jessica jones rewatch review
so, ive just finished rewatching jessica jones because my disney+ access has ended. this will contain spoilers for the entire show.
disclaimer: i last watched it a few years ago with my mom and loved it back then, and my memory of it post season 1 was kind of blurry except for some central plot elements, and that i really disliked hogarth and trish towards the end.
so. season 1 was the best in terms of overall plot, character development, vibe, and consistency in my opinion. the best story and definitley also the best villain, kilgrave fucking slaps as a bad guy.
jessica in general is an awesome character, and has never really left my top three. i love her development, her personality, and her writing most of the time. she tries to live her life and take care of herself, but also helps the little guy when its not a wasted effort, and when she makes mistakes and ends up hurting people the reason is human error, not maliciousness or disinterest in other people, and she generally takes responsibility for her actions.
that said, sometimes her writing is lazy or just bad in order for the plot to happen, but unfortunately thats always a problem that exists.
after that, i have some thoughts. in general, i dont really see the narrative point of many of the side stories in the last two seasons. they only barely had anything to do with the main story (especially hogarths arcs), so that was kind of just exhausting to watch, because i genuinely dislike hogarth and, as i said, there kind of was no point to her scenes most of the time for the main narrative, which didnt make it better. the same is true for the sheer amount of sex scenes. in general i dont have a problem with those, but here they were just redundant in terms of plot most of the time, there were way too many of them especially with that in mind, and because of that there was no value added to the show by them. it felt more like filler, or trying to achieve the rating of the show.
what annoyed me the most was how almost every single main character on the show, with the exception of jessica, became so goddamn unlikeable. the side characters were mostly fine (costa, griffin, oscar, etc.), but trish, hogarth, and malcolm were hard to tolerate later on. thats partially due to the genre of the show and what themes are explored there, but its difficult to sympathize with the characters enough to keep watching for 13 episodes per season, when all they do is manipulate and screw each other over constantly, with almost no redeeming qualities or real consequences for their actions, and im not sure whether id call that a good writing decision. that whole situation is a toxic mess and i really hope jessica found some better people after the show ended.
beyond that obviously the female characters were all deep and complicated people, which is one of my favourite things about this show, but i also really wish that some of them werent written as assholes past season 1.
so yeah, those are my thoughts. still one of my favourite shows of all time, but man do i wish the writing had been kinder in season 2 and 3. really hope jessica will be back in daredevil born again or a future show/movie.
Edit: also im mad that oscar and the potential of a genuinely positive relationship with a good person for jessica, that was built up the entire second season, was immediatley taken away at the start of the third season.

20 questions for fic writers!
I was tagged by @firebatvillain :D!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
I have 148 works on AO3
2. Whatâs your total AO3 word count?
I have 740,203 words in total. I added 59,061 words this year
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Supernatural (TV 2005) (32) Naruto (16) Doctor Who (12) Interview with the Vampire (TV 2022) (11) Black Clover - Tabata Yuki (Anime & Manga) (10) The Avengers (Marvel Movies) (8) Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies) (8) Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms (8) Tennis no Oujisama | Prince of Tennis (7) Banana Fish (Anime & Manga) (7) Sherlock (TV) (7) Teen Wolf (TV) (5) My Hero Academia (Anime & Manga) (5) Spider-Man (Movies - Raimi) (4) Hawaii Five-0 (2010) (3) Death Note (Anime & Manga) (3) X-Men (Movieverse) (3) xxxHoLic (2) Whitechapel (TV) (2) Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle (2) Star Trek (2) Captain America (Movies) (2) Hannibal (TV) (2) Pacific Rim (Movies) (2) One Piece (Anime & Manga) (1) CSI: NY (1) Spider-Man - All Media Types (1) The Venture Bros (1) Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon | Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Anime & Manga) (1) Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits (Anime) (1) Suite Life on Deck (1) My Life in Film (TV) (1) Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (1) Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle (1) Daredevil (TV) (1) Gundam 00 (1) Vampire Chronicles Series - Anne Rice (1) Star Trek: The Next Generation (1)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Our Soulmate Academia (BnHA (MHA)) - 355
Pain (Banana Fish (manga!verse)) - 280
Crush (SuperWolf (SPN/Teen Wolf (MTV))) - 256
A Gift (Avengers (MCU)/Daredevil (Netflix)) - 219
Best Laid Plans (Banana Fish (manga!verse)) - 203
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I always respond because it seems like the polite thing to do especially now that people don't leave as many comments as they used to back the 00's on ff.net
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
You Can't Stay Blind - (SuperWho (SPN/Doctor Who)) - the Eleventh Doctor runs into Crowley who's wearing a too familiar face
In the Pasture of a Vale (Supernatural) - Dean runs into Adam and Ben five years post-season 5 (written back in 2010)
7. Whatâs the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
 I think I always end up with a kind of mixed emotion ending like Best Laid Plans or Our Soulmate Academia, so it's difficult to remember the truly happy ones. The most recent happy ending would be The Mystery in the Fog (ACD!Holmes) where Holmes and Watson end up at the same secret wedding of an underground queer club they're both members of unbeknownst to each other and have some revelations
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Sometimes I do. The most infamous incident was the time I wrote a fic speculating on who Castiel's vessel might have been before I got to Jimmy's episode in my binge watch back in the day. The reviewer went into gruesome detail on how I was going to burn in Hell for my fic. It was unreal. I just deleted the fic and then went on to write several more SPN fics as you do.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I've written smut a handful of times for fics and more often than that for RP since that's part of the RP culture I fell into in university. Most of my smut fics have been orphaned now, but the one that remains is Swallow My Fang at Night Island (Interview with the Vampire (AMC)) I approach smut like I approach fight scenes so I can keep track of the flow of action. I keep my own personal kinks out of it and try to write a scene I think the audience would look for instead
10. Do you write crossovers? Whatâs the craziest one youâve written?
I've written 15 crossovers. I enjoy them tbh. In terms of plot, the craziest one I wrote was Distortion (BBC Sherlock/My Life in Film) where Jones was hired to play Moriarty and things get way too real. In terms of titles crossed over, the craziest one is probably The Hokage (Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle/Naruto)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yes, ages ago. It's why I'm my own beta reader or Kitty Britpicks me because I can trust her
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I had some requests but I've never been alerted to the final products
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
My brother and I regularly cowrote fics together when I was in high school and he was in middle school. If you ever read a Trigun script-based crack fic in the 00's with the phrase "Love and peace! Doves and geese! Change the world!" or "Another carnival ride with cotton candy," that was us.
14. Whatâs your all time favourite ship?
I don't think I actually have one because I'm a multi-shipper and I have so many favorites. That said, it might be inuyasha/Kagome since I always had an Inuyasha fic in rotation (usually more than one though) from 2001 - 2007 or so. Unfortunately they've all been lost to time. According to my AO3 relationship toggle in the filters sidebar, it's Destiel (7) and Devil's Minion (7)
15. Whatâs a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have a BnHA fic from before we learned what Hagukure's powers were where she sent Class-A and Aizawa back in time to Yagi's high school years to do a kind of Tenchi in Love (1996) type of plot where they had to stop a time traveler from murdering Yagi. I wrote quite a bit of it but it stalled on me when Midoriy and Nana interacted and I wasn't completely sure how to get that to work
16. What are your writing strengths?
The most consistent thing I get complimented on are my fight sequences, which is why it's sad I lost all my IY fics because I wrote so many fights for them
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
My memory is a sieve and some of the holes are too big
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've done it before because I was a weeb and it was a trend in the 00's. Not sure I'd do it again now that I've matured past that.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Technically fairytales. I retold Cinderella when I was so little my mom had to write it down for me because I couldn't write yet. I drew pictures to go with the narration
20. Favourite fic youâve written?
The Land Across the Sea (Black Clover/Boruto) - Boruto ride a tsunami to Clover Kingdom and the knights have to take him back home, which is also Yami's homeland.
I got the idea for this fic when a friend and I were talking about what we'd want the Black Clover movie to be about when it was first announced. Then I took my idea of Yami getting to return to his homeland and made it a crossover because I like the idea of Yami and Naruto knowing each other from back in the day.

I've watched a few reviews and breakdowns of the show Echo, and wow the writers and everyone involved just didn't try with it. It just sounds like a really empty show and story? Even if you've seen Hawkeye (which I have), you still don't come away from Echo... really knowing anything about the main character Maya.
From my understanding, she just sounds like a villain who wants to remain in the criminal world because reasons. She puts the blame of her troubled life on everyone else, but doesn't seem to take any responsibility in her own choices and actions.
Idk, besides the retcon of her having grown up "like a daughter" to Kingpin (which doesn't work at all in Daredevil seasons 1-3) for many years, and I guess trained to be a great fighter or maybe assassin, there's not much else to her. Like you never learn her motivations for things or anything else.
And again, for various reasons, trying to fit Maya into Kingpin's story that was established in the Daredevil show doesn't make sense nor work, but whatever I guess. It also sounds like Kingpin is a bit of a chump now, compared to how powerful and feared he was in Daredevil. He certainly felt lesser in Hawkeye to me.
It just feels and sounds like Disney was obligated to make this show because they'd already committed to it however many years ago, but if they had the choice now they wouldn't make it. I get the feeling if they could undo some stuff, the MCU wouldn't go through with the Agatha show or Ironheart and projects like that.
#Echo critical#MCU critical#I'm constantly baffled how the MCU can#consistently screw things up this bad#like they Have to be doing stuff this poorly on purpose#anyway#no I didn't watch this show because I was#never interested in it even when it was announced#Maya wasn't particularly interesting to me in Hawkeye#like she was fine for that show but to have#her be the main character of her own show? nah#and of course I just don't watch the MCU anymore#my tiny interest relies on reviews to#keep me 'in the loop'#ramblings

2022 year in review
thank you for the tag @seek--rest
Number of stories posted to AO3:
22
2. Word count this year:
64,281 (this doesn't include things I didn't publish, and this doesn't include things I wrote in private rps with friends, so I have no idea what the actual word count is, that's just what AO3 told me from what I've posted lol, but I would imagine with all that put together it might be close to 100k)
3. Fandoms I wrote for:
taking the list from AO3 (in alphabetical order):
Captain America/Avengers (movies)
Daredevil (comics/TV)
Goncharov (1973)
Guardians of the Galaxy (comics/movies)
Jessica Jones (TV)
Moon Knight (TV)
Nova (comics)
Peacemaker (2022)
Scarlet Witch (comics)
She-Hulk (TV)
The Boys (TV/2019)
X-Men (comics)
4. Pairings:
ok so the list of all the pairings that got stuff posted to AO3:
Adrian Chase/Christopher Smith (Peacemaker)
Jean Grey/Wanda Maximoff (Marvel unless otherwise noted)
Gamora/Peter Quill
Steve Rogers/Natasha Romanoff
Gamora/Richard Rider
Matt Murdock/Marc Spector
Matt Murdock/Jennifer Walters
Matt Murdock/Peter Quill
Jessica Jones/Matt Murdock
Matt Murdock/Elektra Natchios
Queen Maeve/Starlight (Annie January) (The Boys)
Matt Murdock/Foggy Nelson
Matt Murdock/Richard Rider
Katya/Sofia (Goncharov lol)
Wanda Maximoff/Matt Murdock/Richard Rider
5. Stories with the most:
Kudos: this might be all i ever wanted (all i ever wanted to happen to me) â got right in at the She-Hulk finale hype so I think that helped to boost it
Bookmarks: same as above; people were really loving that one at the time it dropped!
Comment threads: whatever happens (happens to the both of us) â my first Peacemaker fic, and I think the timing of this hit when a lot of people were finishing up the show, but I'm really flattered and honored!
Word count: ghost behind my eyes
6. Work I'm most proud of (and why): I'm going to cheat and pick a few:
ghost behind my eyes â at 10,143 words, it remains my longest self-contained one shot, and I'm really proud of the character work I did here. Christopher Smith and his character development are really important to me, and here's to hoping that will continue in Peacemaker season 2!
standing at a broken altar (asking if we feel relief) â represented a whole new creative venture for me, featuring characters I (at least at the time) had never written into fic before, and I'm someone who's... honestly pretty lapsed, religion-wise, and writing this made me think about faith, how it's questioned, tested, and found again, in a way I haven't in a while. That's a theme I'd like to explore more in future writing â and I'm planning to do more of this through Matt.
almost paradise â the story that's been a long time coming for me. Gamora is literally one of my favorite characters of all time, and to say I... did not handle Infinity War well is putting it very, very mildly; that movie came out not that extremely long after a big personal loss in my real life, so losing a character that dear to me at that time was something I took really hard. This is the first time I've actually acknowledged her death in a piece of writing, and I'm proud of myself that I did.
7. Work I'm least proud of (and why): none of them? I don't usually post something unless I feel pretty good about it.
8. Share or describe a favorite review you received:
cannot express how much this comment made my year. yes, I do. when women.
9. A time when writing was really, really hard: Honestly, my biggest challenge surrounding writing is just... working around my own chronic illness (which involves episodic fatigue) and mental health struggles. For one of those reasons or both at the same time, there were periods of the year that made writing more difficult than others. I'm working on incorporating smaller, more manageable writing goals during those periods so that I can still keep working without exhausting myself.
10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: I wasn't expecting Matt Murdock Slut Era to extend for as long as it did, and yet here we are.
11. A favorite excerpt of your writing: from almost paradise:
What he deserves, he thinks, is to be left here, alone with ghosts because thatâs all heâs fit to provide company for â maybe until he becomes one himself. Because, yeah, if Ego had been telling the truth, for all his words had been worth, with the destruction of his planet, Peter can do that now. That might actually be better for everyone involved, because all he does, clearly, is pull people into a total shitstorm or get them killed. Sometimes both.
But people donât ever really get what they deserve, do they? His mom, the kindest person the universe would probably ever know, hadnât deserved to die from a tumor in her brain, put there by an evil man sheâd chosen to give her huge heart to.
And he doesnât deserve a hand reaching toward him, pulling him up from the floor.
12: How did you grow as a writer this year: My writing got a lot smuttier LMAO But it also just... reflected a "fuck it, we ball" type of attitude that I'd been slowly embracing. Inventing ships, writing whatever the fuck I want. I've grown a lot, and I feel really liberated.
13. How do you hope to grow next year: I hope to continue just... following my bliss. I've come a really long way in not caring as much about an invisible audience and just writing whatever I want, and I aim to keep doing that. I aim to keep believing in myself in that way and going the distance with my screwball ideas.
14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): Would like to thank the discographies of Massive Attack, CHVRCHES, and Taylor Swift for fueling my writing. Also anyone when I said "I'm gonna put these blorbos together" who said "do it".
15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: I mentioned it before, but almost paradise was written during a depressive episode and I've joked it was me flinging out all my unresolved grief issues onto the page instead of going to therapy in December (using, you know, one beloved character of mine grieving another beloved character's death as a proxy), so. yes.
16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: Don't write to cater to an audience; write to cater to yourself. If you love what you do, readers can see that love, and they'll believe in it, too. Readers are really good at telling what is and isn't genuine, so the best thing to do is just... be yourself.
17. Any projects youâre looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: I have an existing WIP to finish, and a few more ideas in the can! Featuring: more Vigilmaker, more self-indulgent blorbo ships I invented (featuring either Matt Murdock or Rich Rider or both likely), and GOTG Vol 3 about to wreck my life, so of course I would imagine a good bulk of my writing this year will be related to it. This is all I'll say.
18. Tag some writers whose answers youâd like to read:

okay no one asked for this BUT im a little annoyed so here's a bit of a "review" of the first two episodes of criminal minds season 16 AKA Criminal Minds: Evolution
(read more for spoilers)
Firstly we're going to address the elephants in the room - Spencer isn't there. Now I'm a Spencer girlie through and through but I also love Penelope and Emily, and I've handled episodes without Spencer before. But knowing that he just isn't there and isn't coming back feels real different. I'm not gonna shit on the show because of this though because actors will say no to stuff all the time for a number of reasons (I been through this with Daredevil Born Again, i'm not doing it again people.)
B: the way this is shot is.. very different. So different that even in flashbacks from previous seasons they changed the aspect ratio - you can tell because the very tops of people's heads are cut off. The lighting is also different. Now these things aren't dealbreakers and like that stuff changes all the time in a show running as long as criminal minds (advances in technology and such) but for some reason the switch felt very abrupt? In the terms of show release there was nearly a two year gap between s15 and s16 which is huge, and a bigger gap than the show has ever had before. It makes sense they'd change up the style.
Number 3: The dialogue has drastically changed and I blame this wholeheartedly on it now being a Disney+ produced show. The first time Rossi said 'fuck' I audibly gasped. This sounds like pearl clutching but it's not - I had this same reaction to Brooklyn Nine Nine changing their swearing limitations - when you watch a show for so long, you get so used to the way the characters speak and the dialogue style. With a change of writers and production studios, and with release format, you get a noticeable change in the writing and dialogue. When B99 was allowed to swear (but then be censored) it was like the writers were 9 year old boys who learned the word fuck for the first time, and I couldn't help but get the same feeling with criminal minds.
IV: All the characters are so sad... and like they're sad in the rest of the show but not in the way they are here.. they killed Rossi's wife for what reason, JJ seems to be having a bumpy marriage, and Emily is in a difficult position with her job title.
All in all, I'm gonna keep watching since it's only 8 more episodes but I definitely don't feel that spark like I did with the rest of the show.

Ramble of the month November 2023: 90âs MCU phase 4 â The Secret Wars, the Defenders and putting French and Saunders in a comic book film
As we come into the first of our last two monthly rambles for 2023, Iâve decided to go back to unveiling more of my alternate superhero film franchises. I could go for more topical issues, but those will likely stress me out if I go too in-depth on them, and by sheer happenstance, episodes Iâm presently reviewing from the last season of Star Trek: Voyager will cover these a bit. So, that being the case, I figure I might as well close out 2024 by going for subjects I can enjoy talking about instead of anything winding me up.
By now, Iâm sure anyone reading these rambles on a regular basis will know the drill, but for any new readers, letâs recap. At the moment, Iâm showcasing two hypothetical superhero film universes. One is a DC film universe where Christopher Nolanâs Batman Begins was the launch point instead of Zack Snyderâs Man of Steel, the other is a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that begins from 1992 instead of 2008. The change in time period means Marvel would have all their film rights still to hand (those werenât sold until 1995), and a lot of casting and story choices would change because the source material would be different. To complete the re-cap, letâs check out the titles of films in the first three phases and do a quick plot summary.
Phase 1:
1992: Fantastic Four, Hulk, Iron Man
1993: Thor, Spider-Man, Ant-Man & The Wasp
1994: Captain America: Fantastic Four 2, Iron Man 2
1995: X-Men, Avengers, Daredevil
Phase 2:
1996: Spider-Man 2, Thor: Land of Enchantment, Silver Surfer
1997: Hulk vs Wolverine, Fantastic Four: Doomsday, Iron Man 3
1998: Captain America: Society of Serpents, Daredevil 2, X-Men 2
1999: Avengers 2, Spider-Man 3, Doctor Strange
Phase 3:
2000: Fantastic Four: World War III, Thor: RagnarĂśk, Daredevil 3
2001: Hulk: Rise of the Leader, X-Men: Fall of the Mutants, Avengers: Under Siege
2002: Doctor Strange 2, The Captain, Spider-Man 4
2003: Captain Britain, Fantastic Four: Enter the Negative Zone, Ghost Rider
Phase 1, as most could probably surmise, is very much about establishing the MCU and its characters. The Fantastic Four are done first to mirror their points of distinction from other superhero groups that hold true in the comics, with the Avengers and X-Men coming later on. Phase 2 then expands and develops those characters and brings about an early mantle change, with Tony Stark going down the route of alcoholism as in the comics and Rhodey having to become Iron Man, again as in the comics. We also see the death of Gwen Stacy, having built up to Norman Osborn becoming the Green Goblin in the films instead of rushing that arc in one film. Phase 3 then brings out a lot more of the third-film-loss trope we know from the real MCU. At the same time, we also get a lot of new characters introduced, bringing us to the slate for Phase 4.
Phase 4:
2004: Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Secret Wars: Part I
2005: Excalibur, Defenders, Ghost Rider 2
2006: X-Factor, Secret Wars: Part II, Heroes For Hire
2007: Namor the Submariner, Doctor Strange 3, Iron Man: Enter The Mandarin
With this phase, you can see weâre really trying a lot more new titles compared to past phases. This is because much of the cast of the MCU to date is tied up in the events of the two Secret Wars films, thereby leaving a lot of room for other characters and teams to be given the spotlight. How does this all pan out in practice? Well, letâs start looking at the films of phase 4, beginning with Black PantherâŚ
Black Panther (2004) Directed by Tim Story
T'Challa/Black Panther = Chadwick Boseman
Shuri = Tatyana Ali
Ramonda = Alfre Woodard
T'Chaka = Courtney B. Vance
W'Kabi = Chiwetel Ejiofor
Okoye = Nia Long
Zuri = Joseph Marcell
Ulysses Klaue/Klaw = Andy Serkis
M'Baku = Idris Elba
As those who read my August ramble will know, my alternative MCU introduces the Black Panther via the Fantastic Four film World War III, in homage to the comics version of the character having the same debut. However, just as the real MCU version went on to a solo film after getting his cinematic debut, so too does this version of TâChalla. Iâve kept Chadwick Boseman in the main role as he could still play an adult King TâChalla back in 2004. The same canât be said for Letitia Wright with Shuri, and some other roles would also need shifting around, hence the case above. The only other actor from the real MCU to retain their casting is Andy Serkis as Klaw. As for the plot, itâs strictly TâChalla versus Klaw for him murdering TâChallaâs father years earlier, so thereâs less focus on challenge rites in this film.
Iâve also retained the real MCUâs depiction of MâBaku as a voice of dissent to TâChallaâs rule, but with the full intention of taking him full villain at a later point. As for why no Killmonger, I wanted to build up to him and not use up all of TâChallaâs most notable foes in one film. For direction, I felt it was important that it still be a Black person in the directorâs chair, so from the directors active at this time, I picked Tim Story, the man who directed Foxâs Fantastic Four films. The first of those wasnât too bad, and with a better studio to work with, I bet Story could do a good job on a property like Black Panther.
Captain Marvel (2004) Directed by Roland Emmerich
Mar-Vell/Captain Marvel = Jude Law
Yon-Rogg = Colin Salmon
Carol Danvers/Ms Marvel = Melissa Joan Hart
Ronan The Accuser = Ray Stevenson
Zarek = Avery Brooks
Talos = Dominic West
Emperor Dorek VII = Ray Winstone
Empress R'klll = Teri Hatcher
Now for the comic book neophytes wondering why Carol Danvers isnât Captain Marvel, this is one of those plot-points that is only supported by a more recent selection of Marvelâs comic-book lore. The original Captain Marvel within Marvelâs source material was the Kree character named Mar-Vell, who was gender-flipped and played by Annette Benning in the 2019 Captain Marvel film, leaving Jude Law to play the villainous Kree Yon-Rogg. Carol Danvers was first turned into Ms Marvel following events in the original Captain Marvel comics, only to cease using the title after loosing her original powers to the mutant known as Rogue. Following adventures with the X-Men, Carol Danvers gained new powers and joined a group of space pirates called the Starjammers as Binary. Later, she came back to Earth and went back to her old Ms Marvel codename, then her old Air Force callsign of Warbird, before finally becoming Captain Marvel.
Now while I canât say precisely when Carol became CM in the comics, I do know itâs sometime in the 2010âs, so a 2004 film wonât support her being the first Captain Marvel. Instead, this film goes back to the early comics and makes Mar-Vell the original title-holder, telling a fairly simple first contact story with Carol as the audience POV character. Rather than go for any obvious film actress of this time period, I decided it would be cool to see Melissa Joan Hart take on the role of Carol Danvers opposite Jude Law. We then have a mix of great actors, including Trek alumni in the form of Avery Brooks (DS9âs Captain Sisko). As weâre going down a first contact route without any Trek overtones, I opted for Independence Dayâs Roland Emmerich to helm this one.
Secret Wars Part I (2004) Directed by Steven Spielberg
Steve Rogers/Captain America = Brad Pitt
Thor = Dolph Lundgren
Janet Van Dyne/Wasp = Catherine Zeta Jones
Clint Barton/Hawkeye = Kevin Costner
Vision = Casper Van Dien
Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff = Kate Beckinsale
Quicksilver/Pietro Maximoff = Robert Sean Leonard
James Rhodes/Iron Man II = Samuel L Jackson
Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk = Lucy Lawless
Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic = Tom Hanks
Johnny Storm/Human Torch = David Spade
Ben Grimm/Thing = Bryan Cranston
Crystal = Dina Meyer
Storm/Ororo Monroe = Halle Berry
Polaris/Lorna Dane = Jeri Ryan
Havok/Alex Summers = Kevin Bacon
Wolverine/Logan = Tom Cruise
Peter Rasputin/Colossus = Henry Cavill
Remi LeBeau/Gambit = Zachary Levi
Peter Parker/Spider-Man = Wil Weaton
Beyonder = Ian McShane
Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom = Goran ViĹĄnjiÄ
Wizard/Bentley Whitford = Alan Rukk
Trapster/Pete Petruski = Eddie Jemison
Sandman/Flint Marko = Dwayne Johnson
Titania/Mary MacPherson = Amy Christine Dumas
Electro/Max Dillon = Eddie Cahill
Lizard/Dr Curt Connors = Dylan Baker
Magneto = Ian McKellan
Calisto = Carrie-Anne Moss
Sunder = Kevin Nash
Sabretooth = Tyler Mane
Pyro = Hugh Jackman
Mentallo/Marvin Flumm = Brad Dourif
So, what is Secret Wars? Well, thereâs been at least three instances of stories with this title in Marvelâs history, at least going by the comics. The original was a mini-series in the mid-1980âs, where a being known as the Beyonder created a planet called Battleworld from pieces of other planets (including a suburb of Denver, Colorado for reasons I canât totally fathom). He then transported a selection of Marvelâs heroes and villains to Battleworld and offered to grant whichever side won whatever they desired. Despite a brief usurpation of the Beyonderâs powers by Doom, the heroes apparently won and returned home. The second story was Secret Wars II, in which the Beyonder went to Earth and assumed human form in an effort to further his understanding of life in our universe. Frustrated by what he learned, the Beyonder almost destroyed reality.
More recently, around 2015, there was a new Secret Wars which was similar to the first mini-series, but involved some kind of multiversal crossover, the apparent idea being to amalgamate some of Marvelâs other comic book continuities like the Ultimates comics with the main Marvel comics continuity. For this film and its sequel, Iâd be looking to do an adaptation of the original, but with greater emphasis on the war aspect. In this case, the Beyonder pulls off the same creation of Battleworld, but like the adaptation of the story in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, he gives the super-villains a little head-start to better challenge the heroes.
Now the bulk of the cast for this film is carried over from past MCU films in my alternative continuity, but there are a few new characters in the mix. In particular, Colossus and Gambit make their first MCU appearances, having both joined Stormâs band of X-Men since the events of Fall of the Mutants in the last phase, with Colossus being a returning former student whereas Gambit is a total newcomer. I chose Cavill for Colossus because he can look the part and is capable of doing other accents than his own, while Zachary Levi gets the role of Gambit due to being a native of Louisiana, not to mention he once played Fandrall the Dashing in Thor: The Dark World. As such, I can easily see Levi modifying his hair and accent just slightly to pull off a perfect Gambit.
On the villain side, the Frightful Four, Lizard, Electro and Mentallo are all new additions, the last character being part of Magnetoâs Brotherhood for this film. Indeed, as Magneto ends up among the heroes to start with, Mentallo and Calisto set up a mutant-ruled fiefdom on Battleworld in this film, and for Magneto, the question asked of his character is whether heâll tear it down or try to take it over. As the films will also be taking the war part more seriously, donât expect the heroes to all walk ok by the end. This is also why Steven Spielberg gets to direct; who better than the director of Saving Private Ryan to handle superheroes having to get into a war?
Excalibur (2005): Directed by Christopher Nolan
Brian Braddock Jr./Captain Britain = Jamie Bamber
Betsy Braddock/Psylocke = Lena Headey
Meggan = Sienna Miller
Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler = Daniel BrĂźhl
Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat = Selma Blair
Banshee/Sean Cassidy = Liam Neeson
Courtney Ross = Rosamund Pike
DI Dai Thomas = Mark Lewis Jones
Detective Kate Fraser = Kate Winslet
Dr Moira Mactaggert = Olivia Williams
Mojo = Jim Carrey
Major Domo = Hugh Laurie
Spiral = Eva Green
Gatecrasher = Dawn French
Yap (voice-acting) = Jennifer Saunders
Scatterbrain = ClĂŠmence PoĂŠsy
Thug = Donal Logue
Ferro = Jason Isaacs
China Doll = Miranda Richardson
Longshot = Ben Foster
Alison Blaire/Dazzler = Julia Styles
Having given Captain Britain a solo film and scattered the X-Men in the last phase, the timing would then be right in this phase to bring about the British off-shoot of the X-Men that is Excalibur. As this MCU has yet to uncork any time-travel for its films, we substitute Rachel Summers of the original Excalibur comics for Brian Braddockâs twin sister Psylocke in the film version. At the same time, while Banshee does appear in the film, heâs taken out early and is then kept to the side-lines.
However, the plot still tries to echo the original Excalibur graphic novel; the interdimensional tyrant Mojo is hunting someone, and uses Gatecrasher and her group, known as Technet, to grab them. With Rachel Summers not being used, Mojoverse native and rebel hero Longshot is instead the target, along with his mutant girlfriend Dazzler. When the hunt spills over to Britain, Captain Britain, his sister and his girlfriend team up with Nightcrawler and Shadowcat of the X-Men on an inter-dimensional rescue mission, and thus Excalibur is born.
Casting-wise, everyone down as far as Detective Kate Fraser is reprising from past films. From Dr Moira MacTaggart on down, the cast is new to this film. Much like with Captain Britainâs solo film, Iâd want a lot of British talent to be involved, which accounts for most of the casting choices. However, since a lot of the characters come from another dimension, there can be more flexibility regarding accents. This accounts for why the likes of Jim Carrey, Donal Logue, Ben Foster and Julia Styles enter into the film. I also cast French and Saunders here, though in a somewhat atypical fashion. Here, Dawn French would likely be in either a mo-cap suit or heavy make-up to play Gatecrasher, whereas Jennifer Saunders would be voicing a small talking creature named Yap, who is usually clinging to Gatecrasherâs shoulder. Add in the likes of Hugh Laurie and Miranda Richardson, both alumni of the Blackadder sit-coms, and we have some real British comedy gold in the line-up.
Direction-wise, itâs back to Christopher Nolan to keep the film British behind the scenes as well as in front of camera.
Defenders (2005) Directed by Sam Raimi
Dr Stephen Strange = Johnny Depp
Namor McKenzie/The Submariner = Christian Bale
Bruce Banner/Hulk = John Cusack
Silver Surfer = David Wenham
Valkyrie = Diane Kruger
Kyle Richmond/Nighthawk = Josh Duhamel
Patsy Walker/Hellcat = Mena Suvari
Wong = Will Yun Lee
Clea = Keira Knightley
Yandroth = Sullivan Stapleton
The original Defenders comics revolved around a superhero ânon-teamâ that would unite when the need arose, but lacked a standing headquarters, charter, etc. like the Avengers had. This made the group something of a haven for the outsiders who formed it, namely Doctor Strange, Namor the Sub-Mariner and the Hulk, with the Silver Surfer becoming an honourary founding member later on. The team also gained a few more dedicated members in the forms of the Asgardian Valkyrie, wealthy industrialist Kyle Richmond, and superhero fan girl turned superhero Hellcat. This film basically shows the Defenders forming against Doctor Strangeâs one-time foe Yandroth, in part because Yandroth unleashes some chaos while many other heroes are missing due to the events of Secret Wars.
Only the top four Defenders, plus Wong and Clea, are retained from past films in this MCU. The rest of the cast are new additions, but really, itâs combining the likes of Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, John Cusack and David Wenham into the core of the team thatâs the real excitement. Mind you, the rest of the cast are all well-known and highly skilled actors as well. Direction-wise, I figured that since Strange and Yandroth are both on the mystic horror side of the Marvel world, a horror director of note like Sam Raimi would be good.
Ghost Rider 2 (2005) Directed by Tim Burton
Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider = Connor Trinneer
Roxanne Simpson = Jessica Alba
Mephistopheles = Jeffery Combs
Orb/Drake Shannon = Michael Rooker
Blackout/Ray Carrigan = Johnny Whitworth
Karen Stirling = Jamie Alexander
Cynthia Randolph = Kirsten Dunst
Senator Stirling = Tim Robbins
Mark Crane = Nicholas Cage
Closing out 2005âs portion of this alternate MCU is a sequel for Johnny Blazeâs iteration of Ghost Rider, with Tim Burton back at the helm for obvious reasons. Only the top three roles are retained from film 1, while the rest is fresh casting. Story-wise, itâs a bit of a mash-up of a few different elements from the original Ghost Rider run into a single narrative. Following the events of film 1, Blaze is living a bit of a drifterâs existence as he tries to deal with the demon spirit within him always taking over. His girlfriend Roxanne is searching for him, and her scenes in the film are basically a kind of âwill-she-wonât-sheâ break from the A-plot.
Said A-Plot is that a small town is being terrorised by a cult that has claimed the life of the son of a prominent senator. When Blaze arrives, it isnât long before his flaming alter ego is up to his fiery skull in their business, resulting in cult leader Mark Crane making a deal with Mephistopheles to imbue two of his henchmen with demonic powers. Also caught in the mix are the senatorâs daughter and a visiting reporter, each of whom is attracted to Johnny and reacts differently when he becomes the Ghost Rider.
X-Factor (2006) Directed by LeVar Burton
Cyclops/Scott Summers = Patrick Swayze
Jean Grey = Milla Jovovich
Warren Worthington III/Death/Archangel = Neil Patrick Harris
Beast/Hank McCoy = Alec Baldwin
Robert Drake/Iceman = Michael Weatherley
Angelica Jones = Lindsey Lohan
Xi'an Coy Manh = Katie Leung
Julio Richter = Alfonso Herrera
En Sabar Nur/Apocalypse = Faran Tahir
Plague/Pestilence = Gates McFadden
Caliban/Death = Joe Pantoliano
Autumn Rolfson/Famine = Bryce Dallas Howard
War = Joel Kinnaman
Raven Darkholme/Mystique = Connie Nielsen
As 2006 begins, we get another X-Men off-shoot, this time focusing on the original X-Men as the comics reckon things becoming X-Factor. The team is given some very different origins this time round, but itâs still the classic team membership fans of the original X-Factor comics know. In the film, Warren has lost his wings following injuries sustained in the events of the X-Men: Fall of the Mutants film. Consequently, he is duped into becoming part of the Horsemen of Apocalypse as the mutant known as Apocalypse rises to attack humanity. The rest of the X-Men alumni (Cyclops, Jean, Iceman and Beast) band together with encouragement from a government operative who is really the mutant shape-shifter Mystique, plus a trio of X-students currently in the teamâs charge.
After the five mutants of X-Factor, we get mostly new characters to this MCU and thus a lot of new faces. In terms of character selection, thatâs mostly about trying to honour the comics when it comes to the Horsemen, since only the 90âs animated series has ever done so with these villains. The whole original idea of the Horsemen was to evoke their biblical counter-parts, so anything not doing that isnât doing the job right, at least not for the teamâs original incarnation. Plague and Caliban, as former members of the Morlocks, are reprised roles from X-Men: Fall of the Mutants, while Famine and War come into the film new. As for working in Mystique, thatâs someone weâll certainly see in future films. Direction-wise, I like calling on Trek alumni to direct given some of the thematic overlaps between X-lore and Trek, hence my selection of Levar Burton.
Secret Wars Part II (2006) Directed by Steven Spielberg
Steve Rogers/Captain America = Brad Pitt
Thor = Dolph Lundgren
Janet Van Dyne/Wasp = Catherine Zeta Jones
Clint Barton/Hawkeye = Kevin Costner
Vision = Casper Van Dien
Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff = Kate Beckinsale
James Rhodes/Iron Man II = Samuel L Jackson
Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk = Lucy Lawless
Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic = Tom Hanks
Johnny Storm/Human Torch = David Spade
Ben Grimm/Thing = Bryan Cranston
Crystal = Dina Meyer
Storm/Ororo Monroe = Halle Berry
Polaris/Lorna Dane = Jeri Ryan
Wolverine/Logan = Tom Cruise
Peter Rasputin/Colossus = Henry Cavill
Remi LeBeau/Gambit = Zachary Levi
Peter Parker/Spider-Man = Wil Weaton
Beyonder = Ian McShane
Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom = Goran ViĹĄnjiÄ
Wizard/Bentley Whitford = Alan Rukk
Sandman/Flint Marko = Dwayne Johnson
Titania/Mary MacPherson = Amy Christine Dumas
Electro/Max Dillon = Eddie Cahill
Lizard/Dr Curt Connors = Dylan Baker
Magneto = Ian McKellan
Calisto = Carrie-Anne Moss
Sabretooth = Tyler Mane
Pyro = Hugh Jackman
Mentallo/Marvin Flumm = Brad Dourif
Zsaji = Eva Mendes
By the time Spielberg brings us part 2 of Secret Wars, weâve lost Quicksilver, ideals are getting blurred and our heroes are struggling, which isnât helped by Doom managing to usurp the powers of the Beyonder. When this brings an unexpected peace to Battleworld, the heroes face the question of whether or not they should try and challenge Doom, assuming they can. The film will also honour the original comics by making it the origin of the Venom symbiote, something no adaptation has ever done. The one other change is the incorporation of the alien one-shot character Zsaji from the original Secret Wars, though in keeping with taking the war more seriously, she has a stronger role than just being a random healer and would-be love interest to Johnny Storm or Colossus.
Heroes For Hire (2006) Directed by Paul McGuigan
Luke Cage = Tyrese Gibson
Danny Rand/Iron Fist = Neil Jackson
Shang Chi = Garrett Wang
Misty Knight = Rosario Dawson
Colleen Wing = Olivia Munn
Jessica Jones = Christina Ricci
Willis Stryker = Bokeem Woodbine
Harold Meachum = Bill Pullman
Davos/Steel Serpent = Kevin Durand
Batroc = Georges St-Pierre
Scimitar = Jason Mamoa
Clay Quartermain = Patrick Wilson
Daisy Dugan = Hayley Atwell
Zebidiah Killgrave/Purple Man = Tom McCamus
Most of the characters Marvel and Netflix put in the Defenders streaming show would originally have been members of, or been acquainted with, the little-known Heroes for Hire group, primarily formed in the comics by Luke Cage, Iron First and Misty Knight. This film works in a few more street-level members, including Shang-Chi, Colleen Wing and Jessica Jones. The team consists of various for-hire vigilantes and volunteers who are trying to keep the streets of New York safe following the apparent retirement of Daredevil. When an enclave of organised criminals attempts to eliminate them, SHIELD agents Quartermain and Dugan reach out to unite the heroes into a team.
This is a new film and new cast, with some roles leaping readily to mind while others have taken a bit more thought to select. Again, Iâve gone for at least one Trek alumni by picking Garrett Wang of Voyager fame to play Shang-Chi, and Iâve also looked to sci-fi series Mutant X for another bit of casting. Tom McCamus, who played Mason Eckhart in that show, takes up the role of Killgrave for this film, though the character appears only in flashbacks, as I feel thatâs sufficient for the filmâs plot to showcase where Jessica is mentally and emotionally as the team comes together. Direction-wise, I picked Paul McGuigan based on the work he did on the film Lucky Number Slevin.
Namor The Submariner (2007) Directed by Gore Verbinski
Namor McKenzie/The Submariner = Christian Bale
General Krang = Tim Curry
Lady Dorma = Katie Holmes
Vashti = Naseeruddin Shah
Attuma = Danny Hutson
Llyra = Rachel Leigh Cook
Dr Walter Newell/Stingray = Rider Strong
Kicking off the 2007 films that conclude this MCUâs phase four is a solo entry for Namor the Sub-Mariner, who like Black Panther got his introduction via Fantastic Four: World War III in recognition of his first Marvel appearance (the character previously having existed under the companyâs pre-1960âs name of Timely Comics). Having also appeared in the Defenders film earlier in this phase, this solo film has Namor return to Atlantis to find his throne under threat by a coup, involving the Nemurian Llyra and a traitor from within his imperial court. The film includes at least two other characters who have betrayed or openly opposed Namor in the comics to keep fans guessing and work in a little defiance of expectation. The film also works in another undersea superhero in the form of Stingray to give audiences a POV character for delving into Namorâs world.
Namor, Krang and Lady Dorma are reprised roles for this film, while the rest of the cast is new. For direction, I decided to look into the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for directors with experience of filming anything at sea with fantastical elements, and based on this chose Gore Verbinski as he directed the entire original trilogy of that franchise.
Doctor Strange 3 (2007) Directed by Sam Raimi
Dr Stephen Strange = Johnny Depp
Wong = Will Yun Lee
Clea = Keira Knightley
Jericho Drumm/Brother Voodoo = Doug E. Doug
Valkyrie = Diane Kruger
Baron Karl Mordo = Michael Dorn
Dormammu = Bernard Hill
Umar = Ruth Wilson
Dweller-In-Darkness = Colin Firth
In this third and final solo film for Doctor Strange, our title hero tries to help his fellow Defender Valkyrie acclimate to life on Earth, and is also visited by fellow sorcerer Brother Voodoo. The time he devotes to his guests puts a strain on his romantic relationship with Clea, but when Baron Mordo returns with the backing of Dormammu once more, battle takes precedence. However, the battle is not all it seems, as Dormammuâs sister Umar and the mysterious Dweller-In-Darkness are lurking in the shadows. By the filmâs end, someone will have to be sacrificed to keep Earth safe from a grave mystic peril.
A lot of the casting is retained from prior films, but Brother Voodoo, Umar and DID are all new roles. Ruth Wilson and Colin Firth are both chosen for the gravitas their villain roles need, while Doug E. Doug is my choice for Brother Voodoo based on the more serious moments he had at times when playing Sanka in Cool Runnings. For direction, I think itâs a good idea to stick with Sam Raimi on this one to keep things consistent with the Defenders film that precedes this one.
Iron Man: Enter The Mandarin (2007) Directed by Jon Favreau
Tony Stark/Iron Man = Tom Selleck
James Rhodes/Iron Man II/War Machine = Samuel L. Jackson
Justin Hammer = Christopher Lee
Bethany Cabe = Julia Roberts
The Mandarin/Xin Xhang = Chow Yun-Fat
Arthur Parks/Living Laser = Josh Dallas
Whitney Frost/Madame Masque = Alice Eve
Boris Bullski/Titanium Man = Alan Tudyk
Douglas Scott/Razorfist = Joe Manganiello
Kathy Dare = Cameron Diaz
So, letâs recap what weâve had by way of Iron Man lore in this alternate MCU. The first two IM films are directed by Steven Spielberg with Tom Selleck playing Iron Man, dealing with similar story arcs to the first two films of the real MCU, prior to forming the Avengers in a team-up film under director Andrew Davis. IM3 then shows Stark fall victim to his alcoholism and Samuel L Jacksonâs Rhodey taking up the Iron Man mantle, with Sam Raimi directing. After that, Rhodeyâs Iron Man features in a second Avengers film under Davis and the Secret Wars two-parter with Spielberg. Here, we get the director of the real MCUâs first two Iron Man movies on hand to guide a film showcasing the comeback trail of Tony Stark and James Rhodes becoming War Machine, all to face Iron Manâs arch-foe the Mandarin.
For this film, a lot of things are different. First, while the Mandarin has his proper ten rings from the comics, he is still developed beyond a stereotype, being presented as a Chinese businessman first and foremost who is using alien tech rings to try and conquer what his corporate efforts cannot. He avoids some of his comic counterpartâs more flamboyant attire, but nonetheless has a fondness for Chinaâs dynastic era and opposes its modern-day government. Second, weâre done with Happy and Pepper, and while Bethany Cabe is retained from IM3, we also include the insane stalker girlfriend Kathy Dare for the purpose of misdirecting the fans. After all, if weâre not doing it with the Mandarin, we might as well do it somewhere.
And that concludes our look into phase 4 of our alternate MCU. Next month, weâll check phase 4 of the alternate DC movie universe. Until then, ta-ta for now.

bear nonnie here! iâm so glad youâre on the mend â¤ď¸âđŠš
as for what iâm watching, i was super eager to watch more Jon Bernthal so I started the whole netflix marvel shows again chronologically, figured if id do a re-watch id do it thoroughly. So i started with Daredevil, iâm finishing up season 1, from then iâll watch season 2 then the punisher, then ill do the defenders and then back to daredevil. itâs been long enough that i donât remember the details so iâm pretty amped.
i want to know what you're watching?!? or what youâre planning to watch??
Aw thank you lovely Bear Nonnie! Adore you and always absolutely love your asks!
I know you might've already but have you seen Sharp Stick...? If you're feeling thirsty for Jon Bernthal it's the film for you đ it also has Ebon Moss-Bachrach in it! I watched it recently and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting based on the reviews.
Oh I love that for you so much Bear Nonnie! I need to do a Netflix Marvel rewatch! I adore Daredevil and have been reading a lot of fanfics based on the Netflix Marvel shows (and I really want to start writing some pieces for some of those characters!) How are you finding the rewatch so far? I feel like I'd be the same, it's been so long I think I wouldn't remember a lot of the details. And love the chronological commitment!
I watched S2 of The Bear when in hospital and loved it and watched it all FAR TOO QUICKLY! A couple of key thoughts from that were:
1. Wow, the jokes about Clare being a manic pixie dream girl REALLY weren't wrong. I didn't think it would be such a case.
2. THE FAMILY CHRISTMAS EPISODE?!
3. I find it really interesting that the whole flashback episode was like 5 years before the current timeline and that even then, we can clearly see the tragic roads ahead for the characters. It made me extremely curious about the last interactions that Natalie and Carmy have with Michael, it'll be painful but I do want to see that (I'm a sucker for pain). When I'd seen snippets of it online I was under the impression it was the last Christmas before his passing.
4. NATALIE! NATALIE! NATALIE! my sweet, sweet baby. I am so glad she has Pete and I adore them together, he's so sweet and good to her.
But moving on from The Bear... I've been watching more films lately actually I think Succession ending almost feels like a serious break up and so it's hard trying to make the commitment and finding a new show (I am open to suggestions!) But I've recently started Hunters and Kevin Can Fuck Himself (I'm 2 episodes in and it's really interesting and has a pretty eerie vibe). I've had a colleague keep recommending Sharp Objects and I loved the book and film of Gone Girl so I mean to get onto that! I also need to catch up on Black Mirror!
Thank you for sharing with me! Keep me updated on how your rewatch goes and anything else you start watching! Love these conversations đ

Donât know if there are any Daredevil fans lurking out there but either way letâs all be on the same page about Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy (Elden Hensen) being absolutely essential for Daredevil.
As a character, especially in the Netflix Marvel series, Matt is a pained soul. Like literally, in most cases. Self-sacrificing in that classic hero way, yes, but also self-destructive, self-harming. Especially in season three, we see the way Matt, left to his own devices and without faith, is not only a danger to others, but primarily himself. From the past to present, there is something so deeply shattered within Matt and emotions and relationships.
Karen and, even more so, Foggy are what changes this narrative. They simply care for Matt, asking after his well-being and getting angry when heâs hurt. They donât try to sympathize or entirely understand his Daredevil gig because a) theyâre relatively normal people with relatively normal perceptions and b) they arenât going to be about something that puts their friend in danger. Such genuine care is a rarity in Mattâs life, as well as this aspect of normalcy.
Karen and Foggy both relate to Matt Murdock, attorney-at-law, grounding this side of the character and giving it dimension. One of the most compelling parts of the TV series is this conflict between Matt Murdock and Daredevil, how theyâre separated or really not so different. This is a central theme of nearly every season. The slice-of-life scenes with Matt, Karen, and Foggy are not only super enjoyable, but they also provide this substantial view into why Matt has this other life and keeps the two separate.
If thatâs too much wordiness, then just review at the episodes. âNelson v. Murdockâ is easily in the top 5. Karen has an entire episode named âKaren.â Season 3 ends with them in Foggyâs familyâs deli, restarting their practice. The show takes extreme time and effort to not only have these characters present, but actually tell their stories as well.
Unlike most current MCU features, these are characters technically inessential to the overall franchise (they are not going to be recurrent cameos, turn into future superheroes, or have grand backgrounds) but they are incredibly vital to the heart of Daredevil. Daredevil may be the titular character, however, the show is applauded as one of the best comic adaptations because that is not the singular focus. We watch for more than just baddies getting their head bashed in (though that is part of it); we watch to see Matt, as an individual, reconcile his two lives in addition to following the lives of those around him.
I genuinely canât even fathom how they arenât a part of the show. The only, possible and acceptable reason, would be the show taking place during the blip or the actors simply not having signed on yet. Regarding the former, it does feel like a stretch considering the characterâs made appearances in two post-blip series now (Spiderman: FFH and She-Hulk), but it would be a reasonable explanation and the dynamics with The Punisher (Jon Bernthalâs having been confirmed) would be very interesting. Since the TV series centered more on the origins of Daredevil (as his skills are heavily downplayed for grittiness and he also just gets his suit), it would feel wrong to have s4 again focus on enhancing his character. Still, as Disney is family-friendly and Cox himself said the show wonât be nearly as gruesome as the series was originally, I think this narrative would feel lacking as the execution wouldnât be able to match up to the idea. Now, if itâs the latter? Disney better be sending those contracts to Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Hensen pronto because thereâs no way they canât have the character and absolutely no way in hell theyâll be able to recast them.

I watched Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness in theaters and I personally found most of it boring. I thought America would have a lot more overall screentime and direct interaction with Strange than she actually did :( Wish I had caught it on streaming instead lol.
