Andra Day’s single ‘Rise Up’, which echoes Maya Angelous’ ‘Still I Rise’ was used as the final piece of music on this week’s episode of Doctor Who, Rosa Parks, which was written by Malorie Blackman, best known as the author of the YA series that begins with Noughts and Crosses. The track by Day is sung over the closing scenes of the episode as Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a segregated bus, and is arrested for her action. The episode closes with the Doctor showing Graham, Ryan, and Yaz footage of Rosa Parks receiving the Congressional Medal from Bill Clinton, and then the Doctor opens the TARDIS doors to show them the asteroid named Rosa Parks.

Andra Day’s debut album Cheers to the Fall, from which this song is taken, is out now.
