@bloomberrypint tagged me in an ask for a list of my favorite first time listens of 2022. This was fun so thank you for the tag.
Apparently I listened to a lot of instrumental stuff this year. Four of my six picks are instrumental. I spent like half the year listening to just Sparks because I was so hyped for seeing them live in the spring. But I did discover some other great stuff this year.
1. Annette OST (Sparks)
Ok, listen, as a long-time Sparks fan I am only moderately embarrassed to admit that I didn’t watch Annette or listen to the sound track (except for the most popular tracks) until 2022. I’m not a film buff and I’d prefer to listen to Russell singing but, hey, I still enjoyed this.
2. Rags, Reels & Airs (Dave Swarbrick, Martin Carthy & Diz Disley)
I listened to a lot of mostly celtic trad in 2022 but was also happy to discover an album of tunes with two of my favorite English folk artists (Carthy & Swarbrick). Honestly worth putting the album on this list for its album cover alone, which brings extreme amounts of joy.
3. Days Have Gone By, Vol. 6 (John Fahey)
Incredible blues-style guitarist with some more distant influences as well. (See “A Raga Called Pat”). The most chill time I had all year was listening to this. Please listen to this. I’m obsessed.
4. Gryphon (Gryphon)
What can I say about this strange, proggy, light-hearted, Ren-Faire-day-trip-like band and album other than: teenage me would have loved this.
5. On Ne Dira Riem (Space Art)
Great old synth music for my Mort Garson Enjoyers out there. Favorite track - Onyx.
6. Astral Folklore (Blood Tower)
I listened to a lot of Dungeon Synth in 2022, and this was my favorite album of the genre last year (though it came out in 2020).
