As much as I love reading, sometimes visual art really does have an impact so much greater than the text.

I was just browsing Crier’s War fanart and I was surprised at how young Ayla looks in so much of it.  I wondered why the artists felt the need to make her smaller and more innocent-looking, and why so many seemed to have made the same decision.  It really took me a second to connect that she is that young.

The text repeatedly emphasizes that she’s only 16, and even then she’s small for her age.  She is young.  And yet I suppose my mental image was Generic Action Hero Lady because that’s how it always is.  Actually seeing her that young and small made it real in a way that the text never made me realize.

I’m literally old enough to be her parent, of course she’s going to look young.
