Desynced
So I really like Desynced.
Strictly speaking, it doesn't 100% fit what I was talking about in my Homestuck manifesto, since it's technically a Homestuck fan adventure rather than a brand new work.
However…for a fanwork, it feels more like a new piece of Homestuckian art than many others I've seen?
I'm reminded of an old Hussie formspring response, where the question was about what would happen if siblings living in the same house played SBURB. Hussie's response was that one shouldn't try to solve this with the rules of Homestuck, but instead imagine the kind of story and plot that would suit such a scenario.
Desynced is like that - playing by its own rules. A lot of other fan adventures feel too stuck (ha) in adhering to the rules of SBURB and Paradox Space. Desynced is quite literally playing an entirely different game. It lets go of so much about the way a fan story is traditionally conceived, and brings in its own set of laws and ideas that fit its own story better.
Some things I like, in no particular order:
-The depiction of parents and children - Desynced knocks this out of the park by splitting the difference between faceless authority figures and relatable kids by playing with perception and letting the parents talk to each other as adults, even when they're faceless to their kids. There is some really phenomenal parent-child content here. The relationship between Kate and her father, for instance, is fraught and filled with missed conversations that break my heart
-That in 2024, everybody in the main group gets to be queer and trans from the very start
-That the protagonist kids are Zoomers, and we see that their interests tend not toward 80s movies but things like Minecraft and Discord chats
-That we seem to be building towards a "war in heaven" theme, where different members of the future gods and Carapacians will take different sides in a cosmic struggle
-The music, which is full of bangers and feels like the sequel to the Homestuck bandcamp page that I never knew I needed
-The total reimagining of Jack Noir, which seems like it shouldn't work, but totally does
-The genius way that the game's equivalent of Denizens tie into weird cosmic mysteries
-Alien kids who appear at first glance to be trolls but are quickly revealed to not be trolls at all (maybe they're tieflings)
-The way in this universe, Trollsonas only exist in connection to an obscure game called Hiveswap
-The fact that the fantasy land inhabitants, the equivalent of consorts, are more fleshed out and have their own lives going on instead of just being silly animals - which hints that we're taking 'their existence more seriously and sincerely.
-That when Desynced does "play the Homestuck hits," it reminds you of how good those narrative structures are. Examples include:
Ordinary internet friend group discovers they are all interconnected and inveigled in a vast conspiracy
Making sense of the rules of a confusing alternate gamey-reality that suggests a sense of purpose but doesn't give you instructions for achieving it
Oh, and also, you have to do this while the world is ending and you're about to die
Villain narrator makes fun of you, the reader
Alien kids interrupt your game session to ramble at you about how they know much more about the game than you do, but it turns out they're just a tiny bit ahead and they're as confused about most things as you are
Ascending to godhood helps you redefine your identity but also causes as many problems as it solves
It's like, woah, Homestuck was really cooking, wasn't it?
We're all so used to the Homestuck plot structures and conventions that I think it's very easy to lose sight of why we fell in love with it in the first place. Reading Desynced made me remember how much I love the premise of Homestuck. Desynced achieves this by detaching from convention and focusing on Homestuck's themes: parent-child relationships, the limitations of one's ideology, the double-edged sword of finding identity in fantasy, and more.
So yes, Desynced is a Homestuck fanwork. But if we're asking where a Homestuck literary movement might go in the future, Desynched offers us a really neat glimpse of part of the answer.
I highly recommend checking it out, if you're interested.

All the Time in the World Chapter 11
“Why are you coming to me about this?” Like, he gets it, a sparring club was a good idea, but shouldn’t Kirishima go to one of his teachers that gives them practical classes? Admittedly, Majima should be helping Yagi and Aizawa, but Nezu hasn’t bitched at him to do it yet, so he wasn’t going to start.
“Because I went to All Might, but he said that he was too busy to be our sponsor, and Aizawa told me that you aren’t in charge of a club yet, which means that you can’t say no.” Aizawa, you prick! He was really hoping that everyone had forgotten that little detail of his contract, but damnit, why’d he have to be such a good teacher.
“Fine, you have other members for this shit show?”
“Yes sir! Myself, Bakugo, Midoriya, Uraraka, and Asui are the ones who signed up for it.”
“That’s it? Huh, you’d figure there’d be more than that.”
“I just asked enough people to have the minimum of five.”
“Makes sense. Why are you trying to start this up, anyway? Where’d the idea come from?”
“Well, the final exams are in a few weeks, and we still don’t know what we’re going up against for the practical part of it. There’s a chance that we might have to solve a problem without our quirks, or be forced to fight without them.”
“Well, at least you’ve thought this through a little bit.” He sighed loudly, standing up from his seat at his desk. “I would like to let you know, Kirishima, that not only is this a stupid idea, but it is an idea so stupid that you have my support 100%.” Majima smirked when Kirishima started to cheer, not knowing what the time stopper’s next move was. “But!” He leaned in close to the redhead, his smirk growing into a wicked smile, “I want in.”
XXXXXXXXXXXX
Five of his students stood in front of him, decked out in their gym uniforms. It was early on a saturday, so Majima was still kind of drunk. Let’s hope Asui wouldn’t judge him for that, her bluntness cuts deep sometimes. He cleared his throat before he started, “Alright, bitches, here's the deal. I’m hungover, and I frankly, don’t care for… Roughly 60% of you, 40% on a good day. So, let’s just go over a few things.”
“First things first, no quirks. Uraraka, since you don’t really control when your quirk activates, I got some gloves for you from the nurse’s office. Kirishima, no hardening, Midoriya, no bone-breaking, and if you blow something up, Bakugo, I’ll kick your ass.”
“I’d like to see you try, asshole!” This little shit just doesn’t know when to quit, does he? Fine, Majima has an idea to deal with this shit.
“Alright then, you’re with me shit-stain. The rest of you, choose a partner.”
They both got into position while Majima took his shirt off, trying to ignore the looks his tattoos got him. Man, sometimes he regrets getting this thing. Seriously, the kids knew he was a villain, that’s fine, but he had kind of wanted to keep the yakuza thing a secret. Whatever. “You ready, bo-” Bakugo punched him in the face before he could finish. This bitch.
Majima reeled back, but managed to grab the blonde’s arm, using this leverage to go in for his own punch, nailing Bakugo in the stomach. He took a step back, shaking his head to try and regain his focus. But what do you know, Bakugo doesn’t know the meaning of the words “Wait a sec”, and immediately charged back in, throwing a right hook at his head. He blocked with his arm, and again grabbed the boys arm, pulling him in to knee his groin. The blonde dropped like a rock, a look of hate at his teacher while Majima laughed his fucking ass off. All of this happened in a span of 2 minutes, meaning that the other four students had watched the whole thing.
They looked at him with wide eyes as Bakugo charged at him with his hands crackling. Oh, he’s pissed, this should be fun. He should use his old bag of tricks for this, shouldn’t he? Alright, yeah, let’s use the desync trick. Majima didn’t snap his fingers, but his body was cloaked in a blinding white light. “Time Desync: Factor of 5!” The others couldn’t figure out what happened, but Bakugo was suddenly flying back and landing on the ground, knocked out cold.
He turned to look at his other students, “So, what have we learned about fighting today, class?”
“We’re not supposed to use our quirks, Majima-sensei! That’s cheating, and it’s super unmanly!” Kirishima, seemed to be… Much more upset about this than Majima thought he’d be. Guess he should explain himself.
“Remember Kirishima, scumbag tactics are the only way to win. If you are not willing to become a huge cheater, just to win a fight, then you don’t deserve to win that fight.” Every. SIngle. Student. They were all looking at him like he was crazy. “What?”
“Majima-sensei, that really doesn’t sound very heroic.” Asui said, finger on her chin as she thought it over.
“Heroic? Who the hell said anything about heroics? Last I checked, I’m still a villain!” To send his point home, he punched Kirishima in the face when he knew the boy wasn’t ready, knocking him to the ground. “Hell, I’m the best kind of villain! Evil, not out of conviction, not for survival, not for gain or revenge. I am evil, as a choice! Evil for evil’s sake!”
“What the hell’s the difference between that kind of evil and the others? You said that there were only the 3 kinds, but now you’re changin’ it?” Oh man, Kirishima sounded a bit worked up. He probably should have punched Midoriya instead of him.
“The difference is that there is an equal chance that I’ll kill someone out of boredom as there is the chance of the stealing a pack of gum. I commit evil not because I want to commit evil, but because there is evil to commit.” Oh wait, shit, there’s a lesson to be taught here, wasn’t there? “Besides, you need to get this notion of ‘manly fighting’ out of your head, kid, before someone pays the price.”
“What do you mean, sir?”
“Midoriya, Asui, start with some sparring. Uraraka, take Bakugo to the nurse. I’m a bit rusty with desync, and I can’t remember how much damage he was suppose to take. Better safe than sorry, yeah?” He then grabbed Kirishima by the shoulder and led him a bit away for some privacy.
“Let me ask ya something, kid. There’s a villain standing between you and a group of hostages, what do you do?”
“I defeat the vi-”
“Wrong.” Judging the confused look on the redhead’s face, he can guess that this lesson is tad bit overdue, “You prioritize the safety and rescue of the hostages, work to isolate the villain in an empty environment. You’ve been assigned to work with a team of six, fighting a group of three, how do you decide which opponent to fight?”
“I fight the strongest o-”
“Wrong. Kid, you call yourself the Red Riot. You want to honour the legacy of the Crimson Riot, then put aside the chivalrous shit for when the job is done.”
“But what about fairness? Honour in fighting your opponents? That’s everything that Crimson Riot stood for!”
“And what if someone gets killed, because you wanted to fight fair? Huh? How are you going to explain that to a father that he lost his daughter to a villain attack, because you didn’t do everything in your power to get the job done. Huh?! What will you do, Kirishima?!” Majima is getting a bit worked up, old memories he didn’t want to be reminded of, but this kid needs to learn this lesson. Like Midoriya and that giant robot all those months ago.
“I’ll fight harder! I’ll get stronger! I- I’ll-”
“Look, kid,” Majima put his hands on Kirishima’s shoulders, looking him in the eyes. He saw a lot of self doubt, and a whole slew of confusion, but he’s just trying to help. “Some people say that not everything can be solved with your fists, but you’d be surprised how many people will give up after a quick kick to the dick. Or grabbing a fistfull of hair, or a thumb in the eye, or a sneak attack, ambush, all matter of dirty tricks. So long as you can end your opponent, you do it. By any means necessary. You got it?”
“…”
“Hey! I said, you got it? Or am I going to have to demonstrate to you just how effective these tricks are?”
That got him, now he was starting to look a bit scared. “Yes, sensei!”
“Alright, now back to work with the others.” Majima watched Kirishima run over to the others, putting a hand on his lower back. Damn, desync really did a number on his back. He’ll have to start up his own training again, he?
XXXXXXXXXXXX
Parts of this chapter seemed rushed, I know. I was having a ton of trouble with this one, and I needed to get something out. Next chapter is where we start affecting the canon a bit, and I have a lot of really good stuff planned. As an aside, we finally have fan art. Go check it out on my tumblr, @zendozebra, or just click the link in my profile. I also give updates on why I’m not uploading, so while you’re there, give me a follow, better to gauge how many of you ungrateful fucks there really are.

It has been nearly a decade since Mass Effect 3 was originally released, and thanks to development constraints in the remaster, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition cut ME3‘s multiplayer, meaning the original version is the only way to experience that mode. The multiplayer servers are fortunately still up and running, but that doesn’t necessarily mean an online mode released all the way back in 2012 holds up in 2021.
Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer mode was derided at launch for a variety of reasons, but chiefly for its importance to the game’s single-player story. Before the release of the Extended Cut DLC, it was nearly impossible for solo players to achieve the Effective Military Strength rating required for game’s best possible ending. This was thanks to the Galactic Readiness mechanic, which measured the security level of the galaxy and could only be raised by successfully completing multiplayer missions. As the best ending’s required EMS rating was 5,000 and the base Galactic Readiness score cut Shepard’s total military strength to 50% of what players had actually attained, this understandably irritated many. With the aforementioned DLC, however, the stain of this controversy was slowly worn away.
Related: ME3’s DLC Crewmate Should Never Have Been A DLC
For such a contentious addition, Mass Effect 3‘s multiplayer mode itself is remarkably unremarkable: a squad-based horde mode where up to four players, as various classes and characters, team up to kill waves of AI enemies. There are 11 waves in total during a standard match, and the third, sixth and tenth waves have additional mandatory objectives (in exchange for extra in-game currency). The final wave is the extraction phase, wherein players must get to a specific area of the map before a two-minute timer reaches zero.
Though players can customize their weapons and characters, most of their options are unlocked via random packs; Mass Effect 3 contained one of gaming’s earliest loot box mechanics, but it’s perhaps one of the best examples of such a system. It’s relatively easy to earn enough in-game currency to afford crates with high chances at top-tier loot, and playing it now only emphasizes how much fairer it feels than most modern gacha mechanics. It’s still not a great system, in general, but it’s better than many others like it.
Tumblr media
While Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer gameplay systems don’t differ very much from the base game, it does put more emphasis on combatting threats while on the move. Since enemies can spawn anywhere on the map to outflank players, cover loses much of its protective benefit. In hindsight, this more dynamic combat style seems like the clear basis for ME3‘s maligned successor, Mass Effect: Andromeda. It gives the multiplayer a distinct feel, but the game’s basic shooting system was designed for cover, so multiplayer sometimes feel clunky – especially for character classes most comfortable at range. When a character starts to jive with a player, however, and they begin to cut swaths through the enemy ranks, it’s incredibly satisfying.
Unfortunately, Screen Rant found lag and strange desync issues common between even as few as two players. For example, enemies might teleport around as a player flies through the air, across the map, and finally back into normal gameplay. We weren’t able to verify whether current server issues are universal, but these problems were certainly not unheard of as far back as the game’s launch.
Coming back to Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer in 2021, it’s a mode marred by frustrating bugs, but these don’t break the experience. When it works, it’s a blast to play. Fans of this mode who were sad it wasn’t included in the remaster will find it’s still a fantastic time with friends.

Pirate Warriors 4 Review — This Pirate’s Life is For Me
April 2, 2020 2:00 PM EST
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 offers a faithful retelling of the iconic series’ story with thrilling combat to boot.
My last review was for a game based on My Hero Academia, an anime series I’ve never seen. That impacted my entire approach to the game as I was playing it as an outsider. This time around, playing One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, the situation is different, but not all that much. I loved watching Luffy’s weird pirate adventures as a kid, but as I grew up, the show dropped off for me. I’m shocked that it’s still continuing to this day, and can only imagine what’s changed on those pirate-filled seas.
Regardless, I know what One Piece is, but I still didn’t know what to expect from One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4. What I found was a wonderful retelling of the Straw Hat Pirates’ adventures partnered with exciting, albeit repetitive, gameplay. And while there are some hang-ups in the story that seem to stem from localization issues, it hardly takes anything away from this epic journey to the Grand Line and beyond.
youtube
“What I found was a wonderful retelling of the Straw Hat Pirates’ adventures partnered with exciting, albeit repetitive, gameplay.”
As I said, I went into One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 with a little bit of a background in the series. I knew who Luffy was, Zoro is one of my favorite characters from what I can remember, and the art style is more or less unsettling. And it seems like not much has changed since I watched the show as a kid, for better or worse.
All the same, the game’s story is a faithful retelling of this show’s 20-year saga. Billed as the dramatic log, you play through the story of One Piece from the very start, and I mean that quite literally. One of the first cutscenes you’ll see is of Luffy receiving his namesake straw hat from Red-Hair Shanks. The game takes you through all of One Piece’s main story arcs and, thankfully, doesn’t dwell on any filler. Sections of importance that you don’t play through are handled well through narrated cinematics and are highly reminiscent of the shonen anime.
Tumblr media
The real meat of the story comes at the climax of each arc, just as it does in the show. As emotions came to a head and tensions rose to a breaking point, I was engaged and enthralled. The world of One Piece is weird, juvenile, and wacky, but don’t think it isn’t filled with real drama or decent messages. I was even surprised to find some tear-jerking moments, like Usopp’s apology to the crew or Ace’s death.
That’s not to say the story of One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is without faults – there are plenty, they just aren’t written. The game’s more dramatic moments are shown through fully rendered cutscenes, and assumedly, they would showcase the game’s graphical fidelity. Admittedly, they do, but they’re also hindered by the often off-putting style of One Piece and some localization mix-ups.
The smallest of these sins are grammatical issues in the game’s translation – something I can more or less forgive. What I can’t forgive as much is the game’s beyond disappointing lip-syncing. In moments of high tension, the characters’ voices are almost completely desynced from their lips. Of course, neither of these take away from the fun I had with the game. However, they did take away from my experience with the story and detract from what should have otherwise been intense or heartbreaking moments.
Tumblr media
In the end, the journey you experience in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is perfect for a game adaptation. The video game version of Luffy’s saga is enough to intrigue someone with little to no background in One Piece, and its handling of the series’ more memorable moments should leave die-hard fans happy. If you’re looking for a more digestible way to get into the story of One Piece, that’s what this title is offering.
“The video game version of Luffy’s saga is enough to intrigue someone with little to no background in One Piece, and its handling of the series’ more memorable moments should leave die-hard fans happy. “
Looking over to how the game actually plays, it’s more or less the same story – a fantastic and rewarding experience with some hiccups in between. Overall, playing One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is like playing a Dynasty Warriors title. Every mission places you on an enormous battlefield – sometimes a large town with destructible buildings, or a large barren wasteland filled with enemies to pummel. And pummel, you do! Playing as one of the super-powered members of the roster puts you a few rungs up the food chain from your basic enemies.
Tumblr media
Combat is pretty straightforward – in most cases, you can just button mash your way to victory. In others, namely going up against bosses, you’ll have to actually mind their attacks, dodge out of the way, and whittle down an armor bar before dealing any real damage. Fighting can get repetitive if it’s approached like this, and I wouldn’t blame a player for doing so. It’s incredibly easy to mash the light attack button through a level. However, varying your attacks and combos, and making use of super moves makes the game infinitely more interesting.
While this system isn’t all that complex, it is satisfying. With a few moves, Luffy can attack swathes of enemies, fling them into the air, and then slam an enormous, inflated heel down. Every character in the game is also exceptionally well animated. Every single regular and special attack is given special attention to detail that in turn lends weight behind each punch, or viciousness behind each swipe of a sword. Just watching fights in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is a treat, taking control of one even more so.
Tumblr media
To spice up combat, each character has their own growth map and a suite of special moves. Special moves are activated with a combination of button presses, and if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll likely recognize them. These attacks each have a cooldown, so they’re best used against tougher enemies. You’re able to upgrade these abilities, as well as gain others and upgrade stats on the growth map. Each character has their own, and these maps are extensive.
Besides basic upgrades to health, speed, stamina and such, you can unlock and level-up special attacks and perks. You unlock all of these combat bonuses with a combination of coins and berries earned in-game. I found myself hardly needing to grind for more currency for upgrades, but the few times I did, it didn’t take long to earn more – thanks mostly to the game’s alternate modes.
Besides the story mode – which admittedly offers the most fun in the game – there are two other main game modes. Free logs simply give you the opportunity to play through story missions with any character, a fun little mix-up, but ultimately it doesn’t add much. Treasure Logs are where the game’s writers had the most fun, and you might too. In this game mode, you’ll find yourself in different scenarios and have to fight your way through them. They don’t change the game up much, but wacky scenarios and dialogue are well worth playing through some of them for, if not just for the coins and berries.
Tumblr media
“One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is what I look for in a game based on an anime or manga.”
While this all seems like a good experience, the most fun I had in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 was when I was able to play as one of the giant characters. For most of the game, you’re stuck playing as a regular-sized person. In One Piece standards, that’s pretty boring. However, playing as Whitebeard the pirate, a towering goliath wielding a staff that controls the wind, I was immediately thrilled. It’s the same kind of fun you have playing a Godzilla or King Kong game as you’re this giant, unstoppable force that smashes through the opposition. I understand why you don’t experience playing giant characters more in the story, but you haven’t really played the game until you give it a try.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is what I look for in a game based on an anime or manga. It was clearly made with special care directed towards the source material, and even if you’ve never heard of One Piece before, you’ll come out of this game loving its characters. And I have to say, as someone who’s not really a fan of games like Dynasty Warriors, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 pulls off the combat style with grace. Its combat has that one trait that takes a fighting system from good to great. It’s not just fun to play, but it’s fun to watch.
I haven’t played many One Piece games before, but Pirate Warriors 4 has set my sights on the series. For those getting into One Piece now, this title is a fantastic introductory that sets a high standard for future entries to come.

Shoutout to Zepotha for creating the absolutely delightful character Rumiren Oras, and thanks to Dizzms and the rest of the Desynced team for their absolutely PHENOMENAL web series. You should read it, it is incredibly good.
