft, shaky moan on her lips.
even after she relaxed her body, your fingers gathered up her cum and teasingly rubbed her clit with her wetness, enjoying the way her body shivered and squirmed to the overstimulation.
“ngh— too sensitive.” she protested in a soft whine. you chuckled quietly, deciding to be merciful.
“that was so hot…” you sighed dreamily, hugging her boneless body when her head fell to your neck. “this enough to keep you entertained?”
“fuck you,” she huffed, though you could feel the big smile that formed on her lips. “you could always just mark me up.”

"I GOT IT!" You call out while rushing downstairs to answer the door, grabbing your wallet from your purse by the door for the pizza delivery.
Opening the door while still fiddling with getting the money from your wallet, you look up and freeze.
"Fuuucking hell," you clutch your wallet at your chest.
"Heyyy, Aunt Y/n," Sam greets while leaning against the doorway holding a stack of pizzas.
"Cute outfit," Bucky smirks while looking you over. He has two pillows tucked under his arm and a backpack hanging from one shoulder.
It's movie night and you're currently wearing a fluffy hooded cookie monster robe (when you pull the hood up it has his goofy looking googly eyes on top), a blue ribbed tank top, black and blue plaid flannel pajama bottoms, fuzzy slipper socks, and your hair tossed up in two messy buns on top of your head.
"Did you guys decide to get a pizza delivery side hustle going?"
"Walked up at the same time as the delivery kid," Sam answers, nodding his head behind them.
"And what exactly are you doing here, besides stealing our pizzas?" You tilt your head to the side, a questioning glare looking over the both of them.
Bucky holds up a greeting card in his right hand. More specifically Benji's Christmas card. He flips the card open and holds it up to you. You reach out and take the card from him looking it over.
The front of the card says "MERRY CHRISTMAS YA FILTHY ANIMALS" with an edited Home Alone poster showing Benji in the middle with Bucky and Sam in the background. This you already knew, but what you didn't realize was the little shit apparently customized the inside of their cards without you knowing.
The inside of the card reads:
AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
You've been cordially invited to:
New Year's Eve Movie Marathon Night
📍 Location: Attic movie space
⏱️ Time: 3pm set up, 4pm movie selection process
Comfy Attire / Pajamas
Bring your own: overnight essentials - pillows and blankets encouraged but probably not necessary
Snacks and Pizza will be provided
[*Mom knows of this, Aunt Y/n does not...please direct any further inquiries to Mom 718-555-0110*]
"I saw you yesterday, you didn't want to bring this up to me??" You glare over at Bucky, holding the card up.
"Oh you did, did you?" Sam looks back and forth between the two of you.
"Must have slipped my mind," Bucky shrugs.
"I'm sure you were both very busy at this mystery meetup," Sam smirks.
"Yes, it was very eventful," you keep a straight face, "My legs are still sore."
"Oh??" His eyebrow raises as his head whips over to you.
"Mmhm, and there was also a lot more oils involved than I expected."
"Go on..."
"Lots of flowers. Candles. Honey. Fruits... Anything I'm missing?" You look over at Bucky.
"The leather. Can't forget that."
"Of course, how could I forget that. Very sturdy leather, indeed."
"Wow, I just knew you two were a couple of freaks." You can see the wheels turning in Sam's head as he processes this information and tries to decide which question to go with next.
"And then there was that sweet old lady that joined us," you're starting to struggle to keep a straight face, but manage to keep it together.
"Mildred was very energetic for 86 years old," Bucky nods. You finally break and start laughing.
"She probably could have gone another 3 or 4 rounds."
"Whoa whoa whoa whoa," Sam interrupts, holding his hands up in an X motion. "You lost me. Explain yourselves," he looks back and forth between you, an eyebrow raised.
"We went to the farmer's and craft market, obviously. What were you thinking we were talking about?" You sass.
"Yeah, Samuel. What were you thinking of?" Bucky asks, a smirk appearing on his face now.
Sam scoffs. Nora makes her way downstairs and spots their new guests still standing in the doorway.
"Hey, guys! Welcome! Why are you still in the doorway? Come on in," Nora waves them inside. She greets Sam with a squeeze on his arm as she walks by, "Thanks for grabbing the pizzas! Bring 'em on up with you. Everyone's in the attic - you're just in time. Hey, Bucky!" She grins while greeting him with a quick wave.
Nora quickly disappears into the kitchen. Sam sets the pizza boxes down on the entry table temporarily and wraps you in a bear hug, giving you a lift before he sets you back down to snag the pizzas again while making his way upstairs.
Bucky steps inside and hesitates as he closes the door behind him, "Is this ok with you that we're here? I would have told you but I wasn't sure what repercussions would happen if I was the one to spill the beans. Plus seeing the look on your face when you opened the door..."
You grab one of the pillows from him and playfully whack him with it.
"How dare you," you laugh, "And of course it's ok. You're welcome here any time. The fact you keep willingly coming back to this circus amazes me every time."
Bucky just shakes his head and holds his pinky up to you. Those piercing blue eyes staring right at you with his stupidly handsome face.
You smile as you hook your own pinky around his, reminding you of his promise back in the attic during your last movie night together. "Promise you'll tell us if the crazy gets to be too much?"
Somehow we still haven't scared him away. He's gorgeous but you're worried he might be a beautiful idiot.
"Happy almost New Year," you smile as you place your hand on the side of his face, the stubble tickling your palm. He smiles down at you in return, "Happy New Year's Eve." He starts to lean in but you're lost in thought for a moment.
"Wait," You blink and Bucky halts his movement, "Did you guys tip the pizza delivery?"
"It was a young kid, he got a picture with Sam and ran off in his excitement after."
"Damn, that's genius." Note to self, remember that for the next time we order delivery.
You kiss his cheek and hand him the pillow back. "Well, I'm pleasantly surprised and glad you're here. Your continued movie education awaits. You first," you gesture up the stairs, "I'm just gonna go help Nora real quick." Bucky stares at you for a moment, an eyebrow raised as he tilts his head.
He goes to question you but you interrupt as you start to back away, "I'll be right up!"
He gives you a face that looks like you just kicked his dog and you suddenly realize in your frazzled state you gave him the brush off. You step closer again and place your hands back on his face.
"Hi, sorry. Starting over," you crank up the excitement, "I'm so happy you're here. Happy almost New Year!" You move his face between your hands back and forth for emphasis.
"Happy New Year's Eve," he repeats his part in amusement.
You wrap your arms around his neck and pull him closer into a sweet kiss. Bucky slowly rests his forehead against yours after, his piercing gaze searching yours with a light smile.
"Sorry for the awkward scatter brain. Was just caught off guard."
"S'fine. Don't do it again though," he jokes with you.
"An eight year old wasn't trying to set me up with a stranger for no reason. He's aware I'm a basket case."
"If you think you're a basket case, I don't know what that could possibly mean for me then."
"Well, the remaining roles available are brain, athlete, criminal, and princess. If you don't understand that reference we'll add it to the growing movie list. But I'm voting princess," you quip and kiss his nose quickly before you step away, "See you upstairs, your majesty."
He glares down at you sceptically, but decides not to bother questioning you. He's sure he'll find out at some point. He shakes his head while adjusting his backpack strap on his shoulder and making his way over to the stairs.
You escape into the kitchen in a flash but wait a moment, listening to Bucky's footsteps make it up the stairs before you say anything.
"Nora, how could you?" You try to keep your voice low while you whisper yell at her.
She clearly knew about this and said nothing this whole time.
"I made sure you looked cute today! Come on!"
"Traitor."
"Why are you even in here? I don't need your help. Go make out with your handsome future husband."
"I'm moving somewhere tropical and far away from all of you," you mutter as you grab a tote bag off the counter.
"Send postcards! Save a guest suite for us," she blows a kiss at you. "Oh, that also sounds sunny! Make sure Bucky gets your back for you when you need to reapply sunscreen."
You send a middle finger (with love of course) her way as you exit the kitchen.
Bucky lets out a low whistle when he reaches the attic space, "Wow."
"How does it get cooler every time we come up here? What is this?" Sam waves his arms towards the fully decorated ceiling.
Benji's previous surprise movie set up had been recreated but on a much larger scale.
The couch was set up much the same with it's pillows lined up, sheet canopies hanging over it, and string lights surrounding the area. However Prudence had helped Benji cover the rest of the space to look like the room was basically a giant blanket fort, with sheets draped and hanging from the ceiling from various strings and pins.
The king size and queen size foam mattress toppers that belong both on your bed and Nora's now took up residence on the floor for some padding along with every cushion that could be found and removed in the house, making one large cozy area. Sam tosses his backpack down, flopping onto his stomach on the padded floor next to it, "I'm moving in."
Benji jumps on top of him, "Heck yeah!"
"Hi fellas!" Prudence greets from her spot on an oversized beanbag chair, her boyfriend Monty next to her.
You make your way up the attic stairs with Nora, the large tote full of snacks and candies in your hands.
You hold the tote open to Bucky with a grin when you reach the top of the stairs.
"Are you sharing?" He asks while peering into the bag.
"I suppose," you tease, "Go ahead and pick your poison."
The lights dim as Bucky goes to reach into the bag and "Get Ready For This" by 2 Unlimited starts playing. The recognizable beat pumping through the Bluetooth speakers.
"Ohh, here we go," you sigh but laugh.
The starting line "Y'all ready for this?" announces Theo's presence as he starts pumping his phone in the air while the lights in the room start flashing with the help from Nora flicking the switch off and on rapidly to the music.
Benji groans. "Every time," he grumbles while crawling off of Sam and standing back up.
"Party peopleeeee!" Theo shouts as he reaches the top of the stairs.
Nora turns the lights back on, "Everyone go ahead and pick out your movie choice for tonight. Try not to share your choice yet."
Sam and Benji move to huddle by a large shelf of DVDs.
Sam silently holds up a copy of Sleepless in Seattle to Benji with an eyebrow raised.
Benji's eyes widen as he continues their silent exchange with a violent head shake side to side.
Sam slowly puts the DVD back on the shelf and gestures to locking a key over his mouth and throwing it over his shoulder.
"I knew that line about soulmates, puzzle pieces and cosmic forces sounded familiar," he points an accusing finger at the small agent of mischief.
Benji smirks and flashes his choice so only Sam can see. They both break into a giggle fit and high five.
Meanwhile across the room, you stand next to Bucky, "Do you have any favorites you'd like to pick out? If we don't have the physical copy we can try finding it online and just hold up a photo on my phone."
"Haven't been big on movies these days. I caught part of a movie recently playing on one of the TV's at the bar? Never saw the end, definitely didn't start watching at the beginning either. Just glimpses here and there."
"Do you know what it was? We could find that one if you are interested."
"Never saw the title," he shrugs.
"Oooh, a challenge," you rub your hands together and turn to face him better, "Let's see... Was it real life or animated?" You lean in, face turning serious in concentration.
He laughs lightly under his breath at your switch in demeanor, "Not animated. It was in space? It had people and robots in it."
"Oh hell yeah, okay. Let's see... Was it like a moon landing situation? Or maybe trapped on a planet?"
"Uh.. buncha people with terrible aim. Like, astonishingly bad aim. They were in a garbage compactor that was closing in..?"
"BUCKY, please shut your beautiful mouth right now. Star Wars????"
"That's the movie people always bring up?"
You grab his arm and yank him over to the many movie collections. You pull 'A New Hope' out and hand it to him.
"Yeah, that's the one. The girl with the hair," he holds the cover up to your face to compare side by side. "Yours are cuter," a sweet but devilish smile appears on his face as he references your hair that's up in two buns.
You swat the case away from your face, "Is this what you'd like to pick? You might get some heat for choosing this... Just a fair warning."
He shrugs while tucking the case under his arm.
"Beautiful mouth, huh?" He smiles slyly over at you.
You fix a playful glare at him, "Now is not the time, Barnes. This is serious business."
"Okay!" Nora announces, "For our esteemed guests, welcome. We're glad to have you join us. Everyone please put your choices behind your backs and line up when you're ready."
You all finish grabbing your choices and gather in a line, standing side by side. You pull on Bucky's arm and direct him to stand next to you. Benji grins up at him and tosses his arms around Bucky's waist, giving him an excited hug. Bucky freezes at first and then relaxes, ruffling Benji's hair. Benji lets go and gives his attention back to what's going on in the room.
"Here's the deal," Theo begins, "We each get a turn. When it's your turn you step to the front and present your choice. When you hold the movie up, we like to say a line from the movie for an added razzle dazzle, you don't have to though. The next person goes up and does the same with their movie. We then vote on which one stays and which one goes. The winner stays and the next entry goes up against them. We repeat until the last movie is standing. Got it?"
You all nod and confirm your understanding of the rules.
"Since we're watching more than one movie tonight, how are we deciding follow up winners?" Prudence asks.
"Well I mean, if you insist, I will choo-"
"Don't you dare finish that sentence," Nora cuts Theo off.
"Guests could choose," Prudence suggests.
"What about the youngest? Hellooo?" Benji cuts in, waving his hand.
"We could go by highest rating on IMDb?" Monty adds.
Arguments break out. You roll your eyes and go back to picking out chocolate from your tote. You grab a snickers and inspect the wrapping and then silently offer a piece to Bucky, tapping his arm with the wrapper to grab his attention. He smiles and accepts your offering while you rip into a KitKat and take a bite. "This could be a minute."
Sam nods over to you and holds his hands up in a stance ready to catch. You reach into the tote again and toss over a random candy for him. He catches the orange Reese's and gives you a thumbs up.
"Alright!" Nora interrupts the bickering, "Raffle style? We pull from a hat."
A chorus of fiiiiine's agree and you're all finally ready to continue.
Theo steps up to present his choice first. "Pockets ain't empty, cuz." He proudly slides a copy of 2 Fast 2 Furious out from behind his back.
Nora rolls her eyes. "Another one?! Again? Why the second one?"
Theo puts his hand over his heart, "How could you? You're my wife, my FAMILY."
"Don't you dare say it-"
"You're gonna turn your back on family?"
Nora's palm covers her face.
"This is the fourth time in a row he's chosen a fast and furious movie," you whisper to Sam and Bucky, taking another bite of your candy.
"I heard that," Theo points at you, "and that is a lie. This is my seco-... No wait, it's the third time."
"And you don't choose them in any order. You just pick random ones! Last time we watched one of the more recent ones, now you wanna go back to not the first but the second movie? Make it make sense," Nora argues. They both stick their tongues out at each other.
Prudence skips up next to Theo, "Well this should be an easy choice then." She holds up her choice over her head: Hot Rod. "You look pretty. What did you say? Uh, I said you look shitty. Goodnight, Denise!" She quotes while mimicking the two different voices.
You laugh while pointing towards Prudence, "Cool beans!" You quote back.
The majority votes for Prudence and Theo dejectedly goes to stand to the side, Monty stepping up in his place.
"You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting," he kneels while holding up A Knight's Tale over his head, "Come back when you're worthy."
"Dang. Sorry Prue," you join the votes and point over to Monty.
"It's a worthy choice, I understand." She moves to the side and Nora steps in her place.
"D-i-g, what's that spell?" She swings the DVD case for Holes like a shovel, "DIG!"
Theo groans, "I'm tired of this, Grandpa!"
"Well that's too damn bad!" Nora shouts back.
Bucky looks over at you with visible confusion written on his face.
"They're still quoting the movie," you answer for him.
He nods but still seems baffled by this movie selection process. You link your arm around his and pat it in a gesture to show your silent support among the chaos.
Votes stick with A Knight's Tale. It was close though.
"If you forget to come back for Madame Zeroni, you and your family will be cursed for always and eternity," Nora does her best Eartha Kitt impression as she moves aside.
Finally it's your turn. You let go of Bucky's arm and make your way over next to Monty.
"I do a great impression of a hot dog!" You scrunch your shoulders up and neck down, holding up Mrs. Doubtfire.
"HelloooOOooo!" Prudence cheers while voting for you.
"My first day as a woman and I'm already getting hot flashes!" Nora points to you as well.
"It was a run-by fruiting," Benji giggles.
"I'm melting like a snow cone in Phoenix," Sam joins in, Benji giving him a high five.
Bucky's eyebrows scrunch together. Benji tugs on his hand and pulls him down to whisper in his ear.
Standing back up, Bucky clears his throat and answers, "Help is on the way, dear?"
"Yeah!" You all cheer.
Bucky blushes a bit at the attention. Benji grabs his arm, giving it an excited shake.
"Alright, alright." Monty surrenders and steps aside.
Sam starts singing in a deep voice as he walks up next to you, "Bow bow, Oooh yeahhhhh," he raises his movie up, "Chick, chicka-chickaaaa!"
His voice goes monotone as he continues, "Bueller..... Bueller......"
It's a strong choice but votes stick with Mrs. Doubtfire instead of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Bucky shyly makes his way up next to you. You give him an encouraging nod and smile. His face is scrunched up and unsure, "I'm not really prepared with a quote or anything..."
"Wait! Hang on," you pull out your phone, quickly typing away. "One second... Almost got it... Fucking ads - five more seconds please..." You watch the countdown waiting for 'Skip Ads' to finally appear. "Ok! On the count of 3," you nod over at Bucky. You hold up three fingers, two, one, and then point over at him as you press play.
The intro to Star Wars dramatically blares as Bucky presents his choice.
"Boooo, hiss!" Prudence yells out towards you.
"You coached him!" Theo argues.
"Party foul, bending the rules to your advantage!" Monty joins in.
"I didn't coach shit! This was his choice! So be nice!"
"Then you two really are perfect together," Nora rolls her eyes.
"The rule was I can't choose this movie ever again. Our GUEST chose it!"
Bucky's eyes are wide as he stands frozen, trying to figure out what is happening.
"Uh, we can skip my choice?"
"Of course not, Bucky. So sorry for freaking you out. Y/n has made us watch this a million times. Open the case, we started a tally mark system for them," Nora motions towards the case.
He opens the case and sees the cluster of line tallies filling the inside cover.
"I tried to warn you," you shrug at him.
"At least it's not Lord of the Rings again," Theo sighs.
"You leave my precious out of this," you point at Theo accusingly, "I would cut off your head, Dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground."
Theo rolls his eyes at you.
"I'm just gonna.. step aside... No votes necessary, really," Bucky assures.
"You're all a bunch of jerks. Bucky, I will gladly watch the entire series with you. You're not getting out of it that easy."
"Wait, have you not seen them before?" Nora asks.
"I've only seen parts of that one," Bucky shrugs and moves back to his original spot.
"Well, that's a different story I guess," Monty shrugs, "but still not enough to sit through it again. Sorry."
"Nerf herders," you mutter under your breath.
Benji dances up to the empty spot. "With it being New Years, I have decided to go with a more New Year resolvation related choice."
"Resolution," Theo corrects.
"Yeah, that." Benji reveals his DVD, holding it up with a wide grin. Uncle Buck.
Prudence lets out a snort that instantly makes her start giggling even harder. "Remember when you showed me his first ultrasound and I told you ' this baby is destined for greatness'?" She asks Nora next to her, "Absolutely knocked it out of the park."
"Well, that was fun. I'm so honored to have the winning choice," you interrupt while shoving Benji's face as you push by him.
"Hey! We didn't vote yet!" Benji protests.
"Are you really sure you want us all to watch this? Mr. 'Where do you live, own or rent?' Hm?" You whisper the last part to him, hinting at you knowing all about his previous kitchen interrogation after prying the info out from Bucky yourself during your first date.
Benji's eyes widen as he gasps. "I, uh, I... Y'know what... I was just being silly. You know meee, just gotta get that title joke in there. I.. take back my choice and pass," he plasters on a nervous grin as he hides the movie behind his back, "Maybe next time!"
Bucky raises an eyebrow but you refuse to look over at him.
"Can I see that?" He asks Benji with a smirk.
Theo and Nora claimed the couch.
On the floor area in front of it Monty and Prudence assembled their own little nest where they gathered some of the extra cushions and blankets around them.
You were next to Prudence, a wall of cushions between the two of you and a stack of pillows from your bed behind you. Bucky is next to you with his pillow he brought with him, the other pillow he carried in earlier was Sam's. Sam is on the other side of Bucky, an empty space left between them for Benji who called 'dibs' on the spot before disappearing downstairs.
While Theo sets up your winning movie for Mrs. Doubtfire, you get up to grab some plates and pass out pizza slices with Prudence who passes out the drinks.
You place one more plate of pizza in Benji's open space and sit back down in your spot with your own.
As you're pulling your blanket over your lap, loud thumps and clatters from Benji running back upstairs start to echo and he emerges carrying a bag full of items over his shoulder like a small Santa Claus. He plops everything down immediately.
"Here you go, Sam." Benji grins while tossing a thick rolled up fleece blanket over to him.
"Ayyy! Thanks so much, big guy." Sam unrolls the blanket and tosses it up slightly to spread it over his legs, revealing a large captain america shield on it. "It's perfect," he laughs.
"Do I get a blanket?" Bucky asks, looking over at the blanket and back over to Benji in betrayal.
"I'm all out. Sorry. You'll have to share one," Benji smirks and scurries away.
"I wonder who he thinks you'll share with," you ask in an airy tone while pretending to brush dirt off and pick lint from the comforter over your lap, tucking it closer under your legs with one hand while taking a bite of your pizza with the other.
Bucky gives you a side eye, but you keep a straight face while focusing on your pizza. A piece of mozzarella stretches as you pull it away and place it back on your plate.
Sam makes a show out of smoothing his blanket out as well, pulling it up over his shoulders and giving them a shimmy. "So cozy. Wow. It's like I'm being hugged by a fluffy cloud."
Bucky shakes his head at both your antics.
"You can share with us, BB." Monty lifts a corner of their blanket up with a wink.
Suddenly the large blanket over Prudence and Monty disappears towards their feet. Benji has their blanket tangled at his feet as he walks away. "Whoops," he shrugs while shuffling his feet and the blanket around some more like a plate of spaghetti. You almost break, but manage to keep a straight face still. Benji then grabs two chunky black plastic objects from his earlier pile and you know exactly what they are. One definitely came from your room, the other from his own. He rushes over to the corner of the room and plugs one in, setting the object down on the floor at a slight angle. He then rushes to the other corner of the room and does the same with the second one. He excitedly runs over to the light switch, shutting off the overhead lights, leaving only the movie projector and the string lights lighting the room.
"Sure, I didn't need to see anything," Theo grumps, remote in hand still clicking around on the screen.
"It's a projector, you can see better in the dark," Nora shakes her head at him.
Benji excitedly plops down in his spot and leans over to Bucky. "Are you ready for this??"
"Da na na, da d-da da, na na-" Theo starts singing the same 2 Unlimited song from earlier.
"Dad, stoppppp!" Benji swats behind him at Theo. "Anyways! Watch this!" He holds up two small remotes and presses the power buttons on them.
Two more projectors come to life, but these cast laser dots to look like stars with multi-color aurora light effects dancing around the room.
"Are you kidding me?? I'm forwarding my mail. How much for my share of rent?" Sam asks Theo behind him.
"We'll crunch some numbers and get back to you," Theo answers.
"I could stare at this for hours," Bucky watches in awe as the colors slowly shift and dance around.
"I bought Benji one for his birthday and then immediately bought one for myself. Ceilings are so boring and depressing without them now."
"Can we turn the spinning off? It makes me slightly nauseous," Prudence requests.
"On it," Benji presses a button and the laser stars stay stationary in their positions, they continue to blink in and out softly and the Aurora effect is still shimmering and shifting colors.
"Perfect, thank you!"
Benji starts making himself comfortable in his spot between Bucky and Sam. He has wrapped himself in his favorite fleece blanket that looks like a giant tortilla and has managed to lounge his way across both Sam and Bucky, shoving a large slice of pizza in his mouth.
The 20th Century Fox logo pops up on the screen as the opening music for Mrs. Doubtfire starts playing.
A sense of calm washes over Bucky as he relaxes. Next to Wakanda he thinks he has found a new favorite spot. A feeling catches him off guard. A feeling he hasn't had a lot of experience with in a long time... Home. He has had a similar taste of it when he visits the Wilson's, but he still felt more like an outsider looking in. This though. This felt different. He looks over at you.
You were still sitting up, a bag of chips now resting in your lap while you toss candies back and forth with Prudence. A smile is stretched across your face as the two best friends giggle at each other. Monty retrieved their blanket.
Benji has his head resting back against Bucky's chest and left shoulder, while one leg stretches across Sam's shins. Bucky's vibranium arm rests across Benji's small shoulders, his forearm bent up allowing his hand to rest on top of Benji's head.
You smile and shake your head when you look over and see Benji has made himself comfortable. In his own little chosen people bubble. Wrapped as a cozy pizza-eating burrito.
You give in and lift the edge of your blanket and comforter, tossing it over what you can reach of Bucky.
He looks down in surprise for a moment and then smiles over at you. With his Benji-free right arm, he adjusts the blanket over his legs. You scooch over closer, purely to make it easier to share of course. He nudges you with his shoulder in thanks. You tap him with your knee as your silent reply.
During the movie Benji grabs a bag of peelable red licorice strips that he starts chowing down on. Every few peels he'll hold a couple strings up and offer them to Bucky or Sam.
-
Mrs. Doubtfire wraps up and you all get up to stretch and take bathroom breaks while setting up for the next movie.
You start clearing up some discarded pizza plates.
"Anybody want some cake?" Nora asks.
"Yes!" Benji cheers.
Nora goes to open a cake box, revealing a decorated vanilla & chocolate marble cake made to resemble a clock.
"Theodore, why is the 5 o'clock slice missing?" She points the serving knife over at her husband.
"Uh.. because seven ate five?"
Prudence lets out a snort of laughter. Nora just sighs while shaking her head, slicing into the cake to serve the rest.
"Alright, Benji," you hand him a plastic cup, "I scribbled down the movies on paper scraps and put them in the cup. Go ahead and pick out the next movie."
"How do we know you didn't put Star Wars in there for every entry?" Monty points an accusing finger at you.
Benji reaches in and pulls out A Knight's Tale. You hold a middle finger up while Monty cheers, "Only joking, sweet Y/n. I knew you'd never do that." He cuts his eyes over to Prudence quickly, mouthing "What are the odds?"
"You owe me five," she mouths back while holding up her hand.
Monty gives her a quick high-five, earning an eye roll from Prudence. "That was my fault for not being more specific that I meant dollars, you cheeky bastard."
Monty grins and leans over, stealing a kiss from her.
-
Mid-movie Benji let's out a slight snore-snort as he startles himself awake, sitting up straight. "Wha- is it midnight yet?" He rubs at his eyes.
"It's not even 8pm yet, you lightweight," you toss a smaller pillow at him and it bounces off his head.
"Heyyy. So rude." He yawns while laying back down but instead of leaning back on Bucky again, he burrows into his own stack of pillows.
Bucky takes advantage of his newly freed arm and range of motion, reaching over to steal some of your snacks. You playfully glare over at him in mock offense as he gives you a smirk in return.
Benji pops his head back up suddenly, a new wave of energy hitting him at his sudden thought. His head whips around to look over at his parents on the couch behind him, his eyes staring owlishly wide at them.
Theo whispers over to Nora, "We made that terrifying little being."
"Straight up brought that chaos into this world," she whispers back. "How can we help you, sweet definitely-not-possessed baby boy of ours?"
"Can we play my new board game?"
"That sounds more like a group vote decision, my love."
Benji sits up on his knees sitting back enough to have all eyes on him. The overkill gut-punch pout and large puss in boots eyes appear, "Can we all play my new board game, pleeeease?" He clasps his hands together under his chin making sure to tilt his head and pitifully look at each adult while he begs.
"Man, that is stone cold. How do you say no to that?" Sam asks.
You and Nora sigh at the same time, "You don't."
"Which board game is it, Ben Ben?" Prudence asks.
"I'll go get it!" He leaps up and runs to a closet in the corner
"Are you sure you can stay awake long enough to play a game?" You tease.
"I was not sleeping! I was resting my eyes like Pop-pop! It wasn't my fault, Bucky's arm must have some sort of sleeping magic."
"Sleeping magic?" Bucky and Nora ask at the same time.
"Can't say I've unlocked that feature before," Bucky answers while flexing and twisting his arm back and forth as the plates shift with the motion.
"Please tell whoever made it I will donate my entire body to get some of this sleeping magic. Even if it's just a pinky," Nora pleads back.
"I'll pass that along," Bucky laughs.
Benji runs back in with his new board game proudly held over his head. A box that says... Benjopoly?
"Benji, what is this?" You ask taking the box from his hands to get a closer look.
"It's a custom monopoly board!" He jumps up and down in excitement.
"Hey, our house is on a spot!" You point at a spot on the box, "How cool! Why is this the first time I'm seeing this?"
"He wanted to surprise everyone with it today," Nora shrugged, "I haven't even seen some of the choices he went with yet."
"So can we play, pleeeease??" He begs.
You open the lid and hold the box back out to Benji. He's practically vibrating with excitement as he pulls the board out.
As Benji lays the board out you get a closer look at the property choices around the board. You also catch a glimpse at the little trinkets for player pieces.
"Sweet Jesus...." You sigh and shut your eyes while you press your fingers against them.
"What?" Bucky questions, "You okay?"
You clear your throat, "Fine, I'm fine..." You grab Benji by the back of his shirt and tug him over into your lap. He lands with a thump and gazes up at you with a look of complete innocence, but you know it is anything but. Placing your forehead against his, you playfully glare into his tiny mischievous eyes, "Wanna delight me with an answer on why you chose these places?"
Your house, the library, museum of natural history, a few fancy hotels, the gazebo at a local park, Brooklyn botanic garden, the aquarium, even Disneyland and the Smithsonian were on here. These were all innocent enough until you started noticing things like your childhood family church, city hall, the large barn on your uncle's property where Nora and Theo were married and you finally start to piece together... These were all a variety of wedding venue options. The player pieces? You noticed a diamond ring, top hat, flower bouquet, and a limo amongst them.
He beams up at you in return and rubs his nose against yours. He then pulls you into a tight hug, squeezing the life out of you. "Just some favorite places!"
"Oh hey, it's Uncle Dave's barrnnnn-ooooh..." Nora's sudden epiphany hits next. She looks over at you, her eyes wide but trying to keep a neutral face. She mouths, "I didn't know," over to you and winces.
"Oooh? Oooooh what?" Theo asks her.
"Uh..I was just thinking how long this is gonna take to play... Bubs, I know you're excited about this, but what do you think about something less time consuming? Like maybe Uno?"
Benji pouts and huffs while getting up and going to grab the deck of cards instead.
Nora makes quick work of packing up the board game and discarding the box discreetly under the couch.
At 10:45pm Prudence jumps up and starts lining up plastic champagne flutes, filling them with a sparkling cider. Benji also gets up and grabs a shopping bag from the corner of the room, pulling out a stack of cone shaped party hats, glittery gold paper crowns, and some foil horns to blow into. He passes out one of each to everyone, asking each person, "hat or crown?" while holding each option up.
You try to figure out the best way to make this work with your hair up. You grab two crowns. Bucky takes one from you and helps you adjust the sizes to put a crown around each bun on top of your head. He shakes his head once they're on and pulls his phone out, snapping a photo of you posing with your hands under your chin. Benji and Theo can be spotted in the background giggling as they were also trying to figure out how to give Theo a mohawk look with the party hats, elastic strings meant to go under your chin covering his face at weird angles to accommodate multiple hats going along the back of his head, which only makes them giggle harder. Nora shakes her head at their antics but has a smile on her face as she watches the two in amusement, a crown already on her head as well.
You grab Bucky's phone and go to take a picture of the both of you. He places his arm over your shoulder and smiles for the photo. After you take a couple to make sure you get a cute one you tell Sam to move closer and join in for a photo.
"I don't want a photo of Sam," Bucky argues with a huff. You lightly elbow him and Sam ignores Bucky, plastering a goofy grin on his face for a photo with both of you, while yelling "Misterwives!" as his way of saying 'cheese!'
Prudence checks her phone, "My co-worker lives up the street. She said they're all at the park having a new years party. Looks like there's a projector show of their own set up against the nearby buildings to watch the ball drop with music. Anybody interested in checking it out? We have enough time to get over there."
You trade your cookie monster bathrobe for a long wool coat and slip on your boots on the way out.
Bucky is giving an overtired, sugar-buzzed Benji a piggyback ride. Benj yaps away in his ear as you all walk along the sidewalk
"We have a 'bring your favorite person to school' day coming up soon. Can you come?" He asks Bucky while playing with the cone party hat on Bucky's head.
"EXCUSE me?!" Theo, Nora, and you stop short and yell at the same time.
"I can't pick just one of you. Two of you will get all butthurt. So I'm choosing outside the box.. or roof..? And then you all can be equally butthurt together."
"Unbelievable. The audacity," Nora scoffs and keeps walking while holding Theo's hand.
"Judas," Theo grumbles.
"Good thing we kept the receipts on those Christmas presents."
Benji ignores them and continues, "We eat lunch and they have some games set up around. We would totally crush it." He holds his fist up.
"Am I expected to make some sort of presentation?"
"Nope!"
"I'll think about it, but I think you have better options, pal."
"Nope!" He repeats and squeezes his grip around him.
"I thought I was offended before, now I'm extra offended. The absolute nerve," Theo scoffs.
"I'll text you the info," Benji fake whispers.
You get separated from Bucky at the park. He went to get you a water but he hasn't returned yet. You make a quick sweep through and finally find him, his body language clearly showing discomfort as he looks around. A woman is standing in front of him trying to pull him into conversation. You walk over and see his shoulders sag slightly with relief.
"There you are, we were about to start a search party!" You joke as you walk up to him and link your arm around his. "Hello," you greet the woman standing in front of him.
"Oh, hi!"
"This is the future Mrs," Bucky tilts his head towards you.
Her eyes dart down to your gloved hands.
"Yup, that's me," you play along, "Nice to meet you. Are you the owner of the salon on 8th? I think I've seen you there before? I've had an appointment with Mac before."
"Oh yes! We miss her. She moved back west after the baby was born."
"I heard. I'm happy for her, but she will definitely be missed."
"You'll like Alex, he has the same aura. Very welcoming and highly recommended by clients. His bridal updos are to die for."
"I'll keep that in mind. Happy New Year," you wave to her as you steer both you and Bucky away.
"We lose you for a few minutes and you're nearly on your way to another future wife, you stud."
"Haa-haa," he gives a flat response back, pulling you closer to him. "Can we go find the others before she decides to appear again?"
"What, you weren't enjoying your conversation with crazy eyes? She's loaded, you could have been her sugar baby."
-
The midnight countdown echoes as everyone chants down from ten.
At 'three', Bucky gently tugs you closer while his hand cups your jaw. His vibranium fingers brush gently against your chin, tilting your head towards him. You can feel your heart pounding faster in anticipation. The growing noise of the excited crowd starts to fade as he pulls you into a soft, tender kiss. Your lips fitting perfectly together.
The midnight cheers erupt and echo around you as you fight your own internal fireworks erupting for your new year's kiss. Time feels like it slows to a crawl.
"Happy New Year," you whisper with a grin when you finally pull away. You can't help but let out a laugh.
"Why are you laughing? What's so funny?" He squints down at you.
"Sorry, I don't wanna ruin the moment... This is just so cheesy," you bite your lip while holding back another laugh at the stunned look on his face.
"Cheesy? Cheesy?? You think this is cheesy, huh??" He squeezes your waist, while he playfully taunts you. With each question his face inches closer to you.
You break into laughter as his fingers tickle into your sides.
"I'll show you cheesy," his grip tightens as he dips you backwards, pulling you in for a breathtaking kiss.
Bucky lifts you back up and you both take a moment to breathe before he interrupts and pulls you back in for a more passionate kiss.
Benji makes his presence known by blowing a foil horn at both of you. The loud sound startles you away from the kiss. "Ew, was his tongue in your mouth? Or was that your tongue? Either way, tongue was involved here." He holds an accusing finger up at the two of you as his face twists in disgust.
Theo places a hand over Benji's forehead and directs him away. "Stop making things weird. Keep moving."
"I'm making it weird?? But that can't be sanitary!"
You hide your face against Bucky's shirt, both of you shaking with laughter. Tears fill your vision from a combo of the cold weather and your laughter. Your face burning up from both the exertion of laughing and the embarrassment of being called out by your nephew.
You finally look up and go to wipe your eyes but Bucky beats you to it. His finger slides along your cheek first and then gently swipes his thumb under your eyes. He takes extra care to wipe some of your smudged eyeshadow at the corners and he smiles warmly at you in the process.
"Are you gonna finally let me call you mine, or will Benji need a 12 step plan drafted up to help convince you?"
"I dunno, I might have to update my cootie shots and consult with the counsel. It's a whole to-do."
He growls and goes to squeeze your sides again, playfully nipping at your chin and cheek, "C'mere."
You giggle as you try to back away but he only squeezes you closer, "I'm still waiting for an answer," he locks his arms around you, holding you in place.
"How could I say no to this face?" You try to go squeeze his face but he has your arms pinned to your sides.
"That's not a proper answer," he squeezes tighter. "Are," he leans closer, "you," and closer, "my girl," his nose brushes against your cheek, "or not?"
"Yes."
You let out a surprised squeal as his bends slightly, moving his grip around your hips and upper thighs, lifting you off the ground and giving you an excited spin.
You gather the group back up and start to head back to the house. This time Theo gives a dozing Benji a piggyback ride.
You squeeze Bucky's hand and smile over at him. He squeezes back and pulls you closer as you both continue walking behind the group. You still can't believe how this all started. You're still expecting to blink and this all was one big hallucination.
Nora unlocks the front door as you return to the house and you all make your way back upstairs after discarding your coats and shoes.
Theo and Nora grab their pillows from the couch and decide to go sleep in their room. Theo's snoring would keep everyone awake. Although you're surprised Nora doesn't want to stay. She claims without Theo's snoring it's too quiet for her to fall asleep.
They offer Sam the couch, "If you stay down there, Benji sleeps like a starfish and moves around as if he's fighting crime in his sleep," they warn him on their way back downstairs.
"I do not," Benji grunts as he sits up while rubbing at his eyes. He reaches a tired hand up and pulls at a dangling string. A series of sheets pinned to the ceiling fall and section you all into your own little separate fort areas.
The couch area is almost completely covered, and both sides surround you and Bucky into a somewhat tent-like section together.
You hear snickering and look over to see Benji and Sam making shadow finger puppets at each other through the sheets.
Bucky moves to kneel while he grabs his pillow, and starts to shift as if he's going to stand up.
"Um, where are you going?" You ask.
"Home?" He answers, his eyebrows scrunched in confusion.
"What do you mean home? It's late, just stay here?"
"I'm not sure that's a good idea."
"Why? Do you turn into a green ogre like Fiona?"
"I hate that I understand that reference now."
"You loved that movie and you know it. Stay and we can watch Shrek 2."
"They made another one?" He looks baffled at this fact.
"Oh, my sweet Fiona," he rolls his eyes at you, "there's a whole franchise. At least 4... or 5? Maybe 6. I'm honestly not sure at this point, but we're going to find out."
"Oh no."
"Oh yes," you grin and grab the remote. You reach for his hand and tug him back down.
Everyone has settled into their spots. Monty and Prudence have already fallen asleep by the time you find the movie.
"Hey, Shrek 2!" Sam cheers quietly.
Bucky places a hand over his face. You try not to laugh as you grab his pillow from him and place it back in it's spot behind him. He moves his hand down to look over at you and shakes his head. You continue to grin over at him as you press play.
-
"You're still awake?" You whisper. The movie ended at least 15 minutes ago. Everyone else peacefully snoozing around you. Well, it's 50/50 on how peaceful Benji actually is, judging on the awkward position he's contorted and passed out in. Oh to be a kid and not worry about your neck and back again. You're already positive you're gonna be regretting this floor slumber later today, even with the foam padding attempt under you.
It's not that Bucky doesn't want to sleep, he just...can't. Too many people in the room. Too self conscious of having a nightmare and potentially disturbing the rest of the sleeping occupants. The last thing he wanted to be was a burden or a nuisance. His mind is also telling him to stay vigilant as he watches the staircase entrance.
He shrugs as his short answer, not wanting to voice his thoughts out loud.
"Sleep magic run out on you?" You joke, trying to lighten the mood when you see the dark look in his eyes, the wheels turning in thought behind them. You can tell he's fighting his answer, a look of uncertainty on his face, but a lazy smile appears. He shakes his head at you.
Laying on your side, you scoot closer and grab his right arm, hugging it against you. "Can I borrow your sleep magic then?"
Bucky smiles over at you as you drift off. He tugs your pillow closer and tucks it against his arm some more so your head and neck are more comfortable. He places a gentle kiss to your forehead, letting his lips linger for a moment. He slowly tilts his head back up towards the ceiling. However, he continues to stay awake. Silently watching the stars and swirling patterns dance across the room. Soaking in the comfort and the feeling of being surrounded by people that care for him. In their own dream worlds.
Benji starts to stir with a slight grumble. Bucky lazily turns his head and watches the shadow of a small lump shift slightly closer to him behind the sheet.
"Un Buc, m'gumdrops. Gone," he mumbles together in his sleep. "How dare...th's m'ne. Hmmph." He shifts again, an arm and leg flailing as he turns over and starts to settle back into a deep sleep. Bucky shakes his head in amusement and goes back to watching the ceiling.
-
Hours later, Bucky is still awake when everyone starts slowly shifting and waking up. He hears Prudence and Monty shift around as they quietly make their way downstairs.
You start to stir and stretch next to him soon after. He watches as you rub your eyes and then bury your face into both your pillow and his arm. He waits a moment to see if you're awake. You finally peak up at him, giving him a slurred greeting.
"Mornin', " he greets back with a tired smile. You clock the dark circles under his eyes.
"Please don't tell me you've been awake this whole time."
"Course not. I feel fresh as a daisy."
"Liar."
You sit up, grab your pillows and drag him downstairs.
"Where are we going?" He asks at the bottom of the stairs. You ignore his question and approach the door to your room. "Can't drag me to your bed fast enough, huh?"
"Oh baby, you're about to get hours," you pause and look over at him, leaning up closer, "and hours," you lower your voice and kiss his knuckles quickly, "of great sleep. Let's go." You pull on his arm again and direct him over to the bed. You give him a push towards it and take a step towards the side table. He sits on the edge of the bed and watches as you open the side table drawer, pulling out a small spray bottle. Uncapping it, you give two quick spritzes over the pillow areas and one more in the general area over the bed behind him before putting the cap back on and tossing it back in the drawer.
"What the hell was that?" He blinks at you.
"Lavender spray," you shrug and walk over to your dresser. "It's supposed to be calming and relaxing to assist you with falling asleep." Opening a bottom drawer of the dresser you pull out a water bottle and set it on the side table.
Bucky watches in amusement, observing the other bright colored packages of what looks to be a snack stash in the same drawer before you close it.
"Are you one of those doomsday preppers? Or is it a hoarding thing? What else do you have stashed around here?"
"Look, I'm just trying to survive in this household. Benji and his little friends eat everything. I'm terrified when puberty hits. Also, I don't feel like going all the way downstairs when I'm thirsty," you shrug. "Now will you lay down?"
You pull the blankets back, "Chop chop. Don't make me dump that whole bottle of lavender on you."
He rolls his eyes and lays back against the pillows.
"Is this ok? Are you comfortable? Do you need space and want me to leave?"
He scoots back and grabs your arm, tugging you onto the bed next to him. You sit on the edge of the bed and he pulls your arm again, and then places a gentle hand on your leg making you lay down next to him. You lay on your side facing him.
"That didn't answer my questions. Do you need music? white noise? a bedtime story? I can go grab the comforter," You continue to ramble on.
"Just a good night kiss," he pouts his lips towards you.
You lean over and place a soft kiss to his waiting lips.
He smiles and wraps his arms around your waist, hugging you to him. "Goodnightmorning," he whispers.
You let out a soft laugh in return and place another kiss to his cheek which gets another smile from him.
You start to lightly run your fingertips up and down his forearm and then repeat again lightly with your nails, back to your fingertips.
He hums in appreciation.
"Goodnightmorning. Sweet dreams," you whisper back as he drifts off.

𐙚₊˚ or if you grab his hand to walk through a crowd together without losing each other, he'll try to suppress his smile as best he can, but ultimately fails because??? your hand fits perfectly in his???? hello????
𐙚₊˚ sungho becomes really cute and soft around you. he shyly smiles when you wave to him across campus!!! or if you're hanging out alone watching a movie, he'll share his blanket with you and shuffle up to your side so your legs are pressing against each other's (and yes it's an excuse to be closer to you!!!)
𐙚₊˚ gets pretty protective over you. if you fall and scrape your knee, he's carrying you to the nurse asap (even if it's just a little cut :<). better yet, he'll take care of you himself, treating you so gently as he bandages up your wound and tells you to be more careful cause you could've gotten really hurt!!
𐙚₊˚ really playful with you! probably lightly teases you about your cute habits, does bunny ears above your head when you take a selfie, pretends to bite you when you tease him back ^___^ just like a giant kitty
𐙚₊˚ sungho is not one to keep secrets and he's pretty straightforward, so i see him confessing to you first >< he'll probably make it really intimate, like bringing you flowers and then taking you to a picnic in the field </3 there are literal sparkles in his eyes when he watches the way the sun hits your skin! just something super sappy where it can just be the two of you and he can confess all of his honest feelings with no interruptions!!!
˚ ⋆。˚ riwoo
𐙚₊˚ riwoo is incredibly shy around his crush!!! he'll probably be the most physically awkward out of all of them lol like if he has to partner up with his crush for a conversation, he'll literally die a little on the inside because he gets so flustered around you, he can barely speak!!!
𐙚₊˚ he definitely keeps his crush on you to himself. for one, he wants to be able to admire you from afar and he's simply happy with just liking you! and for two, he doesn't want his friends to embarrass him around you ><
𐙚₊˚ probably screams into his pillow whenever you text him first >3< or smiles behind his hand because you are texting him!!! he replies back super fast too because he doesn't want you to think he's uninterested!!!
𐙚₊˚ he'll always try his best to make you smile around him, even if it involves him making a fool of himself!!! if you're in the same room, he'll text you something funny and wait to see your reaction from across the room ^___^
𐙚₊˚ worries about you so much :C if you seem extra tired in class, he'll check up on you, asking you if you need anything!!! he'll sneak snacks into your bag, switch seats with you if you get the wobbly chair, and he's just overall very attentive!!! if you don't show up for class out of the blue, he's texting you right away to make sure everything is okay and if you need him to bring you anything!!! <3
𐙚₊˚ very adaptable to you. if you're grabbing lunch together and you mention a specific menu you like, he's ordering the same thing! and if you're studying together in his dorm and you say you're hot, he'll immediately turn on the air conditioning (even if he's shivering </3) he always prioritizes your comfort
𐙚₊˚ loves to have long and deep conversations with you. enjoyes hearing about your plans for the future, and your goals and aspirations!!! he's all for learning what makes you tick so he can cater to your needs better <3 he just loves learning about you as a person because you are so interesting to him and you have a way of scratching his brain just right
𐙚₊˚ riwoo would be so so so nervous to confess. he'd run over what he wants to say multiple times to himself before you even show up to the park he's meeting you at. and when you finally do show up, all of his effort goes straight out of the window and he forgets everything he wanted to say </3 so he just says "y/n. i like you." and you giggle a bit because you already know!!! you were just waiting for him to say something >< and when you tell him so, riwoo gets so blushy and shy before asking if he can take you out tomorrow!! officially :3
jaehyun ˚ ⋆。˚
𐙚₊˚ everyone will already know he has a crush on you before he even knows!!! he finds a way to mention you in every conversation and starts smiling like an idiot whenever someone says your name <3
𐙚₊˚ becomes your very own puppy ^___^ if you weren't already friends before jaehyun starts liking you, then you are now! he'll ask to be your partner whenever he gets the chance, gets excited for you when you share good news with him, does whatever you ask of him
𐙚₊˚ like if you mention you want a certain drink from the store, jaehyun is up and out of his seat in the blink of an eye!!! or if you say that your feet hurt from walking around all day, he'll give you a piggy back ride home!!!
𐙚₊˚ he invites you out to everything like "hey y/n, did you want to go to this party with me tonight", or "hey y/n, are you busy later? maybe we can go to the carnival together", or even "hey y/n, can you come with me to buy toothpaste please"
𐙚₊˚ intense eye contact whenever you have something to say. he does that thing where he cocks his head at you with gentle eyes and nods along to whatever you're saying, reacting to everything and giving you little smiles here and there <3
𐙚₊˚ becomes the loudest, goofiest person ever around you. he's cracking jokes left and right, sharing stories that he knows will entertain you, etc. he literally just goes on autopilot freak mode because he's driven by pure impulse when you're around ><
𐙚₊˚ once you guys are comfortable around each other, he gets pretty touchy!!! he'll give you tight hugs whenever he greets you, brushes hair out of your face if you're focused on your work, gives you random fistbumps and high fives just for an excuse to touch you ><
𐙚₊˚ jaehyun's confession would be so out of the blue, he even surprises himself. he'll be walking you back home after a late-night study session and he'll just get such a big rush of emotion when he looks at you in the moonlight and he'll just blurt out that he likes you!!! he'll quickly cover his mouth with wide eyes and be like "did i say that out loud...?" and you just laugh at him because he's so cute before confessing that you like him too <3
˚ ⋆。˚ taesan
𐙚₊˚ if taesan has a crush on you, you might think that he simply doesn't like you >< he'll avoid eye contact at all cost, walk in the opposite direction if he hears that you're coming, ducks away if you enter the room. he gets so overwhelmed everytime he sees you, his fight or flight kicks in lol
𐙚₊˚ perks up if he ever hears your name mentioned in public. like he'll be totally locked in on his computer or something and as soon as he hears your name in a passing conversation, he'll sit up straighter and look around to see if you're nearby >< he might even listen in on someone's conversation just to hear what they're saying about you
𐙚₊˚ he stresses out so much about whether or not to speak to you first if you're not already friends. he'll pace his room, ask his friends if you're seeing anyone, runs over every possible outcome of him talking to you (and the only thing he's trying to do is introduce himself </3)
𐙚₊˚ when he finally does build up the courage to talk to you, he's a stuttering mess!!! it already took him 32978 hours to even convince himself to finally talk to you, and when he does, he finds himself tripping over his words a lot and stumbling through greetings </3
𐙚₊˚ taesan is the type to buy you your favorite drink from the cafe and then "run" into you and say "hey, uh i just had an extra one of these." and then he quickly gives it to you before running away and you're just like he is so cute (because it's so obvious that he likes you)
𐙚₊˚ once you guys get closer, speaking to you would be like a second nature to him!!! he just needs to break out of his shell a bit >< he'll ask you to meet him at the bench outside of your dorm/house at like 2 am just so you guys can talk alone (and if he "accidentally" had an extra hoodie in his backpack for when you start to get cold, no he didn't >3<)
𐙚₊˚ i said it before and i'll say it again! taesan loves loves loves sharing music with you. he'll make you multiple playlists (all with subtle meanings and confessions hidden in them) and send them to you!!! he might actually malfunction if you do the same as well (and he will read into every lyric of every song you send)
𐙚₊˚ he'd confess when you guys are at a record store together, checking out vinyl. he'll pick a song that perfectly captures everything he wants to say that he can't put into words, and you just look so pretty flicking through all of the albums, and he knows this is his chance!!! so he puts the vinyl on the record player and calls you over to place the headphones over your ears and as you listen, you realize what's he's trying to say and you give him the biggest hug ever that makes him stumble back a bit with a big smile, wrapping himself up in you <3
leehan ˚ ⋆。˚
𐙚₊˚ definitely the type to stare at you from across the room with that soft gaze, just watching you exist. observing which hand you write with, your little quirks and habits, the clothes you like to wear. just learning about you from afar. he might even scroll through your social media too :<
𐙚₊˚ his line from serenade when he's like "hey, the weather is nice. want to go for a walk?"!!! he'll stroll with you quietly, making small talk, asking you how your classes are going, and he gets really giggly if your hands accidentally brush each other's <3
𐙚₊˚ leehan will find any way to accommodate you! if you mumble that your head hurts in class, he'll ask the professor to dim the lights for you! and if you're cold, he'll insist you take his jacket!!!
𐙚₊˚ if leehan has a crush on you, he will mentally act like he's married >< if someone else tries to confess to him, he'll respectfully reject them because he only has eyes for you!!!
𐙚₊˚ he laughs at all of your jokes, even if they are terrible >< it's not even forced laughter though!!! he genuinely finds you so endearing that everything you do is cute to him
𐙚₊˚ speaking of cute!!! he calls you cute a lot. you'll do the most mundane thing ever and he'll just watch you with a tiny smile, thinking that you are the cutest thing to ever exist. he might even say it out loud just to see you get flustered <3
𐙚₊˚ loves when you rant/vent to him!!! he thinks it's so special that you see him as a safe place to go when you're stressed, and he'll do anything to ease that stress. he'll reach over and give your hand an encouraging squeeze, listening intently to everything you say, and give you advice if you ask for it!!!
𐙚₊˚ he would probably confess to you after months, or even years of being friends!!! when you guys are alone, probably having a midnight talk about anything and everything when he goes "y/n. i really like you." and it'll catch you so off guard and get you so flustered, but he just couldn't wait any longer!!! and when you breathlessly confess that you like him back, he'll pull you into the tightest hug ever with an airy laugh, relieved that everything worked out <3
˚ ⋆。˚ woonhak
𐙚₊˚ he's in lalaland before he even strikes up conversation with you </3 woonhak will literally daydream about you all the time, zoning out in class just thinking about you for hours!!! he'll probably even imagine scenarios of you guys together to help him fall asleep at night lol
𐙚₊˚ he so obviously likes you, but for him to actually tell you is a whole different story. he just likes you so so so much and he's really scared of his feelings being rejected, so he forces himself to believe that he's okay with just being friends with you <3 he thinks that having you like this is better than not having you at all
𐙚₊˚ that doesn't mean he doesn't show you he likes you though! you are his go-to person for everything. like if he got a new shirt, he's asking you if you think it looks okay (and if you show any hint of disliking it, he's never wearing that shirt again because your opinion is the only one that matters)
𐙚₊˚ facetimes 24/7!!! he'll call you whenever he's bored and you guys will just carry on with your own lives while still on facetime, occasionally falling into conversation before going about your day again
𐙚₊˚ like he'll literally call you just so he can brush his teeth while watching you study! or if he's walking to the store, he'll facetime you to show you how great the weather is (and he'll convince you to meet him at the park so you can have ice cream together <3)
𐙚₊˚ woonhak will be at your side as soon as you need him, no questions asked. if he calls you and can hear in your voice that you were crying, he's rushing over to you asap!! his shoelaces won't even be tied and his jacket will be inside out because he was trying to get to you so fast </3 immediately pulls you into a hug and reassures you that you're never alone as long as he's here
𐙚₊˚ if you ever compliment him, his entire year will be made. i imagine him doing that thing where he smiles so wide, his eyes bunch up and his shoulder reach his ears and he's just a giant ray of sunshine ^___^ he won't waste any time complimenting you back either!!!
𐙚₊˚ he'd confess to you by making you a big basket of gifts n stuff, topped off with a handwritten letter </3. it'll be full of plushies, your favorite snacks, pictures you guys took together in photobooths, cute stickers that he'd think you like, random stuff in your favorite color ^___^ his handwriting will be messy and you can see that he wrote and erased many times, just trying to find the right words to say!!! it's all so personal, sweet, and thoughtful <333
reblogs are greatly appreciated! thank u...<3

First Crush - 11
You just walk into the event site and it's already a win. They gave Abby a paper wristband and she thinks they gave her a bracelet as a gift. It's going to be a fight later when you have to cut that off her.
Bucky leans down to you, "What's the game plan?"
"Maybe we can walk through everything first, to see what they have and see what Abby likes? Is that ok?"
"Sure, whatever you want, doll."
Looking at Abby up on his shoulders, "Let me know when you want me to carry her. Or you can let her walk. She can get heavy."
Giving you an insulted look, "I'm a super soldier. My ruck sack is heavier than she is."
You put your hands up in surrender, "Sorry, Super Soldier." You adjust Abby's backpack on your back and follow them. You weren't sure what they'd have here, so you packed some of Abby's necessities, but you don't think you'll be needing it. There's a section marked off for a dozen or so food trucks, a small stage & tents sent up. Some families where on blankets having picnics. Others were under the tents. "I've never taken Abby to Coney Island or a fair like this before. This is all new to her." You look up at Abby & she is so wide-eyed trying to take everything in.
You stop at the tent of Midway Gallery of Games. You watch people play trying to win stuffed animals & all sorts of prizes. Some of the Agents were yelling & getting rowdy in their competition. You look up and you notice Abby looking frightened & covering her ears. "Baby?" You hold your arms out to her, and she frowns & reaches out to you. "It's ok." Bucky deposits Abby into your arms & rubs her back. "It's a little too loud, huh?" You make your way out of that section & head to the rides. "Ok, this is better. It's quieter out here."
You walk pass the rides, Abby showing zero interest. She has her thumb in her mouth & snuggled into your neck. All the noise and lights were too much for her. You walk a little further and come across a petting zoo. "Abby, look!" You put her down & hold her hand, leading her to the pens.
"It stinky, Mama." Bucky laughs as she scrunches her nose.
"But what are those?"
She squeals, "It's baby duckies!" You let Abby run over to the pen & one of the workers walks up to her with a duckling in her hands and asks Abby is she'd like to pet it. "Mama?" You smile & nod. She's so good & gentle with it. You pull out your phone wanting to get pictures, and the worker takes Abby to a stool to sit & places the duckling in her lap. She's so adorable, You thank the worker & Abby waves goodbye.
"Mama did you sees me? The baby duck sat on my lap!"
"I did, Baby! You were so good with the duckling." And that's how the next half hour goes by. You visit all the babies. PIg, chicken, rabbit, lamb, horses, cows...the baby goats were a little too wild for her. Abby ran to Bucky asking for "upsies".
"I'm ready for a snack. Who wants a treat?" Abby gives you a quick look to see what your reaction is. You raise your hand, so Abby copies you & yells out "Me!" You go to a nearby stand to pick out some lemonade & ice tea in Avenger logo mason jars. You're ready to pay for it, "I'll get it, my treat."
"It's all taken care of. Stark is picking up the tab. The food, rides, games, it's all unlimited."
"That's insane, Buck!" He shrugs and hands you another lemonade. He noticed you were just going to share one with Abby, which you happily take. He grabs a churro for you all to share. He wanted to get one in every flavor for Abby, but you nixed that idea. The last thing you need is for her to get a tummy ache. And you already know you want to get her cotton candy later. That'll be enough sugar to blow her mind.
You take a break to eat your snacks & sanitize your baby after touching all the animals. You bring out the baby wipe & hand sanitizer. Bucky laughs at you, but Abby doesn't care because she now smells pretty, not like the stinky animals.
Now that she's in a better mood, you'll give the rides another round & see if she's interested. She did a round in the jumper house. You're so worried because she's so little and you don't want her to get trampled on, but that's part of being a kid. She fell down & couldn't get back up with all the other kids jumping but she was laughing as she crawled to the wall to get herself back on her feet. She came out of there all sweaty & cheeks pink from laughing.
Then the 3 of you went on the ferris wheel. She didn't want to go until you said you'd all go together & that she could sit in the middle so she'll be safe. She had a tight grip on Bucky's Vibranium arm, but after the first time around, she relaxed and enjoyed it. She could see everything being so high up. Bucky said they could ride it again at night so they could see all the lights and maybe even the fireworks.
The Carousel was next. "Do you want to ride the pretty horses?"
"Oh Mama!" She tries to spin you so she can see her backpack, "It's a unicorn, like i gots!"
Bucky laughs, "You want to ride that one?"
"Yes! I needs to." She jumps up & down. You all wait in line for the next group to enter. Once Abby gets up to the gate, Bucky scoops her up and makes a mad dash to find the unicorn. You hear her screaming with laughter. You try to chase after them. Abby is pointing him in all different directions & giggling. Finally they capture the unicorn for Abby to ride. You take quick pictures of Bucky & Abby with her unicorn. "Mama lookit!"
"It's so pretty! You look like a fairy princess, baby!" There's so much joy on her face you want to break down & cry.
Buck nods over at the horse across from Abby, "Get on."
"No, I don't..."
"Yes, Mama! You needs to!"
"I got her," Bucky resting his arm around Abby's back. "Ride with Abby."
You climb up on the horse as the ride starts and you feel silly and carefree all at the same time. When was the last time you were on a carousel? "Mama, you looks like the fairy QUEEN!"
Bucky looks up at you, "She sure does." You feel your cheeks heat under his gaze.
The ride was over way to quickly. Bucky helps you both off your horses & escorts you outside the gates where Steve awaits you all. "Mr. Captain, you sees my unicorn? I rides him & didn't falls off." Steve so surprised that Abby's even acknowledging him, he laughs.
" You know what? I did. I saw you and your Mama racing up there, and i think you won."
Abby covers her mouth with her hands & giggles, "Mama, I wons you!"
Bucky wraps his arms around you, pulling you back against him, "Did you? Mama was going really fast."
"No, I wons. Mr Captain says so."
"Well, if Mr. Captain says so," Bucky shrugs.
"You guys had lunch yet? Or visited the food trucks?"
"Not yet. Are you hungry Abby? Want to find lunch?" She nods & jumps up and down.
There's so much food and snacks to choose from. The guys end up with BBQ plates and you and Abby are sharing pizza and tacos. You're enjoying your break when Abby stands up on the bench and starts waving, "Frien'! Frien'!" You look around to see who she's calling. "Mama, pretty lady!"
"Natasha."
"N'asha! N'asha!" Abby jumps down & runs to Nat. Bucky's already on his feet ready to follow her. Natasha sees her & picks her up and walks her back over. You can see your baby's mouth moving a mile a minute. "But the goat was jumping and jumping. I's so scared, but Bucky lifts me so they can't gets me."
Taking a seat next to Bucky, "Wow! You had some excitement, huh?"
Climbing on the bench next to you, "It was baby but it was big like me. Ands you know what?"
"What?"
Gulping for air because she's talking so much, "Mama & I race, and my unicorn won. Mr. Captain says I wons her!" Abby claps for herself.
"You won. Not you wons her." You roll your eyes but inside you heart in overflowing with love for her excitement and how everyone is so kind to her. You were so worried about being a single parent and not being able to give your baby the life you wished for her. But you think you'll actually be able to do that. Things are looking up for you both. She's going to remember this day for a long, long time. You both will.

LAST SHOT - first meet
synopsis : interning at a random ship in space sounds like a great idea for your paper. don't you think? part -> 1 | other chapters -> 2 3 ?
characters : anya, swansea, daisuke, curly, jimmy, gn!reader (daisuke x reader if u squint)
content : filler. lots of filler. lots of people being people. the series is sort of a fix it fic (?) only warning is mention of.. jimmy... eugh
wc : 3.4k+
before you read, reader is : cold, non expressive, and a psychology major...
close to an oc.. but also not an oc? features of the reader is never described, and i wrote it as gender neutral as possible
- you were an intern in the pink pony express.
- .. more specifically, a university student with honours in their bachelor's degree in psychology. you did plan on going back to get a masters once you're done with this internship. the pay wasn't much, but since it covered your living expenses for a year, and since the internship being valid enough to put into a research paper (after confirming there's psychological tests in the ship) you say this wouldn't be so bad.
- ..or so you thought.
- the first day you boarded the ship, you were baffled by the lack of security measures of what, or what you can't bring to the spaceship. sure there were manuals, but the actual boarding of the ship? no security, at all.
- you knew the conditions that the company puts their employees in from online forums.. so you tried to prepare beforehand with a backpack. woo! (it took you hours to recount your basic needs)
- you managed to sneak on board your little backpack (it was huge) and thankfully, you managed to stash it away in your room before anyone else noticed.
- .. and thankfully the directions were easy to read as well, otherwise you'd be lost.
- you don't want to bring all that around the tour of the ship either, so this would be the most efficient solution.
- pretending to be waiting in front of the ship unnoticed was also easy. however, imagine the surprise when another intern trips into the spaceship, last second.
- the captain - you find his name to be curly, only managed to give you a brief welcome, before asking the nurse of the ship - she introduced herself as anya - to show you around.
- whilst going around, the other intern tried to start conversations with you. which briefly went as follows:
"hey! my name's daisuke, yours?"
"y/n."
"woah! cool name!"
"..."
"..not much of a talker...it seems... hehe.."
- you only nod in response.
- anya seems to have read the room, and immediately guided you away to introduce you to two other people instead. swansea the mechanic, and jimmy, the copilot.
- however the atmosphere persisted. you stayed in silence most of the time. daisuke was close to starting another conversation with you, but seemed to back out last second.
- you feel rather bad for being cold towards him. but your body is way too exhausted to respond. maybe you should’ve brought some painkillers as well..
- ... or perhaps you could pay off your sleep debt on this trip as well. ahh… a faithful wish..
- that aside, you also found out you would be interning under anya. she was soft spoken, and overall, you have a feeling that you wouldn't mind sticking by her side for the next.. year.. or so.
- having a singular nurse for a 6-man crew isn't too bad. but now with her teaching you the basics, you think that you’re capable of taking some of her responsibilities. (you're glad to take some weight off her back)
- you agreed on weekly psych checks with the crew (much to swansea’s and jimmy’s dismay) so you’re ready to keep your journal very, very filled.
- the routine was simple. you'd wake up, check your stash of items which included - airtight sealed snacks which consisted of a lot of sweets, your journal, a lot of thrifted power banks for your ds to charge on, your ds of course, a taser, a gun, and a personal emotional support voicemail on one of your mp3 player - then go into the lounge for breakfast, and finally, follow anya around for the rest of your day.
- sometimes you would bump into swansea and daisuke while you're passing by the utility room. and sometimes daisuke stops you for a small talk
- you eventually warm up to him. he's awfully smiley for someone close to your age, then you find out he doesn't go to college, and your question was quickly answered.
- after a bit more small talk, you realise that you both were from the same town (what a small world)
- he mentions that he missed eating a specific candy - it’s called sunshines, silly name, you know - which you could only get from the bakery near your town, and you look away, fully knowing that you had the same candy in your bag.
- .. oh well. maybe another time.
- your interactions with swansea was rather limited.
- you both see each other and simply choose to ignore each other's existence.
- perhaps it's a part of you that sees through him. and he sees through you too.
- silent understanding is a better word, perhaps.
- you both only talked on the few occasions where you were there to take your psychology evaluation tests. he keeps complaining about daisuke and whatnot - but you know that look in his eyes. that’s not hate.
- after a while, he stops complaining - resorting to grunts and short answers. perhaps tired of attempting to trick you.
- quick yet blunt. the way you prefer things to be.
- you sometimes offer to read out daisuke’s psych test to him. only the parts where you deem as okay to say, though. mostly parts where you ask how his internships are, and him answering with praises towards swansea.
- swansea refuses each time, but you read some of them anyway. when daisuke complains about swansea though, you read out his response to "how was your day". which mainly consisted of his joys of the day.
- swansea pretends he doesn't like it. once again, you know that look in his eyes.
- you thought he would be done with acting around you, but you suppose, ego can't be beaten sometimes
- you really like their father-son-like dynamic. you just hope daisuke doesn't let the old man's words get to him.
- after doing curly's and jimmy's psych test (jimmy needed a lot of convincing in order for him to take these seriously) you find that they were friends that go way, way back.
- you're unsure if curly could see it, but you could tell that jimmy admires him. that man admires curly a bit too much. you're familiar with situations like these. you just hope it won't tip towards envy. oh who you were kidding - it's almost too late now.
- you finally realise why you felt uncomfortable around jimmy after the first month.
- the envy and self depreciation is overwhelming, and you truly applaud anyone who holds a conversation for longer than five minutes. (maybe you should applaud yourself as well)
- self destruction is the only path he’s going towards, and you would help him if he wasn’t so.. stubborn. for a lack of a better word.
- but overall, this trip isn't too bad so far. right?
- its been a month and a half.
- you and anya had formed some sort of sibling relationship..?
- it started with her seeing one of your stickers you had placed on one of your items, and her nostalgia of having them on her cup as well.
- you both began to talk more from there. continuous stories about your daily life (which isn’t the most pleasant) but you got to know each other better from there.
- you were immediately stunned at her determination and passion for nursing. - and perhaps, after this all, you could plausibly send a recommendation in for her.
- you didn’t tell her that, of course. you weren’t able to guarantee it, and you wouldn’t want to give false hope.
- you find that she was incredibly good at games after you lent her your ds. and all of sudden, her competitiveness on game board nights didn’t look so out of place after all.
- she had encouraged you to get out of your shell.. despite many protests from you. (it.. sort of works…?)
- curly, after more interactions, seems to be a great guy. great leader, optimistic despite.. well. everything else, really. you’d be miserable if you had to live outside of earth half your life.
- the very brief interactions you have with him were pleasant.
- a bit concerning to think he’s carrying all this responsibility for all these years though. perhaps a little rest could do - is what you said.
- he only responded with a chuckle, and a ‘it is what it is’.
- there isn’t any other response you would’ve expected from him, anyway.
- you just hope that once he does find the end of this career, he’ll find something more.. lighter.
- maybe a baker. maybe a craftsman. maybe something else entirely, all you know that this whole leadership thing might end up causing him more harm than good.
- which is what jimmy turned out to be.
- whenever it’s your turn to do jimmy’s evaluations, you always groan a bit.
- you show a bit of interest, and he goes the mile to talk about himself. not quite boasting - but very much putting others beneath his shoes to seem… “relatable” to you.
- you only nod. you give him a small phrase from time to time, but otherwise - it’s all nods.
- the issue with jimmy is not his current state itself. sure, it’s annoying and insufferable - but what’s dangerous is next stage of what people like him become.
- envious. greedy - dangerous. you wouldn’t trust him even if it kills you.
- and so you don’t. you try to keep a wary gaze on him.
- another thing you find that swansea is quite similar to .. other people in your neighbourhood.
- he talks about how he’s been struggling with alcohol, on a particularly hard night.
- you listen. he keeps talking. you add on his statements a little bit from time to time, to show that you’re listening. otherwise, you’re dead quiet, eyes staring at him, and his eyes towards the false sky by the medical bed.
- he complains to you more than anything though. about.. nearly everything. about how daisuke won’t do this properly, about the food for dinner, about him being unable to see his wife at home, how he won’t be able to see his kids grow up, and you, in exchange, tell a bit about yourself.
- he understands you; and you understand him too. you were both trapped under the same situation at the start of your lives, and you, by chance, managed to escape.
- he makes a joke about it. it leaves a bittersweet taste in your mouth.
- …although.. this meant that you were a bit privileged in the way swansea treated you.
- this showed in the way that he allows you to mess with his toolbox (maybe you were the only other person who was interested in his toolbox, aside from daisuke..)
- he teaches you the basics, and daisuke often chimes in from what he had studied before from swansea as well.
- you often thank the two for the lesson, and swansea seems a bit more smug after, whilst daisuke seems more proud of himself.. and due to that, you are more than welcome in the utility room.. from time to time.
- ah, speaking of daisuke..
- he’s incredibly sweet. you wonder if he particularly needs the sweets anymore from how overly sweet he is. you do end up sharing your snacks either way, and thankfully, he’s obedient enough to only request one sunshine every one to two days. (at this rate, you might have just enough to last you the entire.. 9 months? close to 8 now..)
- he also plays games, and showed you his own ds, stickers of pokemon, doodles, and small little things indicating his other interests were plastered all over it - which you end up telling anya.
- this is where anya’s willingness to help you connect with others come in.
- not before long, you, anya, and daisuke managed to make a post-game night activity.. which included playing the ds until you all reach the specific curfew anya had set (thankfully, she did set one, otherwise daisuke would’ve tried to beat you until his fingers fell off.)
- there was one time that he was too tired, and you had to drag him back into his room. with an arm slinged around your shoulder, and anya following behind in your footsteps, he stayed asleep the entire time.
- he wasn’t drunk. hell, do you even have alcohol in the ship? the answer was no. unless you were to drink cleaning alcohol.. but point is. he didn’t get drunk, and he was just that tired. you wonder what kind of new training he’s been trying to do.
- you tried your best to drag him, but once you were beside his bed, you had only one choice.
- you slowly placed him back into his bed, lifting his leg up to remove his shoes - before placing him properly on the bed.
- anya had already excused herself back to her room, and with the silence (and occasional snores from daisuke), you find yourself observing daisuke’s room.
- pink weights, a very, very patterned backpack, and a charger. those were the main things that caught your eyes.
- .. and you had his ds in your hand. so out of kindness, you went over to plug in his ds for him.
- before you left him alone, you checked up on him for the last time. he’s sleeping soundly. you try to close the door as silently as possible.
- you hope he continues to dream tonight.
- so far the worst thing you had to witness from the male was the absolute mess that was his laundry pile.
- it started when you - whose room was beside daisuke’s - smelt something akin to the concentrated scent of the (sun) detergent.
- you knocked at his door, and only a muffled wait echoes inside, before you could hear him tripping over his own feet to open the door.
his eyes meet yours - looking quite frazzled. He’s heaving slightly, perhaps a side effect of rushing to get the door.
“h..hi!”
the detergent smell only got stronger, and it became very much obvious that he.. had a little accident with the laundry. your focus flickers between the mess he is, and the mess behind him.
“...did anything happen?”
he chuckles nervously, avoiding eye contact.
“oooff course not! and i almost forgot that i had to- uhm- change my sheets! so see ya soo-”
right as he was about to shut the door, you had kept it wedged open with your shoes. his eyes actually meet yours, again, and you tilt your head slightly, arms folding.
“i can smell it from the hallway. let me help you.”
“no- i can do it!”
you send him a particular stare. it seems to make him falter, and you sigh once more.
“let me help you.”
he looks hesitant, his grip on the handle weakening. a moment passes, and then he closes hie eyes, and smiles at you - defeated.
“alright then... but don't be angry!”
- as you step in the room, you’re met with the sight of.. very, very many bubbles on a stack of clothes.
- and when you look back at daisuke, he only offers you a guilty grin, and a look that said i told you so
- that’s the story of how your fingers managed to smell like detergent for a whole week, and the event that hallmarked your almost instant closeness with daisuke.
- ever since the laundry accident, you two have been together quite often.
- every lunch break was simply just sitting alone, until anya or daisuke approaches you. If anya approached first, then daisuke followed. if anya couldn’t join you in the lounge, then you’d go to the medical bay, and if you’re allowed in - daisuke would follow right after.
- everytime you manage to get spare time to lounge on the extended sofa, daisuke immediately joins you. the only difference from before was the way he joins you on the couch. sometimes by closing your eyes from behind and asking you to guess (even when it’s apparent), sometimes by jumping or launching himself to the spot beside you.
- every now and then, he scares the living soul out of you. he laughs until you start chasing him with a cup in your hand.
- he tries his best to make you laugh. the best he got so far was an amused stare from you.
- apparently, it’s good enough for him. he cheered the entire night you made that expression.
- on his psych tests, he talks a lot.
- there’s.. not much time to talk to you. you only realise once he starts to talk about his week, instead of his day.
- nowadays, you focus on getting your analysis done. how each person’s behaviour have changed - in general, of course. you’re not going to mention their every detail, and rather, you ask them to fill out little questionnaires (which is the only detail you’re submitting)
- usually, before you got close, he mainly talks about his day, and only his day.
- sure you spent a lot of time together, but since this was the only chance to be truly alone, it’s usually the time that he opens up.
- he barely does so. but it’s much easier to see his emotions on his face, with far more vulnerability.
- it starts from little things, like how he really thinks swansea might get tired of teaching him. or maybe the way jimmy got mad at him because he accidentally spilled oil on his shirt.
- then it turns to things in his house. how he missed his mother, how he missed seeing his cat, how he felt like he had to take this internship because he felt like he had to prove something.
- you offer him hugs from time to time. he accepts them.
- sometimes you feel tears soak into your shirt. you try your best to comfort him after. whether it would be rubbing circles into his back, or offering him an extra piece of sunshine - you tried your best.
- you know you aren’t the best at that. but if this is all you can do, then what else should you do?
- sometimes you wonder if this ship really does need to be human automated.
- what costs do they cut by hiring human workers instead? innovation? investment in machinery? why keep people on barely minimum wages in a random ship being sent out to space, with minimum facilities and minimum safety and security? isn’t it a safer bet to go all out with machinery, then turn a profit later down the line - rather than close to losing this hunk of metal nearly every other day?
- then you look into the lounge in what is assumed to be “six in the morning” - you don’t trust the clocks. everything feels fake - and get hit by literal beams of sunshines in your way ( read : curly, anya, and daisuke laughing together )
- maybe you can keep those thoughts for another day. you ate.. pretty okay pancakes that morning.
- perhaps the only thing you wished you could change, in definite terms, was the way jimmy lingered around anya’s room.
- so stop it you did. or at the very least, attempted to stop it, you did.
- that’s the main reason you ended up sleeping on the front of anya’s room. (with her permission, of course)
- the reason you proposed to her was, and you quote,
“i keep on having dreams of cockroaches.”
- anya looked at you half asleep. the other half concerned, worried, and confused. you shuffled in front of her room, your hand hauling a mattress and your blankets awkwardly.
- .. she finally allowed you after a small while. maybe its because you looked pathetic. maybe its something else. you do not know, and you don't want to know.
- you eventually placed your mattress back into your room (due to the lack of space, you should’ve expected that - your only reason was that you did this on a whim), and slept on the floor, facing the walls with your blanket covering you like a silkworm.
- it’s not comfortable. thank god the tulpar has - at best - subpar air conditioning, otherwise you’d freeze to death in this huge metal hunk in space.
- it successfully warded off jimmy though. or so you’ve observed. so you really don’t mind the way your back aches every morning.
- maybe you should bring more pillows…
the door behind you croaks slowly, and slowly- your eyes peek open, looking up at a dimmed figure. an anya-looking dimmed figure. you immediately relax back in your blanket.
“..nightmares again?” she looks concerned about your sleeping position. for a moment, you feel bad for lying.
you purse your lips, and nod at her.
“.. yeah.”
she watches from the door, and nods at you.
you think she finally figured out that you knew about jimmy’s recent lingering. she spares you a thankful glance, and sends you a soft nod.
“..goodnight. thank you.”
you nod back, and once the door shuts back, you slump further. as much as these metal walls allow you, anyway.
you hope you dream this night. maybe of home, or of something sweet. maybe of something better.
you aren't sure what that something is. but you hope you find it soon.
but, oh, who were you kidding.
you never got the chance to dream. this night isn't any different.
you slip into a void; your body awaiting tomorrow.

one.
Ding ding.
"Vernon, wake up, you stupid buffoon!"
The sounds that reaches Vernon's ears are quiet and muffled, but enough for him to rise upright from his bed. A yawn leaves his mouth as he brings his hands up to wipe at his dry, half-lidded eyes, feeling the ache leave his body as he stretches his arms up towards the ceiling.
Ding ding.
As he finds his conscious gradually returning, Vernon turns his attention towards his window, sunlight spilling in between the crevices of his curtains and casting a soft, golden glow across his bedroom. He blinks, feeling the pull of sleep still lingering, but the constant dinging that isn't coming from his phone doesn't give him much time to relish the comfort of his bed.
Ding ding.
Sluggishly, Vernon pushes the curtains squinting as sunlight floods the room more intensely. His eyes adjust, and through the brightness, he spots a familiar figure outside𑁋you. You're perched on your bike at the foot of his driveway, one hand on the handlebars, the other ringing the bell obnoxiously.
A small grin tugs at Vernon's lips as he opens his window and leans out slightly, the cool air hitting his face. Even though you're quite far from him, he can still catch sight of the frown at your face.
"I told you to set an alarm!" You holler out towards him. "I better see you down here in ten minutes sharp or I will tell your sister to lock your door!"
Vernon laughs softly to himself at your threat, shaking his head.
"Alright, alright, chill out,” he calls back, before pulling his back inside and shutting the window, trying to stifle another yawn bubbling out of him.
Ten minutes. That's the ultimatum.
Knowing you, you'd probably follow through on that threat if he didn't hurry up. With that in mind, Vernon moves quickly, grabbing his hoodie off the back of his chair and throwing it on while fumbling for his phone.
After a quick splash of water to his face in the bathroom, he snags his backpack and shoves in a water bottle and a few snacks before bolting out the front door, ignoring his mother's calls towards him to eat some breakfast first. He's barely down the steps when he sees you circling the driveway again like you're about to leave, an eyebrow raised in mock disapproval.
"Only thirty seconds left," You tease, your foot tapping on the pedal.
"You were about to leave," he huffs while grabbing his bike helmet.
You roll your eyes with a teasing smile, stepping up to him to help clip the helmet around his head. Vernon stiffens for a moment as your fingers lightly brush against his chin while adjusting the strap. The closeness catches him off guard, and for a split second, his breath catches in his throat. You don't seem to notice, though, quickly fastening the helmet on his head and stepping back with a satisfied nod.
"There. Now you won't crack your head open," You say, giving a few playful taps to the top of his helmet. "Take this as a lesson learned from now on: never be late to a friend date, or any kind of date for that matter."
Vernon snorts at that. "You sound like my mom."
"Glad I'm a great influence then," You remark, before pushing off with your bike.
Vernon rides after you, the morning air hitting his face and slowly filling his lungs with energy. The neighbourhood still remains quietly at peace, the sun slowly rising in the sky, and he finds comfort in the familiar routine. He follows closely behind you, your laughter ringing out as you ride ahead of him.
"Where are we even going?" Vernon asks as you both round a corner, passing by the little figurine store that the two of you used to frequent at when you were younger.
You simply smile to yourself. "Just one of my favourite spots."
From that, you both continue pedaling through the park that still looks the same even when you were born. Tall trees filter rays of sunlight, casting them gently upon the dirt road your bikes stumble over. It's one of those mornings where everything feels perfect, and the weight of the world seems to lift, if only for a moment.
The two of you then arrive in an open, empty area still surrounded by nature on all of its sides, perfectly hidden away from the paths that cut through the park and from the bustling noises of the town.
Your bike drifts to a stop, with Vernon following suit, and you turn toward him while taking off your helmet with a beaming grin.
"No fucking way." Vernon's eyes widen in surprise. "You fixed it?"
"I did!" You exclaim excitedly. "When you went to Korea last month I took it all into my own hands. She's as good as new."
A small treehouse looms above the two of you, its weathered wood now painted with fresh paint, sturdy frame reinforced with new beams. It stands confident and proud against the clear sky above, and Vernon swears the wave of nostalgia that hits him is unlike anything he's ever felt before.
"I can't believe you actually did it," he says, marvelling at the work you've put into it. "You were so determined when we were kids that you would fix it one day, and I thought you were just being sentimental."
You chuckle at that, a light blush creeping onto your cheeks. "I really wanted to bring it back to life. Besides, it was kind of therapeutic to work on it."
The warmth plaguing your words has Vernon gazing appreciatively at you for a few moments, watching the way your eyes are focused on nothing else then what was once a hidden gem of your childhood. There's a particular warmth spreading within his chest as well that he struggles to name, but it feels nice𑁋too nice, almost.
"Come on, we gotta go up!" You take Vernon by the wrist, startling him out of his thoughts.
The ladder is a bit crooked and unsteady as you climb up together. He follows closely behind, his heart racing not just from the excitement of being back in the treehouse, but also from the adrenaline𑁋the pure happiness𑁋that radiated from your touch, even if it was only brief.
Once you both reach the top, you pull yourself inside first and then help Vernon up, your hands steadying him as he awkwardly maneuvers himself through the opening.
The space is cozy, with enough room for both of you to sit comfortably on the wooden floor. Sunlight streams in through the small windows, casting over the blanket you've already laid out, and a tiny table you had made from reclaimed wood sits in the corner. An unlit string of lights hangs around the walls, waiting for an opportunity to brighten up the space as evening falls.
"Wow," Vernon utters out, peering around the space. It's like stepping back in time, but better. "You went all out, man."
"What can I say? I'm the man of this friendship." You say cheekily, grinning while settling down on the blanket. "I mean, can you believe we used to play here all the time? It still feels like yesterday that we graduated from fifth grade."
Vernon leans casually against the wall behind while unwrapping a chocolate bar and tossing another one towards you. "And we used to think we were the coolest kids in the neighbourhood."
You laugh infectiously at that, and the sound brings a buzz of flutters to his chest, his heart. He glances at you, a little bit taken aback by how easy it is to fall back into the rhythm of your friendship. It's moments like these that make him realise how much he missed this𑁋how much he missed you.
You lay back with him, brushing your shoulder against his. "We were so happy back then, weren't we?"
"Yeah," he murmurs, voice a tad quieter now. The nostalgia is bittersweet, reminding him of how carefree life used to be. "We were."
For a moment, the air seems to thicken. Vernon glances over at you, your expression contemplative yet hopeful, and he wonders if you're feeling it too.
"Do you think we could ever get back to that?" You suddenly ask, breaking the silence. "Or... has everything changed too much?"
Vernon opens his mouth to respond, but the words get caught in his throat. He's not sure how to answer. He tilts his head, staring at the ceiling of the treehouse, and takes a moment to think. Things have changed𑁋you're both older, life is messier now, and yet here you are, sitting in a treehouse like nothing ever happened, like no time passed between the years.
Something in his chest tightens𑁋something he hasn't quite acknowledged before.
"I hope so," he finally manages, a soft smile playing on his lips. "I really hope so."
two.
"You're telling me you don't remember this place?"
"Yeah, I do, actually," You huff, crossing your arms together and peering around this secluded spot that you're in, which was some sort of creepy ass alleyway between the comic book shop and the laundromat. "I've seen this place on TV, you know, where someone gets murdered."
"I think you should get your brain checked out," Vernon inputs, before crouching on his knees and reaching to get something out of his pocket.
You watch as he takes out a small Ziploc bag of what seems to be snacks, clearly not murder evidence, and opens it up. He grabs one of the snacks and holds it out. You could only stand behind him skeptically, eyeing him with curiosity.
"You're not seriously feeding whatever creature lives in this alley, are you?"
Vernon flashes you a knowing smile, ignoring your comment, and gently calls out, "Here, kitty, kitty."
Then your jaw drops down to the pavement below, and you find yourself kneeling right next to Vernon. There's some movement behind some boxes hidden away in the shadows, and before you can even process what's happening, a scruffy cat emerges. Its fur is matted and dirty, and it looks like it could use a good bath, but there's something endearing yet familiar about its wide green eyes and twitching whiskers.
You turn towards Vernon. "Wait. Is that...?"
"Matilda," he finishes for you, then meets your eyes. "Now you remember, right?"
"I didn't think..." You turn towards Matilda, watching the grey-coloured cat sidle her way up to Vernon and the snacks in his hand. "I didn't think she'd still be here. I remember when we used to come here after school and feed her our leftover sandwiches. She was such a little troublemaker."
"Right?" Vernon chuckles, reaching down to scratch behind Matilda's ears. She purrs loudly, nuzzling against his hand. "I thought she was gone for good. I mean, it's been years."
The memories of your carefree afternoons spent feeding stray animals that roamed the streets come flooding back all at once. You can almost feel the sun on your skin and hear the laughter that accompanied each of those moments. It was such a simple, innocent time.
Leaning in closer, you extend a hand towards the cat with a small smile. Matilda seems to recognise you too, her green eyes widening momentarily before she allows you to pet her.
"She's gotten even fluffier since we last saw her," You add, aimlessly letting your fingers get tangled in her fur.
"Or maybe she just hasn't seen a brush in a while," Vernon jokes, his laughter echoing in the alley. "But she seems happy. I wonder if she remembers us."
You laugh at the thought. "Of course she does. We were her favourite humans, right Matilda?"
Matilda only lets out a soft meow in response, leaning into your touch as if she remembers every moment you shared. A blanket of contentment wraps around you comfortingly, chuckles leaving you and Vernon's lips as Matilda rolls over on her back to expose her belly for a good scratch. Your hands keep moving instinctively, gently brushing over her fur, and for a moment, the world around you fades away.
You nudge Vernon lightly with your shoulder. "Should we make her a house? In case it rains or something?"
Vernon doesn't even take a second to think before grabbing ahold of a box, briefly examining over it for any damage. "How about we start with this?"
"Sure. And we could stop by the store later to buy her some food, maybe a pillow or two?"
"Bet, bet."
The two of you work in comfortable silence as you piece together what could only be described as a makeshift cat house. It's made out of cardboard, but it was better than nothing.
At the corner of your eyes, you notice how focused Vernon appears, cutting small holes for windows while you line the interior with some old newspapers you found. Matilda watches curiously from her spot to the side, occasionally swatting at the scraps of cardboard that fall near her paws, her tail standing up straight in the air.
"Hey, Vernon?" You call out to him.
Vernon redirects his attention toward you, and imperceptibly, there's almost a twinkle of worry in his eyes as he looks up. You nearly forget what you were going to ask𑁋if you're even going to ask anything.
"Yeah?" he questions.
Then all you do is simply grin, shaking your head lowly.
"Nothing."
He narrows his eyes towards you, before letting a smile cross his own face as well.
"Okay." Vernon steps back a little, clapping away the grime that accumulated on his hands. "How does this look so far?"
You step back with him, taking a good look at the cardboard house you and Vernon had just put together. It's rough around the edges, but for something the two of you put together in the middle of a dark and suspicious alley, it looks pretty sturdy.
Even Matilda herself seems pretty satisfied with the final product, already crawling her way into the tiny house with a curious sniff. She circles around the small interior, settling down comfortably on the crumpled newspaper, her tail twitching contentedly as she curls up into a ball.
Then, you turn to Vernon, studying his profile as he gazes down at the little cat house. The familiar curve of his jaw, the way his eyes soften when he's focused on something𑁋it's all so... Vernon. For a moment, you're not just in some random alleyway, but back in those simple afternoons when things were lighter, easier.
"I think she likes it," Vernon coos softly, reaching over to pet Matilda's hand. "Don't you, Matilda?"
Matilda responds with a contented meow, making you and Vernon exchange a set of chuckles.
Later that evening, after the two of you take a quick pit stop at the pet store to buy Matilda some food and setting it for her, along with a small, cozy blanket, you find yourselves strolling down the street of your neighbourhood. The sun has started to set in the horizon, bringing an angelic, orange hue to the skies above.
"I remember you had such an obsession with Matilda after watching the movie," You recall as you teasingly lean your body against Vernon's side.
Vernon rolls his eyes, playfully putting his weight against you as well. "You were the one who was convinced you got telekinetic powers after watching it three times."
"You forced me to watch it!"
"No, I did not!"
Swiftly, you wrap an arm around Vernon, tugging him into lighthearted headlock, ruffling your hand through his hair. Laughs leave both of your mouths as he struggles to wiggle out of your grasp, but you only tighten your grip around him.
"Okay, okay, bro, chill," he manages to say through his laughter, finally breaking free from your grasp and turning to face you, his hair sticking up in all directions.
His cheeks are flushed from the laughter as he tries to tame the disarray on his head. And for a few seconds, you both just stand simply there, breathless and grinning like morons, and there's a pinch of awkwardness that floats in the space between you two, yet it feels so familiar and comfortable.
You used to have worries about you and Vernon drifting apart as life took you both in different directions. But for some reason, a small part of your mind is convinced that no matter how much time has passed, you'll always seem to find your way back to each other. As cheesy as it sounds, it's hard to imagine living throughout your life without a glimpse of him in it.
Somewhere in the background, somewhere in the crevices of your heart, there will always be a place for him to stay.
"First one to the end of the street owes the other a milkshake!"
Before Vernon could even blink, you're already bolting down the road.
"I𑁋You've got to be shitting me, dude!" he exclaims while racing to catch up to you.
three.
"Vernon, I think we should go. It's about to rain𑁋"
"I can't believe they closed it!"
"We're gonna get caught for loitering!"
You pull him by his hoodie, dragging him backwards from the empty building that was once the local arcade you both would venture to after school. It seemed to have closed down and ran out of business some time in the past years, and its faded, graffiti-covered exterior looked nothing like the vibrant, lively place you remembered. Broken windows, boarded up with old planks of wood𑁋it all told the story of abandonment.
Vernon just stares at the building, a dejected look to his features. "Just... remember how much fun we had here? And now it's all gone."
You do remember. You remember everything𑁋the colourful flashing lights, the sound of buttons being mashed in unison, the smell of greasy fries from the snack bar and spilled milkshakes on the floor, the way you and Vernon would challenge each other to every game in the room. You'd spend hours trying to beat each other's high scores on Dance Dance Revolution until your legs gave out from exhaustion, or battling one another on Street Fighter until your fingers cramped, laughing so hard you could barely breathe.
"Yeah," You mutter, glancing back at the broken windows. "I remember."
Vernon doesn't say anything for a moment, just keeps looking at the building like he's trying to hold on to the memories before they slip away completely. Eventually, he exhales and turns away, hands stuffed into the pockets of his hoodie.
Above, the sky has seemed to darken quite significantly. Vernon kicks a pile of sticks in his path and watches as they scatter clumsily across the pavement in all sorts of directions. You look over to him.
"Are you okay?" You ask.
"Yeah," he says, but the thin line that forms to his lips doesn't quite match his answer.
"You don't have to pretend around me, you know," You tell him softly. "It's okay to miss it. I miss it too."
You notice the way his shoulders droop slightly, and you bump your shoulder into his to grab his focus.
"We still have the memories we made in there. Those will always be ours," You explain to him with a wistful look. "There's still plenty of time in the world to make more."
His gaze drops to the ground, but you can see a spark of something𑁋hope? Maybe even longing?𑁋flicker in his eyes. "You make it sound so easy."
"It is easy," You prod lightly, yet affirmatively. "We're making new memories. Like now."
"Now?" He casts a glance towards the empty street and the shrouded sky. "We're walking down an ugly road, and it's about to storm."
A sudden boom of thunder claps in the distance, making you jump a little. Raindrops start to fall down to the ground below, beginning to land on top of your head and dampening spots on your shirt. You exchange a brief look with Vernon, and before any one of you could say anything, you're running down the street.
Vernon might never understand your sudden bursts of energy and probably never will, however he takes off after you. There's this surge of worry that courses through him that you'll be sick the next day if you get soaked.
"Y/N, wait up!" he yells out after you, shielding his hands from the rain landing on his face.
You dart down the sidewalk, splashing through puddles and dodging the splattering raindrops, feeling as if you're in a scene straight out of a movie. The rain begins to pour down even harder, soaking your hair and clothes, but you don't care. You're alive, and so is this moment.
Every step you take makes laughter bubble up from somewhere deep within you, spilling over and blending with the sound of the rain. But just as the thrill of it all reaches its peak, you notice Vernon lagging behind, his expression shifting from exhilaration to worry.
"Y/N!" he shouts again. "You're going to get soaked!"
You look back and see him running, his dark hair plastered to his forehead, his hoodie completely drenched from the rain. The sight is endearing and oddly captivating. You slow down a little, letting him catch up as you both take a moment to catch your breath.
"Come on, let's go find some cover." You take him by the wrist and lead him towards a nearby overhang, its metal roof jutting out like a protective arm from the side of a small convenience store.
Vernon leans against the wall and wipes his face down with his sleeves, while you shake off the water like a dog. He can't help but chuckle.
"I hope you know that you're fucking insane," he says casually, voice coming out in puffs as he attempts to catch his breath.
"Maybe a little," You say as you lean on the wall right next to him, the two of you finding yourselves gazing out at the falling rain all around you. "But you still put up with me."
Vernon faintly smiles at that, letting out a sigh. "Unfortunately."
Some silence passes as the two of you stare out into the rain together, a singular light fixture brightening the area around the overhang the two of you are standing under. Even if the world was crashing down loudly, the quietness that settles in the space between you and Vernon is comforting.
You let your eyes drift to Vernon, taking him in for a few seconds, noting the way his hair clings cutely to his forehead and the way his cheeks glisten from the droplets running down his face.
"You know," You start, a thoughtful tone to your voice. "there were a lot of chances for you to leave."
Vernon turns to you, a bit puzzled. "What?"
"Like, you could've, you know... stopped being friends with me for whatever reason at any point in time," You continue, voice growing softer. "But you never did."
His tongue feels too tied together to think of a proper response to that, so he just settles with a quiet, "Oh."
"Why?"
Vernon blinks at you, caught off-guard by your question. He shifts slightly, running a hand through his damp hair, letting out a soft laugh that almost sounds nervous.
"I don't know," he simply answers, and when he turns to meet your eyes with you this time, you refuse to acknowledge how you've always wanted to say how beautiful they are to look at𑁋how beautiful he is to look at. "I guess I never wanted to."
four.
A deep breath that almost resembles a snore makes you lightly kick Vernon in the leg with your knee.
"Ow," he squeaks out, shooting his eyes back open to glance at you. "What was that for?"
"You were falling asleep," You mutter out, before resting your head back on the hard surface your body was sprawled upon.
You don't exactly know what time it is because you left your phone back inside Vernon's house to charge. Vernon's own phone was resting right by his head, playing calming tunes that float up into the cool, night air, yet the boy himself appeared too relaxed and unbothered to check the time either.
Both of you are lounging in the open trunk of the truck in his driveway, the tailgate down as your legs nearly dangle off the edge. You lie side-by-side, staring up at the night sky through the thinning clouds. A few stars peek out, twinkling faintly, and the world around you feels like it's at complete peace, as if there was no such thing daring to disturb it.
You even allow yourself to close your eyes for a few moments, letting the peacefulness of the night wash over you. It feels like one of those nights that stretch on forever, where time doesn't seem to matter, and you could stay like this for hours without a care in the world.
"Vernon?"
"...hm?"
"Can I pick your brain for a moment?"
Beside you, his chest rises and falls slowly. "Shoot."
"When I said we should have friend dates to our favourite places, I didn't think the trunk of your mom's car would be one of them."
Vernon lets out a soft chuckle at your comment, his hand lazily reaching up to rub his eyes. He props himself up for a minute to check the time and skip the song that was playing on his phone, before laying back down right next to you. He doesn't give an answer right away, the silence easing its way between you again, but it's not uncomfortable. It feels easy, familiar, the way it always does with Vernon.
You don't notice the small, amused smile that plays on his lips as he gazes back up at the twinkling sky again.
"I probably could have thought of somewhere better, huh?" he muses lightly as he stretches out his limbs, his arm brushing against yours. "Sorry."
"It's okay," You reassure him. "But seriously, is this one of your favourite places?"
You swear you could hear him pondering the question, can even visibly see the way contemplation flows over his features as he stares upwards, even if you weren't exactly looking at him. There's a nervous stutter to your own heart as you wait for his response.
"Nah," he finally answers. "Not at all."
You click your tongue at that. "Okay... so why are we here? Let's go to another one of your favourite places, please."
But Vernon only refuses to move. "I'm already in it."
The confusion hits you even more, forcing you to sit up and look at him with a teasing, annoyed expression. However, Vernon doesn't budge from his spot, simply taking the moment to find a bit of delight at how you look so perplexed.
"Gosh, maybe you should sleep. You're not thinking clearly." You jab a playful, threatening finger in his direction, but he just laughs it off airily, carrying enough warmth to make you drop your head back down.
"I'm thinking just fine, thank you," he says, a teasing lilt in his voice. His eyes flicker to yours for a brief moment before they return to the sky. "You just haven't figured it out yet."
"Figured what out?" You feel a slight twinge of impatience, but mostly curiosity. His cryptic tone is starting to mess with you.
Vernon exhales slowly, as if whatever is inside him is anticipating coming out any second. He turns his head slightly toward you, the corners of his mouth twitching up into a soft smile. "You asked if this is one of my favourite places, right?"
You nod, trying to read the expression on his face, but Vernon keeps his gaze on the stars, his words floating out into the calm night air as smoothly as the music playing beside him.
"It's not the trunk that makes it my favourite." He pauses, then glances at you, appearing a bit unsure of his next words, before adding, "It's because of you. Wherever you are... that's my favourite place."
You blink rapidly, trying to process his words. He looks back up at the sky, like it's the most natural thing in the world to admit, and that familiar stillness settles between you again. Only this time, the air that you breathe into your lungs is a bit more heavier than before. But it's not painful𑁋not even close𑁋it's quite the opposite, actually. Relieving, even.
"Vernon, I..." You start, but the words stick to your tongue. "You really mean it?"
Vernon huffs another deep breath, still fixated on the sky above.
"Yeah," he states. "It's simple, really."
Your mind can barely comprehend everything he's just said, or everything he's said to you up to this point. It's even harder to put it to actual words.
So you choose to lay back down next to him, placing yourself down beside him. Your arm momentarily touches his, but you don't pull it away; instead, your let your hand drift a little, until you feel the slightest, most unnoticeable touch of his pinky finger against yours. You don't go any farther than that. Not right now, at least.
"Vernon?"
"Mhm?"
"Is this... still a friend date?"
Some thoughtful silence passes. You hold your breath. Vernon shifts his face to look over at you.
"Do you want it to be?"
Another round of silence rolls over.
"No," You confess quietly, almost like a whisper.
Vernon only blinks once, before exhaling softly and bringing his gaze back up at the stars, which seemed to have gotten brighter.
"Okay."

had a little idea about Spencer and his son
It was one of those mornings. The kind where everything seemed to take twice as long and every small task turned into a monumental challenge. Spencer was in the living room, kneeling in front of his three-year-old son, Daniel, who was sitting stubbornly on the couch, arms crossed and a determined look on his face. He furrows his brows like his father and pouts like his mother.
"Come on, buddy," Spencer coaxed, holding out a pair of tiny sneakers. "We have to get going. How about I read you an extra story tonight if you put your shoes on now?"
Daniel shook his head, his lips forming a firm line. "No shoes."
Spencer sighed, running a hand through his hair. He had tried everything: promises of extra stories, his favorite snacks, even the lure of a trip to the park. Nothing seemed to work. He glanced at the clock, knowing they were running out of time.
"Please, Daniel," Spencer tried again, his patience wearing thin. "We really need to go."
"No shoes," Daniel repeated, his little chin jutting out defiantly.
Just then, you walked into the room, taking in the scene with a knowing smile. "What's going on here?"
Spencer looked up at you, a mixture of frustration and helplessness in his eyes. "I've tried everything to get him to put his shoes on, but he won't budge."
You nodded, walking over to the couch and kneeling down to Daniel's level. "Daniel, honey, can you please put your shoes on for Mommy?"
Without a moment's hesitation, Daniel hopped off the couch, grabbed his shoes from Spencer, and sat down to put them on. Spencer watched in amazement as his son quickly complied, bringing his shoes to you to help tie them.
Spencer shook his head in disbelief. "Momma's boy," he said with a wry smile.
You laughed softly, tying Daniel's shoes and giving him a quick hug. "Just like his dad," you replied, looking up at Spencer with a teasing glint in your eye.
Spencer chuckled, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, I guess I can't argue with that."
You stood up, taking Spencer's hand and squeezing it gently. "You're a great dad, Spencer. Sometimes it just takes a different approach."
He smiled, leaning in to kiss your cheek. "Thanks. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Well, lucky for you, you'll never have to find out," you said, wrapping an arm around his waist as you both watched Daniel run off to grab his backpack.

Head on your palm, heavy eyes slowly closing with every dreary words that your biology teacher says, you fight a yawn from escaping since the last time someone yawned in front of Mrs. Weathers they got kicked out of class. But with the boring subject about symbiotic relationships in the wild, that you most definitely already know since you did the advanced reading, you're tempted to yawn loudly and widely just so you could escape from this biology hell.
The air is crisp, October air breezing through you from the open window to your left. Clad in your cardigan and yellow corduroy pants, the cold still seeps into the thick fabrics. It's a comfortable cold but with you sitting still for more than an hour without stretching your limbs has you freezing in your seat.
You risk getting called out by Mrs. Weathers if she notices you looking out of the window for even a second. But you are so bored out of your mind that you'd rather stare at the oak tree outside than continue to listen to her yapping about symbiosis. Having the brilliant idea to hide your wandering eyes from the teacher with your hand slightly covering your profile, now safe from her piercing gaze, you watch as the orange leaves dance with the breeze.
There's a pile of dead leaves at the bottom of its trunk, and you wish you could jump inside and never have to study biology ever again. It must be so warm and cozy inside, with the orange and yellow leaves as your sky and walls, you'll live like a tiny mouse queen ruling over your land. You think of all the stuff you'll bring inside your little leaf kingdom, your sketchbook is definitely a yes, and also your big pack of colorful markers and pencils is an absolute need. You'll need some snacks of course, some eggos and cheese balls would suffice. As for sleeping, you guess you'll never need to sleep when you have so much time to do anything you want in your leaf kingdom.
Yet, you think you'll be lonely inside. Sure you can bring your gameboy or your care bears, but they can't exactly talk and have the most riveting banter with you. With a smile, you plan to bring your best friend with you to your autumn kingdom. Hobie can be your bard or your right hand man. It's perfect, you think, a perfect place where it's just you and Hobie where there's no more school to attend, no more grades to keep up, just you and him having fun in the pile of leaves.
With a sigh, you blink slowly as your eyes get heavier and heavier with every daydream. Fighting the sandman from having his sandy grip on you, you pinch your cheek subtly. Opening your eyes, a familiar silhouette appears right next to the oak tree. Long arms waving in your direction, legs jumping to get your attention. Blinking rapidly, it's none other than Hobie who has the widest grin on his face when he notices that he finally has your attention.
He motions for you to go outside, beckoning you over dramatically. Miming that he'll cry if you don't go outside. You think otherwise, quietly giggling at his antics.
After the realization, you straighten in your seat, wondering why and how he got outside when he's supposed to be in maths.
A loud thwack slams against your desk, jumping awake, Mrs. Weathers shakes her head, tongue clicking in agitation.
“If you're not prepared to listen in class it's best that you should leave, miss L/N.” She says, gritting her fake teeth.
“Okay,” you stand up to collect your things, shoving your notebook and books inside your already full backpack. Your reply has Mrs. Weathers confused, since you are her best student.
“Wait—” you've never seen her flabbergasted, your classmates snicker silently in their seats, some even clap and cheer you on.
Giving them all a shrug, you exit the classroom before she grabs you back inside. With the door shutting close, you sprint towards the exit. Trainers squeaking on the linoleum, backpack heavy, you push the double doors open with your shoulder. Hobie greets you outside just as the fresh air whips at your cheeks.
He claps slowly but surely, face proud with a smug smile. “I've got to hand it to you, Pingu, I did not expect that. I have successfully made a rebel out of you.”
Hobie stands on the grass like he owns the entire school, hands tucked inside his jeans, thumbs tapping on his metal belts that clinks against each other when he moves. For once, he's dressed for the weather, the old worn leather jacket now fits him better than last year, it was bigger on his shoulders back then. Puberty works in mysterious ways, you think. A denim vest lays on top of the leather, handmade pins of his favourite things are all tacked securely on the denim. Its edges are frayed, but you know it was intentional since you're the one who helped him do it. The thrifted ‘Queen’ shirt you gave him on his birthday is the perfect size, but you know that he'll only be able to wear it for a couple of years at the rate he's growing.
No one would think you two are best friends judging by how different your styles are, or how different you are to him. Personality wise, likes, dislikes, it's all different, sometimes you wonder how you two get along. But you wouldn't have it any other way.
“How'd you get out of maths?”
“Climbed out of the window before Mr. Keery came in.”
You doubt his story. “Yeah, right, your classroom is on the third floor, Hobie.”
He feigns hurt, “my own best mate doubts my abilities?” You roll your eyes, but the heat in your cheeks says otherwise. “‘m great at climbing, I could climb down from that height.” You stay silent, looking at him with a raised brow and unblinking eyes. “...fine, I faked sleepin' by snorin’ loudly, happy?”
You touch his shoulder with a mischievous smile. “Hobie, you don't have to fake snore because you snore like an elephant giving birth.”
“You're very funny,” he takes your wrist to push your hands away. You now notice the new nail polish on his nails. “That doesn't even make bloody sense.”
You ignore him, mouth agape and shocked at his painted nails. “You finally coloured your nails?” You take his hand that has nail polish sloppily painted on. The paint even reaches to the edge of his nails, painting his skin with shadowy black. “You could've asked me for help, y’know.”
“It's part of the style” He shrugs, taking his hand away before you can feel his pulse pick up.
“Sure, even the bubbles are in style.” You tease with a playful smile. “So why'd you call me over here?”
“Got bored, then thought you're also bored so I went to your window so we could skip the rest of the day.” He purposely skips the part that he knows exactly where you always sit.
You gasp. “Wait, I thought we were just skipping class, not skipping the rest of the day!” Hands on your hips, you shake your head. “And here I thought there's like a really cool… stick or something.”
“A stick?” He chortles.
“Yeah, like the one you found a few days ago that actually looked like a sword.”
“Nah, I wanted to—” A high pitched whistle echoes out, startling you both. Finding the source of the sound, the school guard is currently running towards you. The hundreds of keys on his belt jingles, cheeks red from all the whistle blowing.
“Oi!” The yells, pointing accusingly at you two.
With wide eyes, Hobie takes your hand before sprinting away. He practically drags you along with him, bigger strides than you, he looks over his shoulder to check on you. Unsurprisingly enough, he has a huge grin on his lips, as if he planned all of it.
You follow his lead, dead leaves crunching under your shoes, backpack weighing you down. Yet, he doesn't leave you even though you're slowing him down. You appreciate him for not letting your hand go, but you don't like how your heart hammers against your chest when you look at your intertwined hands.
Finally reaching the metal fence, Hobie chucks his backpack over it. It's not that tall for him, he could easily jump over it with no problem, but with you still waiting on your growth spurt, it'll be a challenge for you. He knows it too, without asking he grabs your bag off your shoulders, he then quickly throws it over the other side before crouching down with his hands on top of the other.
“C’mon, Pingu, up you go!” Hobie flicks his eyes over to the guard, he's glad that the guard isn't exactly a track star. The whistling gets louder as the uniformed man gets closer. “Hurry—!”
Before he could finish saying the word, you shakily put your foot on his palm. With one strong push, and a jump from you, Hobie hoists you over the fence. You miraculously make it over, landing on your side with a groan. Hobie follows a second later, climbing like his life depended on it. Immediately grabbing each of your backpacks, then putting both on one arm, he lifts you up from the pavement with one hand just before the guard could even reach the fence; you two race off across the street, huffing and aching from the daring escape.
Going around a corner, Hobie leads you towards an alley. He skids off to a stop, heavy bags falling off his arms.
Hands on your knees, lungs burning, and face sweaty from the run, you check behind the corner if the guard is still after you.
“He won't follow us anymore. We're out!” Hobie exclaims, exhilarated, and grinning widely. He leans on the wall opposite of you, chest heaving, laughter echoing around the empty alleyway.
Copying his stance, cracking a smile, you laugh together with him. “You're a bad influence, Hobie Brown.”
“And you're a great influence, Y/N L/N.” His smile and his shining eyes says it all: we balance each other out. “Too bloody nice, that's what you are.”
You shake your head, chin resting on your clavicle to hide your lopsided smile. Heat on your cheeks, you seem to find yourself having the same expression lately whenever you're around him.
“Where to?” He asks once he caught his breath.
“My choice?” You ask, smile permanently etched on your lips.
“‘course,” Hobie says it like it's the most obvious thing. He was supposed to add to his sentence but he shuts his mouth before he could let the word escape.
You excitedly perk up. “The mall?”
He makes a face. “I'd rather stay in maths.”
“Arcade then?”
“They'd kick us out,” you knit your eyebrows in question. “Because we're skippin’ class, they put up that fuckin' sign a few weeks ago.”
“Oh right, I forgot. How about the record shop? Mike's cool, he might let us stay until classes are over.”
Hobie pushes himself off the wall, strutting over to you, your heart quickens for some reason. He pats shoulder with a smirk. “Your best idea yet,” taking both bags off the grimey floor, he puts them both on each shoulder. It's your turn to smirk at him. “What?”
“Nothing,” you say in a sing-song tone.
He clicks his tongue, avoiding your eyes. “C’mon then, before someone sees us here and thinks we're skippin' class.”
“Hobie, we are skipping class.”
“Not if we act like we're not.”
“...what?” You chuckle, blinking in confusion. “What would you do?”
“Nothin’, let's go.” He walks away from you.
“Oh come on, what will you do? Will you put on your best acting skills like how you faked being sick in front of the nurse? Because she was definitely convinced that you had chicken pox!” You giggle, following him, matching his longer strides.
“It worked, didn't it?” Hobie turns his head away from your playful glance.
“Yeah, because you had an actual fever. But sure, your drawn on chicken pox was very convincing.”
“I'm an artiste, Y/N.” He says, trying to do a french accent.
You snort, “sure, and I'm the queen of England.”
“Alright, your majesty.” He stops, “carry your own luggage,” your bag thuds on the pavement. “I don't want to help some parasite.” Smugly walking away, you feign hurt with your loud gasp.
“You…you doodoo head!” You yank your bag, wearing it properly on your back. Running after Hobie, he has a mischievous smile, one you're all too familiar with.
“Doodoo head? That the best you can come up with?” He says before bolting off, leaving you in the dust.
“Hey!” Running, you follow him with a laugh. “Asshole!”
—
Finally reaching the vinyl shop, the bells jingle as you two enter. The smell of plastic and cheap air freshener lingers in the air, the ancient shaggy carpet is soft under your trainers. Shelves upon shelves of records greet you as you roam your eyes around the different album covers. It's a slow day so the store is empty except for Mike the cashier who has headphones on.
Hobie sniffs dramatically, “home sweet home!”
Mike cracks an eye open, with a groan after seeing you and Hobie standing by the door, he chucks his headphones on the counter, looking disgruntled. The denim jacket with hundreds of patches and bottle cap pins is large on his lanky frame.
“Oh great, Hobie's here.” He says sarcastically, long straight hair flipped over his shoulder with one move from his head. “And he brought his little girlfriend. Hi, Y/N, you still hang out with this arse?” He points at Hobie who doesn't bother correcting him anymore. “Seriously, I thought you were smarter than that.”
“D’you finally have it, mate?” Hobie acts like he's the same age as Mike, even though the teenage cashier could be his older brother. Ignoring Mike's jab, he waits for his reply.
Wanting to quit his job is clearly seen on his face. Then he considers the fact that he needs to save for college. With a sigh, he points towards the end of the store, where you think ‘it’ is there.
Hobie punches the table with a thump, then he excitedly bounds over to where the cashier pointed. “Thanks, bruv.”
“Cyndi Lauper?” You ask, all wide eyed and shy. “It's not at the front anymore.”
“Over to the right, just across where your boyfriend is.”
“He's not my—nevermind, thanks.” Walking past all the display, Hobie guffaws when he finds what he was looking for. You smile at how happy he is.
He's so happy that he grabs you by your elbow, pointing at the new ‘Ramones’ album. The words “Ramones Mania” are printed in bright red.
“Finally! Look!”
“I see it, Hobs.” You chuckle, “didn't this release months ago though?”
“It did,” he sighs like he's recalling a bad memory. “But this place isn't making a lot of money from records like this, so Mike here!” He yells the last part to annoy the man. “Delayed ordering it. I had to come ‘ere every day just to remind him.”
You see Mike pressing the volume up on his walkman. Making sure that Hobie sees that he's not listening to him.
“You didn't tell me that.” You say, sounding a bit too hurt.
“Thought you wouldn't care.” Hobie shrugs, “‘sides, you don't listen to stuff like this.” He points at the album.
“I could listen to it, Hobs. I make you listen to my records and you seem to like it.”
Hobie's eyes soften. “You wanna listen to it together then? You might not like it.”
“Yeah,” you nod. “If I don't end up liking it then at least I gave it a try, right? If I do like it we have something new to talk about.”
He could only manage a smile and a curt nod. Taking the record to the listening booth that sits at the corner of the store, he leaves his bag outside whilst he opens the door for you. Placing your bag down more gently than he did, you enter the cramped booth.
Mike yells after you two, “you lot better not snog in there!” You and Hobie scrunch your faces at the man.
“We're fourteen, mate!” Hobie yells back, not agitated, just weirded out by Mike's comment.
“You're fourteen? How would I know? You look fuckin' sixteen, bruv! Tall motherfucker.” He whispers the last part, Hobie didn't hear it but you surely did.
“I thought he was cool.” You admit, shutting the booth door behind you.
“He's a wanker, just actin’ like he is. Thought you fancy him?”
“Ew.” He beams at your reaction.
You giggle, the sound bouncing off the padded walls of the booth. It's just a regular rectangular box with a shelf for the record player and a bench to sit on. It's quieter inside, the cars outside are muffled, the only clear thing you can hear is how your heartbeat gets faster and faster the longer you stay squished inside the booth with him. Sitting down, you leave enough space for him. Hands on top of the other, you roam your eyes around the cracking paint on the walls, mind making shapes from how the navy blue paint crumbles.
Hobie carefully takes the record out then places it on the record player. Sitting next to you, you can practically feel his excitement reverberating. He takes the headphones from its rack, turning each around so you and him could listen at the same time.
“Ready to shit your trousers?” He asks, eyes glinting from the single light bulb. He's so close to you that you can see yourself in the reflection in his eyes. And you can see every single strand of eyelashes that's perfectly blending in with his eyeliner.
“I don't want to poop on my trousers, I like this pair.” You joke, and you pat yourself on the back for making him laugh. “This is corduroy, Hobie.”
“Alright quiet time now.” He presses play as you hide your amused smile.
—
You bask in the sunset, eyes closed, you let the autumn air kiss your cheeks, your hands are behind you, propping you up. Despite the dusty pavement, and the looming problem of getting found out that you skipped school, you're perfectly content where you are right now. It would be perfect but you're missing something, or someone for that matter.
Cold air suddenly blows right behind you, the convenience doors close with a hiss and that's your cue to look up. Hobie appears upside down in your vision just like you thought, he tilts his head, you can see the cogs in his head turn. Placing the cup on your forehead, he laughs at your crossed eyes. Condensation rolls off from the plastic cup and into your skin.
Hobie takes it away before you could catch a cold. Sitting next to you, he hands you your bright slurpee. There's a mix of colours, red and blue melting into the orange and purple.
“They didn't have the brown one.” He says as he rips open a pack of Doritos. “There's no puddin’ pops either.”
“Aw,” you say slightly disappointed, but the sight of the box of nerds inside the plastic bag helps remedy your disappointment. “Ooh nerds!”
“Where?” As he says it, you see a grin slowly spreading on his face. “I only see one right here!” Chortling, grin wide, the orange hues of the sky paints him with its watercolour glow. You'd take this sight more than a day alone at the arcade.
“Ha ha.” You say flatly, sipping your drink too quickly, you wince loudly. Hobie guffaws into the barren space, save for the 711 behind you and the woods sitting quietly in front of you. His laugh echoes, even with his amusement, he still has the time to pat your back affectionately.
“Ow.” You rub your temple.
“What’d I tell you before? Drink it slowly, love.” The title slips out of his tongue. The second he realizes it, he hides behind his own cup, sipping wordlessly as he stares off into the woods.
Love, the simple freudian slip has you blinking at him slowly. He has never called you that before, he has, however, called you a bunch of nicknames that are either sweet or to purposely annoy you. But love? You've only heard older teenagers call each other that, and they usually have their hand inside their girlfriend’s or boyfriend’s back pockets when they do. You have no idea if Hobie has mistaken, because you're clearly not love, you're pingu, you're cheese, you're pebbles, hell, you're even lad, or his best mate. Never love, because that's reserved for someone you actually like, someone you truly care for.
Is he mistaken? Mimicking something he has heard around school?
“I should've told you about the album.” His voice wakes you to the present.
Do you care for him? Of course you do.
“What?” You breathlessly ask.
He's your best mate after Danny left, he was the only one who filled that lonely lonely gap he left. You think he's stuck with you forever, and he thinks you're stuck with him forever. Strangely enough, you both think it's perfect.
“Me pestering the shit out of Mike.” You knit your eyebrows at his words. He looks down at his boots, a small puddle at his feet reflects his own confused face. Is he apologizing? Why is he apologizing for? Weirdly enough, you both ask the same question.
You'd annoy Mike for him. You'd call the shop endlessly just so they would order his record. Even if you get in trouble for the telephone bill.
“You would've helped.” Hobie continues, eyes now looking into your own.
Care, it's a simple word, but you think it's not enough to describe how you feel about him, how you really feel about your best friend. It's much more than that.
“Yeah, I would've annoyed him too.” You softly smile at him.
“I know, love.” Because he knows you, and you know him too. Hobie utters the title more confidently, the word rolling off his tongue like butter. He makes it sound like he has been calling you that in his head for a long time. Maybe he has. “I know you would.”
He had the answer the whole time, it's not just you caring for him. It's love, it's love in its earliest state, it's love at its most innocent.
You love him, that revelation scares you, but it's better not knowing how you truly feel whenever he smiles at you and your heart skips a beat. Now you know, you'll tell him one day, one day when that feeling gnaws at your chest. But for now, you'll settle with drinking slurpees with him, you'll settle for skipping class so you could listen to records with him. For now you'll settle with loving him as his best mate, and for now, you're content just by being at his side.

Since the Obey Me brothers are so attached to their MC and every single one of them have a animal form, why not turn into that animal and sneak out MC when they're at their school / work?
Mammon
That man has it easy, since he can turn into a crow that couldn't suppose any big danger since he can fly and more. Mammon could easily come through your classroom window one day, scaring everyone away in the process, and bring you whatever silly thing he got along the way. Did you know that crows, like parrots, can imitate human sounds? Well now you know Mammon even as a crow would speak to you.
— Look human! I found Lucifer's credit card, let's hang out after ya class / shift!
— Mammon, get the hell out of here.
The rest of the day he refuses to leave and remains either on your head or on your shoulder, occasionally asking for cuddles.
Leviathan
Now, now, Levi has things a little more complicated, since he's a snake so the only way for him to visit you in his animal form would be to travel through the water pipes to get to you, so imagine one day you minding your own business and hearing a terrified scream followed by another scream saying "A snake!"... What are the chances that a snake will enter the building? In any case, you know without proof or doubt that it's Levi.
— Don't hurt him! He's my... pet? Yes!
To avoid problems with your class / workmates, you decide to just apologize and get as far away as you can just to "scold" Levi for appearing like that out of nowhere, his answer? Get inside your clothes and spend all day with you hissing and moving when he's uncomfortable.
Satan
Yeah no, there's no way he's going to turn into a freaking unicorn, so he very wisely decides to be a cat! Of course! Very agilely he manages to follow you from home to your school / work without being discovered, he even successfully infiltrates inside the establishment! You only realize his preference when you hear many people try to call him saying "kitty!", then you turn around and as if it were a beautiful movie like reunion, Satan runs towards you and jumps on you only for you to catch him and start to purr.
— MC! I didn't know you had a cat!
— Me neither...
— What?
— What?
Satan is a micro celebrity around your class / workmates, everyone takes pictures of him and petting him... obviously failing in this, he is a surly cat that only allows and demands that you pet him and give him your full attention.
Asmodeus
Another one that wouldn't turn into his designated animal is obviously Asmo because "scorpions aren't cute enough" so what does he choose? Simple, a cute lop-eared bunny. Unlike the others, he tells you that he will go with you and gives you a nice bag to carry him in it.
— Your bunny is such a cutie! I love him.
— Sure, just... don't look at him in his eyes for too long... I don't want you to get charmed.
Unlike Satan, Asmo does enjoy the attention he receives and even, in his bunny way, asks you to change his clothes and does tricks! So all day he tries to get everyone's attention and when your teacher / supervisor tries to reprimand you for having him, he just charms them.
Beelzebub & Belphegor
Beel is a fly and Belphie is a cow and, although naturally they could be together in their animal form, I don't think it would be very convenient to take a sleepy cow and a hungry fly with you, so they are both a pair of cute ferrets. The way to get to you is by getting inside your backpack without you noticing, you discover them when you go to look for a snack to eat and you realize that there are only 2 furballs in the pocket, one sleeping and the other eating what was left of the snack.
— Awww Beel! That was my snack!
— Eek!
— Come here you both.
The rest of the day they spend in your pockets and table sleeping together or playing with each other, from time to time Beel will ask you for food nibbling your finger so get ready to spend money.
Lucifer
Lucifer doesn't care sneaking into your school work in his human form so why would he be using his animal form? ... I don't know, the planets aligned or something, besides, the only reason he would meddle in your day would be because his brothers are doing something with you that he does not particularly like. Don't be surprised if you're with one of the brothers (pets) and out of nowhere a black peacock shows up ready to attack.
— MC is that... a peacock !?
— No.... that's the devil himself.
Luci would not stay the whole day with you because he's a very busy man, but if you ask him, he could open his train (tail) to impress your class / workmates. At the end of the day, as always, he will pick you up in his human form and by car, he hates it when you go home alone.

Hi! Can I request a Zach Maclaren one shot? Him and reader are college friends. Zach invited them to go skiing with his family. But due to sudden invitation there's only one bed. Fluff (no smut pls)
One Bed
Summery: The request
Words: 1.5k
Warnings: grammar mistakes
A/N: Thank you xxx feel free to request whenever you want!
The chime of the bell above the door signals the entrance of a customer entering the coffee shop you worked at. Typically, your days were intense and you stayed alert to any new customer not to lose track but today it's slow and tranquil, so you don't feel the need to run immediately to the customer.
You're slowly cleaning the table to remove any crumbs left and the dirty cups of coffee, you thought you would leave the person to think about the order for a second but a pair of hands gripped your waist. “Boo!” A loud scream escaped your attacker's mouth in an attempt to startle you. Your heart leaped, and your body instinctively flinched. You quickly pushed away and jumped, what felt like feet away. "Zachary MacLaren, what the hell is wrong with you!" Your angry voice echoed off the walls of the shop as you yelled his full name. “Zachary?” He holds his stomach while bending over, laughing uncontrollably. “I hate you, you know that?” A small smile tugged at the corner of your lips despite you desperately trying to show your anger. “Hate me? I think you meant love” He smirked and playfully draped his arm around your shoulder. You giggled before pushing away from his embrace. “What do you want to order, Zach?” You made your way around the counter where the register was. “Nothing, I just wanted to make sure you were still coming to the ski trip” Gently, he placed his elbow on the counter and leaned down to press his chin against his hand while smiling up at you. “Of course, I'm coming, I'm not gonna miss the opportunity to see you fall on your ass” After your sentence Zach fake gasped. “I'll let you know that I'm an impeccable snowboarder. If someone falls it's gonna be you.” He starts to walk backward to the door of your workplace. “We’ll see about that Zach” “I'll come pick you up at your dorm room Friday after class alright?” You nodded before saying your goodbyes. “Wipe that smile off your face, girl,” Your boss' voice cut through the air, and you felt the heat rise to your cheeks. You hadn't realized the effect Zach had on you. You couldn't wait to spend the week with him and his family. … Friday, during class you weren't paying attention. All you could think about was your excitement for the upcoming trip a few hours later. When Zach came knocking on your dorm door as he had promised two days prior, you were already prepared. Your suitcase was filled with your essentials and you were ready to go. You both made your way to his house where the rest of his family was. He just needed to come get you and you would all be on your paths to the beautiful house next to the ski mountains. He opened the door and you were met with chaos. His mom and dad were running around with last-minute tasks and his sister was looking for snacks in the pantry for the road. There was also a boy around Avery's age sitting on the kitchen island with a BattleToad backpack. “Hey Malix, what are you doing here?” Zach asked him. “He's coming with us! isn't that awesome? Mom said I could bring a friend this year since you always bring Y/N” His younger sister answered for the boy and your cheeks flushed at her innocent comment about you. You and Zach were indeed glued to the hip, always following each other wherever you went “Since Avery is too young to sleep with a boy,” His mom interjected and his sister made a gagging sound, “I figured you and Y/n could share the second master bedroom while the kids take the separate rooms” The air in your lungs left your body as if you were hit by a train. You and Zach sharing a room? “Oh yeah that's fine” He answered casually with not one hint of hesitation in his voice. Throughout the entire ride to the chalet, you were pressed against him. His legs, much longer than yours, needed more space which made the both of you closer than ever. When you finally arrived at your destination you felt the air enter your lungs as if you hadn't taken a single breath since your departure. You along with the rest of his family entered the house, It was still just as pretty as the preceding years. It was massive and spacious. But also rustic with a touch of modern. You would kill to own a place like this one in the future "You coming?" Zach was already halfway up the circular stairs, his and your suitcase in hand. You nodded hastily and rushed to catch up with him.
He pushed open the two wooden doors revealing the bedroom you would both sleep in tonight and the rest of the week.
The room was spectacular, the queen-sized bed was filled with cozy pillows and soft blankets, and there was a fireplace in front of it as well as a TV, The big windows allowed the sun to shine brightly and make the room warmer.
“Are you sure this isn't your parent's room?” you asked with your voice a little bit trembly, you felt nervous, happy, shy?
“Oh, I'm sure” His lips turned into a big grin and he unexpectedly dropped your bags and ran into the bed. He jumped and landed with a loud “Oof” before snuggling inside the blankets.
“This is so much better than the crappy single beds!” he laughed. “Come on!” He motioned you to copy his previous actions and you couldn't help yourself. You ran and landed beside him, making you both giggle.
“Zach let's go skiing!” Avery barged into the room and yelled excitedly.
“Now? We just got here” he sat up prompting himself on his elbows.
“Pleasee I really want to show the mountains to Malix” She begged her brother.
“Alright” he agreed and she screamed in victory rushing downstairs to announce the news to her friend.
“Do you want to come with us?” He asks as he stands up from the criminally comfy bed.
"Of course," you nodded. In a swift motion, he grabbed your hand, pulling you up from the bed. You stumbled, landing face to face, chest to chest with him. For a moment, you both locked eyes before quickly jumping apart.
"Sorry," he chuckled nervously. All you could do was tuck a strand of hair behind your ear and dismiss him with a shy smile.
After a long evening snowboarding, you all returned home to find a warm meal prepared by his parents. The dinner was lively, filled with discussion and laughter.
And later that night, you cozied up in bed, content and warm.
“Hey, I made us some hot cocoa” You accepted the mug he handed you with a “thank you”, and took a sip. The chocolate taste was heavenly on your tongue.
You and Zach chose a movie on Netflix and watched it until you were both tired. You turned off the lights, extinguished the fire, and lay down together. You were facing his back and as if he read your mind he turned to face you. Even in the dark, you could see him looking at you.
“I'm sorry about earlier, I didn't want to make you uncomfortable.” He said calmly which made you shake your head disapprovingly.
“You didn't make me uncomfortable, Zach just nervous…”
“I'm so sorry I didn't mean to, really I just wanted to help you get up. I should have been more soft instead of pulling you like that, It was dumb of me-” he rambled and you cut him off.
“Not nervous in a bad way” you sighed desperately.
“No?” he asked confused.
"I… I like you, and I like being close to you, but it makes me a little nervous," you admitted, your voice trembling. When you were met with silence embarrassment flooded over you like a wave. Quickly, you hid beneath the blankets, wishing you could disappear from the face of the earth.
“Hey” His hands searched for your face in the blankets but failed.”Come back”
You slowly pulled the blanket away from your face, meeting his eyes once again. His warm hand gently rested on your cheek, offering a comforting touch.
“I thought you would never say it” Confusion filled you.
"Wait, what?" you asked, expecting an answer. Instead, his response was his lips pressing gently against yours.
As confused as you were, you kissed him back, which only made him press deeper. His hand slid to the back of your neck, taking your breath away.
His soft lips detached from yours and you took a small breath.
"I knew you liked me," he said, a cocky yet happy smile gracing his lips.
“What-!” His lips once again connected with yours to shush you.
“I like you too though” His smile grew against your lips and your heart grew in size. Turns out sharing a bed was the best thing that could happen to you and Zach.

Drugssss
Warnings: Mentions of drugs, bad police, swearing
Summary: Swear to God, the drugs in your bag, they're not yours.
A/N: This was written very suddenly, plot very random but it is here! Hope you guys enjoy this a lot, my exams have finished for the mean time so I'll try writing more. This title also makes no sense but i have no more creative juices left in me. By the end of this, it gets very cringe and ew so pretend it doesn't exist pls😭
It had been a long day and all you wanted to do was go to the firehouse and sleep in Kelly's bunk, maybe even have a snack depending on who cooked.
But alas, somehow, at the end of the school day, you found yourself in the back of a police car in handcuffs, being driven to the police station.
For the past few months, any drug dealing and drug intake had increased in your school to such a point that all of a sudden this morning, police were at the school doors searching everyone as they entered, looked for any sort of suspicious activity during the day and do a final search as you all left.
For you, the entire day had gone smoothly till about 15 minutes ago when they were searching your bag. You were more than one hundred percent confident you were safe. One because you'd never come across drugs in the seventeen years of your life, two because you live with firefighters and most importantly, your older brother was a lieutenant. Drugs were an easy death sentence.
The Ziploc bags they found in your backpack, they caught you so off guard you thought you were hallucinating but then they asked you to walk them to your locker and they wouldn't take no for an answer.
When you didn't move immediately, they started pushing you, one hand on your back and one on your bicep. You were so shocked that their tight grips went unnoticed.
Opening your locker to them, you didn't need to look, you could feel their eyes burning into your head.
Fast forward to now and you were being dragged inside the station like an uncooperating toddler having a tantrum. You had your own two feet and hadn't fought them once. Why were they being so harsh with you?
You hadn't even realised the exact location till you were stood in front of a desk and the policeman with a tight grasp of your arm had said a name you recognised.
"Trudy!"
The Sargent did a double take, looking at your bewildered as she looked past the officer as if he wasn't even there.
"Junior." She said affectionately, calling you the name everyone had dubbed for you basically since birth. Your name was only ever uttered when in trouble or when anyone, mainly you were distressed.
"Officer." Trudy sternly addressed the man, voice firm with her face set in stone. "Care to explain why you have my niece in cuffs?"
The second officer stepped up from behind you, shaking the clear evidence bag in her eye line.
"Burgess!" Trudy called for the brunette officer who was making her way up the stairs. "Take Y/N off their hands please. I need to call Severide."
Kim's eyes widened in shock when she saw you. Without any further question, she came down and gently steered you towards the intelligence bullpen.
"It's alright Y/N, we'll get this all sorted, don't worry."
Her words alone comforted you, her kind hands so gentle you felt imminent relief.
*****
You didn't even need to see Kelly to know he was there. You could hear his raised voice laced in anger, tinged with worry and concern for his baby sister.
His boots running up the stairs followed and soon enough, all your senses were being flooded by him.
"Thank goodness your okay." He sighed, kneeling in front of you so he could inspect you properly. "Oh God Y/N, are you hurt? Are you-" He cut himself off when your bottom lip trembled.
"Oh Y/N." Opening his arms, you easily fell into his welcoming embrace. Such a bug bringing you comfort and safety the same way your entire life.
"I'm here now." He said, face resting in your hair as he spoke to only you. He pressed a light but assuring kiss when he heard the tell-tale signs that you were about to start crying. "I'm going to fix this, I promise Y/N."
"They're not mine." You mumbled into his shirt collar, squeezing your eyes shut as to prevent any tears from spilling over. "You have to believe me Kels- I would never-"
"I know, I know." He shushed you, rubbing his hands over your bare arms, his motions stopping when he noticed how red your bicep was with specifically shaped indentations.
"What the fuck?!" He gently inspected your arms, making you pull back in confusion, your own eyes widening at the red hand marks and nails indents.
"It doesn't hurt-"
"That doesn't fucking matter." Oh- He was more than angry now. Livid didn't do him justice. When Kelly got angry he got loud and even violent but right now, he was silent, unmoving in his fury.
You were too scared to ask what he was going to do next.
"Hey Junior how- oh shit." Matt swore, smile disappearing as soon as he stepped into the breakroom and caught sight of your arm in Kelly's hand.
"Shit indeed." Adam added, appearing out of nowhere spooking all three of you.
Whipping your heads up to look at the officer, he smiled and apologised sheepishly. He held up a key in his hand, "Let's finally get your hands of these cuffs."
Despite your previous teary eyes, your mood improved at his words as you pushed your wrists in his direction eager to get your hands free.
Kelly grumbled at the sight of your red and raw wrists, a definite sign that they had been put on too tight.
"So, we've made some progress."
*****
Witnessing Matt trying to calm Kelly down, holding his elbow so he didn't do anything stupid would've been hilarious if your wrists weren't so sore, but the sight did ease the pain somewhat.
The two men had been glaring at the stupid teenage boys who didn't even have the decency to look chastised or shameful or anything of the sorts when they were caught and taken in by intelligence.
As it turns out, it was as easy and simple as checking the school security cameras to find out who planted the drugs in your locker and bags.
Apparently, you weren't their only target.
Trudy had forced the two officers to apologise to you which they did very begrudgingly which she wasn't very happy about. You glared at them, rolled your eyes at the insincere apology and outright said 'i don't accept your half-assed apology'.
Kelly would let you off for swearing on just this once occasion. This was the only exception because they gully deserved it.
"You won't be seeing these idiots for a while." You weren't too sure who Trudy was referring to, the policemen or the criminal teenage boys because she walked off before any of you could ask for clarification.
"You want to get milkshakes?" Kelly nudged your shoulder gently, a soft smile on your face when your eyes brightened up just like they did when you were younger whenever someone mentioned said sweet treat.
It was safe to say that with the people around you, no one would mess with you like that again.

Bradley was sitting out on his tiny balcony, about to crack open a beer when Molly called him. She had been sending him pictures for the past hour of the two of you at some wine event, and you were both definitely looking a bit tipsy.
"Hey, Molly. You two having fun?"
"Bradley!" It was you. And he could tell immediately that something had you upset.
"Kitten? What's wrong?"
The sound of you sobbing softly met his ear, and he was out of his chair and heading inside immediately. "I need your help."
"What do you need, baby?" he asked, trying to keep his voice calm, but now he was worried. He could hear Molly talking calmly in the background while he waited for you to respond.
"I hate to ask you to do this, but Molly and I are kind of drunk. Can you go pick Everett up for me?"
Bradley was grabbing his shoes and tying the laces before the full sentence was out of your mouth. "From Danny's?" he asked, and he had such a bad feeling. It was still a couple hours before you and Molly were supposed to even be back in the city, but you sounded distraught.
"Yeah," you said softly. "He's at Danny's."
"I'll go get him now," he said, grabbing his key ring and spotting your house key there. "Text me his address."
"Oh my god, thank you so much," you gushed. "I'll owe you dinner-"
"Baby," he said, propping his phone between his ear and his shoulder. "You don't owe me anything. I'm happy to do it."
But you still whispered a soft, "Thank you."
"Do you want me to bring him back to my apartment? Or take him to your house?"
"Either one," you replied. "I'll try to reach Danny and let him know you're going to pick Ev up."
"Sounds good," Bradley replied, and you ended the call as he was starting the Bronco. And then he began to feel like everything wasn't adding up. You wanted him to pick Everett up, but Danny didn't know about it?
You texted the address, and he entered it into his GPS without giving it much more thought. If you wanted him to pick up Everett, he would do it. His eyes settled on the booster seat in the back as he pulled out of his parking space, and he got on the highway to Mission Beach.
Danny lived on a very nice street which surprised Bradley, because you had told him Everett's dad claimed he couldn't afford to pay any child support. "Fucking asshole," he muttered, putting the Bronco in park outside of the address you had sent to him. At least he probably wouldn't have to chat with Danny too much. He could just get Everett and get out.
Bradley adjusted his backward Phillies cap and squared his shoulders before he knocked on the door. And to his surprise, Everett threw the door wide open a second later, looking thoroughly upset.
"Coach!" And then Everett had his arms wrapped around Bradley's waist, and he was immediately hit with the smell of marijuana. Bradley wrapped a protective arm around Everett and rubbed his back. "Can you take me home?"
"Yeah," Bradley grunted, pushing the door open all the way and looking inside. "Where's your dad, Kiddo?" he managed to ask in a very calm voice, when really he just wanted to rip the door off the hinges.
"In his room with Tori. I tried to knock, but they didn't hear me."
Bradley saw an ipad on the couch next to Everett's baseball backpack and some snack bags. "Okay. Yeah. Go grab your stuff and I'll take you home." His blood was boiling as he watched Everett swipe everything off the couch and into the bag and come running back over. Bradley took his small hand and closed the door quietly.
Then he led Everett out to the Bronco without a word between them. Bradley knew as soon as he spoke, he was going to blow up. So he helped Everett get into the Bronco and get buckled in. And then he rolled the window down a few inches as he whispered calmly, "You stay here for just a minute, okay?" Everett nodded at him, eyes wide. This child wasn't stupid, he knew something was going on, and Bradley didn't want to upset him further.
"Okay," Everett whispered. Bradley kissed the top of his head and locked him inside the Bronco. He would make this quick.
Bradley's breaths were coming short and shallow as he could feel the rage flowing through his body. Either you didn't know Danny was smoking with Everett there, or for some reason you didn't mention it. Maybe you suspected something, or maybe Everett had called you on his own. Regardless, you were away and drunk, and you had trusted Bradley to take care of this situation for you. He honestly loved that you asked him for help; he would do anything for Everett.
But there was no way he could leave without taking care of the rest of this for you whether you asked him to or not. He glanced back at Everett sitting in the car, and then he made a fist and pounded on the door until Danny started calling out, "Hang on!"
Bradley kept his hand in that tight fist as the door opened to reveal Danny who was very clearly stoned and standing next to a young woman in a tee shirt and underwear. "What the fuck do you want?" Danny asked, looking at Bradley closely for a few seconds. "Wait. Are you that tee ball coach?"
"Where's your son?" Bradley asked, clenching his right hand tighter, practically shaking with the urge to level your ex husband. "Where's Everett?" Bradley asked, trying so hard to keep his voice calm, but he could see Danny flinch.
"Huh?" he asked, turning around and looking at the living room and kitchen.
"Come on, Danny. Where is he? Are you so stoned you can't figure it out?" Bradley asked, his volume rising with each word. He watched the woman reach out for Danny who was looking very confused now.
"He's here somewhere," Danny muttered, clearly more interested in sex and weed than his own kid. Bradley stepped inside the house and shoved him.
"He's not here, asshole. He's in my fucking car!"
"Get the fuck out of my house," Danny said, staggering backwards as Bradley shoved him again.
"I took your kid from your house without any issue, which you'd know if you were fucking paying attention to him instead of using drugs! In front of a six year old!" Bradley had him by the shirt collar now.
"Do you want me to have you arrested for kidnapping?" Danny sputtered, and Bradley laughed right in his face.
"You want to call the police? Go ahead. Please do. I have permission from his mom to pick him up here. Do you have permission from his mom to smoke pot around him? You're house fucking reeks."
The woman took a step away and said, "I'll call the police."
"No! Tori, do not call the police!" Danny yelled at her as Bradley shook him until Danny met his eyes.
"Let her call," he said, much calmer now. "I'm sure they'd love to know all about this." He shoved Danny back against the wall and let go of his shirt.
"Get the fuck out of my house," Danny said more forecefully, but his eyes were still glassy and unfocused.
"No," Bradley replied, glancing back out to make sure Everett was okay. "I'm not done yet, you piece of shit."
"Well then finish up and leave," Danny managed through clenched teeth, and Bradley thought he'd never seen someone so cowardly in his life.
Bradley jabbed his index finger into Danny's chest until he knew it would bruise. "You don't deserve that kid, and you never did. And you better give his mom whatever she asks for, because she has been picking up your slack for years, you worthless motherfucker."
With one more glance around the house, Bradley stormed out and headed down the sidewalk back to Everett. He heard the front door slam behind him, and he had to roll his shoulders and count slowly to ten to get control of himself. He swallowed hard before he unlocked the driver's door and let himself inside the stuffy Bronco. He turned around and smiled at Everett who still looked confused and scared.
"You hungry, Kiddo? It's almost dinner time." Everett nodded silently. "How about a Happy Meal?"
"Okay. Chicken nuggets, please," he said, and Bradley was relieved he was talking again.
"You truly are a kid after my own heart," Bradley told him as he started the engine. He quickly texted both you and Molly and let you know he had Everett and that he'd take him to your house after stopping at McDonald's.
"Hey, Coach?" Everett asked softly as Bradley pulled away from the curb.
"Yeah, Kiddo?"
After a beat of silence he said, "Will you tell my mom I don't want to go back to my dad's house anymore?"
Bradley could feel tears burning the backs of his eyes. Danny had the opportunity to be a dad, but he didn't want it. But as far as Carole had ever told Bradley, Nick had been so happy to be a father, it made it that much harder for them to lose him when Bradley was young. Some things were so unfair, Bradley couldn't properly put them into words. But you had to know by this point that you couldn't force Danny to do something he didn't want to do. He just didn't want to love Everett. The most lovable kid.
"Yeah," Bradley said, his voice sounding raspy to his own ears. "I'll talk to your mom later, okay? Let's go get some chicken nuggets."
--------------------------
Molly made you walk around the vineyard for a full hour before she would let either of you near your car. And then she insisted on being the one to drive back to the city.
Bradley had texted you to let you know that he had Everett with him, and that they would be waiting at your house. But now you were sitting in a silent car with Molly while she gripped the steering wheel. There was so much traffic, it would probably be an extra hour before you got home.
Eventually, as you wiped more tears from your eyes, Molly asked, "Do you think he was smoking weed around Ev?"
"I don't know," you whispered. "I'm too afraid to ask Bradley what happened. I think I just need to hear everything all at once instead of texting him for bits of information."
"Makes sense," she replied. "But I swear, I'll happily kill Danny with my bare hands. You just say the word, okay?"
You nodded silently, and looked at your phone for the hundredth time. Bradley had texted you a picture of him and Everett eating Happy Meals at your kitchen island an hour ago.
Bradley Bradshaw: We are bummed we got duplicate toys. But we are just fine. See you when you get here.
They seemed happy enough in the photo, so you kept looking at it while Molly tried to navigate through all the traffic. "Come on," she groaned, honking at someone who tried to cut her off. "What the fuck."
When she finally pulled into your driveway next to the Bronco, it was getting pretty dark, and you were out of the car before she had even parked. You ran up to the front door and jammed your key in the lock, shouldering the door open.
But what you saw had you frozen in place, like the wind had been knocked out of you. You could hear Molly coming up the porch steps, so you signalled for her to be quiet. Then you stepped fully into your living room which Everett and Bradley had turned into a gigantic pillow and blanket fort.
The TV was on, softly playing the end credits of Toy Story, and you had to cover your mouth with your hand to keep from laughing or crying. Because the two of them were sound asleep amongst the pillows on the floor underneath one of your fleece blankets that was stretched from the couch and over the coffee table like a tent. Bradley was laying on his back with Everett curled up against his right side, and you thought you were going to melt into a puddle.
"Oh my god," Molly whispered, closing your front door softly and coming to stand next to you. "You need to marry him."
You had to stifle your laugh as tears filled your eyes. Bradley had taken care of everything. Sure, it was going to take you an hour to clean up this elaborate fort, but you didn't care at all. As you set your bag down and took your shoes off, Molly peeked out the front window.
"Bob is going to pick me up so you can have a conversation with Bradley," she whispered. "Will you call me later tonight? Any time is fine."
You nodded and wrapped your arms around her, holding her tight as a few more tears fell. "Thank you for driving and for everything, Molly. I love you."
She kissed your cheek as you heard Bob's truck pull up outside. "Call me."
And then she was gone, and you were crawling inside the blanket tent and curling up against Bradley's left side. When you pressed your lips to his cheek, he started to stir.
"Kitten," he whispered in his sleepy voice, pulling you closer as Everett continued to doze. He squeezed your hip with his big hand and kissed you softly. "You okay?"
You nodded and rested your head on his shoulder. "I'm okay now."
--------------------------
When Everett woke up to find that you were home as well, laying on Bradley's other side with your fingers stroking his mustache and scruffy cheeks, he scrambled over Bradley and into your arms.
"Mommy!"
Bradley crawled out from under the blanket fort and stretched while you held Everett and kissed him. He turned off the TV and started to clean up the wrappers from the Happy Meals as well as some of the pillows. This way he could give you some time to talk quietly with Ev. But because he wasn't sure if he should stay or leave, he lingered a bit since it was close to Everett's bedtime now.
When you and Everett finally crawled out from under the tent, Bradley's arms were full of both of you. "Thank you." Your words weren't necessary, and you'd already thanked him so many times, but Bradley thought perhaps you needed to say them again. And now he was dreading telling you what happened at Danny's
"Will you carry me up to bed?" Everett asked, looking up at Bradley. He finally seemed like the relaxed, happy child he usually did.
"Of course," Bradley replied, scooping him up and carrying him upstairs. In no time, he was snuggled up in bed holding the plush Phanatic in both arms. And Bradley's heart was aching.
"Baby, we need to talk," he told you as you led him out of Everett's bedroom.
You nodded with a look of agony on your face. "I know." You walked ahead of Bradley and went to your bed, holding the covers up for him to crawl in with you. You swallowed hard as he wrapped his arm around you so that you and he were laying face to face. "I know you won't always be able to help out like you did today."
Bradley's brow scrunched up, and he pursed his lips. "What do you mean? Of course I will."
You sighed and looked at him. "I just mean, even if we're together, you could be deployed or something."
"Kitten, I'm not going anywhere. And if I'm deployed, baby, you still have Molly and Bob. Hell, you could have called Nat for help today, too. She would have probably beat the living shit out of Danny, but she would have brought Everett home safe and sound."
You closed your eyes and pressed your face into his chest as you asked, "What happened when you got to his house?"
Bradley sighed and rubbed your back, trying to decide just how much detail to give you. The last thing he wanted was for you to feel any worse than you already clearly did.
"Just tell me, Bradley," you gasped, gripping his shirt. But when he still hesitated, you said, "Just tell me everything."
"I knocked on the door, and Everett answered," he said softly, still rubbing small circles along your back through your shirt. "Danny was nowhere in sight, and I took Everett right outside and got him buckled into his booster seat."
You pulled away from him and stared off into space. "You...took him right out? And Danny had no idea? Why wasn't he with Everett?!"
Bradley shook his head and kissed your forehead five times before he said, "Danny was high, Kitten. He had been smoking, and the whole house smelled."
You started sobbing against his chest. "That's what I was afraid of after Everett called and told me it smelled weird. But I was trying to hope that I was wrong about it." You were quiet for a minute. "Was there a woman there?"
"Yeah," Bradley whispered. "She was high, too. After I got Ev safely locked up in the Bronco, I went back up and pounded on the door until they answered. I thought for a second that I was going to lose it and knock him the fuck out. Honestly, the only reason I didn't was because Everett was ready to leave."
You were crying in earnest now as you pushed Bradley fully onto his back. When you sat up on your knees and swiped at your tears, you said, "I don't even know why I'm crying. I am not sad, I'm furious! And now I have to go over there and talk to Danny about this!"
Bradley watched as every emotion flitted across your face, and then he sat up to give you a kiss. "Everett doesn't want to go back to Danny's house anymore. He begged me to tell you that."
You nodded and cradled your forehead in your hands. "Okay. Now I am sad."
He let you have a few minutes to process everything before saying, "If you want me to stay tonight, I'll stay. But if you want me to go so you can have some space, just say the word, and I'll lock up when I go."
"I need to call Molly. And I think I need to be alone," you whispered. But before Bradley went back to his apartment, he held you until you promised him you were feeling better.
----------------------------------
When Bradley only received a few texts from you on Monday, he was beginning to feel apprehensive. But when Molly pulled into the parking lot with Everett for tee ball practice, Bradley knew something was wrong. Because he expected that you would have told him you'd be missing practice.
"Everything okay?" he asked Molly as Everett ran over to him.
She just shrugged and handed the gear bag to Bradley when he reached for it. "I'm not sure."
He gave her an appraising look. "Where is she?" But he didn't need to ask, because he already knew. And now he was getting pissed that you hadn't told him before going over there.
"Danny's," she whispered, and Bradley started texting you right away. He would have preferred to go with you. "I told her I would take Everett home for a sleepover if she needed me to."
And then Bradley understood that you weren't expecting a positive outcome from your encounter with your ex. Fuck. He had an hour long tee ball practice to get through before he could even get over to your house to see if you needed anything.
His patience was already short when he knelt to help Everett with his cleats before sending him out to Bob. And that's when Sandra opened her mouth. "I can't help but notice that she's not here. I think it's her turn to bring snacks."
Bradley met her eyes and watched her cheeks turn scarlet as she snapped her mouth shut. He could only imagine what he must look like right now.
"I have the snacks and juice boxes in my car, so really there's no need to comment on anything," Molly said sweetly. "But if you do feel the need to comment further, my car is that blue Honda, and I'd be happy to meet you there after practice is over. Just keep in mind that I'm in a raging bad mood today, and I'm nowhere as nice as my sister."
"Having been on the receiving end of your rage, I can vouch for that," Bradley muttered to Molly, making her chuckle. "Hey, after practice I'm just going to head right to her house."
Molly nodded. "That's probably a good idea. I'll distract Everett this evening, but she's going to need someone to vent to, I think."
As soon as practice was over, Bradley contemplated picking up dinner, but he decided getting to you was more important. And when he let himself inside your house, he was so damn thankful he hadn't stopped anywhere on his way.
----------------------------
You hadn't even knocked on Danny's door yet, but you just knew you were about to feel his wrath. Instead of contacting him first, you simply left work and headed to Mission Beach, hoping to blindside him.
When Danny opened his front door, he just shook his head at you. "I don't have time for this right now."
"Yes, you do," you replied, feeling your anger fill you up.
"I'm in the middle of something," he replied, starting to shut the door. But you wedged your body in before he could close it completely. "So you're just going to barge in then? Like your boyfriend?"
"I guess so," you growled, slamming the door closed once you were inside.
"What do you want?" he asked blandly.
Rage. That was the only thing you could feel now. "I want you to tell me what your problem is! Smoking pot while you're supposed to be watching Everett? Really?"
He got right in your face, and you staggered back against the front door. "You are the one with the fucking problem, okay? I told you I didn't want him here yesterday, but you insisted."
You pushed yourself away from the door so your chest was bumping his. He was bigger than you, but you weren't going to back down. "I gave you two options, Danny. So I guess you'll be taking the paying child support route then?"
When he clenched his fist at his side, you felt your tummy dip in fear. "We have been over this. I don't have the income for that right now."
"You have money for weed," you growled. "Why don't you give me that cash and call it a day?"
"You don't understand!" he yelled. "You never understood, and that's why we aren't married anymore."
You swallowed hard. "We're not married anymore because I left with Everett. Because we deserved better. And being on our own was a much better option than being with you. But he's still your kid! So I'm going to call my lawyer."
His eyes flashed. "You're getting a lawyer involved? I don't have money for that."
"Then what do you suggest I do, Danny?" you asked, your tone patronizing now. You knew it wasn't a good idea to goad him on, but you couldn't help yourself. "Get a time machine and convince my past self not to let you fuck me? That's what you expect me to do?"
"No!" he hollered. "I expect you to leave me the hell alone! You and Everett both! So whatever needs to be done to make that happen, that's what we are going to do!"
You were shaking now as his words sunk in. The bile started to rise up in your stomach, but you couldn't move. Your teeth started to chatter. "I can understand your anger with me," you whispered. "But you don't want him around at all?"
"No!"
And with that one final word, you felt your stomach clench painfully. "And you're going to refuse to pay child support?"
"Yes! I don't want to have to deal with any of this!"
You sucked in a few breaths before you could speak again. "You want to sign away custody? Never spend time with your kid again?" You had to wipe your eyes to be able to see clearly.
"Yes! Use your fucking lawyer to make that happen, okay?" he barked at you, face red with anger. "I don't want you around, and I don't want him. Now, how about you get out of my house?"
Your breath was coming in short gasps and you thought you might faint. But when you didn't move fast enough for his liking, Danny physically turned you and opened the door before trying to push you outside with his hand on the back of your neck.
"I'm not going to give you another chance with Everett after this," you said, tears dripping from your eyes as you spun around to face him. But your necklace chain was caught in his fingers, and he snapped it as he pushed you again. You caught the chain and the charm in your hand before they could drop, and you looked up at him.
"Get out," he barked. "And don't come back until you have something for me to sign."
You squeezed your paw print charm in your hand as you ran out to your car, nearly tripping in your high heels, and started the engine. The interior echoed with your broken sobs as you made the first turn toward your house.
Danny didn't want Everett. As hard as you tried to process things, the words just stayed at surface level, because they didn't make sense. You couldn't accept them as the truth. That was Everett's dad, and dads were supposed to want their kids around. Dads were supposed to love their children. You and Molly had been raised by older parents who loved you both, and you didn't get enough time with either of them.
But that wasn't the case with Danny at all. Danny didn't want Everett. He just couldn't be bothered. He really was that selfish.
What was wrong with you that you kept trying for so long? Did you really think he was going to change his mind? You left him for a reason. But you always thought that you were the problem, because how could anyone not want Everett?
When you looked up, you were parked in your driveway. You didn't remember driving home. You walked inside to your empty house and took off your work shoes, still clutching your necklace as you walked upstairs to your bathroom.
Danny didn't want Everett.
You threw up in the toilet and then sat down hard on the floor. You must have done something wrong, because that was the only explanation for this. You pushed too hard, or you didn't push hard enough. Danny had wanted you to get an abortion, but you thought you were in love. You dreamed of having the perfect family, and you thought he would eventually change his mind. But he didn't. He never did. Danny didn't want Everett.
You curled up on the bathroom floor and gripped the tub mat to your chest, still clutching your necklace, and you let yourself cry. It was all your fault. Everything was your fault. And now you were going to have to call your lawyer and explain out loud to another person that your ex husband didn't want your son. Danny didn't want Everett. As if there was some reason that your son didn't deserve to be loved. As if your six year old child had done something egregious or unforgivable. But all he had ever done was make you happy and give you purpose. How could someone not want him around?
"Oh god," you gasped as your tears rolled down your cheeks and onto the floor. At least Molly would take care of Everett for the night, because you wouldn't be able to look him in the eye right now. It would be a while before you could process all of this. "Why?" you sobbed, unable to catch your breath. You rolled onto your back and draped your arm over your eyes, but the pain in your chest just grew worse and worse, and you started gagging on your tears.
You couldn't catch your breath, and you couldn't hear anything past the wretched sobs filling the small room. Until you saw movement out of the corner of your watery eyes.
"Oh, Kitten. I'm here." And then you felt him lay down next to you and collect you into his arms as you sobbed harder.

Yes, Coach! Stepping up and taking care of things, but putting Ev first! I feel terrible for Kitten. She really can't understand Danny. Thanks to @beyondthesefourwalls and @mak-32!
