I saw this thing on Netfix where a male Magnificent Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus magnificus) is doing his little dance, while the female is perched on a branch above him evaluating his moves. Meanwhile all around them are younger males, who are there to watch and learn the dance.
Jesus. Imagine you're on a date and you're trying to decide if you're gonna sleep with this guy, while you're surrounded by pre-teen boys taking notes on everything he says and does.

Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise (Cicinnurus magnificus)
The Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise is a relatively common member of the Paradisaeidae family which is endemic to New Guinea and its satellite islands. This species, like the most Birds-of-Paradise, is polygamous and creates a display site, known as a lek, from which he attracts females with his elaborate dance and plumage. The Wilson's and Magnificent Birds-of-Paradise (Cicinnurus sp.) are considered to posses some of the most elaborate and complex plumages on the face of the planet. In addition, they posses unique structural colors in their skin, beaks, and tongues making their displays even more dazzling.
Thanks to this breathtaking plumage, Birds-of-Paradise are also widely valued among the native inhabitants of New Guinea and have been traded on the island for more than 2000 years. The unique feathers and colors are integral aspects of ceremonial dances, rituals, and costumes among the islanders. As such, when the first western explorers arrived in New Guinea at the beginning of the 16th century, the birds were described from specimens that were purchased at local markets and were originally prepared for use in ceremonial headdresses -- most of which lacked their wings and legs. This perpetuated the belief that the creatures were footless birds of the heavens, too pure and beautiful to set-foot upon the lowly Earth, earning them the title "birds of the gods" or "birds of paradise" and providing Carl Linnaeus with inspiration for the latin name of the Greater Bird-of-Paradise: Paradisaea apoda, the footless paradise-goer.
Our collection of Birds-of-Paradise consists entirely of specimens purchased at local markets by naturalist Stanley Jewett in the 1940s and 50s following WWII. The majority of these specimens lack feet and wings. It's remarkable to think that similar specimens might have been aboard Magellan's ship as it returned to Spain in 1522. You can see photos of these specimens here.
Learn more about the Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise here, or the whole family here.

Congratulations to astronomy-to-zoology for being the first to correctly identify this week's specimen! You've now been entered into a drawing to win fabulous museum prizes! Another specimen to come this Friday! Stay tuned.
