Yesterday I saw this tweet quoting a list of the ‘ao3 ship stats of 2023’ and they were talking about how out of 100 ships, the list only had 27 women total. Then someone said that couldn’t simply be just misogyny, and another person said they had seen others explaining they mostly ship male characters because women are badly written/under developed, and I mean… Please, that’s such bullshit! It made me sad, and also it made me think of these characters we’ve been loving for so long and despite them being written by men, and sometimes being BADLY written or written ooc, they’re still so important and it’s so worth exploring their layers and giving them voice. I just wish female fic writers would step up and write about ourselves, write characters we can relate, flesh them out—we’re in 2024, ffs! How can we blame men for not writing women well and then just dedicate our time and creativity to write this so called interesting fictional men we have love or whatever? Sorry, I know this sounds more angsty than anything but it really pissed me off. We need to stop calling male blorbos “baby girl” and start writing and voicing real baby girls!!! (That obviously includes wlw relationships!) That’s why I love this blog so much, btw. That’s why when I thought of venting about it I thought: oh, she would understand! Oh wow, that's crazy. But also... unsurprising. So that's 27 total women out of 200 characters/individuals? Jesus. I'm not terribly versed in modern fandom (or even, like, old fandom, really) but male characters have historically been babied and loved on more. I don't really get it. A huge chunk of that is they were created and crafted by men and those stories come from a patriarchal perspective. How shows/stories shape and shift can really define how things are written moving forward and it's frankly true that audiences are much more harsh about the fallibility of female characters than they are of their male counterparts. I personally think it stems from men being generally terrible irl so people take male characters and run with them because it's safe and comforting rather than dealing with the reality of dudes irl.

Names:

Lois is Sam Lane Jr. for obvious reasons (her father always wanted a son and I think he would totally jump at the chance to name one after himself). For similarly obvious reasons (Lois does not like her dad and wants to form her own individual identity) AMAB Lois would go by his middle name Louis.

Bruce is named Elizabeth because it is feels regal and old fashioned and it is the name of the spouse of Robert the Bruce (Scottish king who popularized the name).

Bruce is nicknamed Barbie instead of Beth/Betty because I read it once in the tags of this anonymous fic and it has been stuck in my head ever since.

Misc:

I am torn between Louis being named Sam Lane Jr and him being trans masc bc oh man that would be very cool and interesting. So he has top surgery scars in the above doodle. I think he'd also have bottom surgery and being fairly stealth in his day to day life.

Louis didn't care at all about Elizabeth/Barbie until he started suspecting her of being The Bat and no he is unhealthily obsessed.

Barbie is unfortunately obsessed back and tried to turn Louis off her scent by leaning into the ditzy persona and trying to show how busy she must be with her parties and charity work etc. That only backfired bc she's like "oh no he's hot and smart" and because Louis immediately noticed the holes in her story and was now close enough often enough that she noticed how Barbie's injuries lined up with the Bat's

I just realized that Barbie looks like Diana here bc of the colouring. Oops. My iPads dead now tho so I ain't gonna fix it (edit: just changed her dress to blue. Red version is still there in the red background variant)

Barbie wouldn't be able to get away with wearing full coverage outfits as much as her male version would. I'm not sure how that would be rectified

What do you think about bruce wayne?

that is such a broad question… but i guess i rarely talk about bruce specifically, in isolation. and i love bruce dearly, despite despite despite… despite the fact that it took me so long to get there even, because for years of reading dc comics he was a nuance to me. but i am now tremendously interested in bruce wayne. i have a soft spot for pre-crisis bruce, his geniality and zest, that easy affection. but i’m also interested in bruce of the “dark” post-crisis era, and where their personalities meet at…

so i’m interested in bruce wayne who took the idea of “grief work” too literally. in how he invented a myth for his tikkun olam and did it wrong. and hence in a myth that grows hungry and implicates others in tragic cycles. in bruce wayne whose kindness makes him project on people that would be better off without it. all to say, i’m mostly interested in how batman sees a man, dead in crime alley and thinks: that could be me. my beginning and my probable end. and who ought to rectify that opinion later, by admitting he thought he’d be a victim of his own mission, but it was his son instead.

his biggest trouble: he perfected the vigilante-civilian lives compartmentalisation, but it lasted no longer than a few years, only for his newly-found family members to enter the picture and mess his brilliant system of identity split… because with children, there’s no dichotomy - they will be his in cowl and out of it, and there will be a price to pay. and bruce realises that, when his abandonment issues also come into play - when he pushes his sons away to protect them from a life of his own invention.

i want these narratives to be complex; i want stories in which his love, just as his grief, gets ugly. and his grief, just as his love, becomes graceful and merciful. however that quote went, about being like gd -- loving everything/everyone and therefore nearly no one/nothing. not a comparison too out of place, since the whole world bends to his personal story.

but i also want the real, breathing thing, ordinary. i want bruce wayne a socialite that truly enjoys high society, as per old canon, that bristol man who drags his body through gotham whole, one with it and yet separated through the numbers in his bank account. i’m interested in bruce wayne rich and a rehabilitationist and therefore worryingly liberal-leaning-conservative. bruce wayne and his stupid, soft robes, and reading glasses, and barbecue parties, and that mini-golf in his WE office, having all of that while playing an every-man.

but that doesn’t answer the question, does it- i suppose what i think of bruce wayne is that: he’s wrong about nearly everything but that love matters. and he's most compelling when put in opposition to leslie, who reads him like an open book and thinks of him: a monster of her own.

You ever get annoyed about waking up from an interesting dream?

Last night's special featured a brand new d-list villain in the dc universe called kilogram. His beef was with the lack of metric system in the US and to rectify that he decided to go and steal the reference meter and kilogram that French sent to the US way back when it first became independent.

Those reference measures never made the trip because some English privateers robbed the ship. The measures are in the British museum these days.

Coming back to the plot of the dream, Kilogram was just doing a heist of the measures from the British museum and the Batfam team (that was in London for some reason) was getting ready to stop him while arguing about the situation.
