headache
i typed this out after downing a coffee, forgetting i'm very sensitive to caffeine, forgot to save but then my laptop restarted for an update? so now i'm here four hours later bc i gave up on life, not so hopped up on caffeine but with a major headache and also it's 1am. enjoy!
content: stark!reader, fluff n cuddles, peter being a good boyfriend (tm)
warnings: lapslock, i've had to write this twice so i'm angry, post-endgame and yes this follows canon i'm sorry, feels, all the feels, angst and consequences of death, Tension
word count: probably less than my original draft (1528 words)
--
the jet ride back to the newly rebuilt avengers compound was quiet. the mission the reformed avengers had just been on was successful, an infiltration of a loose hydra camp, but there was a big hole in the team that had become apparent as soon as the mission had begun that left everyone in a tense silence.
missions were going to be very, very difficult now.  teamwork-wise and mentally. emotionally. it had been, what, a year or so since your dad had... well, anyway. it seemed like such a long time ago- it was a long time ago- but you had been itching to go back out and do avenger-y things for months. leave it up to the starks to distract themselves from grief and pain by working their asses off. you had been tinkering, toying with your dad's old ideas, doing some minor patrolling stuff for a year, and god was it not enough to keep you distracted.
but then you had actually taken on the mission and then everyone noticed that there were a few missing links that almost cost the team the victory. your dad had been a rock, a point of leadership, an active brain on the team. capsicle had been someone steady, brave, always willing to take on the hard jobs. and nat- nat- she'd take out a room full of men three times her size with ease and still have breath to keep going until every last man was down. sparklefingers was off in space with a rodent, a robot, and a lovesick asshole; that marvel lady had disappeared as soon as she could; the wizard was back at his boys' club; robin hood had officially retired, even leaving his bow behind for the rustic life; and orange slices had said something about "making up for lost time" with his daughter, leaving only you, captain birdman, edgy amnesiac, smart hulk and a handful of ironsuits you'd created over your little break, to regroup and do the mission.
and peter, of course. you could never forget about peter. especially not when he was sitting next to you, your hand in his, jaw clenched, staring at his lap.
the poor kid. you knew your dad was also kind of his dad, the only father figure he'd had since ben. the kid kept losing father figures- probably some kind of curse, you had reasoned with yourself, because this was getting out of hand. you had been by his side when he decided to return to spider-man-ing, a month or two after your dad had... yup. done that thing. he had been by your side when you went into your dad's lab in his lakehouse for the first time since the incident, some four months later. you had his back after the whole mysterio-then-court scenario. he had your back when you had your first major panic attack because you realised that you just couldn't cope. you had each other's backs, you had for three, well, technically eight years now. since just after peter had been taken on by your dad to beat some sense into the others in germany.
coming back from the blip was weird. the entire situation was weird. you had been blipped, dusted, gone, worried and confused about your father being on a giant donut in space with peter, and then you had come back five years later lying on your dusty, unused-for-five-years bed, then the compound was blown to smithereens, you were saved by your suit that you still had on after helping keep the wizard safe, discovered your dad had moved out to the country and had also had another kid- who you loved to bits, of course you did- and also your dad had invented time travel.
and then he was gone, forever.
so yeah. massive hole in the team, everyone was quiet, peter looked like he was going to throw up, you were trying not to cry.
you realised peter was looking at you, and you had been staring at him for a little too long. he squeezed your hand, his eyebrows raised slightly. he looked like a kicked puppy, and oh god, your heart hurt.
"sorry," you mumbled, looking away. sam raised his head but averted his eyes when you accidentally made eye contact. you felt a headache coming on- all this stress about the mission and hole-in-the-team stuff was not good for your physical, emotional or mental health. you rested your head on peter's shoulder, feeling his head rest on yours in return. you closed your eyes, tuning out the sound of the quinjet, just focusing on your breath and peter's soft circles that he was rubbing into your hand.
at some point, you drifted off because you awoke to peter gently nudging your shoulder, the quinjet landing. you blinked blearily at him.
"you okay?" he asked, cupping your cheek. you closed your eyes again and leant into his hand.
"headache," you mumbled, turning your face into his hand and kissing it a light kiss. "i'll be okay."
as soon as you stood up to get out of the quinjet though, a wave of nausea washed over you, forcing you to sit back down.
"or not."
peter rushed to pull you up gently, wrapping an arm around your shoulder as he held both of your bags in his other hand. he helped you out of the quinjet, into the compound and up to your room.
exhausted and sore, your head pounding like nothing else, you collapsed on your bed, absentmindedly taking off your wrist cuffs with your nanosuit in them, kicking off your shoes. peter puttered around, putting his bag down then your bag down then taking off his webshooters, shoes and jacket, pacing the room looking at you worriedly.
"do you need anything? like- like aspirin or water or juice or music? i head whale noises can help with a headache and-"
"peter," you mumbled.
"- but i haven't had a headache since i got my powers so i kind of don't know what to do and-"
"peter," you said, a little louder.
"-  i think i should get you some aspirin, yeah, and i'll close the curtains, and-"
"peter!" you called, regretting it as your head pounded particularly hard. peter stopped pacing, and looked at you. "stop pacing, you're giving me motion sickness. and please- just keep it down, i just need quiet okay? you can go get what you want, some aspirin would be nice, and a gatorade too. but please calm down. it's just a headache, i'm tense and stressed. it'll go away soon."
peter nodded and rushed out of the room. you lay on your back with a small groan, staring up at the plain white ceiling of your room. before the compound had been destroyed, you'd put glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling of your bedroom with your dad, and you could look up and stare at the fake constellation stories you had made, giggling with your dad. now the ceiling was empty, strange, unfamiliar. everything was- you had lost almost everything that night. your eyes burned with tears, which you wiped away, keeping your hand over your eyes, fighting the need to throw up.
a few minutes later, you heard your door swing open as peter reentered. you took your hand away from your face and looked at him, balancing two boxes of aspirin and four bottles of gatorade in different colours. he smiled at you gently as he put the stuff on your bedside table.
"let's get you sitting up, yeah?" he whispered, the look in his eyes oh so tender. he sat behind you, resting your back and head on his side so you didn't have to move too much and took out two small aspirin tablets. "i didn't know which colour gatorade you wanted so i got you all of them."
"i'll have the red one, thanks," you replied, taking the tablets and then the gatorade that peter opened, swallowing the pills with a large mouthful of the drink.
you sighed and moved so that you were lying in his lap and looked up at him. you giggled.
"what?" he asked, and you raised a hand to poke at his jaw.
"how do you not even have a double chin from this angle?" you pouted, "it's not fair."
"spiders," he replied, "they tend to do that to you."
you giggled again and sighed again, closing your eyes.
"i should go," peter whispered, raising your head so he could slip away from under you. "you want quiet, yeah?"
"i never said i didn't want you in here," you muttered. "i'm in pain, comfort me."
peter grinned and obliged, maneuvering you so you were lying under your blankets then slipping in next to you. he lay your head on his chest and wrapped an arm behind your neck so you were secure. you rolled onto your side, an ear to his heart. his heartbeat was so steady, as usual.
"i love you, and want you to know that you did great today," peter mumbled, stroking your hair.
"love you too. you also did really well. thanks for having my back."
"any time."

hey uhhh idk if you write this kind of thing, but i have an alcohol problem. in the past i’ve found your writing about depression really validating bc i’m a big Queen fan and it kind of... normalises my issues? idk, i just wondered if you’d ever write about alcoholism? maybe the band coming to terms with the fact that the affected member isn’t just a “party animal” and actually has an addiction, then getting them help? yh sorry if this is a weird ask 😅

John’s eyes fluttered open, the room still spinning, the bathroom lights looking like the spotlights on stage. His cheek was cold and flush against the rim of the toilet seat, his body hunched over it. He spit the foul taste from his mouth into the bowl, lifting his heavy head up, to look over at Roger who was standing by the door.
“At least you made it this time,” Roger said with a chuckle. John smiled at him, nodding slowly in agreement. Throwing up in anything but a toilet or trash can was a definite way to end a party and ruin the mood. And the both of them still had a lot more dancing and drinking to do.
Roger helped him up, John flushing the toilet before washing his hands and rinsing his mouth. The nausea was already fading. A good puke was all it took to get back in the game. It worked nearly every time.
Roger pat John’s back as they walked back out into the party, John intent on keeping up his antics. One instance of vomiting was not going to keep him from participating in this rager.
The music blasted, the bass rattling the windows of Freddie’s house. Colored lights spun all around the room, illuminating the party goers smiles and laughs. The dance floor, which was once Freddie’s living room was packed with hot bodies all pressed against each other, writhing and swinging to the beat that was almost too loud to be heard. Hands groped and pushed, feet shuffling. Heads were thrown back, liquid courage streaming into open mouths.
John lost Roger in the crowd, the blond probably craving another fix of the white stuff going around like candy. John needed his own fix, so he headed for the makeshift bar. One plastic cup, a dash of orange juice and a helping of vodka. His heart sped up as it slithered down his throat, nestling into his irritated and hot stomach. Immediately, the warmth spread through his core, his limbs beginning to feel like lead again, his mind beginning to fog.
He made himself another, forgoing the orange juice in favor of plain vodka. He let out a fiery sigh, now ready to join the others on the floor.
He floated over to a familiar puff of curly hair, a loopy smile on his face.
“Enjoying yourself, John?” Brian yelled over the music.
John began to sway side to side, the music dictating his every move. “Yes,” he said with a bubbly giggle.
Brian couldn’t hear him but figured he was. He continued on with his awkward dancing, his hands in the air, unknowingly moving away from John.
John didn’t care. He let himself get carried away by the funk, his knees bending, shoulders rolling, head bopping. He felt careless and free. He danced up women and men alike, accepting every drink that was pushed into his hands. He was rained with cigarettes and even found his way back to Roger, his nose red and white.
The room was ill-lit, but Roger’s eyes looked black, consumed by the pupil. “Want some?” he asked, holding up a plate. John held up his cup, graciously filled with brandy. He shimmied away, working his way over to Freddie, half naked and drenched in sweat from nonstop dancing.
John wrapped his arm around Freddie’s waist, startling the singer. Freddie playfully slapped John’s shoulder, saying, “You scared me! How’re you holding up, Deaks?” John just hummed the lyrics in response, too far gone to make any sensical words. Freddie found the answer sufficient, letting the two of them bop together to the music for a bit before scampering off to make out with Jim again.
John downed the last of his brandy, the world beginning to spin again. He laughed, unsteadily walking back to the bar for a refill. He could barely coordinate himself, but he got there in one piece. More vodka, his preferred vice. One swig, two swigs, three. A stranger, whooping and hollering, added more to his cup. He couldn’t say no. Down it went.
He unbuttoned his shirt, fumbling with the buttons. It was hot and he was roasting.
Everything became too woozy. He sipped more. The music sounded like blurs. The lights looked like smudges. He sipped. He felt nausea tickling the back of his throat. Another sip.
His conscience told him to stop.
Something deep in his heart told him to not listen.
Bottoms up.
He fell back onto his ass, his cup spilling all over him. He licked at his arms, trying to salvage what he could. And then he laid down.
He was 10 and on a merry go round, laying flat on the middle, being spun over and over, faster and faster by someone he didn’t know. Faster and faster until the sky white and he was soaring.
A torrent of vomit came out of John and all over himself. He rolled over and continued heaving and retching until he was pure again, the floor defiled with his filth.
I didn’t make it this time, Roger, he thought.
“You went real hard last night, John. Just came to see if you woke up this morning,” Brian said as he hung his coat on the coat rack, walking into John’s house.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Got too excited is all,” John said, shuffling to the kitchen in his bathroom, trailed by the guitarist.
Brian chuckled, rubbing his neck. “I think we all did. Roger called me this morning, not knowing how he got home. I was the one who got him the bloody taxi!”
John snorted, walking up to his coffee machine. “He looked manic last night. His eyes were all wild. Sounds about right,” he said, pouring himself a cup, offering one to Brian who declined.
He rummaged through his medicine cabinet, pulling out some over the counter pain killers. This time, Brian accepted the offer.
“Even the virtuous Brian went hard last night, hmm?” John teased, popping 4 tablets into his mouth, swallowing it with the black coffee. Brian waved him off, taking his tablets with water.
“It was Fred’s birthday. Kinda hard to resist the devil when Freddie’s the one throwing the party.”
True that.
Brian sat by the kitchen table, sipping his water and wincing at the sunlight that poured through the window. He became so quite that in John’s hung-over brain, he forgot he was even there.
He poured himself some more coffee, throwing in a dash of sugar, a splash of creamer and a hearty glug of vodka from the flask he had in his robe pocket.
“John, you’ve got to be shitting me,” Brian said, making John jump in surprise.
“Jesus Christ. Sorry. Sorry. Bad habit,” he said softly, his face reddening as he dumped his concoction down the sink.
“Habit? You’re telling me you not only do this daily, in the morning none the less, but you walk around with a flask in your bloody dressing gown?” Brian asked incredulously, the tendons in his hands popping out.
John was faced away from Brian, holding onto the edge of the sink. He squeezed it tight, letting out a sharp puff of air. “I’m hung over. I- it was a mistake is all. Sorry.”
Brian wasn’t so sure about that but left anyways, his welcome clearly overstayed.
Once the door was closed, John ditched the coffee and cream, going straight to his flask.
He wondered if Brian would bring this up again.
John felt a firm slap to the back of his head, flinching as he woke up, looking around for the perpetrator, wiping the drool from the corner of his mouth.
“Why’d you even come over if you didn’t want to help?” Roger asked, throwing an oil stained towel at John’s face. John was too slow to catch it. He set the towel down on Roger’s work bench, lazily getting up and toddling over to Roger who was crouched by an old car.
“Sorry. Tired, you know,” John offered, a weak excuse but the only one his hazy brain could make up.
Roger recoiled at his presence, nose scrunching up. “Jeez, John. Were you partying last night?”
John shook his head. He was home all night, watching TV.
“You fucking reek like a pub, mate. What’s up with that?” Roger said, his perfectly blue eyes looking him up and down.
John should’ve probably been scared from the interrogation, but he felt too loose in the joints to care.
“Oh. I had a few drinks,” He admitted easily.
“A few?” Roger spluttered out.
“Maybe more.” John shrugged.
Roger’s lips pressed into a tight line, taking in John. Dirty clothes, disheveled hair. Bloodshot eyes and a 5 o’clock shadow. He didn’t look put together.
Roger looked at the asphalt at his feet and then up to John’s eyes.
“You know...Brian told me he caught you putting vodka into your coffee one morning…is that true?” His head was tilted, eyebrows furrowed.
John thought for a moment. “Probably.”
Roger cleared his throat, not prepared for that answer.
“Are you drunk now?”
“A bit.”
“And you drove here?”
“Mh-hmm.”
Roger got up, dusting his jeans, his head shaking. They all knew John had an affinity for drinking. It was obvious during parties and after shows. The man liked a stiff drink. Who were they to think any worse of it?
But lately, John hadn’t been himself. Sloppier and lax. Always dozing off, always up in his head. They thought he was going through a down period. None of them would’ve guessed he was a functional drunk. Not until right now.
“You need help, John.” Roger said, his voice a mixture of confusion, fear and sternness.
John leaned back to look up at Roger, frowning. “What? No, I’m fine. Really. Don’t worry about me.”
“I’m way passed that mate. You need help and I’m gonna get you it.”
John huffed, standing up, wobbling some. He walked past Roger, back into Roger’s house, saying, “I did not come here to be lectured. I don’t need help. I’m fine. I’m going.”
There was a tight grip to his arm, tugging him backwards. He was now in front of a red-faced Roger.
“And I’m not letting you drive home,” he said, teeth grit.
“You don’t have any right to do that! Let me go, Roger. I’m fine! I’m fine! Let me go!” John hissed, struggling against Roger’s unwavering hold on him.
“Fine,” Roger said, his eyes big as he let John go. John crashed to the floor, his flask and keys flying out of his pocket. He scrambled to pick it up, but swiftly and with sober ease, Roger snatched both of them up. He walked away after that, without so much as a word to John.
“Where are you going?” John yelled, fighting a losing battle with gravity as he tried to get up.
“Gonna make some phone calls. Meet me in the kitchen whenever you can,” Roger replied with a bitter sting.
John gave up, laying down on the cold tile. He shivered, his stomach churning.
I didn’t make it this time, Roger.
Dear John,
I’m terribly sorry I never noticed you were suffering. I should have been a better friend. I took you under my wing after all. I should have noticed.
I hope that here, you can begin to find peace again. I’m still not sure what’s ailing you, but when you get out, we can work on it together, alright? I need you to know that you’re not alone. That you aren’t bad. That you’ve done nothing wrong. The human condition can be treacherous at times. The need to numb it isn’t a sign of failure. It’s a sign of a fight to continue in any capacity possible.
I love you so much, Deacy. I can’t wait to see you again. I want to go shopping with you and maybe you can stay with me and Jim sometime, if you’d want.
Take care of yourself. Heal. Breathe.
Love, Freddie.
John,
I apologize for my lack of initiative to figure things out. I’m sorry I chose my own comfort in ignoring this rather than reaching out. I promise I won’t ever do that again. You are one of my greatest friends. I’ll never do anything to jeopardize that. I need you here with me ‘till I’m old and grey and I’ll make sure that you never go through something like this again.
I pray that once you’re out, we can talk together and do some soul searching. I know what it’s like to be so down that only a substance feels like the right medication. I understand more than I’ve let on to you guys before. You can always come to me to talk. I guarantee you, I probably was there too at one point or another.
Until then, I hope this place does you well. A break from the stress of life is always a good thing. Don’t rush it. Take your time here. Let yourself unravel. Be truthful with the psychologists. Don’t be afraid to sound silly or obnoxious or rude. You won’t be any of those. The mind is a weird place. Let yourself be vulnerable.
I’ll be seeing you soon, Deacy. Keep your head up and you might just see the stars!
Bri.
I’m so sorry.
RMT
John sniffled, putting away the letters his best friends had written for him. He got out of his bed, walking towards the window. He leaned against the windowsill, the morning sun heating up his skin, lighting up his face.
This was the first day he felt completely detoxed. No shakes, no anxiety, no nausea. He finally felt free of the chain around his ankle. He could move better, think clearer, breathe deeper. He felt like this whole recovery thing might work. He might be a human again. No need for liquid crutches. Just a man. A free man.
He cracked open the window, sticking his head out to smell the spring air. His cheeks felt an invigorating cool breeze and not the frigid porcelain for once. A smile tugged at his lips, his hands running through his hair. He was ready for today.
He had group therapy in an hour. He had time to bang out some letters before then. He rushed to his desk, pulling out some pen and paper.
Rog,
Don’t be sorry. It should be me who’s sorry. Without you, without the other guys, I would’ve kept spiraling.
I wouldn’t have made it.
But I’m here and alive and I think I’ll soon start to thrive.
So, I want to thank you. Thank you for putting up with me. Thank you for still loving me as a brother even after I yelled and cursed at you. Thank you for taking my life into your own hands. I’ll never be able to repay you. But I’ll try.
I want to tell you about my time here. I don’t know, maybe you’d be interested.
Every morning, we wake up at 8. We get to….

Beautiful, Cats, and Children: Dolley Id 62409, 5 Yrs. 44 Ibs., Dreaming of Happiness at Manhattan ACc TO BE KILLED 6/22/19 Dolly is a playgroup helper dog! A volunteer writes: “I wonder what Dolly's life was like before arriving at the care center? We will likely never know. Well, what's really important now is to find her a new home and a loving family able to put a smile on her face while getting in return a great pet! Dolly is a little black orchid found in a forest rather than in a florist shop. She is genuine, untamed and everything seems new to her here in our premises. She goes here and there, runs, jumps for treats or when called, wags her tail a lot, looses herself briefly in a caretaker's arms, sits at times and seems puzzled by toys and balls. Her kennel is not her favorite place and I doubt she was ever confined. Dolly is a blank canvas open to writing a whole new book with a new owner who will teach her all about love and being loved, good manners and achieving a perfect match! Dolly is quite endearing and the promise of a beautiful relationship in savvy, caring and loving hands. Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center!” A Staff Member Notes: Dolly is a playgroup helper dog! Dolly is sweet and social. Volunteer Evelyne Cumps Notes: Dolly is very sweet, playful, affectionate, good with other dogs and healthy beside her URI. Being Alone, Andrew Bogut, and Apparently: Silly, Sweet SMOKEY A SUPER SWEET CHUNKY HIPPO FRIENDLY, OUTGOING,& VERY SPECIAL HE LOVES OTHER DOGS TOO! 券 ID 51868, 1 YR. OLD.59 LBS. OF JOY WAITING FOR HIS PERFECT FAMILY AT THE BROOKLYN ACC TO BE KILLED – 3/7/2019 <3 Prepare to lose your heart to sweet, lowrider hippo, SMOKEY! Ok, let’s preface this little lead in story by stating unequivocally that photos just DON’T do SMOKEY justice. You HAVE to watch his videos below with his friends in playgroup to truly appreciate what a living, breathing work of art he truly is. Love at first sight, we guarantee it. And you will be laughing and smiling simultaneously as you watch him bounce around, putting up with every sort of nonsense from his pushy friends. He’s a darling chunky, hippo with a pig tail that never stops twirling. He adores people, loves attention, and he’s silly and goofy and super sweet. Honestly, we just can’t get enough of him. You’d be the center of attention with Smokey by your side, that much is certain. If you are looking for a playful, happy go lucky sidekick who has a sterling resume of skills, look no further. Smokey would be perfect in an experienced home (no children under Age 13). If you can give our sweet boy a soft place to land, hurry and PM our page or email us at [email protected] to foster or adopting him now. With my friend Zena in playgroup! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XmQ6wHKAg4 With my friend Spock in playgroup! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BupPj-GmWsA SMOKEY, ID# 51868, 1 Yr. Old, 59 lbs, Neutered male Brooklyn ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Gray / White Owner Surender Reason: Return, 2/19/2019 Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Rescue Only Medical Behavior Rating: 1. Green AT RISK MEMO: We feel Smokey would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can reassess behavior once he has acclimated and decompressed in a stable home environment. Smokey was diagnosed with CIRDC and will have to be kept away from other dogs for 14 days as this is a contagious disease. INTAKE NOTES – DATE OF INTAKE, 2/19/2019: Smokey had a high energy level during intake but was very friendly and outgoing. He became over around quickly but was easily redirected. OWNER SURRENDER NOTES – BASIC INFORMATION: Smokey is a 1 year old, medium mixed breed male who was neutered prior to coming into the shelter. He has no known health issues or injuries and has not seen a vet recently. Smokey was in his previous home for about two weeks and was surrendered due to him not being a good match in the home. Smokey lived with 2 adults and 2 children during his 2 weeks. Smokey is friendly and outgoing when meeting new people. Smokey lived with a 5 and a 13 year old in the home, he was playful and energetic around them. Smokey has some resource guarding behavior with food so he should be housed in a home with older children. (Note: When the smaller child in the home approached Smokey while he was eating Smokey turned and bit him.) Smokey has passed dogs when on a walk and was relaxed and curious when passing them. Smokey has not spent time around cats before. Smokey is not bothered by having his toys touched but has displayed resource guarding around food. Smokey has bitten one family member in the past. He is housetrained and has a very high energy level. He has never had a medical issue. Other Notes: Smokey allowed his owner to bathe him and enjoyed being brushed. Smokey's owner had not trimmed his nails in the past, and he is trained not to go on the couch. Smokey does not alert bark when guests enter the home. For a New Family to Know: Smokey is described as being friendly, affectionate and playful. He has been an indoor dog, likes to play with all kinds of toys, especially toy balls, eats wet and dry food and sleeps anywhere in the home. Smokey is well behaved when left alone in the house, has not been crate trained and walks both on and off leash at night when there is no one else around. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive. Some dogs with Level 1 determinations may still have potential challenges, but these are challenges that the behavior team believe can be handled by the majority of adopters. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Dogs with a Level 2 determination may have multiple potential challenges and these may be presenting at differing levels of intensity, so careful consideration of the behavior notes will be required for counselling. Potential challenges at Level 2 include no young children, single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity, mouthiness, fear with potential for escalation, impulse control/arousal, anxiety and separation anxiety. Level 3 Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment. It is likely that every dog with a Level 3 determination will have a behavior modification or training plan available to them from the behavior department that will go home with the adopters and be made available to the New Hope Partners for their fosters and adopters. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but when seen alongside a Level 3 determination can be assumed to be more severe. The potential challenges for Level 3 determinations include adult only home (no children under the age of 13), single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity with potential for redirection, mouthiness with pressure, potential escalation to threatening behavior, impulse control, arousal, anxiety, separation anxiety, bite history (human), bite history (dog) and bite history (other). New Hope Rescue Only Dog is not publicly adoptable. Prospective fosters or adopters need to fill out applications with New Hope Partner Rescues to save this dog.

Beautiful, Benadryl, and Children: A BRAVE,BEAUTIFUL, BIG HEARTED,SUPER SWEET GIRL SUFFERS FROM NEGLECT&DREAMS OF A FAMILY WHO WILL LOVE HER FOREVER... CATALINA ld 53717, 6 Yrs. Social With Dogs, Gentle & Shyly Sweet, Needs Follow Up Vet Care for Pyoderma & Heart Murmur! Brave and beautiful, CATALINA’s life has been one of neglect and hope. Hope that someday she would find the happiness she has always longed for, and the dream of a family who would care for her, cherish her, and never let her go. Instead, she has itchy, burning skin, patchy fur, and because of the severity of the skin infection, her mushy face and paws are actually a reflection of her skin issue – swollen and uncomfortable. Imagine being in such a state, and for who knows how long, but still she remains gentle and sweet as can be, so happy for company, a kind word, and the love of the volunteers. Catalina is compromised due to her skin, and it won’t be long before she gets the dreaded shelter cold and ends up on the list to die. This middle aged lady deserves better – she deserves to see a dermatologist, she deserves a soft bed, and more than anything else, she deserves the dream of her forever family to come true. Please save her life….hurry and Message our page right now or email us at [email protected] right now for assistance fostering or adopting her. MY VIDEO https://youtu.be/Y3KveMq1zIg CATALINA, ID # 51737, @ 6 Yrs. Old, 55.25 lbs. Brooklyn ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Gray Brown / White, Unaltered Female I came into the shelter as a stray on 11-Jan-2019. OWNER SURRENDER NOTES - BASIC INFORMATION: Catalina is a brown and white female dog that was brought to the center as a stray. INTAKE NOTES - DATE OF INTAKE, 1/3/2018: Catalina was shy throughout the process however she allowed to be collared and scanned. She was responding sit and stay cues and by going slow she allowed to be petted. She was interested in treats. Catalina scanned negative for a microchip. SHELTER ASSESSMENT - Date of assessment: 5-Jan-2019 Look: 1. Dog's eyes are averted, ears are back, tail is down, relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body low and a bit fearful. Paw squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back. Paw squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Catalina allowed all handling throughout assessment, though she appeared to be uncomfortable and a bit fearful during assessment. Catalina trembled and remained low in posture with tail loosely tucked during majority of assessment. Catalina showed no escalating or concerning behaviors otherwise. PLAYGROUP NOTES - DOG TO DOG SUMMARIES: Catalina was surrender as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 1/4: When off leash at the Care Centers, Catalina greets the novel male dog with a neutral posture. She followed him around, exploring the yard and checking in with him. 1/5-6: Catalinas greets a novel female dog with a soft posture. She explores the yard, occasionally checking in with the greeter. INTAKE BEHAVIOR - Date of intake: 3-Jan-2019 Summary: shy, needed slow approach EDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial: 3-Jan-2019 Summary: calm, allows all handling ENERGY LEVEL: Catalina has maintained a calm relaxed demeanor while in the shelter, exhibiting a low energy level. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Recommendations: No young children (under 5) Recommendations comments: Fearful/intimidated: Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Catalina may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. She should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at her own pace. Potential challenges: Fearful Potential challenges comments: FEARFUL: Though observed to be human-social, Catalina may need time to warm up to the handler as she initially presents as a shy dog. She manages her stress well and has not escalated or shown any aggression, but she does need time to warm up to new people. Sh does best with a slow approach, and should be permitted to greet new people at her own pace and to initiate interaction (rather than being approached and pet immediately by a new person) so she has time to adjust and become comfortable before she is handled. She should be spoken to softly and gently. MEDICAL EXAM NOTES 5-Jan-2019 L V T Notes: 11:45 AM 4 ml paradenfese applied per cutaneously as per doctor's request. 3-Jan-2019 Blood Work Interpretation. Being Alone, Animals, and Another One: Handsome, Friendly and Playful Boy. Waggy and Calm around other dogs in playgroup. @ Manhattan ACC Gidear den SD# 45208 2 yrs old, 73 lbs TO BE KILLED 11/7/18 Handsome, Playful and Friendly Gideon is hoping for a new loving home! He was calm, polite and waggy when meeting doggy-girls in playgroup. Please share! A volunteer writes: Gideon is a big guy! Dogs come in all sizes, shapes and colors but they usually like the same things. Being a man's (woman's) best friend, meeting their peers, sampling treats and playing. Gideon is no different. He is one friendly character, ready when you are and sitting right by his door. He is a dynamic walker, likely house trained and excited to meet other dogs, mostly when they are gals! Besides liking my dry liver bits (he finished my whole bag of treats), Gideon is a pro at ball playing, although he loves toys, too. He will sit most of the time, waiting for the throw and sometimes will fetch, hoping for another one. He is quite energetic, powerful, playful, friendly and absolutely gorgeous in his perfectly groomed coat. Being Alone, Andrew Bogut, and Bad: GENTLE, SHY LUNA TRYING SO HARD. TIMID. BUT SEEKS COMFORT & A FRIEND. SNEAKS A KISS TO STAFF. LOOKINGT FOR HER SAFE HAVEN, A KIND, SWEET SOUL 610 TO BE KILLED – 9/5/2018 A GENTLE, SHY, SWEET SOUL LOOKING FOR HER SAFE HAVEN. LUNA NEEDS A FRIEND <3 Her parent of 2 years dumped her to die when the landlord said “no pets” and Luna is simply heartbroken. Shy by nature, she had enjoyed the safety and comfort of a family home and never was exposed to the big scary world. Now her life has been turned on end, and she is alone. This impossibly beautiful girl hasn’t a bad bone in her whole body. She desperately wants a friend, and she is trying so very hard. Brave, stoic, underneath her shyness beats a heart bursting with love that she wants to share with a special someone. And knowing that, she breaks our hearts because we know how hard it is for her to come out of her shell and put her trust in all these strangers who hold her life in her hands. But as a volunteer writes: “Luna's young and radiant beauty steers many eyes and hearts. Visitors stand by her door, marveling at her flawless snow white coat and her stunning looks. She wants to go out, is leashed pretty easily and walks quite well and even better and better as we circle the yard a number of times. I know she wants to make friends but she is not sure of any of her moves. She is smart, intuitive and chooses to comply to my requests. Although at times looking for exits, Luna comes when I call her, sits at once on command, accepts a scarf around her neck and a bit frozen, my caresses. There is a smile, there is a yawn, bright eyes of excitement and wariness. She is conflicted. Luna is trying so hard and I so love and admire her for it. When I brought her back to her kennel, Luna stepped in without effort and licked my hand. I was so happy and grateful. We do not know Luna's past . She is a very timid dog within our walls and will likely need a very experienced new owner to get her out of her shy shell and open the world for her. Luna is gorgeous, endearing and full of promising potentials to make a wonderful best friend for ever. Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center.” Don’t let this sweet girl die, please step up for Luna and foster or adopt her now so her life can be saved. PRIVATE MESSAGE our page or email us at [email protected] for assistance. Shy, gentle Luna: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBE49Q2m3Eg LUNA, ID # 39905 @ 2 Yrs. Old, 49.2 lbs. Manhattan ACC, Large Breed, White, Unaltered Female Owner Surrender Reason: Landlord won’t allow Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Rescue only Intake Behavior Rating: 2. Blue AT RISK MEMO: Luna is fearful at the care center and has growled at handlers. Luna would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. We recommend placement with a new hope partner. Medically, Luna has dental disease but is otherwise healthy. OWNER SURRENDER NOTES – BASIC INFORMATION: No behavior information was shared at the time of surrender, so we have no known history for Luna. SHELTER ASSESSMENT – DATE OF ASSESSMENT, 9/2/2018 Summary:: In the assessment room, Luna was tense and avoided the handler. When an attempt to collar her was made, she growled, so the handling assessment was not conducted. DOGGY PLAYGROUP NOTES – DOG TO DOG SUMMARIES: Summary (1):: 8/30: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Luna is highly fearful and does not approach. It is recommended Luna be given a period of decompression before immediate introduction to other dogs. Future introductions should occur on a one on one basis to respectful dogs. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Luna so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 9/3: In the yard, Luna tolerates gentle touch and petting on the head, but she remains uncomfortable with the interactions. She allows her caretaker to approach but Luna does not move from the spot she is sitting, stress yawns at the start and end of the interaction, and flicks her eyes away when eye contact is maintained. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Luna is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Luna is very fearful at the care center and has growled at handlers. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Luna is very fearful at the care center and has growled at handlers. It is important to always go slow and give Luna the option to walk away from any social interaction. Luna should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Luna’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Luna would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment if Luna is still displaying this behavior. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Ranger jumps up a lot on people in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised.
