Tohoku region Maiko: Akita (Chioka 千緒花 and Chiyori 千代鈴 2015) - Yûzawa (Kanohana 佳乃華 2018) - Aizuwakamatsu (Mai 真衣, around 2006) - Morioka (Marika まり佳 and Kikumaru 喜久丸 2019) - Sendai (Chiyosuzu 千代鈴 2018) - Sakata (Momoka, around 2017) - Yamagata (Botan ぼたん 2018). Within the Tohoku region, the prefectures Akita and Yamagata contain two cities each with two Hanamachi: Akita and Yuzawa, Sakata and Yamagata.  The Sakata Maiko are open for first-timers, tourist-friendly and offer lunch and afternoon events. It’s said that this is more the style of Furisode-san (like in Asakusa), but they call themselves Maiko, so who am I to judge.

Remember Ishida Hiroaki’s coworkers from Adventure/02, Chioka (with the bandana) and Sakurada (with the radio cassette player)? So these guys are based on two real life Toei employees, assistant director Chioka Kimitoshi and assistant producer Sakurada Hiroyuki.

Two decades have passed since then, and Chioka and Sakurada are no longer assistants - they are a veteran director and veteran producer in their own right! And they’re finally returning to where it all began: Digimon Ghost Game is produced by Sakurada and directed (in part) by Chioka!

I hope they give us something fun and raise Gammamon to be the best Gammamon he can be!

Daisuke Kaiser 101 Class

Hello everyone, it’s Ni. Today i will explain what is Daisuke Kaiser and why every single Valentine’s i draw our good ol’ friend Daisuke with the Kaiser outfit.

It all started in 2001, on Feb 7 with a Drama CD called “Armor Evolution to the Unknown” (also known by its original title “Michi e no Armor Shinka”, or by “MenAS”) which takes place on Valentine’s Day.

Briefly summary of the story: Daisuke tries so hard to be cooler and get chocolate from girls on Valentine’s Day that he got a whole plan. Said plan becomes futile since a real enemy appears in Odaiba. All Twelve Tokyo kids + their digimon are featured, plus Taichi’s mom, Sora’s mom, Mimi’s mom, Jun (Daisuke’s sister), Miyako’s sisters, the glorious Kido family (ALL VOICED BY KIKUCHI MASAMI, KIDO BROS’ VA), Yamato/Takeru’s dad, Sakurada & Chioka.

So, let’s begin.

• Who is Daisuke Kaiser?

It’s Daisuke. He does not hide this from anyone. It’s just Daisuke pretending to be Ken’s alter ego Digimon Kaiser.

• Is there any official artwork of him?

Nope. Only common agreement is that his outfit is like’s Ken Kaiser. Some people change the goggles by the sunglasses, some keep the goggles, some keep both goggles and add the sunglasses, some design Daisuke with his Digital World’s outfit plus the Kaiser’s cape. Some change the coloring of the clothes to fit Daisuke’s palette. And my previous art had his hair change to purple/indigo until i got too tired of it and changed to his original hair color.

So it’s up to you to draw him as you want.

• Where to find the story?

If you’re lucky, they’re still up on YouTube, with some incomplete translation though. All I can do is link you is to the freshly released translation of it by Kazari.

• Is it canon?

 ... I mean... it’s a little wilder but very Digimon Adventure kind of humor. You can consider it canon as you please. But i don’t think we will ever hear a reference to this Drama CD everywhere... Except for one tweet from Kiuchi Reiko (Daisuke’s VA) making a vague reference to this obscure material on twitter a decade ago lol

• Conclusion:

Motomiya Daisuke cannot be evil and the only bad thing in him is his dummy head.

Some off-the-cuff Appmon posting

Since it’s Appmon’s anniversary, I wanted to post some various thoughts about it that wouldn’t fit in a full-on meta!

I feel like the impact of this probably doesn’t really come off now that the show can be marathoned in retrospect, but if you were actually there witnessing it, I seriously can’t emphasize enough how hard they were trying to make this series accessible to new viewers because of the uphill battle to get people into this series, complete with the recap episode to accommodate changed timeslot, the unusually long recap sections (even by modern kids’ anime standards) and mostly episodic format to make sure anyone could jump in anytime, and even -- I kid you not -- putting every episode up for free on the official website for the entire week, with no need to pay for it or be on a subscription service. (And no region lock, either!) Although it’s a bit sad in retrospect to see that these efforts didn’t pan out, there’s something to be said how they managed to make such a cohesive and meaningful story in spite of having to deal with all of that baggage at the same time.

Despite that, the series eventually ranked twelfth place in the 2017 Tokyo Anime Award Festival, competing with every anime that released that year in Japan -- even despite the fact that so few people had heard of it. It actually received as high as eighth place during the middle of the voting, resulting in a lot of “the best eighth place ever” jokes.

Appmon aired in 2016-2017 but didn’t receive an official licensed release until 2019, so that’s why you’ll see a lot of people using conflicting romanizations or translations of various terminology (I mean, I’m still using spellings I’m used to, despite the fact I don’t have anything against the Crunchyroll translation myself; it’s really just habit, I promise!). In particular, Astra’s catchphrase had a pretty large number of permutations.

Although it’s now well-understood by Appmon fans that Be My Light’s lyrics were hinting at the ending, I also have the additional feeling that the lyrics are from Yuujin’s perspective, not Haru’s.

Apparently, making Haru a nice, soft kid involved an uphill battle in the development room, but it was eventually decided that all the kids should be nice kids because of a sentiment that kids are actually more likely to be nice kids in real life. (Interestingly, this seems to be the same reason Ghost Game’s Hiro is made to be a relatively well-behaved kid as well.) The series itself seems to have been made with the motive of being relatable to kids in the modern era -- something classic Digimon series fans will recognize as having been Seki’s motive behind Adventure through Frontier -- and also in the hopes that everyone watching can take home something positive in their lives.

Some members of classic series staff involved on Appmon: animation directors Nobuzane Setsuko (also chief animation director on 02 and Tamers) and Naoi Masahiro. Ghost Game director and Digimon staff veteran Chioka was involved in a bit of storyboarding, including the Agumon episode -- which original Adventure/02 director Kakudou gave his regards and thanks for being very true to Agumon’s character.

Appmon is considered a main line Digimon entry, not a spinoff, and Toei has been very consistent about including it in its lineups for TV Digimon anime. Times it’s excluded usually have to do with some kind of technicality involving Digimon species or the toyline, but they’ve never held back on treating it as a main line entry.

Digimon Con 2022! 📹📱👥

Dear Tumblr,

The first ever official Digimon digital presentation event was streamed on YouTube yesterday! It's going to be an annual event from here on out known as Digimon Con. It was similar to other digital presentation events that are common these days, such as Nintendo Directs. It featured live music performances, news and announcements on upcoming Digimon products, friendly matches between the top Digimon Card Game players in the US and Japan, and discussions with directors about the production of various seasons of the Digimon anime and theatrical movies. If you weren't there to see it live, I've found a livestream that someone uploaded a few hours ago of the whole event, check it out here. I made a few appearances at Digimon Con myself!

It was a really fun stream to watch and I had a good time! It lasted about six hours so it ended up being pretty late where I live by the time it ended. That's why I waited until today to post about Digimon Con. If you haven't, check out that livestream if you missed the event and you'd like to see it. I haven't found any reuploads of Digimon Con at the moment, so it's the best I could find currently. I've got another post in the works for later today, possibly tomorrow depending on how long it takes to write. You ever grab a digimon side character and be like "IM GOING TO TREAT YOU LIKE AN OC... NOW BECOME DEVELOPED"

Sometimes! I think I have built my own impression of Willis/Wallace from the many years I've spent thinking about him (for better or for worse), but he's a struggle to flesh out because he's so... intentionally enigmatic and different depending on which source material you're using, rotfl.

I do have some headcanons/ideas I've wanted to expand on for the sake of character development in fanfic regarding the following minor characters (but sadly have very little fanfic to show for it).

(This got kind of long, under the cut to spare your dash):

(The Fuji TV crew! Mainly the two on the right, Sakurada and Chioka--although Yuki and Hiroaki play a small role in the snippets about the other two I've written. Spoiler alert: these two guys get digimon partners in the end!)

(Maki and Daigo! I have been writing a fic that shows select moments of backstory/Tri from Maki's perspective, but its been stalled for a while. ERGH!)

(THIS L-corp scientist! How exactly did we get here, L-corp scientist?? You might actually be the most important living* adult in Appmon, you deserve a real name and a backstory and BOY do I have THOUGHTS on THAT!)**

* “living” meaning “not assumed to be dead” for a significant portion of the series.

But then again, I'm just as likely to take a minor character and give them something to do for the sake of continuing the development of a MAJOR character, or exaggerate their traits/take them to the next logical extreme for a quick laugh (i.e. dumb comics and sketches). This has resulted in:

Cody's grandpa Chikara and old!Gennai bonding over a shared love of prune juice;

Mr. Fujiyama being single and Actually Clueless when it comes to giving advice about romance and dating (and asking Nancy Takaishi on a date anyway, to TK's horror);

TK's grandpa Michel giving Tai advice on his love life;

Davis becoming CONVINCED that Jun is using some sort of black magic/love potion on Matt and Tai, because they have been spending Way Too Much Time Together for No Reason He Can See (hijinks sibling warfare ensues);

Izzy & Ms. Kamiya do more baking together (post Digimon Movie). Izzy is a bit thunderstruck by what she considers "following a recipe" (bizarre substitutions and food combinations that would make 1950’s-era instant food corporations proud), but they have fun and eventually make something edible (to Tai's relief). Now that I think about it, she and Mimi would really hit it off!

(Writing this, I realized I have a lot of ideas about the American English dub versions of the minor characters, particularly the adults, because they are so cartoony/embellished themselves! One of the great things about the dub IMO is it gave them a lot of personality and character traits, which are ultimately a good match for my sense of humor. Also I am Old and like to see the adults do things and go on their own adventures, lol).

I don't believe that any of my interpretations or the situations I would be likely to put these characters in are particularly original or unique to the point of seeming like OCs to me (mmmmmaybe L-corp scientist a little, because there's almost nothing about her in canon and fan mentions tend to be very brief/divided, but I have Many Thoughts about how, exactly, we got there). Ultimately, I tend to be of the opinion that characters exist for the purpose of telling stories, and therefore I end up only developing headcanons or engaging in minor-character character development when it seems appropriate for whatever story I'm trying to tell (which makes individual characters somewhat subject to change from story to story, although I strive for SOME consistency between individual works because I'm particular about that sometimes!). But I DO really enjoy seeing other people's headcanons and stories, particularly since we don't have a lot of in-universe information about these minor characters. Having that much room for interpretation is really fun!

(Jyou/Bike Girl is still one of my favorite minor character ships, even though we as a fandom know NOTHING about her :))

Mancano pochi giorni all’inizio della stagione autunnale e il palinsesto simulcast di Crunchyroll si arricchisce ancora di altre quattro anime, che potremo seguire in streaming da ottobre, in contemporanea con la trasmissione in Giappone.

DIGIMON GHOST GAME

Nuova serie animata dello storico franchise legato ai celebri mostri digitali, attualmente in lavorazione presso gli studi TOEI ANIMATION (Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, World Trigger).

L’anime è diretto da Kimitoshi Chioka (Dragon Ball Super) in coppia con Masato Mitsuka (Digimon Adventure:). La sceneggiatura è in mano a Masashi Sogo (Fairy Tail), mentre le musiche sono composte da Kow Otani (Mobile Suit Gundam Wing).

La storia inizia con delle strane voci online di avvistamenti di “fantasmi olografici”. Hiro inizia a vedere i Digimon dopo aver attivato un Digivice che gli ha lasciato suo padre e insieme a Gammamon comincia a indagare sugli insoliti fenomeni che accadono intorno a loro. È così che durante la sua vita quotidiana, lentamente mette piede nel mondo dei Digimon.

Il design dei personaggi è stato concepito dal mangaka Tenya Yabuno (Inazuma Eleven, Pokémon Horizon: Sun & Moon) ed è stato adattato da Mariko Ito (Anonymous Noise). Per quanto riguarda i Digimon, invece, il design ad opera di Cho Shinozuka si basa su quello originale creato da Kenji Watanabe.

LET’S MAKE A MUG TOO (Stagione 2)

Seconda stagione della serie slice of life basata sull’omonimo manga promozionale dedicato alla città di Tajimi e all’arte della ceramica. L’anime viene accompagnato anche da una sezione live-action, durante la quale le doppiatrici delle protagoniste si cimentano in varie attività, visitando un po’ la città e provando i manicaretti locali.

La città di Tajimi, situata nella parte meridionale della prefettura di Gifu, in Giappone, è famosa per la terracotta Mino. La città è costellata di produttori di ceramiche storiche e di musei d'arte ceramica. Dispone di strutture dove è possibile cimentarsi nella lavorazione della ceramica e di molti ristoranti che servono cibo su piatti Minoware. La storia inizia quando una liceale si trasferisce in una via dello shopping a Tajimi. La aspettano molti incontri, amici, gente di città, arte della ceramica e tanto altro!

A dirigere l’adattamento presso gli studi NIPPON ANIMATION (Anna dai capelli rossi, Haikara-san ga Tooru Movie) è ancora Jun Kamiya (Kingdom). La sceneggiatura è curata di nuovo da Naruhisa Arakawa (Maoyuu Maou Yuusha), mentre è sempre Ayano Yoshioka a supervisionare il comparto animazioni e il character design.

WORLD TRIGGER (Stagione 3)

Terza stagione della serie sci-fi tratta dall’omonimo shonen manga di Daisuke Ashihara, edito in Italia da Star Comics.

Un giorno, nella città di Mikado si aprì un Portale verso un altro mondo. I Neighbor, invasori provenienti da un'altra dimensione, invasero l'area attorno al Portale, gettando la città nel panico. A sorpresa, un'organizzazione misteriosa fece la sua comparsa e scacciò i Neighbor. L'organizzazione, chiamata Border Defence Agency, svolge ricerche indipendenti sulla tecnologia Neighbor e combatte per difendere il nostro mondo. In poco tempo costruirono un'enorme base e misero a punto un sistema di difesa contro i Neighbor. Da quel giorno sono passati quattro anni.

Prodotta sempre da TOEI ANIMATION (Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, World Trigger), la regia della serie è affidata a Morio Hatano (Dragon Ball Super, Saint Seiya Omega). Alla sceneggiatura e al character design tornano rispettivamente Hiroyuki Yoshino (Izetta: The Last Witch, Black Butler: Book of Circus) e Toshihisa Kaiya (Ascendance of a Bookworm). La colonna sonora è firmata sempre da Kenji Kawai (Mob Psycho 100, No Guns Life). .

THE ANCIENT MAGUS’ BRIDE - THE BOY FROM THE WEST AND THE KNIGHT  OF THE BLUE STORM 

Nuova trilogia di OVA basata sul manga fantasy di Kore Yamazaki, edito in Italia da Star Comics. Il primo episodio è stato allegato al volume numero 16 del fumetto, uscito in Giappone il 10 settembre, mentre gli altri usciranno il 10 marzo 2022 e il 10 settembre 2022.

Poco prima che Chise diventasse una studentessa a tempo pieno, durante il sonnellino di Cartaphilus... Chise ha ricevuto un invito all'accademia e lei, con l'aiuto di Elias e degli altri, ha iniziato a prepararsi. In un giorno tanto pieno, è arrivato uno spriggan a casa sua su uno strano cavallo a recare un messaggio secondo cui "qualcosa di male sarebbe accaduto durante la caccia selvaggia". Gabriel, un normale ragazzo appena trasferito da Londra, era annoiato. Da questa situazione in cui era lontano dai suoi amici e in una terra a lui estranea. Da tutto. Guardava fuori dalla finestra, come se volesse fuggire attraverso essa, quando ha scorto del fumo di tabacco. Quando è corso fuori per rincorrerlo è successo l'impossibile: il suo mondo ha iniziato a sovrapporsi a quello nascosto dei maghi.

Questo nuovo adattamento è considerato la prima parte di un nuovo progetto d’animazione, preso in carico dal neonato STUDIO KAFKA, appena fondato da Kouichi Naruse, ex membro di WIT STUDIO (After the Rain, L’Attacco dei Giganti, Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song), assieme agli animatori Takahiko Abiru (designer e direttore d’animazione in Vinland Saga) e Kazuaki Terasawa (direttore d’episodio in Overlord II e Anonymous Noise).

La regia dell’anime è affidata proprio a quest’ultimo, mentre alla sceneggiatura ritorna Aya Takaha (The Ancient Magus’ Bride, The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Those Awaiting a Star), con al fianco Yoko Yonaiyama (Uma Musume Pretty Derby). Il design dei personaggi è sempre curato da Hirotaka Katou (Hoozuki no Reitetsu, The Ancient Magus’ Bride) e anche le musiche sono firmate ancora una volta da Junichi Matsumoto (Plunderer, The Ancient Magus’ Bride).
