Club Penguin 3D’s Database leak | What you need to know

At around 1pm AEST, the database of Club Penguin 3D was hacked and this caused quite a stir over in the community as the game just recently was now released and everyone is worried about their online safety.

This wasn’t the first attack that happened in CP3D as there was another one yesterday at around 1:30 PM AEST during the launch of the Halloween party.

A lot of users believe it was Riley (one of the owners of Club Penguin Online) who did both attacks due to suspicious activity yesterday on Discord but nothing is confirmed.

Due to this, the entire game is on lockdown. No one can change their password or access the game until they’re able to fix all the security issues at hand.

The moderation team started a voice chat for those with questions on what just happened and I managed to ask at least a lot of the questions that are needed to answer.

Part 1: A description of the attack

Cutiejea: So what exactly happened? CP3D Team: So the database was leaked due to an attack on our server. From there, information about our users was stolen from us.

C: What information was taken? CP3D: Usernames, passwords (that’s encrypted), emails, and public IP

C: How is this not sound like a bad thing? Like why are you telling us everything is ok? CP3D: First of all, public IP and private IP’s are different. Public IP’s are something that publicly gets sent and you can do a ‘find my ip‘ on them. Yes, it tries to be accurate on your location but half of the time, it’s not the exact location. Second, passwords are very encrypt that it will take months to get one password out of it. Just saying that we still suggest you change your password if you used the same one in any other website? Third, this was an attack on the moderation team, not the community. They just want to target us.

Part 2: The intension

C: What’s a source code and why do they want that?

CP3D: A source code is the main foundation of the game. It’s all the code needed to make the game exist. Basically, it helps make our game unique. If other people have our code, then we just lost that uniqueness. Only 6 people have the CP3D source code. We don’t know why they want it though. Maybe to sell it or release it.

C: If you don’t mind me asking, how old is the development and moderation team? CP3D: Around 14 to 20 years old

C: Do you think Riley from yesterday has something to do with this? Do you know which mod got their account hacked? Was it Snowdude since I couldn’t DM him when this all came to light? CP3D: We can’t answer that. But we can definitely say it’s not Snowdude. He has his account’s dm settings set to the way it is due to safety concerns.

Part 3: Solutions

C: What are you doing now to prevent this from happening

CP3D: We asked the mods from Club Penguin Rewritten from advice as they had their database breached in the past. We’re asking them how they improved and make it more secure and we will do the same. Also, we locked down the entire game as we continue to work on this issue. Sadly no one can enter the game.

C: How long will that take? CP3D: It depends, probably a few days or weeks… but it’s more likely it will be out for a month or two. So sadly… not everyone will experience the Halloween party.

C: Any final things you want to say? CP3D: We want to reassure our players that everyone is safe. This was an attack made for the moderation team. It doesn’t seem like they want to attack the users. They just want to threaten the mods into submission. This whole thing is a learning experience. We were overconfident with our security that we didn’t expect this to happen. We plan to make it much more secure and safe for our users.  CPR has gone through this incident as well so we can assure you that you are safe. We just suggest now that you all change your passwords for your safety’s sake. We apologize that this has happened and I hope everyone are able to still support us as we go through this.

Aftermath of the Club Penguin 3D breach

CP3D team has done a good job with their Q&A voice chat session. A lot of the answers clear but sadly, some couldn’t be answered in full detail.

The entire game is currently offline. Despite this crowd and panic control, some users are deciding to leave the game and/or the community in its entirety due to this issue.

It is not really certain that Riley or anyone from Club Penguin Online or Penguin Patrol has something to do with this but the community would like to conclude that it’s the case due to past history on attacks and hacking, especially to YouTuber Tamago2474.

Hopefully, the CP3D team are able to fix this and make the game more secure to its users. I am also glad to hear that Club Penguin Rewritten are able to help out in this as I know other people who are very active in the CPR community also supports the game.

CPPS’s and CP fan games are not ran by Disney or anyone with the budget for really high end security. It’s ran by young passionate fans who want to keep the game alive or give their own spin on the game.

For now, all we can do is wait and put in a lot of trust to the development team to fix this.

When I heard that the 3DS E-Shop was closing down for good, the first thing I did, the day before it shut down, I went to redownload Pokémon Rumble World from the e-Shop one last time, before I lost it forever.

I played the absolute crap out of this game back when I first got my 3DS. (Screenshots from 2015, recovered from Miiverse archives)

I also gleefully exploited an out of bounds glitch I discovered from a YouTube tutorial

I had this one online friend I played with who I met from co-writing/ RPing a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fanfic on the PMD: Gates to Infinity Community on Miiverse (my character in that RP was a Leafeon, hence Leafeon showing up in so many of the screenshots)

Unfortunately I lost contact with this friend once Miiverse shut down and I never heard from them since. I eventually stopped playing Pokémon Rumble World and deleted it from my 3DS. I just didn't have enough space on my SD Card so I deleted it to make room for other games. I kept the save data backed up because I caught nearly every Pokémon and sunk a few £ into microtransactions and I didn't want to lose all that progress.

Back to the day before the E-Shop closed, I downloaded Pokémon Rumble World and played it for the first time in what turned out was half a decade. How did I know this?

One of the first things I saw when I opened the game was a notification that someone had visited my town.

Last visited: 5 years ago.

I admit I shedded a tear. I doubt anyone is going to be visiting my town via Spotpass ever again so it was nice to see that my old friend was the last one.
