You know those deals where like... you've had something in mind for An Amount of time, but one day your brain just kinda finally figures out how to put it into words. Had that today with an aspect of Chainshipping that just (ONE OF THE MANY) things I so dearly love about them, y’know,, and just. Kinda discussing how I personally enjoy portraying/characterizing them in a world where they've survived their game, and both have to try to live and function again after going through something so unimaginable together.

But uh. It's just the fact that their worst traits and wrongdoings were damn near showcased during their ordeal together, and that they both witnessed one another in dire, horrific circumstances: how they broke down, how they acted in desperation, what they chose to disclose and what had to be forced out of them... etc, etc, etc.

So it just.,, makes it all the more impactful (to me, at least) to think about them reconnecting, and getting to know one another on far more casual terms. Up until then, they'd only experienced one another while they were both unhappy with their respective lives, all while also being caught in this horrible death game, so y’know- there's still a whole lot of ground to cover with one another,

Because despite seeing the worst of each other, there's still just... this desire, this longing, this yearning that has only been building and building ever since that day. Despite meeting each other at their lowest, they want to help one another reach their highest, y’know... Even if just one step at a time.

It just. Makes me feel such a way,

Okay I might just be reading too much into this. But while I was watching the episode *cough cough* procrastinating *cough cough I realised that they don't show how the Doctor and Ruby got there.

And I know that it's probably just meant to be vaguely like 'they just went for fun'.

BUT this is the third episode in a row where we haven't seen them arrive. And for 73 yards it was clearly a doctor who episode when it started but it immediately gets rid of the doctor. ( I know that for 73 yards and for dot and bubble it was because Ncuti Gatwa was filming other stuff but let me cook) In Dot and Bubble you could effectively be forgiven for assuming that it was a random Black Mirror episode or something similar until the Doctor turns up, and tbh if you were just flicking through channels and haven't been watching Doctor Who you could probably basically not know for much longer. In Rogue they are just there, except for the title screen (the same for dot and bubble) you could basically watch it as a Bridgerton episode until the Chuldur turn up.

(And there's whole other rant about how the Chuldur fits into the theory about this basically being a TV show within a TV show, I don't know the name for this theory)

But anyway these episodes are increasingly separated from the Doctor and Ruby as plot points particularly in the beginning of episodes. They are more and more like an excuse to tell the story or explore the topic that the writers want to explore. Which isn't totally different from the occasional episode of previous series, but this is a lot more in my memory at least from previous series. So it feels a lot like they are skimming over the more sci-fi doctor who elements. Which fits in in my mind to the idea that the 'One who waits' is a representation of story telling. I've seen theories that it's Ruby but she doesn't know it which makes sense, I think it would also make sense for it to be her parent(s) who left her, or alternatively just it's own thing all together. But it feels very like that bit where Amy is living a life and starts to realise it's all fake.

The narrowing down of these episodes into not showing them arriving, and at least in Rogue - I can't remember in the others - not showing them leaving the story, feels very different.

It feels more and more like story telling. They have covered fairy tales, Period pieces/Romance, Dystopia, War/SciFi, Musicals, Political Drama. They are also showing the doctor playing his role, something that we see companions doing often enough but we seldom see the doctor doing it.

In Space Babies he is scared of a new creature. In the Devil's Code he sings a song that makes little sense in the story, he doesn't question the road making noise. In Boom he's more himself but it's also the closes to his 'normal' environment. In 73 Yards they just fully remove him from the story, which I realise was done for filming requirements but would have been so interesting to see the doctor in a Political drama. In Dot and Bubble he plays the role of the outsider bringing information to those living under a Dystopia, how is he UNABLE to access the inside, sure he plays a role that's fairly similar to himself but Doctor Who is really Dystopian.

In Rogue he is becoming more and more his role, he is playing the role of a sort of Elizabeth Bennet style character, a strong romantic interest for the brooding man. Which is great, he makes fun of the genre, but he is hyper aware of the genre and still ends up in its pitfalls. He trusts a man so quickly he ends up handing over his sonic, he gets proposed to and basically immediately accepts. Now I am really hoping that Rogue gets to stay around I really liked him as a character, regardless of which theory of his identity if any are true. But the Doctors reaction to him is still a little out of character, he is feeling what he is SUPPOSED to feel and he is acting how he is SUPPOSED to act.

It just feels to me like an increasing number of these episodes are more and more story like and more and more separated from the more Doctor Who elements. And the lack of an introduction of how they get there, and the lack of them leaving in the TARDIS is so unusual to me and stands out to my brain so much.

It feels like they are removing elements that don't fit the genre. Anyway not sure if that makes any sense but I'm vibing with it.

Mahakumbh Mela: The Once-In-144 year event, mixing Faith and Science!

aka- Me losing my mind over the science and logistics and geeking out about space for a full 15 paragraphs!

Before I start, I'll give a brief overview of what Kumbh Mela is for all my Non-Indian, Non-hindu friends and Indian-Hindus (like me) that didn't know much about this.

Kumbh Mela (or Kumbha Mela) is a major Hindu pilgrimage taken by devout followers every 12 years to mark one revolution of Brihaspati (Jupiter). There's several types of Kumbhs outside of the 12-yearly cycle that is the Ardh (half), celebrated every 6 years and Maha (major), celebrated every 144 years!

The last one is the one we have this year!!! It's been 144 years since that happened- ie. The last Mahakumbh in Prayagraj was in 1881!

Anyway there's religious and cultural significances that I'm not the best person to explain but you can read it in articles and all- IM HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE SCIENCE AND THE COOLNESS OF THE EVENT!!

Okay so despite being a religious festival there's a significant amount of cool science here-

It takes Jupiter approximately 12 Earth years (4333 days) to travel once around the Sun. That's the event thats marked by each Kumbh mela, which means we can literally calculate the years when this happened all the way back to when this festival started!!!!

Also know why the Mahakumbh is every 144 years? It's cause there's 12 cycles of revolutions that's happened in those years making it extra culturally significant but ya know what that means?

Jupiter's been around the Sun about 12 times since 1881!!!!

Like cmon that's such a cool fact to know! I love that! Fck yeah I didn't need that information but I love that wooo!

The Kumbh Mela is also one of the largest peaceful gathering of people in the world and the world's largest congregation of religious pilgrims!

THERE WERE 50 MILLION PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE IN 2019???!?!?!

50 fcking million! That's the largest public gathering of Hindus ever recorded- and guess what it's only estimated to increase.

Anyway yes this year from Jan 13th to Feb 26th is going to be insane in Allahabad. The amount of organization and logistics of planning and maintaining order with that huge a crowd is going to be insane!

It's approximated about 40 crore (400 million) people will show up to Prayagraj, Allahabad for this once in a lifetime event!

Sorry I'm just so geeking out over how huge this is. Like I'm an Atheist but the sheer devotion in that many people just woah!

So Ko'jin is worshipped as a moon god, right?

What kind of stories do people come up with? Like do they say the craters are his beds? Do they say his power is weaker on the new moon? That he can't protect you on cloudy night (because he can't see you)?

Ty for the ask! I will do my best to answer this but it’ll probably only be like… half answering your questions here and mostly me yapping about Ko’jin’s overall role.

Ko’jin’s whole gist as a deity is protection of spirits and Termina as a whole more than anything. Often times if you hear stories of Ko’jin, you’re only really hearing about the Moon Serpent. It’s the most common form the people of Termina ever see of him. Rarely do they ever see the actual deity.

Most people who tend to openly talk about the serpent and spread stories are soldiers (in and out of Termina). While he protects Termina, its widely believed he primarily protects spirits or is at least a guide for them. So many soldiers often give him offerings when/after they’re drafted in hopes that, if they do die on the field, then the serpent will guide them to a good afterlife.

(His deal with spirits is one half of his “judgement” title, the other being his role of a bounty hunter of sorts.)

Stories that are usually given to children or general public are usually legends of his grand battles with other deities done in the protection of Termina. Or stories to explain meteor showers. This also relates to Moon’s Tears which is often believed to be from the serpent falling. So the stone itself is highly sought after because its often thought it would protect them. (It wouldn’t be completely wrong to assume this either since he does technically have an odd effect on those rocks and they have a strong magic.)

Also I wanted to poke the “power is weaker on new moons” thing because its mostly true. His followers mostly give him offerings/pray to him at shrines and whatnot during full moons (the festival dedicated to his return is usually on a super moon, which happens over termina yearly). The fuller the moon the more he’s able to channel his powers and the faster he can regenerate magic, which is why the Moon Serpent primarily appears on full moons (and why it’s a common belief that he’s weaker on new moons).

Also his “job” that he has regarding spirits and protecting or guiding them. After his return he has a lot of catching up to do, like a lot. He travels the world in the form of the Moon Serpent to collect spirits (and poes) and bring safely them to an “afterlife”. I really want to get into this bit more eventually as it plays into the rest of the au a lot and how it works. But I’m unsure if I should atm. Ig that’d depend if anyone wants to hear me yap about that too.

^ basically theres no way any of his followers would even know whats actually happening outside of speculation. They take what they do see (the serpent guiding spirits, the serpent protecting termina, the serpent descending from the full moon) and base their stories and faith off that (as well as any historical records and artifacts, which I think a lot of legends would have come from).

Back to my conclave thoughts! Spoiler ahead ofc

Something i adored was the shot of them voting one last time and lawrence looking up at the hole in the wall from the terrorist attack letting light enter the room, beautiful metaphorically and also the perfect shot of the micheangelo’s fresco with jesus turning to the light entering from the hole in the wall

Also how they were able to showcase the nuns and their role in the church. Them being silent all the time but also showing them cooking and cleaning and eveything, its them taking care of the cardinals, of the church, but they’re ofc ignored, they’re in the background.

Not only showing us the roles of nuns in the church but of women in general. Not only in the vaticane but in every little church around the world! Yes they cant become priests but whos attending masses? Women. Who’s cleaning every church in italy for free usually? La perpetua, women once again. Its women labour and work for free most of the time that are the backbone of the community, they are the reason why going to church is a social athering situation, its their work for the community that goes largely under appreciated. So really liked how they depicted nuns doing the same thing as your random italian woman in their forties going to church and then cooking and cleaning for everyone basically

But also i can’t help but ask myself what was the point of the movie in the end? Maybe i should read the book and I’m open to discussion! Id love to talk about this more! But them choosing this modern day saint as the pope. Why? Is this a way to absolve from their sins and wrongdoings that were shown and revealed to the entire conclave by lawrence? Like choosing the good guy??

I was so hyped when they showed bellini, a liberal cardinal, one of the “good ones” accepting money to elect tremblay, like that was shocking but also so realistic! Not even the good guy are truly good there, they wouldnt be in the conclave if they were, the whole ‘we have to choose the less evil option’ was all fake! Bellini was getting money and power out of it! Perfect brilliant yes thats exactly what would happen there! Even the good ones cant escape the mafia style and corrupted behaviour in the church. (Comportamento omertoso uno dopo l’altro for my italians around! Insane that theres not a real translation for omertoso in english like thats an extremely unique and precise word)

And then them choosing benitez the good guy after that last speech. Were they ashamed of their previous actions and thats why they elected him? How fid that terrible group of people elect Benitez? Co i cant believe they were just mi ed bu his speech i cant believe it. And Benitez this perfect saint! Like i cant believe it once again

So yes! Very beautiful movie and very beautiful dialogue! Im just confused about the why, what was the point they were truing to make? And if the point was theres still hope in the church then do we really need this type of message?
