Thinking about how it’s been nearly a year since the Doc Appropriation and yet I am TO THIS DAY informing people of his actions.

HE HAS NOT APOLOGIZED. HE STILL HAS PEOPLE BLOCKED. HE STILL BELIEVES HE IS IN THE RIGHT, EVEN AFTER THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE TOLD HIM HE WAS BEING RACIST. He literally pulled the “I have a POC friend” card and y’all LET HIM GET AWAY WITH THAT????? IM?????

I’m just. Man. Thousands are still affected by this. The majority of the fandom just fucking ignored the fact that he condoned fucking black and redface, or just didn’t know, because (most) of the people who DID know didn’t think it was worthy of spreading around.

Sometimes I think we’re out of the woods in terms of toxic Hermitblr and then I remember this. Open your fucking eyes people.

okay, normally we don't discourse post here but: i am APPALLED by the major lack of any uproar over the comments doc made, both on the part of other hermits and also the fandom itself. this shit is fucking egregious and absolutely not forgivable, but the large majority of fandom has moved on.

we, someone who actually has at least one (or more, but i can only think of one concrete example) indigenous friend, are fucking floored by how tone-deaf doc is and how everyone has let it slide. this is some bullshit and quite frankly, it majorly puts us off of watching hermitcraft or recommending it to others.

we probably won't be working on anything hermitcraft-related for a while, especially not anything that would require us to write doc - yes, that means 77-2 is on indefinite hiatus. we'll still reblog art from friends because, like, good art is good, but you're gonna see a lot less outside of that.

uplift diasporic - first nations, jewish, rroma, other people of color - voices; side with those who do and shun those who don't.

i know people have been waiting on the next 77-2 update for over half a year now but i cannot in good conscience continue writing the series while sona=creator is still the norm in the hermitcraft fandom. i cannot in good conscience create any sort of content starring someone whose centrist bullshit is exactly the kind of rhetoric that has been and will continue to get marginalized people killed.

i can’t do it. maybe if the hermitcraft fandom takes a page out of the yogscast fandom’s book and divorces sona from creator, maybe in a month or two when i feel personally able to do that again and write more 77-2, but not right now. not right now at all. apologies to fans of the series, but it probably won’t be seeing more updates in the near future.

Hullo, I really don’t mean to come off as validating Doc’s stand so please don’t take it as me doing so if I do! That out of the way, would it be possible to salvage the situation in any way? I know that Doc said some real. Not good. Stuff. Would it be possible to change his stance on the situation if people managed to convey the ways in which his views are wrong collectively? (1/5)

He’s mentioned quite a few times and just recently again that he dislikes racism very much and perhaps showing that his stance is actually racist and explaining why it is will get him to reconsider and realise his wrongs? It may just be that he doesn’t see how what he’s doing is racist because in his eyes he’s making sure to pay due respects while playing the character (2/5)

(thus perhaps to him negating the “wrongness” of his action? Again, just a guess as to why Doc may think the way he does rn, not condoning it at all!!) but not seeing that the action of him playing an indigenous character itself is wrong. (3/5)

Perhaps if the misconception were addressed and the explanation as to why his behavior is wrong was done in a way that caught Doc’s attention in a way that does not appear biased and judgmental his mind may be able to be changed. Perhaps a few native watchers who are not comfortable with Doc’s stance could also explain why they are uncomfortable and prompt Doc into seriously having to reconsider if the very people he wants to portray are not in approval of it? I understand that it might take a lot of effort to compile such a document of such large degree to boot, but perhaps if something is agreed on or something else as unified, something may be able to be done/a possible solution be found to change the outcome of the current situation for the better? hey anon! i think this is genuinely a great idea, and i’d say that doc walking back his actions and admitting that he was mistaken would be one of the best ways this could possibly end up resolving. i’d hate for this to end up going the way of some previous mcyt stuff (yogscast comes to mind, though i was really on the outskirts of that).

organizing and explaining in a reasonable manner why the behavior is wrong and why his actions hurt - holding your heroes accountable, as it were - does the world for people who either can’t speak up or feel like they’re being ignored. so by all means (especially if you are white) please do contact doc! keep your interactions civil - i’m not looking to form a hate brigade or call someone out - but let him know in no uncertain terms that this stuff is unacceptable.

i’ll admit i don’t really have high hopes for the situation at hand - i’m a bit too cynical, i guess - but well thought-out and articulated arguments like yours do the world for people who are being ignored and spoken over. even if doc refuses to change, people standing behind those who were wronged is a very good thing.

(any indigenous/first nations/native followers, please add onto this if need be - i’ll confess we’re not exactly well-versed in this kind of discourse, this comes from a general place of “what to do when someone is being kind of a fuckass”)

Hi! I just checked your blog to see if I was safe to reblog something from you. And?? I'm confused about why Doc is on your list of "dont interact if you're an apologist"? Did I miss read it?? Theres only one thing I could assume that would be about so im lost and concerned.

Hey, that’s perfectly valid, as the discourse around Doc isn’t very well known (which is a uh. A thing that I’m not very proud of the community for).

Around February of last year, Doc made a series of tweets regarding his character during the Wild West arc of Hermitcraft, saying that he wished he could’ve play a parody of Chief Sitting Bull, redface and all. And upon hearing the very negative responses to this tweet, he:

- condoned black/redface in Minecraft

- said that because he was friends with an indigenous content creator (PauseUnPause, to be specific), this redface he would’ve done was okay

- defended himself by saying “he knew American history” when he has only visited America as a tourist and has only learned the Abridged American History European schools offer

- proceeded to block Indigenous twitter users (this is something I am unsure about, don’t take this one as fact as I don’t have evidence for it)

This is not something he has apologized for, he did not apologize at the time, and even with people emailing him, he has not apologized since. Because of this, I do not watch Doc. A lot of people still do watch Doc, and I am ok with this. I cannot control the content people consume.

HOWEVER, if you are going to actively bash me for going against Doc, or are going to defend Doc for his racist bullshit, you count as an apologist, and you are not to interact with this blog. I don’t care if you watch his content, I care if you say what he did was perfectly fine.

Sorry for my toning on here, I take racism very seriously, and here’s a reminder that I am not angry at you, nonnie. I hope this clears it up :)

if you want doc to own up to his actions, send the man an email, dont sit here on tumblr crying about it for an entire month. he actively reads and checks his emails and its a solid way of contacting him.

“crying about it” is a really weird way of saying “raising awareness of a serious problem,” anon. thanks for the pitiful bait. as for an actual response:

simply put, we do not feel safe directly contacting doc, given that he has either ignored or outright dismissed criticism from Twitter (including several friends of ours) and maintains contact with a fandom artist that we have (very personal) distrust of. it would be an excellent idea for anyone who does have good standing in the fandom to contact him, and if anyone were to put together a general petition-type email we’d be happy to sign off on it.

our part in this is largely going to be boosting the voices of others; there’s only so much one person who quite frequently gets spoken over and/or nitpicked can do. we can only do so much while still retaining our own personal privacy and safety.

how about you, anon? what are you going to do? send an email to doc yourself like you suggest? uplift the voices of indigenous people in the community who are explaining why this is bad and pay closer attention to matters like this in the future? reach out to those affected by the issues and learn about how to better deal with things like this coming up? or are you just going to anonymously whine about people calling doc out on something he did very, very wrong?

hello if anyone is still following us for doccourse i would like to remind you to keep your vitriol away from communication with him. don't be an asshole directly to the guy. i don't want to organize a hate brigade, we started this in hope of someone with good standing explaining why this is wrong.

am i disappointed in the many people that have claimed it "isn't that big of a deal" while in the same breath mentioning that they're white and it "isn't their place to judge"? yeah, i am, because that's pretty much maintaining the status quo, not allyship. but you shouldn't send them hate. don't be rude to them because they're being - er, for lack of a better term, white?

when someone comes directly to us anonymously and says some dumb shit, we respond rudely because they made the choice to send us a rude message. it doesn't help change our opinion on the matter. it just makes us more pissed off.

so... don't do that and don't be that guy who does that. i know we're all pissed, but you don't change minds by yelling at people. if you reach out to doc or someone else, do so calmly and politely; unfortunately, rioting does not work for so small a matter.

he said he had ONE friend who was indigenous. someone who literally might not even have known they were being tokenized. not to mention during the entire debacle, doc didn't respond to a single nonwhite person. that includes a first nations attorney, basically anyone with a profile picture that had darker skin. you can check. i did.

also just because one person says it's okay doesn't mean the majority are okay, doesn't mean it's actually an okay thing. look at all the native voices both in fandom and off to the side that are like "oh wow this shit sucks"

anon, if you are the type of person who actually holds this opinion, that is valid, but i’m well used to people trying to trick others into saying something that can be held against them when the situation resolves. in other words -

i’m gonna take this opportunity to remind people to politely inform others, including doc, of what happened and why it was wrong. don’t send hate, don’t harass people, no threats, no out-and-out “cancelled forever and we won’t tell you why,” et cetera.

we’ve gotten asks like this before (both times we accidentally started fandom drama that was not as serious as this) and responding to them can often add fuel to the fire. i’m not really interested in a funeral pyre for doc, i’d like him to own up to his actions.

i apologize for the hcdiscposting on here possibly stressing people out, but also i’m just absolutely disgusted by the lack of press this situation is getting. when there was hcship discourse, it was inescapable. when x did something bad, it was all over everyone’s dashes for at least a week. fics ubiquitous in fandom - both infamous and famous - are so everpresent that it’s just straight up impossible to ask people to tag for them.
