just like. imagine tucker being thrown around as an ambassador just constantly being lived from place to place surrounded by aliens and people he can barely understand because of even when they’re not speaking a different language he’s so different from them that they might as well be. and he wants to be there for his son but he have absolutely no idea what he’s doing and there’s so much pressure and he’s trying to maintain his chill cool persona but it’s so close to cracking. until finally he’s sent to a site and the leader of the dig team there just seems so. normal. he’s just a normal guy with kind of a short temper and he’s so easy to talk to compared to the constant political dances tucker was barely keeping up with before. and for the first in over a year tucker unclenches, because he actually has someone he can consider a friend.

and then his friend tries to kill him

wait oh my god I was talking to my buddy and, like I mentioned the similarities CT/IL and Felix have (dudes with brown hair and undercuts who worked for Charon and betrayed tucker) . And just like.

Tucker looking at Felix (after the reveal of him playing them for fools) and he can’t help but remember CT, it’s like a horrible repeat of what happened at the temple (not exactly, but it’s hard not to notice some of the similarities)

the reason why out of all of tucker’s line of shitty boyfriends templetucker is the one that compels me by far the most as an actual ship is because. like. they’re both sim troopers! they come from the same place and kind of have the same base desire? “i just want to stand around and talk to my friend but he’s gone now” like… tell me you cannot picture temple opening up about biff in a way to relate to tucker losing church and finding himself for the first time he lost him actually being able to process his real emotions about it instead of covering it up with dramatic ~evil villain~ reactions. despite his act of seducing tucker being done in an attempt to use and manipulate him there’s basically no way that temple did not genuinely like tucker and wouldn’t actually fall for him.

also shoutout to the half serious ctucker transfem au headcanon whatever thing that we and the rest of worm bucket came up with like two nights ago. we all went "estrogen would fix her" then said "no actually hold on she would still suck just as bad just still be a girl." we all unanimously agreed she wouldnt even change her name. legit the funniest thing ive heard all month

salt and the sea chapter 4: behind the scenes director's commentary

i cannot understate how much fucking trouble this chapter draft gave us while we were writing it. It took us a month to post c4 for a reason. This thing kicked our ass so hard that I'm writing a whole fucking post about it to complain about it.

here is a brief overview of some of the problems we had while writing this:

rampant continuity errors

in-universe justification of plot events

realized our characterization of tucker was waaay off, did some digging to try and figure out what he had going on, then realized that not only had we completely misjudged his motives, we had also WILDLY overestimated how emotionally competent he was.

like seriously we read him so bad it constitutes a literal crime

in the middle of writing the fic. Which was already published. So we had to do a full 180 on basically everything about this guy to keep his pov accurate AND find a way to justify it within the story as well.

it was, as one could expect, literal hell.

so our problem with characterizing ctucker was we went the normal rational route and assumed that his actions were due to some sort of trauma and that he was at least somewhat aware of what he was doing, like a smart person.

WRONG

this man is an ANNOYING STUBBORN SELFISH PETTY IDIOT ASSHOLE who does not give a shit about ANYTHING beyond himself.

we gave him way too much grace. we were too nice to him. the way ctucker operates is so absolutely foreign to us that it took us a full THREE MONTHS into writing this fic to even CONSIDER the possibility that he just Did Not Care. because thats Stupid and surely, we thought, nobody can be That Fucking Stupid.

we were very, very wrong.

the universe basically said "ok well congratulations you figured out that your characterization of this character is horribly wrong and now you have to fix it. You wrote a whole fucking chapter thats better yhan yhe previous 3 but oh no, what's this, you have to justify this sudden total 180 in thought process and emotions in-universe? Go fuck yourself. Literally die. I want you to hump a poison-ivy-covered oak tree, naked, then run through downtown screaming that you want to marry Elon Musk. It would hurt less."

we did figure it out eventually btw

but it sucked the whole time
