Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Be safe, eat well, have fun, and read some fic during your food coma! I've got three Steve/Eddie fics for Stranger Things, and an assortment of Queen's Thief fics because Yuletide always sends me down the small fandoms rabbit hole.

The first time Eddie sees Steve Harrington with his face smashed in, he’s at the corner store off 6th Street choosing a frozen meal to bring home.

Really great AU where Eddie keeps running into badly-injured Steve after each season's big fight. This author writes them beautifully, in all their dorky, pining, good-hearted, accidental-hero glory.

The thing was, these popular types, the Royalty of High School Society? They just wanted to be entertained. They wanted something to break though the dull monotony of life at the top of the food chain, and if nothing happened to catch their interest, they made their own fun. Good thing Eddie was unparalleled at keeping little sheeps entertained.

Exactly the kind of over-dramatic thing Eddie would do to protect his friends, and I loved how he slowly figures out that Steve is a good guy (and then falls for him, obvs).

The first story is a really hot PWP before the big S4 battle, and the second is a lovely Wayne outsider-POV while Eddie is in the hospital.

Fist Fights and Fan Fiction: The Complicated Legacy of Eugenides & Irene by eponymiad

Who doesn't know Shakespeare's most famous romance, Eugenides & Irene? Shakespeare pulled his story from the real Eugenides the Great and Attolia Irene, a king and queen who reigned over what is now modern-day Ephestalia. Shakespeare’s fictionalization told a grand—if deeply fraught—love story, but the real life Eugenides and Irene’s love story is hotly debated by academics and the chronically online alike. Nowhere is this clearer than the talk page of the “Attolia (country)” Wikipedia article, where debates about whether Eugenides and Irene were ever truly in love have raged on since the site’s inception. We dug into why this long-dead couple inspired such controversial historical takes and found ourselves neck deep in academic fist fights, fanfiction, and the weirdest plot twist about my own past.

I love a good faux-academia story, and this canon is a perfect choice for that kind of outsider POV.

There and Back Again by ama (Costis/Kamet)

After delivering his report to Eugenides, Costis goes home to visit his family. He wrestles with the new person he has become since he saw them last, the secrets he should reveal and the ones he can't, and his uncertain relationship with Kamet, who probably hates him. And looming over all of it is the king's mysterious suggestion about a ship he may or may not be taking to Roa.

Excellent look at Costis's side of that separation in TAT.

Not-Sunday Snippet Tag Game

I've never done one of these before 😱 But @impishtubist tagged me when we were writing side-by-side last weekend and since I am only now coming back to the fic I was working on then, here: have the snippet that I left off on as I try to get back into this story...

“I am happy for you, Kamet,” Costis said quietly when I was finished, and I drew my gaze down from where it had been flitting amongst the rafters overhead to settle on his face.

In the wavering shadows of the lamplight, my Attolian looked almost ethereal, ageless and calm as the carved figure of a god in a temple, but I knew him so well that I could hear his smile in his voice and see it in his eyes. Looking at him, I felt the warmth that he kindles in me spreading unchecked until I was positively glowing with the love of him.

The pairing is Costis/Kamet from The Queen's Thief novels by Megan Whalen Turner, set sometime post-canon.

I tried to do a round up of the cast and stretch my character design skills in the first one and while there are definitely some characters I’d rework (Sophos, Kamet, and Costis please forgive me) I really like how others came out. You can really see the features of my version of Gen solidifying. The right was my first attempt at a more realistic portrait style with an older and more stately and ruthless Attolis.

Obviously i am obsessed with the scene on the dock at the end of TaT but it's just so good. They're so friggin fond of each other. "Gods forbid you should look like a fool, Costis." Costis comparing the two of them to their blorbos from their clay tablets. Obviously the "Idiot. Us." They're so happy to see each other and it makes me lose my beans

when i read Thick as Thieves, i didn't come away with the impression that Costis was having a great time for most of the book. he does seem to be more in his element than he was during The King of Attolia (not a high bar!), and clearly feels more at home when he's fighting and hiking and hunting vs. being a pawn in court intrigue where he has very little control over what's happening to him

BUT. while Kamet was definitely the more stressed of the two during their road trip for a variety of reasons, i think Costis was also pretty stressed out at times! he finds out early on that his charge cannot physically defend himself! he has to fight a lion! he gets captured by slavers! he almost dies of a fever! Costis does a pretty good job of staying calm for Kamet’s sake but no way he wasn’t internally freaking out at least a little when he had to give Kamet stitches, or during any number of other dangerous situations they find themselves in

i also think it's easy to overestimate how close Costis thinks he and Kamet are at the beginning of the story. he can DEFINITELY tell that Kamet thinks he's a complete dumbass at first (they literally talk about this), and i'm sure he can also tell that Kamet is wary of him and does not trust him initially! he and Kamet are definitely not on the same page about things for much of the book - we know that Costis feels betrayed when he learns that Kamet kept so much from him - but i'm also certain their relationship changed over time in Costis' mind too

I don't know where it is, but someone said Irene went out of her way to touch Gen 6 times in Queen of Attolia, which is a lot for someone who says she doesn't love him, but like. No one ever talks about kamet and costis. Every time kamet gets dizzy or injured, or they have to "pretend" to be friends, or costis gets injured, the other is so ready to physically help them. When they end up in the water, kamet clings to costis's neck. When he gets hit on the head, costis literally hugs him for a looooong time. And you wanna say kamet hates him? You wanna say there are any negative feelings between them? The way they both go out of their way to always be physically supporting the other.
