Rise of Shadows: Shiny Reveals
Slowing running out of adjectives, somehow. Maybe the alphabetical title gimmicks work better
Magic Trick is a one mana Discover card. But it only Discovers low cost spells. How exciting! There does seem to be a bit of a theme in Rise of Shadows where Mage is getting cheap cards that generate other cards. If you can find a way to leverage this, you might be able to pull off some cool tricks.
Vendetta is one of those weird cards that sometimes happens, and no one really trusts it. Four damage for zero mana is good, and in Rogue it acts as a super useful Combo activator as well. Turning on the discount isn’t even hard, since Rogue has a bunch of ways to get off-class cards. And if you’re playing a dedicated burgle deck, Vendetta looks like an obvious auto-include.
Eager Underling is another card for the Sacrifice Warlock pile. Effect wise, it’s a slower Funglemancer, which probably makes it a lot weaker. Unless you munch this minion for its effect immediately, your opponent can perform trades that stop you from getting the value from the Deathrattle. This is a problem with a lot of Deathrattle buff cards, an Eager Underling doesn’t have much to make seem like it can get around that. Even with other sacrifice cards to quickly munch it, this seems a little to slow for the types of decks that would benefit from it.
Plot Twist is a card that was probably inevitable. In was never a card I’d envisioned Warlock having, but here it is, as a Warlock card. In theory, you can use this as a panic button to dig for whatever you might need, but the real value here is with stupid combos. Both Dollmaster Dorian and Fel Lord Betrug benefit from being able to draw lots of cards at once, and Warlock is the ideal class for Plot Twist to draw lots of cards. You can also combine this with Augmented Elekk for extra card funtimes, and even pretend like you’re plaiying with Dead Man’s Hand if you reshuffle another Plot Twist. Overall, this is certainly an interesting card, which might be actually playable.
Crystalsong Portal is one of these new-fangled “keep all three“ Discover cards. Since the condition requires not having minions, people are already thinking of new weird deck types like “Spell Druid“. To me this seems more like a late-game refill card to play when you’ve run out of minions. Not really sure how great this will be either way, but three random Druid minions probably will include something useful.
Nine Lives is another long-term value card for Hunter, but in a sensible way. This card has a lot of build-around potential, since if you keep to high-impact Deathrattles, you can get a lot of value for three mana. Plus, getting back strong Deathrattle minions is always good. The main issue here is that early on, Nine Lives is going to be a dead card, since you won’t have any Deathrattle minions to grab. Hunter is a class that can’t really afford to hold onto cards that don’t do much, so that could be a considerable weakness for an otherwise potent card.
Off topic adjectives: Coming Soon!

Dollmaster Dorian! Another legendary I wasn't all that high on, not as bad as the Gunspire, but I'll take it and try to make a deathrattle deck around him, I think? #Hearthstone #packopening

PAX East 2018: Hearthstone: The Witchwood with Ben Brode of Blizzard
Shacknews is at PAX East throughout the weekend and with Hearthstone set to release the Witchwood expansion next week, this felt like a good time to catch up with the folks at Blizzard's Team 5. But PAX East didn't just bring out the people behind Hearthstone, it brought out the man himself, Game Director Ben Brode.
youtube
The interview covers various corners of The Witchwood, including the lore surrounding the new Hearthstone expansion, some of the ideas behind the card designs, Team 5's approach to certain card designs, and more. We also made sure to ask about the idea behind Dollmaster Dorian. But we also couldn't let this opportunity pass without asking about the Cubelock and whether a big piece of it (the Carnivorous Cube) will be brought back down to earth in the near future.
"Cube is very good," Brode told our own Greg Burke. "It's strong and I think it's maybe going to be continually strong, maybe too strong. We might have to nerf it. But we're about to enter a big period of change for Hearthstone. A lot of cards are leaving, a lot of new cards are coming in, players haven't seen all the cards yet, I don't know if that's going to be enough of a change. We'll have to see, but we're certainly open to a nerf. It depends, because this is a tough deck to pilot. We look at the statistics for players who have won less than 50 games and their statistics are not good, right? The players who have played more than 50 games of this deck, their winrate starts getting better. It's a very skill-testing deck with a lot of nuance to it. That's pretty good to have in Hearthstone, to have skill-testing decks that are hard to pilot. I like the general idea of the deck, but we obviously don't want it to be too overpowered. It's not the best deck right now and when we nerf stuff that's not the best deck, that's sometimes worrisome, because the best deck could get even better. So it's something we've got to look out for. I'm not saying 'No, we won't nerf it,' but I do think we want to wait and see what the new deck brings."
As for what Brode's favorite new card of the set is, according to the Hearthstone Game Director, we have yet to see it.
"There's a Shaman card coming in that players are going to lose their minds about."

Disguised Toast - LEGENDARY CARD REVEAL: DOLLMASTER DORIAN | THE WITCHWOOD | HEARTHSTONE | DISGUISED TOAST

I love the design of Splitting Festeroot, a neutral epic 8 mana minion. It's only a 4/4 which is a big tempo problem for a 8-cost minion but when it dies, it summons two 2/2s, which in turn split into two 1/1s. So, altogether it's 12/12 in stats which looks great value, however, that value is split over several turns and diminishes in real value each turn as the minions become less threatening and more susceptible to AoE spells. But it does have some applications, certainly in token decks where you need to keep board presence for that big buff turn (Bloodlust etc.) It also has the annoyance factor, especially with Coffin Crasher, or ways of triggering the deathrattle early like Spiritsinger Umbra and Carnivorous Cube. Also, copied by Ixlid or as a 1/1 with Sonya Shadowdancer or Dollmaster Dorian this has great potential. Good for Deathrattle Quest Priest too. Fun and maybe usable card! #hearthstone #witchwood #cardreviews

Hearthstone: The Witchwood Card Analyses (Part 6)
Blizzard is kicking off card reveals for Hearthstone's next expansion. The Witchwood will introduce 135 new cards, using new Echo and Rush mechanics and also introducing a Monster Hunt single-player mode. The Witchwood marks Hearthstone's eighth expansion and the first one for the Year of the Raven.
As is tradition, Shacknews is stepping into the murky forest to break these cards down by the handful. We continue by looking at the first of the cards revealed by various outlets, including YouTube content creators, Twitch streamers, and news sites.
Need a recap? Here's what you may have missed:

(2) Rat Trap Type: Spell Class: Hunter Rarity: Epic Secret: After your opponent plays three cards in a turn, summon a 6/6 Rat. Source: IGN Brazil
Analysis: One sad thing for Standard players is that Cat Trick is about to rotate out into Wild. But while the cat's away, the rat will play.
The Rat Trap is designed for the opponent that loves to play multiple cards in a single turn. That goes for multiple deck types, but the key to success here is going to be timing. It's almost sure to go off against classes holding multiple cards or classes with cheap spells and card draw options, like our good friend Miracle Rogue. It has a place in constructed, just because a 6/6 Rat can either swing the game or halt the opponent's push and force them to deal with it immediately.
This is practically a dud in Arena, though. When resources start to run low in the late game, it's hard to imagine the opponent playing enough cards to trigger this Secret, making it something of a dead play.
(5) Holy Water Type: Spell Class: Priest Rarity: Rare Deal 4 damage to a minion. If that kills it, add a copy of it to your hand. Source: Kripparrian on YouTube
Analysis: The rich get richer, when it comes to Priest. This is a wildly powerful spell that gives Priest players another means to help themselves to some of their opponent's minions.
What makes Holy Water particularly powerful is that so many minions over the past several expansions have various Deathrattle and Battlecry effects that can swing entire games. Using this as a finishing blow can put one of those potential game-swinging minions in the Priest player's hands, while also working to remove the board.
The best part is, it doesn't even have to be an enemy minion. Perhaps you have an Obsidian Statue near death. Simply douse it with Holy Water to kill it, eliminate an opposing minion with its Deathrattle, and get a fresh one in your hand. It's another powerful weapon for the Priest. Add it to the pile.
(4) Spectral Cutlass Type: Weapon Class: Rogue Rarity: Epic Lifesteal: Whenever you play a card from another class, gain +1 Durability. Source: Gamer.com.tw
Analysis: This weapon comes a little bit late for the Standard Rogue. With Swashburglar, Undercity Huckster, and Shaku, the Collector all rotating out, there aren't as many tools out there to generate cards from another class.
That's why Spectral Cutlass will appeal more to the Wild player. Not only do they get these cards and others that can generate cards from other classes, they'll get all the tools from Oil Rogue to make this weapon even deadlier. Standard Rogues will want to stick with Kingsbane and its various buffs, but Wild Rogues will find this weapon to be an enticing option.
(7) Bogshaper (4/8) Type: Minion - Elemental Class: Shaman Rarity: Epic Whenever you cast a spell, draw a minion from your deck. Source: Panthra on YouTube
Analysis: This is a pretty big boost for the Shaman player, especially the Elemental Shaman. It's a little expensive, but being able to draw minions from within your deck by using spells is helpful. This is where it hurts a little bit that Hex got nerfed to 4 Mana.
The card draw could prove very useful to the Elemental Shaman, since they can draw Servant of Kalimos or even Kalimos, Primal Lord to play on the next turn.
(5) Deathweb Spider (4/6) Type: Minion - Beast Class: Warlock Rarity: Epic Battlecry: If your hero took damage this turn, gain Lifesteal. Source: Master Wang on Panda.TV
Analysis: A vanilla 4/6 for 5 Mana isn't particularly terrible. If it gets Lifesteal, it's gravy, which seems to be the idea here. It doesn't even have to be damage from one of your cards, but simply from a Life Tap. But hey, if you do have a Kobold Librarian at the ready, go nuts.
The case against Deathweb Spider is that Carnivorous Cube is still just too good for the exact same stats and cost. If the Cube gets nerfed (and I would have to think that idea's still on the table somewhere at Blizzard), then maybe we can discuss Deathweb Spider's playability. Otherwise, this is a decent Arena selection and not much more.
(4) Blood Witch (3/6) Type: Minion Class: Warlock Rarity: Rare At the start of your turn, deal 1 damage to your hero. Source: Autumn on Panda.TV
Analysis: A 3/6 on Turn 4 is pretty good, but the Blood Witch comes with the downside of getting 1 damage to your Hero. On top of that, it's an even-Cost minion, so it's not like you'll be getting free Life Taps to offset this damage.
On the plus side, this is very helpful in bumping up the Lesser Amethyst Spellstone quickly. Just be careful not to go overboard with this minion or you'll find yourself in a hole quickly. If you don't need the damage that badly, insert the usual Twilight Drake in this spot instead.
(3) Duskbat (2/4) Type: Minion - Beast Class: Warlock Rarity: Common Battlecry: If your hero took damage this turn, summon two 1/1 Bats. Source: Valerie on Panda.TV
Analysis: A 2/4 body on Turn 3 certainly isn't a bad thing. Without Imp Gang Boss, it's the easiest way to get 1/1s off a 3-Cost minion.
Where Duskbat doesn't quite work is the fact that it's a Beast. Without the Demon synergy, it's hard to recommend this when Vulgar Homunculus offers virtually the same stats. As much as I like the idea of the Battlecry, I think there are better Warlock options out there.
(4) Dire Frenzy Type: Spell Class: Hunter Rarity: Common Give a Beast +3/+3. Shuffle 3 copies into your deck with +3/+3. Source: AKAWonder on YouTube
Analysis: This will be grizzly!
The Hunter got a really good spell here, one that's usable on just about any one of its many Beasts. Just the +3/+3 boost would be good enough, but getting three copies of the buffed minion (not just the minion with the base stats) is insanely great. Maybe give this to a Charge minion? How about to a Vicious Fledgling? How about to any one of Deathstalker Rexxar's Zombeasts?
This is a great spell and one that's going to see a lot of play, especially from Spell Hunter. It has the potential to be overpowered, but we'll see how this one goes in the early stages of the new meta.
(8) Gilnean Royal Guard (3/8) Type: Minion Class: Neutral Rarity: Rare Divine Shield, Rush: Each turn this is in your hand, swap its Attack and Health.
(4) Swift Messenger (2/6) Type: Minion Class: Neutral Rarity: Common Rush: Each turn this is in your hand, swap its Attack and Health.
(2) Spellshifter (1/4) Type: Minion Class: Neutral Rarity: Common Spell Damage +1: Each turn this is in your hand, swap its Attack and Health.
Analysis: Did you miss this exclusive reveal from Shacknews? We have our full analysis up right now.
youtube
(5) Dollmaster Dorian (2/6) Type: Minion Class: Neutral Rarity: Legendary Whenever you draw a minion, summon a 1/1 copy of it. Source: Disguised Toast on YouTube
Analysis: Oh, dear. We may have a winner for this expansion.
Dollmaster Dorian is an incredibly powerful card that works with just about any class in the game. Use it with any number of card-drawing spells like Power Word: Shield, Wrath, Slam, or card-drawing minions like Mana Tide Totem.
There are a multitude of ways to maximize Dollmaster Dorian's potential. Quest Priests are going to love him for sure. But what about Quest Druids, who may be able to summon a 0-Cost Dorian and combine him with the 10-Cost Ultimate Infestation? What about Rogues who would like to combine this with Elven Minstrel? What about Paladins running Divine Favor? All of this is a great use for Dorian and that's not even touching on the players thinking about chomping down on that 1/1 copy with Carnivorous Cube.
This is going to be a mainstay in Hearthstone far beyond The Witchwood. Dollmaster Dorian is here to stay.
That's it for now! Keep it on Shacknews for the next few weeks for more card breakdowns for the Witchwood, leading all the way up to the expansion's release on Thursday, April 12.

The Witchwood: Frantic Reveals
Lots of card reveals today! It’ll be a bit tricky to keep up, but luckily some of these cards are kind of boring.
Spellshifter is a guy who is sometimes a wolf. Also a sturdy Spell Damage provider in human, which I guess is not awful. Worgen form is a downside this card doesn’t really need, rendering it mostly unplayable every other turn.
Swift Messenger is another shifty minion where stat switching is more of downside. If you could control it, this would be really, really good. Human form is good against decks trying to swarm you, while Worgan form can take a nice bite out of bigger minions. But since swapping is automatic, this could easily end up in the wrong form at the worth moment.
Dire Frenzy is Gang Up, but for Hunter. Okay, not exactly - it only works on beasts, and gives the target a buff, which is pretty nice. Generating more minions is nice, especially if they get strong, but Dire Frenzy has one small problem. Hunters can’t draw cards! So all those +3/+3′d beasts will be sitting in your deck, sad and unused.
Duskbat is a card for Warlocks that want to hurt themselves. That’s okay, I guess, but it’s not really playable on turn three. But it’s okay slightly later, with Kobold Librarian or Flame Imp. Return of Zoo, for real this time?
Gilnean Royal Guard is a minion you really, really want to play in Worgen form. Eight damage clears a whole lot of stuff, and Divine Shield means it can have another swing if it’s not answered. The human form is less amazing, since it only hits for three. Combine with Lady in White for an 8/8 Rusher, which could be useful.
Blood Witch has has a probably minor downside. But no minor upside to go with it, unless you count activating a few effects as an upside. I don’t really see a reason to play this.
Spectral Cutlass is a weapon of dubious quality. Two attack is acceptable in the early game, but by the time four mana minions start dropping, it’s clearly sub par. Getting extra durability would be nice, allowing you to extend your weapon buffs, but the trigger is awkward. Cards from other classes aren’t exactly in high supply, especially with Year of the Kraken sets rotating out. You can DIY a Kingsbane that’s better than this four the same mana investment, and Shadowblade is cheaper and more powerful. Lifesteal: probably not actually worth two mana, really.
Bogshaper is the other side to all these minion triggered spell generators. Seven mana is a bit costly, blocking you from play many spells the turn it comes down. But it’s bulky, so it might survive more than one turn, allowing for a quick minion refill. Bogshaper also makes Hagatha less dire, since Totemic Might suddenly becomes a zero mana card draw. Also, Earth Shock and Frost Shock are pretty okay if they cycle, so it’s not all doom and gloom.
Deathweb Spider is a big scary spider. Also, it’s another card that rewards you for hurting yourself, by helping you get better by gaining Lifesteal. Except Warlock decks that want healing already have a several options for healing. While Mistress of Mixtures is going away, Deathweb Spider doesn’t help you in the early game, so it’s not a good replacement. It’s not as useless as Bood-Queen Lana’thel, but that’s not a high bar to clear.
Dollmaster Dorian is the bootleg and also balanced version of Barnes. Good in decks that draw lots of cards and have many minions. In most cases, free minions are good, but Dorian does have the drawback of announcing your card draws. But if you just summoned a free Voidlord or Obsidian Statue, I don’t think you’ll be too unhappy with that. The fairly high mana cost is a bit of a drawback, but as a neutral card, there are lots of angles to try this from.
Only 24 days until Infinity Wat. Eeeee!
