Remembering Quincy Jones 1933-2024

Entertainment icon Quincy Jones has died at 91. I refer to him as an entertainment icon because calling him just a musician would be too reductive. He was a musician, composer, conductor, music producer, music industry executive, film and TV producer and more. It's no wonder he was an elite EGOT, winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony! This would be way too long of an obit for me to deep dive into all of his achievements, but I'll namecheck my personal favorites.

He did a ton of film scores including The Anderson Tapes, Roots, The Wiz, and The Color Purple (which he also produced). He did a lot of solo music as well, my personal favorite is his 1962 earworm "Soul Bossa Nova", which was featured in a ton of films over the years notably the opening sequences to all three Austin Powers movies.

As a producer and collaborator he worked with Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Lesley Gore, Frank Sinatra, and Donna Summer just to name a few. But possibly his biggest collaboration was with Michael Jackson, producing his best solo albums Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Thriller is one of the early albums I got as a kid and listened to countless times over the years. Now my son has learned about this amazing album and I listen with him. They also collaborated on USA for Africa's all-star "We are the World" single. Jones' music transcends any one genre as you can hear so many sounds coming through his productions.

In 1990 he was host and music guest on SNL. Remember that funny French talk show where Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz were fawning over him? I do! He was also the subject of several docs including the 2018 doc Quincy co-directed by his daughter Rashida. He also appeared in several docs including Sidney (read my review here).

in the source link you’ll find 180 (100px) base icons of charlie gillespie in his role as luke in julie and the phantoms season 1 episode 7. julie and the phantoms is set in the present day and he was 21 years old in the project. do not use my resources for smut, or to rp as any real person including charlie himself. since i make my icons from scratch, please give this a like or reblog if you’re using these.

note: i don’t know if it’s noticeable but i feel like these are a little grainy which makes... no sense given the quality of the initial footage. hopefully, since these are just base icons, they’re still useful!
