AUG - Cinemalaya X
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Watching the independent local films in Cinemalaya has been a yearly tradition for me since we were required to watch a couple of films when I was a sophomore in college. Since then, I make sure to watch 2-3 films each time. This year, however, I went crazy and watched 10 films. YAY.
Here is my rating for each film:
Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan -  ***
It isn't really a part of the New Breed or Director's Showcase, but I have had so many chances of watching it but I kept failing to, so finally I decided to catch it during the festival. YES, it IS very long, but it's worth watching.
Truth is dead. So is meaning. - Fabian
1st ko si 3rd - ***
I don't know why I didn't like it as much as my other friends did, but I found some parts dragging and I didn't enjoy it that much. Or maybe this was because we were seated on the 4th floor - balcony and I was uneasy because of the height we were in.
Asintado - **
I liked the ending, and this could've had a higher rating if only the cinematography was better.
#Y - **
Hmm. I had high expectations about this one, and I was a bit disappointed, although some parts were good.
Being happy and having no right to be unhappy are two completely different things.
The Janitor - ****
The Janitor had a bit of similarities with the the film, On The Job. But I liked it. Like, really liked it. Also, Derek Ramsay looked hot as a badass policeman.
Tangina mo, pokpok ako! Dream come true samin ang maging kabit!
Mariquina - *****
This is my favourite among all the films I've watched this year. I was bawling in the cinemas alone while watching, it was a bit embarrassing.
Sundalong Kanin - ****
I didn't expect much because I didn't really like films with themes and plots like this, but I liked it a lot. It filled me with fear and uneasiness that stayed with me even while I was on the way home. I don't think I'll ever forget that one scene that triggered it.
Bwaya - **
It was okay. Just okay. Also, the obvious use of a Go Pro in some scenes irked me a bit.
Dagitab - ***
That beautiful beach scene. That perplexing forest scene.
Ronda - **
I didn't like it that much because the reveal / surprise ending didn't have that much impact on me. Also, the black screen before the last scene was misleading.

Cinemalaya X | August 7, 2014 Part Uno Cinemalaya X with mah Cinemalaya homies (hi Mac & Juan). I actually went to CCP thrice that week with the hopes of seeing Ai-Ai Delas Alas in the flesh but heck wag daw muna sabi ng tadhana (hAHAHA chuxx lang pfuoh). Anyways, here are my personal favorites: 1. Children's Show (Orgasmic cinematography, brilliant actors, excellent color grading!!!) 2. Sundalong Kanin (I watched this with my parents and we all loved it! Brilliant acting huhu qtpies) 3. Mariquina (Looove love the film score!!) I'll be back next year for sure wohoo!

Given my busy schedule at work, watching Cinemalaya entries is already a god-given gift, so I always want to fist-bump them for their awesome move to have screenings outside the CCP. At least yuppies like me who have strong inclination to independent cinema are able to catch some entries.
This habit necessitates that there is always a CCP trip to have a ‘complete’ sense of the festival. I felt like I needed to go there even though I have already watched a number of entries outside to have a feel of how it is now, 10 years later. Here are some snippets.

If you were able to visit the main venue, you’d notice that the festival is starting to attract a different kind of crowd. When I was in college it was just artists, students, and professors in the liberal arts who visit the niche. Now, there are high school students and oldies.

It has also become a place where you can take selfies and groupies.

While it is nice that a lot of people are being drawn into Cinemalaya, I just hope that they are able to have some good takeaways. After all, it’s not everyday that the universe gets to feed us with well-written, well-thought, and socially relevant films so I hope they would get the most out of every entry. Otherwise, it will just be like your ordinary film fest where people flock to feast on something that doesn’t make any sense.

On the other hand, here is my own version of ‘Cinemalaya through the years’. I have captured the posters of the films I was able to watch since 2008.

I guess I was just lucky to have chosen the films that were also hailed as 'Best Film' in their respective year (for this year I was never wrong in betting on KASAL, the film was able to bag the Best Film among other major awards). And as the festival enters a new decade, I wish that they continue on producing films and tell real stories, specially now that a lot of people are becoming interested.
