So what is chhath ?

Chhath Puja , Chhath or Shashthi Puja is a Hindu festival celebrated on the sixth day of Kartik Shukla Paksha .

It's mainly celebrated in Bihar , parts of Jharkhand, parts of west Bengal, eastern Uttar Pradesh, parts of Nepal.

It is said that this festival is the biggest festival of Maithil , Magadha and Bhojpuri people, it is their culture. Chhath festival is celebrated with great pomp in Bihar. This is the only festival of Bihar or whole of India .It has been going on since Vedic times and it has become the culture of Bihar.

It's a 4 days long festival these include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (vrata), standing in water for long periods, and offering prasad (prayer offerings) and arghya. The main worshipers called Parvatinas (from Sanskrit parv, meaning 'occasion' or 'festival') are usually women. However, a large number of men also observe this festival as Chhath is not a gender-specific festival.

The vibe of chhath has now reached everywhere along the globe and has gradually became famous too. It's now one the identity of Bihar and proud festival of Biharies .

WHO IS CHHATHI MAIYA ?

According to religious texts and mythology, Chhathi Maiya is the Manas daughter of Brahma ji. She is also considered the sister of Sun God. Shashthi Maiya is worshiped in Chhath fast, hence the name of this fast is Chhath. According to the legend, Brahmaji divided himself into two parts to create the universe. In which the form of man appeared in the right part and nature in the left part. It is believed that a part of Goddess Prakriti, the presiding deity of the universe, is called Devasena. Since being the Chhath part of nature, the goddess also has a name Shashthi. Who is known by the name of Chhathi Maiya.

The first day is popularly known as Nahay Khay which is the day of body purification. Parvaitin begins the devotion by taking a bath in holy water.
