19 Dec 2022: What if shops didn’t sell things?
Tumblr media
Hail and farewell
This is the last Co-op Digital newsletter. It has had an excellent and enjoyable run, thank you to everyone who helped get it going with decisions, everyone who kept it going with content, and everyone who read it. We’ve been wrapping up with 3 questions. Previously: more radical membership and more than a shop?
Thank you all for reading and sending ideas. The Co-op story continues on the magnificent Co-op Digital blog. Rod will still be writing about climate change and carbon transformation at Holdfast and about money at Checksies. See you there?
What if shops didn’t sell things?
Supermarkets and many other types of retail businesses are often high volume/tight margin machines, looking to increase volume and find small gains and complementary products and services with higher margins. Will this always be the case?
As climate change bites into the world, making it less predictable, will the cost and availability of materials change the dynamic for retail? Do supply chains fracture? Will managing the entire lifecycle of products and packaging add cost that makes retail unviable, or will it unlock new business? Can shopping fit into circular economies if recycling and reuse becomes central? What if shops bought things from you, instead of selling them to you?
2040
Aya looks the length of the warehouse. There’s a haze in the distance where the unfactory starts and above the superstructure is barely visible behind the ambient dayglow. A city inside a building.
She pulls the door shut on her housing unit and walks to the bus stop. There’s only a couple of minutes to wait before a driverless bus pulls up. These carbon grey boxes crawl the building, patiently looping between the different work, housing and leisure zones.
Aya gets on the bus and sits. Her glasses immediately pop up an interactive about hitting this month’s KPIs. With a glance she flicks it away, and looks the other way to access shopping. A carousel of plaid shirts flickering across the field of view, partly obscuring the view out of the window of apartment blocks, terraced 2-up 2-downs, community centres, and behind her in the distance parkland and the executive mcmansions. Aya considers buying a shirt that says 2005 and has all the confidence of that era. The checkout dances and says: “Hey you know you could put that 229.50 into something more long term? Say Pension to put it to work for you.” Aya sighs, shuts her eyes and whispers “Cancel”, the UI an afterimage in reversed colours.
Aya steps off the bus at the warehousing zone and passes through two layers of perimeter security: ID badge and then a tongue print which performs ID verification and a recreational drugs test. Now she is matter-side. She steps through the air wall into a cavernous space: kilometres of racking, ducting, assembly areas, disassembly areas, recycling, storage, cabling, transport, uncountable shelves of racking and gigantic bays of raw material.
10 years ago, at peak shopping, this building was Amazon’s largest fulfilment centre, the entire building performing inventory, pick and pack - all of it heading into cardboard boxes, out the loading bays and to everyone’s home via the Amazon-only lanes on the motorways.
Since then, the building has grown and evolved in response to 15 years of carbon budgets and circular economy targets. The shadow of the smile logo is still faintly visible on the wall. The work is now two-way: they’re doing as much inbound for recycling as they do outbound retail: the increasing value of material feedstocks made disassembly and recycling higher margin businesses. Across the way, building crews are pulling out the pick and pack racking, and hauling in more recyc stations.
Conveyor belts of toys, consumer goods, electronics, plastic items, everything. Some things are automatically sorted, separated by size or material type into smaller flows on smaller conveyors, a river delta. The metal goes off along a conveyor to be remelted in a distant area. The plastic is ripped apart into uncountable white-edged grains of feed stock.
Further away, and behind more layers of security, are the goop vats where the synthetic bio voodoo happens. There’s a smell of ammonia and long chain polymers everywhere, which the air ducting cannot ever remove entirely.
Here though, the river belt meanders through rows of stations, where human-robot pairs work next to each other, pulling objects off the main belt and moving them to several smaller tributary belts for onward sorting.
Aya walks up to the only unstaffed station. A fixed robot is at the wide conveyor belt. Its body is a 7-axis spine of rotatable stainless steel segments that look more like muscles than components. Its arm ends in an array of cameras, lidar sensors and rubber tipped and suction manipulators. Around the robot is a 2 metre no-go zone hashed out in hazard orange. It has placed several objects in that space around its base. A Casio watch. A christmas tree toy. A clown painting on black velvet. Lego pieces.
The supervisor approaches and shrugs at Aya: “You make it work, if you can. I in’t going near it though…” Aya swipes her badge into the work station. The robot’s arm monitors everything that passes on the belt under it, occasionally twitching as if indecisive. But it is not moving and not sorting items.
Aya watches the belt for a while and reaches out to pick up an old lunch box in blue and red plastic. She shows it to the robot, and then with great care Aya places it on the floor, inside the no-go zone, and steps back. The robot’s arm bends, the array inspecting the lunchbox for several seconds.
Then it straightens, moves back over the belt, and starts grabbing objects and sorting them.
Thank you for reading

The Importance and Advantages of Air Freight in Global Trade
In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, air freight has emerged as a crucial component of the global logistics ecosystem. It offers unparalleled speed and efficiency, ensuring that goods reach their destinations quickly, safely, and reliably. Whether it's perishable goods, high-value items, or urgent shipments, air freight plays a pivotal role in keeping businesses competitive in a global marketplace. This article delves into the key aspects of air freight, its advantages, and its importance in international trade.
What is Air Freight?
Air freight, also known as air cargo, refers to the transportation of goods via aircraft. It can include everything from commercial airline cargo holds to dedicated cargo planes operated by logistics companies. Air freight is particularly well-suited for shipments that need to be delivered quickly or for high-value, lightweight goods where time-sensitive delivery is a priority.
Key Benefits of Air Freight
Speed Air freight is unmatched when it comes to speed. While sea freight may take weeks to transport goods across continents, air freight often completes the journey within a few days. This makes it ideal for businesses dealing with time-sensitive shipments, such as perishable goods or critical components needed for production lines.
Global Reach Airports are present in almost every major city worldwide, providing extensive global connectivity. This network allows businesses to access markets in remote regions, making air freight a vital tool for international trade and e-commerce.
Reliability Airlines adhere to strict schedules, which means air freight offers a higher degree of reliability compared to other modes of transportation. Even if delays occur, they are often resolved quickly, ensuring that shipments reach their destination as planned.
Security With stringent regulations and advanced security measures, air freight provides a high level of safety for valuable or sensitive shipments. Goods transported by air are less likely to be damaged or stolen compared to other modes of transport.
Reduced Inventory Costs The rapid delivery times associated with air freight enable businesses to maintain lower inventory levels. This reduces warehousing costs and supports just-in-time (JIT) supply chain strategies.
Types of Goods Transported by Air Freight
Air freight is used for a wide variety of goods, including:
Perishables: Fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, and flowers.
High-value items: Jewelry, electronics, and pharmaceuticals.
Urgent goods: Spare parts for machinery, medical supplies, or documents.
E-commerce shipments: Light, high-value goods ordered online.
Challenges in Air Freight
While air freight offers numerous advantages, it also comes with its set of challenges:
Cost Air freight is significantly more expensive than sea or land freight. The cost per kilogram is high, which can make it prohibitive for bulky, low-value goods.
Environmental Impact Aircraft emissions contribute to carbon pollution, making air freight one of the least eco-friendly transportation methods. However, the industry is working on reducing its environmental footprint through innovative technologies and alternative fuels.
Capacity Limitations Airplanes have limited cargo space compared to ships or trucks, which can restrict the volume and dimensions of goods that can be transported.
Weather Dependence Severe weather conditions can disrupt air freight schedules, leading to delays.
Innovations in Air Freight
The air freight industry continues to evolve, adopting innovative solutions to meet growing demands:
Digital Transformation Technologies like AI, IoT, and blockchain are being used to optimize routes, monitor cargo conditions, and enhance transparency.
Green Initiatives Airlines are exploring sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) and more fuel-efficient aircraft to reduce their carbon footprint.
E-commerce Growth The rise of e-commerce has driven the demand for faster delivery solutions, leading to dedicated cargo networks and partnerships between airlines and logistics companies.
Choosing the Right Air Freight Service Provider
Selecting a reliable air freight partner is crucial for businesses. Look for providers with a robust global network, a proven track record of on-time deliveries, and value-added services such as customs clearance and real-time tracking.
Conclusion
Air freight is an indispensable mode of transportation for businesses that value speed, reliability, and global connectivity. While it comes with challenges like high costs and environmental concerns, ongoing innovations in the industry promise to make air freight even more efficient and sustainable in the future. Whether you're a small e-commerce business or a multinational corporation, leveraging air freight can provide a significant competitive edge in today’s fast-paced global economy.

Unlocking Business Potential with Asset Tracking Systems: A Comprehensive Guide
In today’s business landscape, where maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste are top priorities, asset tracking systems have become indispensable. These systems provide companies with the tools to manage and monitor their assets in real-time, driving cost savings, reducing losses, and improving productivity. But what exactly are asset tracking systems, and how do they transform operations across industries? This guide explores how asset tracking systems work, the technologies behind them, and the unique benefits they offer businesses.
What is an Asset Tracking System?
An asset tracking system is a solution that enables organizations to monitor their physical assets, such as equipment, inventory, and vehicles, from a central platform. By tagging assets with unique identifiers and tracking them through various technologies, companies can instantly view an asset’s location, usage, and status. This visibility allows for greater control over assets, streamlined operations, and improved decision-making.
Core Technologies Behind Asset Tracking
Different asset types and business needs require various tracking technologies. Let’s look at the most common ones:
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) RFID tags are small, wireless devices attached to assets, ideal for short-range tracking. RFID is especially effective for inventory management and is widely used in retail and warehousing.
GPS (Global Positioning System) GPS trackers offer precise, real-time location tracking, making them indispensable for fleets and other mobile assets. Logistics and transportation companies often use GPS to manage and monitor vehicle locations and routes.
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) BLE is cost-effective and suitable for indoor asset tracking over shorter distances. Hospitals and office buildings commonly use BLE to locate equipment or monitor assets within their facilities.
Barcode and QR Codes For simpler tracking needs, barcode and QR code scanning provide a low-cost, manual tracking solution. Though it requires scanning, it’s effective for inventory in retail or warehouses with limited budgets.
IoT Sensors IoT sensors enable real-time tracking of asset location, environmental conditions, and even usage data. Ideal for industries with strict environmental control needs, such as pharmaceuticals and food storage, these sensors provide comprehensive data to ensure product quality and safety.
Key Benefits of Asset Tracking Systems
Asset tracking systems bring a host of advantages to businesses, from cost savings to improved efficiency. Here are some of the key benefits:
1. Real-Time Visibility and Control
Asset tracking provides a bird’s-eye view of asset locations and conditions, allowing businesses to make timely, data-driven decisions. Real-time visibility helps reduce asset misplacement, loss, and downtime.
2. Improved Asset Utilization
By understanding how assets are being used, companies can optimize their allocation. Underutilized assets can be reassigned, while frequently used assets can be prioritized for upgrades or maintenance. This leads to more efficient resource management and lower operational costs.
3. Enhanced Security and Loss Prevention
For companies with high-value assets, security is paramount. Asset tracking systems offer location alerts and geofencing features that notify managers if an asset moves outside a designated area, significantly reducing the risk of theft or unauthorized use.
4. Maintenance and Lifecycle Management
Many asset tracking systems support preventive maintenance by automatically sending alerts when equipment requires servicing. This proactive approach extends the lifespan of assets and avoids costly repairs due to breakdowns.
5. Streamlined Auditing and Compliance
For regulated industries, tracking systems simplify compliance and auditing. By automatically logging asset histories and usage, they create a digital paper trail that is easy to access and verify, reducing the administrative burden during audits.
Industries Benefiting from Asset Tracking Systems
Asset tracking systems are transforming the way different sectors operate. Here are some examples of industries where asset tracking has a significant impact:
