Thunder

Read on AO3!

A/N: I wanted to play with my deaf Jackie headcanon in a PhantomHero context, and @iamvegorott gave me the idea that maybe Jackie's afraid of thunder.

“Jackie?” Phantom waled through the door and frowned at the darkness of the house that greeted him. He shrugged off his jacket, shaking the rain off him before setting it aside to dry, then headed into the house in search of Jackie.

Thunder boomed outside, flashes of lightning lighting the house at intervals and illuminating the abandoned dinner setup in the kitchen. Phantom lifted the lid of the pot on the stove, pulling a face at the smell of burnt curry, and his heart dropped with the thought of how disappointed Jackie would be.

“Sweetheart, where are—” he was cut off by the sound of whimpering, broken by gasps when lightning flashed. Following the sounds, Phantom found Jackie in the bedroom, huddled in the corner with his knees hugged to his chest.

Quietly, carefully, Phantom moved to crouch beside Jackie, hesitantly reaching out to touch his hand. A brief glance told him that Jackie wasn’t wearing his hearing aids, implying he had taken them off while cooking and the thunderstorm had caught him by surprise.

When Jackie flinched at another flash of lighting and rumble of thunder, Phantom gently tapped his hand in a comforting pattern, waiting for him to look up before giving him a smile. He lifted a hand, holding it toward Jackie’s head, then waited for Jackie to nod before cupping his hand over his ear, closing his eyes and pressing his forehead to Jackie’s.

“Are you alright?” he whispered, using his powers to make his hand into a makeshift hearing aid, waiting for Jackie to nod and his breathing to even out before continuing. “I wasn’t expecting the storm either, or I’d have come back home sooner to look after you.”

“I’m a hero, and I’m scared of thunderstorms,” Jackie berated himself, moving his hands to grip Phantom’s upper arms tightly. “The lightning and the vibrations are too unexpected, and they catch me off guard.”

“I know, honey,” Phantom whispered, slowly guiding Jackie to stand so they can sit on the bed. “But being afraid doesn’t make you any less of a hero. Things happen unexpectedly, and there’s no way to prevent it.” He waited while Jackie curled into his side, flicking on the bedside lamp and pressing Jackie’s hearing aids into his hands.

“I’m real grateful that you’re here,” Jackie whispered, tucking his aids into his pockets and resting his head against Phantom’s chest, letting the gentle thump of his heart soothe him. He hummed as Phantom started running his fingers through his hair, pulling the blanket up over them and leaning back so they were more comfortable.

“I’ll be here always,” Phantom replied quietly, knowing Jackie could sense what he was saying. “I’d never abandon my favourite hero, not when he needs me in a thunderstorm.” He smiled when Jackie nuzzled closer to him, closing his eyes and listening to Jackie’s breathing.

“I burnt dinner,” Jackie whispered tearfully, making Phantom chuckle.

“I’m not hungry.”

First, Bumblebee(2018) Wheeljack:D. I wanted to do it with long hair and I love how it turned out, possibly the dreadlocks were Bee's suggestion :]♡

And little comic when he cut his hair. Reason? He was in a crisis and had a pair of scissors next to him... yeah xd (in the end he doesn't regret the cut and he's glad arcee helped him :])

and as headcanons: Wheeljack is almost completely deaf and uses a little device for it, sometimes he puts little antennas on it <3. He also needs a wrist brace so his right hand doesn't shake too much :P

Ah, and Arcee is Colombian, from the coast and a fan of Junior. She wears a team shirt as pajamas xd (She and Jackie are exes but best friends)

I'd like to know your head canons on JBM, plus, how would Marvin react when they figure out that homophobia/transphobia exists?

Starting off with Marv, they'd mostly be like "???????? H u h??" In response to that because it just doesn't sound real to them tbh. Like "it's literally none of their business why are they so mad??".

NOW FOR JBM HCS.

- Jackie's HOH/Partially deaf, and uses hearing aids, he developed hearing problems in his childhood (around age 10) and uses BSL (my newest version of JBM is British-Irish)

- Jackie is the youngest out of all the egos so to everyone (except Marvin) he's seen as the younger brother/son figure

- Jackie's powers are a direct result of IRIS experimenting with Anti-Matter. He doesn't know this but he was specifically chosen to one day be the person to put an end to Anti's reign, but the experimentation didn't go as planned and Jackie was essentially cast aside (some IRIS workers were genuinely considering killing him so their work isn't revealed to the public).

-Carrying on from the last note; Jackie's powers can look extremely similar to Anti's because of the fact that he was created with stopping Anti in mind- meaning he has things like teleportation(however it's only in short bursts, think Hunter from The Owl House), an unnatural endurance, super strength and a level of control over electrical fields. One of the side effects is that his powers can occasionally become unstable if not regulated properly.

- Another side effect is the fact that he can't exactly die? Since his powers directly correlate with Anti (yk the guy that's literally in a "dead" body 24/7) his "healing abilities" arent the fact that he's healing it's that his body naturally works on injuries faster- meaning it would take something that would kill him instantaneously for it to actually work- otherwise he will eventually come back from it (also the healing doesn't mean he can't get scars anymore, he still gets scars from any injury he attains) and yes he does still feel pain

- Ever since he completely cut ties with IRIS, he out right refuses to use his powers as much as he is physically able too, sometimes he's unable too due to the fact that they are tied to his well-being and can come out during outbursts or moments involving high levels of stress, anger etc.

- his eyes used to be grey before everything happened, now they're extremely bright blue- he doesn't exactly hate it but it still catches him off guard to see them sometimes

- Most of his "hero" work isn't technically the stereotypical stuff a hero would normally do- but it's still very important that he does. He very often goes to protests and volunteers at places wherever he can. He doesn't consider this hero work either, just stuff he wants to do to help out where he can

- The man is an extrovert to his core, he literally will be making friends literally anywhere and half the time the rest of the egos are just like- "what the fuck???" Because none of them are extroverts.

- I think Jackie took a lot longer than Marvin to fall for them than they did. Mostly because mans got horrid issues regarding to letting people seeing him be vulnerable, and it's only when Marvin makes it extremely clear that they're safe to be around that he ends up slowly falling for them. He also admires how they don't particularly care about anyone else's opinions and values taking care of themselves over conforming into what any society says you should be.

-this ones pretty obvious but Jackie is 100% punk

- his day job is being a freelance artist and guitarist in a punk band. He also part times as a bartender (THE MANS IS BUSY AS SHIT.)

-he obviously mains as a guitarist but he does also know how to play bass and drums (he's had to step in for his other band mates occasionally)

Hey!!! Going to throw a couple questions at you as I’m curious to get your take:

1) what’s in the Ralph Special (maybe rum? Or was that rationed)?

2) do you think Ralph and Bim hooked up at one point? (I feel like it would have to be something cringey like at a Christmas party or New Year’s Eve 😆)

3) have you or anyone done Myers-Briggs test for these characters? I feel like Alec and Sandy would be all about it and Ralph would push it off as nonsense but curiosity would get him in the end.

1)  So  Ralph’s special is …….smooth on the palate with (supposedly) a ferocious kick.  Oh rather a good description of him too!  I’m feeling rum is a very strong candidate.  There is that very strong rum he has in his room.  And it’s so strong that when he tries to offer it to Laurie for his knee, and Laurie says not to be silly, he even he pours it back in the bottle.  I love that bit so much!!  So I would agree, and then maybe honey for the palate smoother.

2)  Bim.  I’m now thinking, how could they not have!   And why is everyone so weird about the two of them.  Yes, something embarrassing, like something out of context, or an anonymous encounter and then they met properly and it was like ‘Oh, you!’ or something.  Also this ‘only Ralph can handle him’ is weird.  In my hc, I have Bim as Ralph’s supplier of benzadrene so that would also explain why he’s so helpful all the time, like, must protect the supply…..

3) Myers-Briggs!  OMG!  I am a bit rusty but I remember doing that many many years ago.  I totally agree Alec/Sandy would be loving it, and Ralph……well, there’s that incredible bit in the middle of the ‘two years of women’ when he says “I can't remember who those cranks are who say you mustn't think negatively; but they've got something, you know.” Which I just love.   So I feel Ralph’s got that kind of magpie mind that he would be desperate to know but would brush it off, like, yes I’ll take the test just so I can prove you wrong…..He’s always trying to ‘settle’ things so must be a J over a P though?

Are there any free questionnaire’s online for this?  @carrotcakecrumble do you know anything about this stuff?

But also, I am very interested in Dorothy Rowe’s personal construct theory and her introvert/extravert thing, and I feel Ralph is a strong extravert, in the sense that the outer world is more real to him than his inner world.  The exploration and mapping clinched it for me.  And Laurie seems an extreme introvert, needing his alone time, needing to ‘get his head straight’ and having imaginary conversations.  It’s meant to make them compatible though.

And finally, favourite Alec-isms.  It has to be when he’s not picked up Laurie’s surname and he says

"Oh, by the way, I don't know whether you get a kind of functional deafness during introductions, like me? I never got your name properly; was it -- er -- Hazell, or--?"

And then later, "And what is your name, if you'll forgive my unmannerly persistence?"

Love it, every time.  I get the feeling he is quite socially awkward, but has applied a veneer of polish for his job, and maybe that’s why Laurie is so drawn to him at the party, maybe a kindred spirit?

i feel like thered be a running gag where no one else knows what M.J. stands for whatsoever (mini jackie?? more justice?? who knows!) n i do hc marvin having a cat named babycakes, but hes an absolute ASSHOLE. i also started thinkin of jj having a deaf cat tick and a blind cat named tock :((( - 🎅🏻

‘Babycakes’ is so soft omg. I love the concept of Marvin “miss me w/ that ‘feelings’ bullshit” Magnificent being completely over the moon for his kitty.

I can never settle on names for Marvin’s cat(s). I kind of like Planchette (maybe with another cat named Ouija?) but that’s a little long. I also love him having two cats named Phobos and Deimos, which are the two moons of Mars - this probably works best for a more morally grey or even evil Marvin, bc they literally translate to ‘fear’ and ‘panic’ respectively. IDK I just love him giving his cats ridiculously witchy names and then babying them - and having full conversations with them while he does magic.

TICK AND TOCK AHHHH I’d die for them!! That’s perfect for JJ. The idea of him with cats is so adorable omg.

I feel like the egos sort of naturally fall on a scale of pets like

Jackie: strong preference for dogs

Chase: loves both, but a slight preference for dogs

Jamie: true neutral - loves dogs and cats equally

Henrik: loves both, but a slight preference for cats

Marvin: strong preference for cats

And Anti is the one who’d prefer a more unique pet, like a reptile or a bird. IDK. Also I don’t think Jackie dislikes cats or anything; he def thinks they’re cute and would totally be chill with a partner having one, he just wouldn’t on his own choose one for a pet, and the same is true w/ Marvin and dogs. Whereas Chase and Henrik each have a fav, but if they wanted a pet they’d be open to either (or one of each!). And Jamie just wants as many puppies & kitties around at all times. :)

Time for today's silly question! :D Can you talk about the pets you've given the boys? It feels like it's been a while since you've gotten to talk about them. Hope you're doing well lovely!

You know all those drafts I told you I have, one of them is a whole thing about the pets I never got the nerve to post, but alas here you are asking me things and I'm like. Ok! Because I love you. (btw this isn't like. Oh no now I have to talk about this. It's more like. Thank you for asking because if it wasn’t for you and these asks, which I love, all these little hcs of mine would just die in my drafts without ever seeing the light of day).

Marvin has his familiar, which is a common pied crow named Beann, and a mini rex bunny named Hop. Dont judge his naming skills, ok. His last name literally means Magnificent in Irish sooo.. anyway, Hop actually has an injured leg and can't properly hop, ironic I know, but Marvin didn't know that when he found him so he would encourage him to hop and the bunny would respond well to it. So that became his name. No backstory to Beann’s name, again, it’s a literal translation in Irish. Beann = crow.. Marvin has many talents, naming is not one of them.

Chase has a female German Shepherd named Dudette. He got her as a puppy right after the divorce because he was lonely. He wanted to wait until the kids met her to give her a proper name so he just started calling her Dudette in the meantime. The name just stuck and the kids refused to change it.

Henrik also has a dog, a Weimaraner named Gregory, Greg for short, and a feathertail betta fish name George. We use fancy names in this household. Henrik just fell in love with the dog, honestly. They’re elegant, intelligent, powerful, fast.. stubborn. And George is just a handsome boy.

JakobJackie has a Bluejay he rescued and nursed back to health and then refused to leave his house when he tried to set him free as a pet, so that was fun. No, but seriously, he loves his buddy. His name is Peanut, because he loves them, or Nutty because he is insane. His name depends on his mood that day.

Jameson has a panda ferret named Donut. I know, these boys have a thing for naming their pets after foods. Don't blame me I don't make the rules 😜 ..I just liked the sign for Donut so that’s pretty much all the reasoning behind it. But, fun fact.. actually, it's pretty much just a fact and not fun at all.. but an estimate of 75% of badgers and panda ferrets are deaf, usually because of a genetic defect caused by Waardenburg syndrome. So basically, mute boy, deaf pet.

AidenAnti has reptiles, just.. all of them. There’s not much to it, except they’re all named after knives. The lizards, (a bearded dragon, an iguana, and a gecko) Butcher, Machete, and Bowie. The turtle, yes they have a turtle; Switchblade. The snake, a python, literally just called Knives.

Also. I know I never add the non canon boys but. They also have pets.

Angus has a chinchilla and a, lynx? (maybe), Robbie a rat (named Cheese because, of course) and Shawn has a venus fly trap and a cactus, because no one trusts him to keep a pet alive, and he agrees.

Shawn and JJ HCs

I don’t know what to say except you’ve never met 2 people so different yet so similar in your life

They are the complete opposite to what you’d expect too, and normally hide their actually personalities

Shawn’s a sweetheart that tears up if he smiles too much or gets too happy, but he pretends to be salty and distant because he doesn’t want to be bugged by people constantly

JJ’s actually really serious and if he had the choice he probably wouldn’t smile much, which is a stark contrast to his seemingly chirpy personality and it’s mainly just to be polite

Basically their real personalities are the others fake ones

JJ’s just a fucking Titan at this point and even though he’s shorter than Shawn he’s definitely got Travis’ broad build

And he hates it

Shawn’s a long lanky boi with about 1 ounce of fat on him

They share a room

They both have their wedding rings on permanently

In all fairness as much as JJ’s the serious one and Shawn’s the sweet one JJ will never pass up an opportunity to hug someone because he has big stronk arms that were made for hugs and Shawn still has the worst temper known to man

Unless there’s a child involved

Then Shawn will not under any circumstances stop hugging this child

Jaime tried to teach Shawn to dance once

They ended up on the floor in a big cuddle pile

most people find tall men attractive, and that’s true for Jaime, but there’s nothing attractive about walking into every fucking door frame going Shawn.

Well, it’s not attractive, but it’s still adorable

Shawn’s autistic and you can’t convince me otherwise

That’s partly the reason he worked with fabrics, he likes the feel of them

Shawn and Jaime have appalling handwriting

I don’t think words can express just how protective of eachother they are, and normally any threat they use against others works very effectively because Jaime has The Soldier Glare tm and Shawn is very quick witted

In all fairness it’s only eachother and later Anti that know what their true personalities are

I can’t really say that ones PTSD is worse than the other because what Jaime saw was constant and a permanent image in his head but what Shawn saw was genuinely scary

While Shawn doesn’t sleep much he doesn’t struggle getting to sleep like Jaime does

Once when Jaime couldn’t sleep Shawn just hugged him while he told him about everything he’d seen while he was at war and it basically just ended up with them 2 laughing there asses off at Shawn because Shawn asked him if he’d ever talk again but jaimes like “um you’re deaf mate why do you care” and the conversation ended with Jaime calling Shawn “dense as a rock”

Shawn’s like 36 and already almost completely grey he doesn’t know what’s happening

Jamie’s the 2 youngest with Robbie being the smolest bean

Fuck it I’ll do their ages here in oldest to youngest

Anti doesn’t even have an age any more he just knows he’s somewhere between 2 and 1000 and that’s it

Shawn’s even more confused because henrik’s more stressed than he is yet there’s not a single grey hair on his head

They’re all convinced he colours it though

Once Chases youngest Sophie ran out of the room with wet hair and one of them hooded towels and Shana could tell Chase was struggling so he played with Sophie for ages

He learned more about the modern world from a 3 year old in 30 minutes than he has from fully grown adults in a year

All 3 brothers can/could sing

JJ was weirdly relieved when Shawn started sharing a room with Anti because he’s always scared he’s going to hurt Shawn in his sleep

He still doesn’t like sleeping alone though

26 years of dealing with Shawn Flynn will wear you down to same resting bitch face JJ has

Marvin accidentally summoned about 20 cats that all just threw themselves at Shawn and he was just crying because he loved them and he loves all animals and baby’s and cute things because he’s a child

Jaime spends 2 hours every morning getting ready because hair and moustache

Jaime has 6 tattoos

A deer skull with flowers growing out of it, a rifle with a pocket watch’s chain wrapped around it on his right arm, Jack Hunters dog tag information on his left, angel wings on his back, ‘whisky’ written on his lower back and ‘Shawn Flynn’ on his right wrist

Shawn has “Jameson Jackson” on his left wrist

Tom and Jaime rant about Shawn’s stupidity on the daily

Shawn, Jaime and Jackie are literally the only tall ones

Anti’s like 5 foot

Jaime will literally write an entire musical in 3 hours just because he’s bored

Jaime’s a morning person

Shawn is the farthest thing from it

Jaime’s cursed like 2 times in whole life and will scold anyone who curses around him

Shawn swears like a sailor and it drives JJ insane

Are you surprised the times JJ cursed they were at Shawn?

Jaime has a half sister somewhere too

She’s also Irish

He can’t escape them

Long story short, Jaime has like 50 siblings somewhere or another and Shawn’s literally the only one he talks to

Shawn rolls his eyes that much Jaime suspects he knows what the inside of his head looks like better than his own appearance

Jaime has a girlfriend that know one knows about

Well I mean obviously Marshall knows because it’s Marshall but he can keep secrets so it’s fine

If you can understand him, the things Shawn says in his sleep will either scare the hell out of you or make you laugh your ass off. There is no in between.

Jaime swears he’s the only straight ego in the house

The weird thing is Shawn doesn’t even look old, he doesn’t have any wrinkles or anything, which makes his hair even more confusing

Do not. Let either of them. Near chocolate.

They will inhale that shit in seconds

Neither of them really leave the house much just because the world confuses them

Jaime is on social media a lot? Probably because he doesn’t really consider it talking

No one can figure out Jaime’s mutism, because he makes no effort to stay quiet if he’s laughing or making any other sort of noise, he just refuses to talk

Jaime can use magic, but it’s more cartoon physics than the big flashy stuff Marvin can do

Shawn and Jaime know each other’s boundaries

Said boundaries are not calling your younger brother ‘discount Charlie Chaplin’ and not calling your older brother ‘elongated spud’

Outside of that there is no insult they won’t throw at each other

That being said, don’t try to get involved or something will end up broken, and it will be you

Do not under any circumstances start a fight with either of them

Jaime’s a pacifist, but his fights will either disarm or kill you

Shawn will never back down from a fight, and after years of running through the studio he’s very light on his feet. He’s not necessarily strong, but you’ll struggle landing a hit on him

And they’ll back each other up, so on one end you’ve got a big burly soldier that could probably squash you between his fingers and on the other a hot headed wippet

Just don’t do it

Jaimes skin, aside form his scars, is perfect

Shawn, on the other hand, has acne scars, freckles, birthmarks, the whole fucking lot

Jaime’s good at slight of hand and any form of card game, but Shawn can and will beat you at any and all games as long as it’s not a video game

The only person who has ever come close to beating Shawn is lacie

Shawn really likes stars? Like JJ thinks they’re pretty and stuff but Shawn adores them and he loves constellations and stuff

Neither of them are religious just because Shawn’s dad was a really heavy catholic and they hated it

It seems to be a reoccurring pattern that not one of the brothers accents faded. Shawn’s didn’t just because he’s deaf, but Jaime has always had a British accent and Travis has always had an Irish accent, even though they’ve both lived in America for most of they’re lives

I’m going with the HC that Shawn’s Charley from the Butcher Gang so he has a pretty bad limp but he’s sort of learned to ignore it? Like if he needs to defend himself from something he can literally just shut off the pain until it’s over but then it hurts like hell afterwards

Other than that it’s not really that much of a problem other than not being able to walk for as long the others and not being able to ‘switch it off’ when he wants, it’s just sort of a reaction he has to extreme situations, like adrenaline almost

They both have shit eye sight, hence JJ’s monocle (which he only wears if he wears a vest, which is normally only in winter)

Shawn broke his glasses once and he had to tie one of Jack Hunter’s hair ties around the middle and he just never took it off

Motorbikes were cheaper and easier to get back then and Shawn needed a quick way to get to work but he actually really liked it because it was fast and he’s a child

Anti brought him one for his birthday

Jaime fucking hates it

It’s dangerous, loud, takes up space, there’s no seat belt, and Shawn doesn’t wear a helmet

Not that he’s scared of going on it or anything

He swears

Jaime always hides his tattoos

He sleeps face down to stop him from waking up Shawn by screaming

Jaime’s friends with Henrik now and sees him as more of a brother than the enemy, but Shawn hates him with a passion just because he A) hates doctors because the one who visited his mum fucked up and she probably wouldn’t have died as young as she did if the doctor focused and B) associates his accent with the fuckers that gave his brother PTSD, why wouldn’t he?

That being said Henrik really has to watch his volume because Jaime is silent in every way and you don’t really know when he’s going to turn up behind you so if he shouts in German then Jaime will end up having an anxiety attack and Shawn will slap him up

Never in your life have to met anyone as sarcastic as Jaime. He’s British and Shawn was his main influence growing up, what else did you expect

They live off cornflakes. Religiously.

Shawn loves kids

Jaime doesn’t even really sleep on the bed anymore, he just sleeps on a mixture of Shawn’s chest and Shawn’s thousands of Teddy’s

Deaf Jackie HCs

Shut up I know the comics are out but mine hasn’t shipped yet so I’m over here just riding the flow of JSE creativity ok

My awesome friend @itsonlyparker reminded me of my deaf Jackie HC and so I wanna jot down some ideas to write at some point. I’ll put them under the cut so I don’t clog your feeds

Either he lost his hearing in an accident or he was born deaf

He’s only got about 20% of his hearing left, and that’s evenly divided between his left and right ears

He modified his hearing aids to chirp at specific frequencies for different things

He refuses to let Marvin use magic to fix his hearing

He is aware of specific frequencies in his surroundings, because he can sense the radio waves of the frequencies

He can read lips but he’d prefer to sign or use his aids so his hands are free (only exception is sharing inside jokes with JJ)

Yes, he can’t hear too well, but “hearing is overrated” (his words) because he can simply rely on his other senses to help him in a fight

On that note, the only time he really wears his hearing aids are when he’s on patrol or meeting new people. Around the other egos he doesn’t wear them

Anti’s tried to surprise attack him before, but his nature disrupts the air around him, leading to Jackie pinning him before he can get close

When Jackie first met JJ, he worried that the silent man somehow knew he was deaf, not realising that JJ was nonverbal.

He can read Morse code. It’s difficult to configure his aids to simulate the frequency needed for Morse, but he understands the written dots and dashes

Playing off the “lost his hearing in an accident” idea: when he lost his hearing, he panicked, but Chase and Henrik helped him to adapt to his situation and now he barely worries

In terms of “being born deaf”: Jackie refused to go to a specialist school until he got to secondary school, after he was suspended for beating someone up because he misread their lips.

He’s practiced imitating mouth shapes and therefore can speak almost completely clearly. Learning new words is difficult.

Some New HCs for Marvin and JBM

Jackie was quite deaf before an incident caused him to regain about 75% of his hearing
