CTRL Review: AI Courts Ananya Pandey in a ‘Searching’ Meets ‘Red Rose’ Thriller
In CTRL, Ananya Pandey plays an influencer caught in an AI-driven nightmare. The screenlife format entertains initially, but the far-fetched mystery and inconsistent pacing dull the impact.
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. Sneha Jaiswal (Twitter | Instagram) One of the worst things that can happen to an influencer whose romantic life is the biggest USP of their online brand is a breakup. Nella Awasthi (Ananya Pandey), who runs a popular video channel called ‘NJOY’ with her boyfriend Joe Mascarenhas (Vihaan Samat), was hoping for a ‘happily ever after,’ an expectation that’s shattered when…

fun fact i've been reading the RFEF's child safeguarding policy (in spanish). notably, it's only one year old (there wasn't one before this) and it has no mention of children's work hours (it does mention in passing some forms of overtraining, but only in 'dangerous' conditions or while sick/injured) .................. unicef literally has policy on this (there's also an international body with policy on this). this does not comply to international child safeguarding standards LOL

she's in ctrl: how women can take back tech // anne-marie imafidon
first published: 2022 read: 10 may 2024 – 19 may 2024 pages: 418 format: e-book
genres: non-fiction; STEM (technology, women in STEM); feminism favourite character(s): n/a least favourite character(s): n/a
rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 thoughts: let me preface this by saying my rating has much more to do with me being outside the target audience than it does the quality of the book. i added she's in ctrl to my list as i have heard of anne-marie over the years, i think she's hugely inspiring and wanted to hear more from her. i was also lucky enough to hear her talk (about the book and her life) at an event hosted by the trouble club around this time last year, and again it was wonderful hearing about her experiences and her mission to get more (young) women involved in the tech space. the book was a great continuation of this... but i realised i'm not that interested in tech.
the book looks at the past, present and future of tech, and pairs this with achievable ways to begin your own journey into tech, whether that's learning and becoming more engaged, seeking a tech career, or wanting to create your own tech as an entrepreneur or volunteer. in this sense, it was mostly faultless. it was a little repetitive at times, but i really enjoyed learning more about the contributions of women in tech, both past ones that have gone unacknowledged, and of women carving their own spaces in the present day. one thing that was a pet peeve was the arbitrary and repeated substitution of the word 'control' in the text for 'CTRL', which was not a big deal in the scheme of things but it started to bug me quite early on.
because of this, i think she's in ctrl is a great starting place if you are seeking a gateway into the tech space as a woman, and if you can it's probably worth checking out her Stemettes group as well. but i'm not really one to engage that heavily with tech, so i began to lose some interest as i kept reading. i think the book encouraged me to simply be increasingly aware of tech developments that are happening now and that influence our present and our future. and one thing it definitely did was got me to finally start taking lessons to learn python, which had been one of my goals for this year, so thank you anne-marie for giving me that push! who knows, maybe a year from now with python under my belt and this book in my repertoire, my opinions on how i view and enjoy tech will have changed entirely :)
