Week 6: Digital Citizenship & Daniel Andrews
Within digital communities and public spheres, we have active users who can be analysed using the concept of 'digital citizenship'. There are multiple ways to define 'digital citizenship', the following best describes the term in the simplest form; "Digital citizenship refers to actions, behaviours, thoughts and commitments by a person in a digital community within our society today" (Vromen 2016, p. 10). Digital citizenship can be observed on social media platforms with users engaging in discussions about society, politics and government views. The term 'platformization' was created for media and cultural scholars to examine the way different users use social media platforms (Helmond 2015). Platforms are a place where people can freely voice their opinions and be heard. However, the limitation of digital citizenship is the usage, or miss-usage, of a digital platform (Duffy, Poell & Nieborg 2019). Social media has battled with online bullying, as a miss-use of these online platforms, particularly in regards to digital citizens opinions and controversial views. Hence, a good digital citizen is a person with the skills and knowledge to effectively use digital technologies in a positive way to participate in society, communicate with others, and create and consume digital content (NSW Department of Education 2020)
Hashtag publics are observed within platforms as they facilitate search, public discussion and debate (Zappavigna 2011). Examples of hashtag publics include #BlackLivesMatter #MeToo #Covid19 #ClimateChage (Milne 2020). However, hashtag publics can lead to cancel culture, also known as online shaming. Similar to online bullying, cancel culture has been referred to as 'call-out culture' as a form of online public shaming. Cancel culture can occur when society values or ideas have evolved. An example of cancel culture is controversial tweets from celebrities past resurfacing (Arnowitz 2018). Although viewing these tweets in the present, ideas discussed seem outdated, the tweets are a reflection of the celebrities past self and do not define the celebrities current views. The development of hashtags is also noticeable in the public sphere of digital politics. Hashtags allow politicians to gain support or as a tool to effectively boost their reputation. Victorian premier Daniel Andrews will be used as an example to illustrate good digital citizenship and how he effectively uses hashtags and his knowledge on platformization to gain support and awareness during #Covid-19.
Unlike traditional media, social media has given politicians the opportunity to have greater control over their messages due to bypassing mainstream media, to engage in discussion with many different members of the public directly (Nelimarkka et al. 2020, p. 3). During Daniel Andrews #Covid-19 campaign to #StayAtHome, he correctly uses different social media platforms to effectively convey his messages. For example, on Instagram Andrews uses humorous photos to update Victorians on #Covid-19 restrictions. On Spotify, Andrews creates a music playlist with songs about #StayingAtHome. Finally, on TikTok Andrews understands TikToks humour and collaborates with comedian Glenn Robbins, as Kel Knight from Kath and Kim, to encourage Victorians to download the #Covid-19 app.
I wonder, Can there be sex politics without politics media? (season:3 episode:2)

As we do with many other issues and crises in our lives, we suppress the issue to feel better about ourselves.
