personally i think having strong opinions about which character tops is fine as long as you are conscious of like whether you are basing these things on stereotypes and stuff (which is why i DONT like when ppl have strong opinions (and i do mean OPINIONS as opposed to just reading preferences) about who tops in rpf because theyre not characters and you dont know them so like what are you basing that on). and sometimes these headcanons might adhere to stereotypes which is like fine whatever as long as thats not the REASON u know? i

also think its kind of not great to suggest that headcanoning characters as switches or having an even balance (or just not having an opinion on who would be a top) is the only way to "be normal" about gay characters like actually a lot of real life gay people are strict tops and bottoms! like yes more ppl switch than stereotypical depictions make you believe but its still a part of like gay culture and stuff.

like personally i USUALLY am less concerned about who is topping bc i mostly read d/s fic and i DO have very strong opinions about those headcanons like it is about accurate characterization to me. and sometimes who tops is part of that also but i am MORE concerned with who doms and what theyre into whether they're topping or not. but like you still gotta be aware of Why you headcanon things a certain way

everyone for themselves, To The Death, comes down to Taako and Davenport, and maybe Amber.

everyone for themselves, just for funsies: comes down to Taako, Aubrey, and Magnus. the diff here is that Aubrey and Magnus are hyper-competitive and very powerful, but also wouldn't kill a friend to stay alive.

teams required, for funsies: Travis 100%, see above, and his team are most likely to work together as well as having your traditional tank-wizard-support spread

teams required, To The Death: comes down to Team Justin and Team Griffin.

Travis' team doesn't have the heart, Clint doesn't play enough high damage-dealing PCs to stand a chance, though with the only true healer I don't think they go down immediately.

Team Justin has maybe the worst mix of personalities - none of them really want to scrap in the first place, and all tend to be loners. only Taako and Amber both have enough power and would kill someone they know to stay alive. though I can see their goals aligning, they're going to be butting heads a lot. (Duck may be the Chosen One, but I don't think he would kill a friend).

Team Griffin has the benefit of Davenport, who has a century of practice at redirecting chaotic diva energy into getting shit done - he can handle Fitz, though I doubt they'd be besties exactly. importantly, both Fitz and Davenport have the cold logic or sheer narcissism to kill, along with the damage-dealing to back it up. indrid works best in a group with stronger people to protect him so he can feed them intel, and that's exactly what hes got. also, he has a well-established fear of death. we have very little info on what that Mothman form do, but it could definitely come in handy, especially for mobility (it's established that Moth!Indrid can carry at least one person while flying). I don't pretend to know much about Montrose, but if he can cooperate with the others then the team has the benefit of numbers over Taako and Amber.

So it comes down to Taako & Amber vs. Dav, Fitz, Indrid, and potentially Montrose.

also a factor: if this is Hunger Games style where survival in a hostile environment is part of it, bc then Balance PCs, duck, and the firbolg have a distinct advantage of knowing how to survive in the wild (bc of stolen century/park ranger/nature guy)
