A Strategic Guide To CYL Voting Guide For Sapphics

As we prepare for The Chose Your Legends Voting Era I wanted to share my thoughts on how I am going to vote in the event and how I think we could combine our powers to have a sapphic character once again win Chose Your Legends. Sapphics Winning CYL isn't new with Lyn being a winner in the first round and being the first FF paired ending in the series with Florina that counts for something and obviously later we got the queen of Sapphic's Hearts Edelgard with the most votes of any CYL ever. However, CYL voting stocks are majorly majorly down which means a hand fool of queer women can turn the tides if we're banned together.

Dorothea and Monica are the most textual, most canon queers still on the table with a shot to win. While others on this list have strong subtext, strong paired supports, strong endings, Monica and Dorothea are both unavoidably queer and unlike Heather who now is finally in the game have a shot at winning this CYL. Dorothea fell 7 places last year in CYL7 going into 22nd place but with 4,529 votes as an already entrenched voting base having our bisexual icon come up on top is not unviable. Monica ended up in 63rd place but got that rising star award giving her even more momentum for all we know that gives them like a buff in voting a gimmick or something next year. I personally love the idea of Monica and Dorothea both winning in 1st and 2nd ready to follow Edelgard into Brave Hero territory

16,941 votes is ultimately our goal to beat assuming Engage doesn't raise votes [and it isn't that popular, sold worse then the last 3 proper games, and of those people who bought it a lot of impressions were negative]. I do think Engage is likely to have a bit of a buff and Yunaka and Ivy both have a strong chance at a strong showing in CYL but I don't think Engage will fundamentally be the trick to revitalize CYL voting in all honesty we'll either get less votes or new innovations on botting. All that is to say we would need 2421 people to commit all 7 votes to hit past Gulvegs first place win. 2053 to get past Corrin's voting threshold in second place.

However, voting to win isn't the only way to vote in CYL. The highest voted characters will end up in the game the next year, not sure fire but very often they grab some of the most popular characters left from any given game and then place them on a new hero banner. However, those all important slots are getting smaller and smaller as banners now have the option of releasing 5 different types of units that can go inside of a banner. New OCs, Rearmed Hero, Attuned Hero, Ascended Hero, and any of these variants but an OC from FEH who already exists. Often these come with the other units being auto demotes but demotes are ridiculously rare and suck so increasingly praying for a favorite to be in an NHB is coming a less smart thing. I do think just preforming well with a favorite who is popular maybe is better in terms of getting one of those alts for them. Although OCs do seem to be mostly going in order so unlikely voting for like Eir will give Eir yet another alt or something inside of a NHB.

That said, I think it's still a valid way to go I want a standard version of Heather and while this year I am going to pivot my vote I do think I could return to Heather voting in the future and maybe even this year Heather could see a boost from just more people being aware of her. If I saw enough Heather love I would pivot to trying to get Brave Heather.

Who are you voting for? Why? Will you join the Monica or Dorothea army? Personally, I think putting my money on the Monica train sounds good especially since Dorothea still doesn't actually have a base alt which means her CYL winner is likely to be a boring just normal Dorothea as they have done with Three Houses characters in the past.

I’m really impressed by how far Veronica has come.

She not even one of the main characters—just the main villain of book 1, and yet she became a fan favourite. She’s the only OC who won a CYL, and I know it was partially to block Camilla from winning and because people wanted her og alt, but I do think many people started loving her more since then.

Twice she’s been the icon of the game. From the recurring characters, she’s the only one with a legendary alt. Although we never got her original form, she got several alts including a duo (also let’s not forget that for Valentine’s Day, they ignored Sharena and put her with the royal family instead.)

She’s in Engage. Out of all the characters that they could’ve chosen, they chose her. And even if they wanted a Heroes representative, it was her over Alfonse aka the main lord. Isn’t it amazing?

There’s a chance she wins AHR now. And even if she lands second place, it’s still amazing. She won against (the good) Edel and against Camilla. Two of the most controversial popular women in the game.

Idk it makes me feel like a proud parent :’)

Edited to add: she also has a scale figure (not released yet). Considering she comes from a gacha game and not a mainline title, I do consider it amazing too.

M!Corrin-wise -  I dont think Omega Yato will be his weapon, because the refined version of his OG version (normal M!Corrin in the red pool) already has it. While his art has his normal weapon, his sprite has Omega Yato.

Dawn Yato is definitely a possibility tho! although it would be very odd to give it to him and not make its Twin/Mirror Weapon Dusk Yato to CQ!themed!L!F!Corrin.(but hey its IS)

(something i am so salty off bc i love Dawn and Dusk Yatos ;-; they are so pretty and match so well their promotions... and games... heck!! they both have their route-represent Legendary weapons features incorpored on them and just *clenches fist at the emotional moments*)

Also, A re-colored dragon alt is also a possibility, since L!F!Corn did that.

I dont think skipping the Staff is a certainty because IS has made weird choices before. Leif has an Bow which is a weird choice for him, but, like Corrin, he has a A Rank in bows in his promoted class, and like Corrin he is an “unpopular” Lord. Chrom and Lucina have Bows, when they also had Lances as options by promotion class.

I dont think popularity certainly incentivizes diversity in weapon usage. because we have had a lot of Weird choices from IS of making a popular character have the same weapon across multiple alts. -> 3H lords, Ike, Eirika and Ephraim had all a repeat of their OG weapons and are far more or just as popular as Micaiah; and even weirder L!F!Corrin, who by CYL and Nintendo magazine poll is more popular then M!Corrin,  has the same weapon type than her fallen version (and still lacks a red alt for her emblem AND had an iconic red weapon associated with her promotion of DarkBlood/Nohr Noble (Dusk Yato)). Also fun fact, F!Corrin counterpart to M!Corrin Staff Rank is a Tome Rank. So it would also be possible for her to have had an red tome alt.

conclusion regarding weapons: IS pretty much spins a Wheel and decides what to do. I think its pretty much a case of...whatever the executives woke up on that day wanting.

(that, of course, doesnt make theorizing what weapon they will have  any less fun xD)

Honestly the only reason why I am certain it is Micaiah is irrational/a F2P technique. In  that if it is not her, it will destroy my will to summon and thus allow me to spend less XD. I have seen people doing it and boy does it works wonders when you arent right.

Going by that (my theory it is Micaiah) I find it unlikely to be Colorless (and thus Staff or colorless tome) only because the other spreads are just That Good^tm.

One of the methods that people used to guess which color the new Leg/Mythic will be is to see which color has a busted spread of colors. And it has been right ever since Edelgard

(The reason for so is that IS seems to have realized that by debutting the hero on a so-so spread, it made people wait for their rerun in order to get them, Bramimond being an example in that his spread was awful (L!Grima) and his rerun spread was godsmacking good (Mila)... pun not intended)

The colorless this time is rather...i wouldnt say weak, because Eir usability is REALLy good and Duma has a nice niche of wrecking people plans(cackles in my AR matches). However, they are fairly outdated in comparation with the other color spreads. So, in the event this leg hero is Micaiah (or Elincia, or Byleth) i dont think they would be colorless because of that.

Oh! Regarding the CYL theory, since the legendaries were introduced in the second year of FEH, I dont consider much broken, since i merely think its always /A/ winner instead of the 1st of each year. Since shuffling of legendaries is possible, (those times when IS changed the calendar lineup), should the Byleths win CYL(which is fairly likely). it would be easy to put them on the next GW. And I also think it will be a theory that will be broken absolutely next year, since I doubt Marianne and Gatekeeper would be viable L!Heroes. I agree with you that is a weak pattern that is likely to be broken.

Counterpoint to Wind F!Byleth ->  Blessings not always end up being the element that is most associated with the Character in the main game. Highly Water themed (and midly Fire themed;) Corrin ended up as Wind; Julia, who has Minor blood of fire and was called “Genealogy’s Fire Emblem sword” was Earth; Eliwood, wielding the fire themed Durandal, was Wind. (tbf this is also a counterpoint to Wind Micaiah, since she has more association with Light and maybe Fire(?) than Wind)

Regarding 3H launching with 3H, besides Edelgard, Claude also debuted with no 3H legendary accompanying him. Annete was there, but other than that, no other 3H unit or legendary was on the banner. In fact, the pattern i do see with 3H legendaries is that their first re-run matches with a release of a Mythic in their color spread. (Edelgard -> Hel ; Dimitri -> Seiros).

I want to highlight that i am not saying it wont happen, but that I lean more towards they keeping a space between 3H legendaries release, in order to long term profits, and to not cause burn-out of 3H content. (or at least decrease people complaining about it; They seem to have learned their lesson with the Fates and Tellius spams.)

Finally,I do think that it is possible for Micaiah to be a Staff and for other characters to be released in this month/banner, mostly it is the premises i chose to apply to this theorizing lead me in a contrary direction xD. You show some good points! (I would love a Dawn Yato Corn and a Staff Micaiah ;-;...)

Extra Tangent: I have absolutely no idea what IS(executives) considers the character is associated with Silver Snow like...

For one side, Seteth makes lip service saying the route lord is Rhea; Rhea presents the choice mirror to Edelgard’s in the route split; the ending cutscene focuses on Rhea character development/closure, but, at the same time, she is Sir Not Appearing for 75% of the route and the rest of the time she is benched.

For another side, Byleth was made to be the lord to Edelgard emperor’s and her rival; has several cutscenes showcasing that; is the “lord” of the route in role sense, but, on the other hand, its more associated with Fire (fire emblem).

Honestly at this point i just dont know what FEH is going to do with them. I think IS is going to make one of Byleth Wind as you said and the other Fire, but which one, i have no idea. I could see too an argument for Ground(since i think at the lack of an Light element for Light element character-focused they pick ground sometimes) too, but yeah. 

I cant believe the true plot twist of GW is gonna be Rhea being the wind legendary breaking all of our theories xD (/j, but can you imagine how funny it would be?)

Marth: “I call sword!  It’s iconic, like me, the mascot the multiverse!”

Eirika: “The hell do you mean ‘mascot of the multiverse?’”

Marth: “I was here first so I am the most important of all!”

Eirika: “Uh-huh.  Anyone have objections to Marth taking sword?”

Marianne: “Well, I wasn’t sure what to take, but I was thinking I could use a sword.  Since my relic weapon is a sword.  And I think people would really like a sword cavalier, since there aren’t many of them.”

Eirika: “Alright, Marianne contests the sword.”

Marth: “No! You can’t take this from me too!  It’s all I have left!”

Marianne: “Oh!  I-I’m so sorry, forget I said anything…”

Eirika: “Complaint withdrawn.  Any other contesting for the sword?”

Gatekeeper: “Nothing to report!”

Eirika: “Then the motion passes, and Marth will take sword.”

Marth: “Yes!”

Eirika: “That leaves blue, green, and colorless.  Any takers?”

Gatekeeper, raising his lance: “Greetings!”

Eirika: “Okay.  Marianne, any opposition?”

Marianne: “I was thinking about blue, based on the holy magic.”

Eirika: “Yes, but that can be Green too, so you have to decide which one you want.”

Marianne: “Um...well, what about you?”

Eirika: “I’m not taking blue.  If you want it you can have it.”

Marianne: “Um...I think I’ll be okay.  He can have that.  If he wants.”

Eirika: “Very well.  Uncontested, Gatekeeper will take Blue as a lance unit.”

Gatekeeper, raising his lance: “Nothing to report!”

Eirika: “That leaves you and me for Green and Colorless, Marianne.”

Marianne: “Oh, well...I don’t really feel like it’s my decision, so...why don’t you pick first?”

Eirika: “Well, Latona and Excalibur are the only sacred twins left from Magvel not in use.  Which are Colorless and Green respectively.  So I could go either way.  But unfortunately, that’s not how this works.  Much as I hate to admit it, you outrank me, so you get first pick.”

Marianne: “Then...maybe I can take Green magic...”

Eirika: *shaking her head ominously*

Marianne: “U-um, no, maybe Colorless is better?  I am a healer, after all.”

Eirika: “That’s a fair pick.  Then I can take Green.  I wonder if Ephraim will give me Garm…”

Marianne: “If you had a preference, you should have just said so…”

Eirika: “Hey, you beat me, fair and square, right?  That means you get first pick, and what matters is that it was your choice, right?”

Marianne: “I-I’m sorry…”

Eirika: “So there we go.  Marth red, Gatekeeper blue, Marianne colorless, me green.  We’ll submit our preferences and hope for the best.”

Marth: “Wait, it’s not guaranteed?!”

Eirika: “Of course not.  Concessions have to be made.  The first CYL, everyone wanted sword.  It was a disaster, and no one came out of that one happy.  But you outrank Marianne and I, so you likely get first pick.”

Marianne: “Well, not always.  CYL1 did prove they do give priority to lower ranked options as needed.”

Marth: “But...my sword...”

Eirika: “Look, I don’t want it.  I can use magic and staves, and am dead last.  I’m not going to be sword.”

Marianne: “And I have Blutgang for sword, holy magic that can be blue or green, and healing for colorless.  I could be anything, and there are two people who mainly use swords.  I don’t think they would give it to me over you, especially when you outrank me.”

Marth: “That is true...okay, that’s a reli-wait.  What do you mean you don’t want it?”

Eirika: “Why would I ever voluntarily make myself the worst of the four?”

Marth: “What does that mean?!”

Eirika: “Sword always sucks, and you will also suck.”

Marth: “That’s not true!  You’re lying!”

Eirika: “Marth, let me level with you.  You’re going to be the billionth sword infantry unit in the game.  There will be almost nothing you could do that sets you apart, especially since Alm exists with a Falchion variant, sealing the dragonslayer focus.  And he was the worst of his batch by far.  Worse, he’s up for a refine just before our Braves arrive.  Not to mention you came in second, so you don’t even get a unique skill to help you stand out like he did.  You’re dead on arrival, dude.”

Marth: “You...you cheated!  You tricked me into take sword!”

Eirika: “Sure did!  Tough shit, loser.”

Marth, crying: “You’ll see!  I’m gonna get a super good Falchion that will totally make me unique and work well, and then you’ll be sorry!”

Marianne: “Wow...thank you, Eirika.”

Eirika: “It’s just the truth.  As long as you take Colorless and stay away from my Green alt!”

Marianne: “U-Understood!”

Gatekeeper, raising hand: “Greetings?”

Eirika: “No, blue sucks, and you’ll suck.”

Dimitri: “I don’t know about that.  Blue has worked well for me.”

Eirika: “Seriously, stop letting people in here!  Do your damn job!”

Gatekeeper: “Nothing to report!”

Dimitri: “I’m just saying, blue turns out well sometimes.”

Eirika: “I guess so!  And hey, he got more votes than you did last year, so I guess he’ll be better than you!”

Dimitri: “Is that so?  Congratulations, then!”

Gatekeeper: “Greetings!”

Eirika: “I hate you people.  Why can’t you be as irritated about this as the rest of us?”

Dimitri: “Because, this event acknowledges everyone.  We’re all popular, so we’re guaranteed alts, including the Braves, eventually.”

Chrom, who’s been waiting four years, and whose game has gotten one (1) alt in two years, and fewer characters on their New Heroes banner: “Yeah...yeah, eventually.”

Marianne, who still is not in the game despite ranking 8th in the female division last year: “Um…”

Eirika, whose game has one of the lowest alt counts, and who’s waited a year and a half for a Duo or Harmonic when her brother was the second to get one: “God I hate your entitled ass.”

Dimitri, whose game got 4 banners exclusive to them and 2 alts last year alone: “What do you mean?  Everyone gets the things they want here, right?”

Eirika: “Just...fuck off already.  The point is I will be the best brave alt.”

Marianne: “But, um...you said Colorless was…”

Eirika: “You’ll be the strongest, but I’ll be the best.  I always get hit with red, and green is the perfect color coverage.  I’ll be getting what’s best for me.”

Marianne: “Oh.  Well, I suppose that is fair…”

Marth, crying: “I hate you all so much!”

Gatekeeper: “Greetings!”

Alm, still crying: “And I’m gonna get an amazing refine and then Micaiah, Eliwood, and Camilla will be sorry!”

Dimitri: “I don’t get why everyone’s so mad.”

Eirika: “God I hate this event.  At least I’ll never have to deal with this shit again...”

Gatekeeper Wins CYL 5

^Gatekeeper wins the Chose Your Legends 5 poll by a considerable margin.

On February 1st, the Gatekeeper character officially won Fire Emblem Heroes’ newest internet poll. 

About once a year, the mobile gacha game Fire Emblem Heroes— a spin-off of the long running Fantasy chess-like game series Fire Emblem— hosts an internet poll, Choose Your Legends (CYL). The top two male and female characters get “brave” editions in the game, whether or not the character is already in the game. The very first CYL, for example, was won by Lyn from Fire Emblem: the Blazing Blade, and thus Lyn: Brave Lady was added. Now there are currently seven different versions of Lyn floating around in the game currently. That is to say, repetition is the norm when it comes to adding brave heroes. 

The 5th CYL, however, has made history. The person with the most votes is the Gatekeeper from Fire Emblem:Three Houses. What’s notable about the Gatekeeper is that, unlike every other CYL winner, the Gatekeeper is not a playable character in his base game. In fact, his inclusion in the Fire Emblem Heroes will, at this rate, be the first time he is playable in any video game. Now there is a card of him in the trading card game Fire Emblem: Cipher, but because his card cannot attack and because just about no one outside Japan cares about Cipher, I’m still tempted to call Heroes the first game the Gatekeeper is playable in. 

The real shock came days before on January 25th, however, when Fire Emblem Heroes released the interim results. The Gatekeeper was higher than anyone would have expected. His lead in the interim likely resulted in more support. A figure in the Fire Emblem community, Bismix, made a video after the interim results highlighting the conflict between supporters of the Gatekeeper and supporters of Chrom, a fan favourite character, appearing in the iconic Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and high ranking in every other CYL event.

Now what’s so important about the Gatekeeper? The Gatekeeper, on top of being completely unplayable, is regarded as a meme by the community. Three Houses is a game all about war dividing all of society, from tearing student from teacher and pitting church against government, yet the Gatekeeper remains a comically calm and collected figure throughout it all. He stays in the exact same spot throughout the entirety of the game and almost always greets the player with his quirky "Greetings, Professor! Nothing to Report!" His amiable nature and contagiously positive attitude compliments his firm determination to protect the Monastery from evil, despite never taking arms. Thus, the Gatekeeper’s winning is essentially one big joke. An anonymous fan of Three Houses said “It’s kinda funny that the Gatekeeper won.” 

Of course there are three other winners, series figure Marth from Shadow Dragon, Eirika from Sacred Stones, and Marianne also from Three Houses. The Gatekeeper, however, got much more votes than his competitors, marking him as the most popular. Fire Emblem fans asked seemed to not care about the other winners, one not even being able to name most of them.
