See, marketing is important. I know this. Like a lot of things I know the answer, I just pretend I don’t so I can feel better about my acting on it.

Hypothetically, let's say you've written a life-changing, genre-defining, society-shattering work of literary fiction. It's not going to do jack-shit if no-one else but you knows about it.

By the time you've pinched it off, polished it and finally found yourself satisfied that it's finished (or as close to finished as you can get it) you'll probably be sick of it, but that's YOU.

You are the not the person who needs (or likely wants) to read this. That'd be OTHER people. People who are not you. Those people need to find out you and your book exist.

So how does that happen? Marketing. Obviously. Also known as blanketing every available channel and avenue open to you with yourself and your work. Nowadays that's a whole heap of beans. We got the internet these days, see? Which means that a whole heaping helping of awareness-raising brewhaha can be done by YOU. Instagram and, uh, shit like that.

What even is an Instagram? I don't know. It's got something to do with pictures, I'm told.

Being the centre of attention (or trying to be) feels weird, I'm sure. Certainly the thought feels weird to me. You'll be making a nuisance, surely? You’ll be annoying people! Well for one that's sort of the point. Not the annoying part, but the nuisance part. You want to be noticed! You're not being intrusive though, remember this.

Think about it this way. You're seeing all the stuff you're pumping out talking about what hot shit you are, yes. But not everyone is. No-one knows who you are yet. No-one is seeing any of this (yet). If you make the most detailed, work-intensive fuckin' work-promotin' Tumblr of all time but you got zero followers then all that noise is going nowhere, see?

The point is you want them to see. You want to be noticed. You're not shoving yourself into people's living-rooms and telling them, you're sitting in place (well, several places) making a fuss in the hopes that people come TO YOU.

So you craft a presence, you build up this presence and you maintain consistency with it. Make a robust noise! And make it in the right directions. Tagging and whatnot. Find things related to whatever it is you made and nudge your message that way, see?

Uh...I'm actually out of ideas now. I had this all done in my head earlier but now it's abandoned me.

Of course, a lot of also hinges on, uh, confidence in both yourself and your work but that's something else entirely. Let's not even get into THAT!
