Experiment.
Plant a garden gnome “sculpture” in the 2014 Sculptures by the Sea.
Subject.
A $5.99 garden gnome from Bunnings - spray painted and written on in black felt pen.
What is Art?
People began to comment on this ‘sculpture’ during the spray painting process. We told them it was an ‘art’ project - their acceptance only reinforcing that people really do see what they want to see. And of course the social acceptance rule of - who wants to be the only one who doesn’t ‘get’ art - so just agree and fake understanding (for more on this visit an art gallery and look for 1 face that openly says 'what the fuck am I looking at?').
Perhaps most surprising -  as time went on, we too began to see our ‘work’ as art. A realisation that hit me as I held a light reflector during our photoshoot of the Bunnings gnome.
The idea wasn’t to ruffle any feathers it was merely to see what is considered art and to prove that if you educate people on something long enough, it’s pretty easy to convince them to see what you want them to see. Hey, we even fooled ourselves- the most unexpected part of the experiment.
Ironically he was removed pretty soon after this seaside implementation, (probably by a panicked security guard) - proving that, in this case, life was very short.
