My thoughts on the WANNA ONE lineup
From a Seoul-living Korean American Piece of P101S2 Trash who cried when she found out she couldnāt go to the final performance:
First of all, as an unfaltering Jaehwan Stan since Episode 1, I was thrilled. I actually burst into tears when they announced him as 4th place. And overall, the lineup isnāt bad. Thereās a balance of positions, and a variety of people: big companies, small companies, and no companies.
Letās just start in the order that they were announced.
Bae Jinyoung wasnāt my top pick, or even within my Top 11, but he is incredibly hard working and has the smallest face on the show. Heās got a really unique voice, and has improved tremendously in his singing and dancing. Though a bit shocked and fearful of how the rest of the group would play out, I was really happy for him. Besides, his position as center in āHands on Meā was really fitting. I was impressed.
Hwang Minhyun. Wellā¦ hereās the thing about the Nu'est members: if none make it, Na.Pros will be outraged, but if too many make it, theyāll also be angry. Though Iād have expected Jonghyun to also make the cut, Minhyun has been fortunate enough to be in groups in which many of the members made the final cut as well. Aside from that, Minhyunās dashing good looks and beautiful vocal color were very memorable to the Korean public. He also had an advantage, having debuted before and gained a considerable amount of publicity. Though it didnāt save his band mates, these factors managed to save Minhyun. And Iām truly happy for him, though it did break my heart to see him upset at the end of the episode.
Yoon Jisung. Yoon Jisung is extremely hard working and talented, and Iām happy that he made it. Many of my friends made him their fixed pick because of his bubbly personality and his strong leadership shown in the position evaluations. Heās a great contribution to the group dynamic in terms of humor and variety, and would be a strong asset when on other reality shows or televised interviews. Additionally, he and Ong Sungwoo have a great dynamic.
Lai Guanlin. Some say this was rigged, and perhaps it was. However, I still think heās a necessary part of the group. His rapping skills were never particularly bad, and have improved immensely as the season progressed. And although his dancing isnāt perfect yet, heās learned a lot. Heās starting to develop an onstage charisma that some of the more experienced trainees have, and the fact that he knows many languages (three, if Iām not mistaken) will be vital when promoting in foreign countries.
Park Woojin. Iām very biased towards Park Woojin. Though at first I was a bit taken aback at how strong his appearance was (with the eyebrows, the snaggletooth, etc) but after seeing his self-introduction, I fell deep and hard. As of right now, heās probably my #4, so I was elated to see him at 6th place. Honestly, he has so much going for him: top-notch rap skills, and out-of-this-world dancing. He is truly the dark horse of this season, and has so much to contribute to the group. And though Iām usually not the kind of person, āsexy baby, oh my ladyā was listened to by me probably a million times.
Ong Sungwoo is my eleven-year-old brotherās fixed pick. He loves Ong Sungwoo, and for good reason too. Sungwoo definitely has charisma, variety, talent, and everything else an idol may need. His slate, āGet Uglyā face, and āė°°ź³ ķģā made him funny and relatable, while his company performance (and all of his other performances) reminded Na.Pros that he was extremely skilled. His face is also a face that is hard to forget, making it easy for people to point him out (which is an asset for idols). Because he stands out, he can help his group stand out as well.
Ah, Kim Jaehwan. My fixed pick from day one. In my completely honest but very biased opinion, a group isnāt good without a good main vocal. And a group isnāt great without a great main vocal. Lucky for WANNA ONE, Kim Jaehwan is an outstanding vocal. And although I wasnāt quite sure of that during the Individual Traineesā āHey Mama,ā I was sure of it after Jaehwanās āSkyfall.ā And though his dancing skills lacked significantly (especially in the beginning), he was able to show that through hard work, anything can be done. Even without a company.
Lee Daehwi. I wasnāt even surprised. He can produce, sing, dance, and has an incredible stage presence. After becoming the first icon of the season, there was no way for this boy not to make the debut line. After all, he was unique in appearance and aura, and had an incomparable charisma: one that just glows with confidence and self-esteem. I know heāll do great in WANNA ONE, and Iām confident that Rhymer wonāt have to worry about hate messages now. But did he ever?
Park Jihoon actually came as a surprise to me. I expected him to be first place, despite last weekās rankings. For some reason, I just assumed that the Na.Pros preferred a pretty boy over someone with a more manly appeal (and they usually doā¦ take Cha Eunwoo for example). But perhaps the Na.Pro wanted a boyband with a sexy concept, or just really liked Daniel. Nonetheless, although he was not given many opportunities to be the actual center of a lot of things, he was always overflowing with energy and that showed through onstage. And his catchphrases have become nationwide. Heās got the idol impact, for sure.
Kang Daniel is honestly so attractive and Iām really happy for him. Not because heās attractive, but because he has matured a lot as the season progressed. By being the leader of āGet Uglyā and āOpen Up,ā he was able to learn through the successes and mistakes he encountered, and became a really balanced and capable artist by the last episode. In the second episode, he was struggling to hit the notes in āėģ¼ ė,ā but completely nailed the Sub Vocal 1 position in āHands on Me.ā All of the concepts suit him, and I think he will handle the center position very well.
And finally, Ha Sungwoon. Ha Sungwoon didnāt really catch my eye until the position evaluations, where I discovered that he had a beautiful voice. I had sort of skimmed through Episode 2, so I never actually watched the Ardor and Able evaluation, only the portion where Noh Taehyun is krumping. Nonetheless, since starting to like him, I rooted for him, but only in an underdog āitād be a miracle if he makes the next roundā kind of way. But then, I watched videos of him promoting with HOTSHOT, and it made me so sad to think that someone with this much potential could have been so underrated and unnoticed. Then, prior to the second elimination, there was a cut of him volunteering to perform āNeverā first, and that is when I realized that this is all he has. Without this opportunity, HOTSHOT may disband and he may never be able to perform again. And this is very similar to a lot of groups, and perhaps even the Nu'est boys. But seeing him work so hard moved me and thousands of Na.Pros to voting for him. At the time, you could pick two members, so I chose him and Jaehwan, and he remains my #2. He has everything: dance skills, vocal versatility, good looks, and can fill whatever position is needed of him in WANNA ONE.
I know many people people are upset about Samuel, Jonghyun, and Dongho, and I am sad as well. They are all incredibly talented boys, and all of them deserve to debut. I am glad to hear that Samuel has some impressive debut plans ahead of him, and hope that Nu'est will also have that opportunity. However, I hate seeing comments about replacing a confirmed member with one of the previously mentioned, or about not supporting WANNA ONE because their favorite trainee has been eliminated.
The thing about reality shows is that theyāre rigged. There is absolutely no way for Na.Pros to perfectly, expertly select trainees to fill every position and every aspect needed. Of course itās rigged. Without Lai Guanlin, the rest of Asia (particularly China and Taiwan) may not support WANNA ONE. Or without Kim Jaehwan or Ha Sungwoon, the group wouldnāt have the vocal support that they need. Or, in other instances, talented trainees like Jung Sewoon or Samuel are perhaps best left out of WANNA ONE so that they can do better things. Though Iām not sure about Sewoon, Samuel has plans for a solo debut, and I think Sewoon should too and follow in the footsteps of his Starship predecessors (like Yu Seungwoo). Jung Sewoon shared my #2 with Ha Sungwoon, so seeing them as the two people for the eleventh spot was just terrible. But all things considered, Sungwoon more closely fits the idol image, whereas Jung Sewoon would make an amazing soloist.
I know a lot of people are still distraught over the eliminations of Samuel and the Pledis boys, but truth be told, too many Pledis members wouldāve ruined WANNA ONEās popularity among its target audience (yes, Korean people), and Samuel, perhaps as a result of unspoken racism or just lack of people choosing him as their fixed pick, just wasnāt very popular among Na.Pros. It sucks, it really does, and the result wouldāve been different if chosen by international fans, but we need to take into account that although K-Pop is becoming a global trend, it ultimately must appeal to its home country and citizens to continue to promote K-Pop to the world as culturally Korean, and not as the result of a lot of foreign countries pitching in to determine what Korean culture should be like.
I will miss Jung Sewoon, Kim Jonghyun, Kang Dongho, Lim Youngmin, Ahn Hyungseob, Yu Seonho, Kim Samuel, Joo Haknyeon, and Choi Minki, and despite my disappointment at some not making the final cut, I will continue to support and cheer on WANNA ONE. Please support them with me.
Thank you for reading.

They do get busy! So I write about the festivals during the season as well as whatās trendy around town, whatās going on, whatās new. Thereās a lot during the holidays. Oooh, that sounds like fun. Which was your favorite?
Do things get busy for you towards the end of the year at the Times, or just when things happen around town? I had a fun time myself, no haunted houses, but I caught some of the classic Halloween movies at Stubs and hit up a cemetery tour since I'm not as much of a fan of the spooky stuff.

Slipping Into The Diamond Life: A Beginner's Guide To Seventeen
So you've heard of Seventeen, maybe even liked a few of their songs, but are afraid of stanningĀ such a bigĀ group. You might have also heard this buzz about them being the only group featured on the show "One Fine Day" twice. You're curious, but you aren't sure where to start. No fear! This WTKĀ CaratĀ will guide you so that you can cascadeā I mean slipā into the Diamond Life. I have come up with thirteen steps to "Boom Boom" your way to becoming an official Carat. Let's begin! Step 1: Know the Basics Seventeen is a self-producingĀ idol group from Pledis Entertainment. They write their own songs, compose, and create their own choreography. Seventeen has thirteen members. Their name comes from having thirteen members, three sub-units, and one overall team. The sub-units are the Vocal Team, Hip-Hop Team, and the Performance Team. Seventeen debuted on May 26th, 2015, with an hour-long showcase. Carats got their name from their song "Shining Diamonds" which was their unofficial debut song. Carats were born on February 14th, 2016, during their Boys Wish concert. Step 2: Their MVs Check out this link for an amazing playlist of all of Seventeen's MVs and songs. Step 3: Their Shows Reality Shows: 17 T.V. This is their pre-debutĀ show where they play games, perform plays, practice, and share in antics. Note that there were more members back then! 17 ProjectĀ This is their debut show where they must go through missions and challenges in order to debut! 13 Castaway Boys/One Fine DayĀ Here the boys thought they were going to have a very nice (pun intended) vacation, but they soon learn they're stranded! Where is my Friend's Island?Ā They go to Jejuā Seungkwan's hometown! 5 Ducks: The Ranking is up to MeĀ Seventeen ranks products. Variety Shows: Weekly Idol The Qmentary MTV Idols of Asia Step 4: Know The Members
Choi SeungcheolĀ (S.Coups)-Ā He is the leader of Seventeen and is well known for taking care of his members. Big and sultry eyes? Yep, that's S.Coups. Can't miss him. He is also the leader of the Hip-Hop Team. Fun Fact: S.Coups' name comes from his own name plus the phrase "Coup d'etat" which is French for "a blow against the State."
Yoon Jeonghan-Ā FormerlyĀ the long haired member, Jeonghan is known as Seventeen's angel. Now all you have to do to spot him is to look for the guy with the 90's boy band cut and the perfectly symmetrical face, and you've found him! He is a sub-vocal on the Vocal Team. Fun Fact: Jeonghan is known for getting the other members to do things for him.
Joshua/Jisoo Hong-Ā As one of the American members, one might think his Korean isn't up to par, but that can't be furhter from the truth. Known as the "Gentleman" of the group, you can find him by his big doe eyes, cross earring, and polite smile. He is a sub-vocalĀ on the Vocal Team. Fun Fact: He doesn't like ramen that much.
Wen Junhui (Jun)-Ā Jun is one of the Chinese members and is a stunning visual. You can recognize his long protrudingĀ nose (more noticeable in his profile), and if you see some shenanigans in the background, it's usually him. He is the lead dancer in the Performance Team. Fun Fact:Ā He can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese, as well as Korean.
Kwon Soonyoung (Hoshi)-Ā He is one of the many jokers of the group. Known as "10:10" because his eyes point in the 10:10 directions on a clock, he is the member with both sexiness and aegyo. He is the leader of the Performance Team. Fun Fact:Ā He is the biggest SHINee fanboy.
Jeon Wonwoo-Ā Though he may look intimidating onstage, in reality, he's an adorable puff. You will know him by his deep voice and piercing stare. He is a lead rapper in the Hip-Hop Team. Fun Fact: He is afraid of dogs, though it's uncertain if it's just big dogs.
Lee Jihoon (Woozi)-Ā The shortest member of the group (5'4-5'5) and the producer. He composes and writes most of the lyrics for their songs. You can't miss him really, everyone towers over him. He is the leader of the Vocal Team. Fun Fact: He can play the clarinet, drums, piano, and the guitar.
Lee Seokmin (Dokyeom/DK)-Ā Considered to be one of the best voices of Seventeen, DK is known to be a powerhouse vocal. With a long face and a dashing smile, you might have a hard time looking away. He is the main vocalist of the Vocal Team. Fun Fact: His favorite music style is rock.
Kim Mingyu. Mingyu is the unofficial visual of the group (no official visual has been stated). As the tallest member, you won't be able to miss him. He is the lead rapper of the Hip-Hop Team. Fun Fact: He loves doing his members' hair.
Xu Minghao (The 8)-Ā The other half of the China Line, The 8 is known for his B-boying and martial arts skills. With pointy ears and a precious smile it's no wonder he's known as the "Fairy." He is the Lead Dancer on the Performance Team. Fun Fact: His favorite season is summer.
Boo Seungkwan. Another powerhouse singer, Seungkwan has the pipes to please. Known for his high cheekbones and sass, you'll have a hard time not finding him in the group. He is a main vocalist of the Vocal Team. Fun Fact: He is allergic to tomatoes.
Choi Hansol (Vernon)-Ā Being half-Korean and half-German/French-American, Vernon's looks often get compared to a young Leonardo DiCaprio. With smoldering eyes and a wolf-like smile, he'll either be your bias or bias wrecker. He is the main rapper of the Hip-Hop Team. Fun Fact: Of all the members, he is theĀ one who gets scared the easiest.
Lee Chan (Dino)-Ā As the maknae, one would expect him to just be cute, but Dino is way more than that. With a chiseled jawline and dance moves thatĀ Michael JacksonĀ could be proud of, Dino is hard to miss. He is the Main Dancer of the Performance Team. Fun Fact: Both of his parents are dancers, and his father opened a dance studio and taught Dino how to dance. Step 5: Friends of Seventeen DK, Mingyu, and The 8 are a part of the '97 Line group chat with GOT7's BamBam and Yugyeom, NCT's Jaehyun, and BTS' Jungkook.Ā Samuel, a former Seventeen trainee who is now a contestant on Produce 101, has maintained a friendship with the group. Ailee is Woozi's longtime friend from their trainee days. MonstaX and Seventeen have been friends since Seventeen's debut and even played basketball together. Seventeen lost. Joshua and V from BTS share the same birthday and have formed a friendship from it. BTS and Seventeen have a low-key friendship, but their fans know they admire one another. Suga and Woozi will even copy each other's wardrobe. Nu'est and Seventeen go way back to their trainee days. Newly debuted groupĀ PristinĀ has been friends with Seventeen and even performed together in their trainee periods. Chanyeol of EXO and WooziĀ formed a friendship in the studio due to the fact that they both love creating music. Look-alikes idols Jun and Heechul of Super JuniorĀ formed a friendship when everyone noticed their striking resemblance. GFRIEND and Seventeen have a lasting stage friendship with more than one performance together. Step 6: Inside Jokes To wake up Hoshi, one must say "Hoshi fighting!" And he'll wake up screaming "Fighting!" Jeonghan: Dino nugu aegi? (Whose baby are you)? Dino: *sighs* Jeonghan's baby. Anytime Joshua says his last name, all his members yell "Hong!" "Hong!" Can't find Jun in an interview or during a broadcast? That's because he's been covered by the logo again. Jeonghan is known as the "Angel" because the spelling of his birthday (10/04) sounds like the word angel in Korean. However, Jeonghan is not always an angel since he pranked The 8 once by telling him to pay with abalones rather than money. Kimbap Kidding BooSeokSoon, the gag trio Seventeen pre-school "Why does chicken heal your heart?" "Drink water" Thughao...IMMA! Woozi with a guitar is dangerous. Mingyu is actually Mingeww. He is always coughing and sneezing with no tissues. Carats=Carrots Dokyeom's horse Jeonghan's giraffe DK's pigeon Wonwoo's Beast dance cover And tons more! If you have watched those videos in steps two and three, you'll know these jokes. Step 7: The Memes Step 8: Get To Know The Fandom Chat with other Carats, and tell them all about your bias(es). "No injuries," Jamie grinned. He gave Sam a thumbs up. "Oh me neither, and it's still early enough that there's still some time here to explore. I don't really have any idea what I wanna do the rest of the night so, I just decided to leave it up to fate," he said. "I'm gonna put my bet on it most likely being a costume. Hopefully." He nodded towards the sidewalk. "Work's been keeping you busy lately then?"
"Guess I should've taken three steps away from the lamppost. But, lucky for you, no injuries," Sam said, chuckling as he made an act of patting himself and checking for injuries, ending with an overly enthusiastic thumbs up as he gave a small grin. He nodded when Jamie said they'd go the opposite direction. "Terrific idea. I'm not in any hurry to get an early stress from trying to figure out whether someone is actually injured or it's just fake blood."

āYouāre uhhhā¦ closer to the lamppost?ā Jamie said with a laugh. He wasnāt really sure but it was the first thing that came to mind. Didnāt make much sense but they could laugh a bit. āI promise if you get injured I will take full responsibility,ā he smirked. Squinting in that direction, he gave a nod. āThen that just means we have to go in the opposite direction.ā
"Definitely fits the theme," he grinned. "Wait. Why I'm the one spinning?" he replied with a laugh but gave a nod anyway, "If I get injured, I'm blaming you," he joked, then closed his eyes and spun to the left. He stopped after a few seconds and opened an eye to check the direction. "Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Town Hall is that way. I'm not heading to work four hours early," he let out another laugh then smirked at Jamie, "Your turn...?"
