You know, thinking about how I was given the framing that the fates of some of the Magical Starsign cast would be after the game being kind of disappointing, I've actually really come to like them.

Like of course one of the big parts of that was noticing that for when Lassi and Mokka blast off out of the Baklava Star System never to return, they were the ones responsible for sending out that cryptic signal to the protagonist on Erd. That really spun things into a much more positive light.

Ok, I said I "noticed," but when I played the game, I inferred it. Of course, looking at the ending pictures after the fact, I was able to notice Lassi's rocket with Mokka on top in the screen showing the protagonist blasting off to follow that signal. It definitely felt nice to have that cemented.

The only thing I want to specifically change there is that Mokka is modular in that rocket. He can be removed from it whenever he and Lassi pleases. Though I have also thought of stuff where Lassi becomes a teacher at Will-o-Wisp Academy in order to have Mokka around for the whole studying rocket science thing. But that's more of an additive detail based on the logistics of Mokka pretty much being chained to Will-o-Wisp Academy for 800 years.

I've come to accept the whole thing of Pico being held back at school for multiple years, especially as how it feels like a subtle sort of criticism of the way schooling is uniformly applied in ways that leave others behind, because as soon as he just drops out he really manages to find his footing. Utilizing his fire magic to help others across the star system.

Now of course that mainly has to do with his magic, and with the way I view Will-o-Wisp Academy, it doesn't focus exclusively on magic. It certainly has a large focus, it's a hecking magic school. But the explicit point of it is to teach children what they need to take up important roles in society, and for that you kind of need a curriculum that expands beyond just magic. But I do still think that Pico managing to find success with strengthening his magic on his own is still a really hopeful message. Heck, I think it's fitting that that's the largest thing that shows because I kind of assume the magic is the biggest reason he stuck around with Will-o-Wisp Academy for so long. Plus heck, we have no clue about what other subjects he may have found better ways for himself to learn as well. It's entirely possible.

Chai's ending is one that really took some thinking to really get. Like I thought that the fact that he was in Lassi's rocket when it blasted off, and this leaving easily able to meet up with Lassi and Mokka soon enough would help things for him. But there was still the whole thing of why does he give up magic in the first place? Like it says he tires of it, but why?

After reading up on the translated lyrics for the Takashi Utsunomiya song, NAME, I realized a very likely explanation. I posit that Chai tires of having his entire sense of self being boiled down to "the salamander who can use magic." Like it is shown that plenty of people that think Chai is weird for being able to use magic. Plus even with Will-o-Wisp likely being a more positive place for him, I can imagine that reputation potentially proceeds himself. He doesn't want to just be the salamander who can use magic even if whoever is thinking about that thinks it's cool. So what does he do about it? Exactly what the ending states, he quits magic.

It's still a bit of a downer, but I do think it's a sensible place for his character to go. Plus I really want to be able to use that as a bit of a jumping off point to think about Chai more since he certainly got the shortest end of the stick out of the main cast when it came to focus in the game.

The only ending I have any actual beef with is Sorbet's. For a game that spends most of its time tearing the police a new one, it certainly fumbles things a bit at the end. Sorbet's great, I love her, she's my actual real daughter. She's not growing up to become a space cop, not on my watch. Like I get the whole thing of her helping to fight the corruption present, and I think that her wanting to do things to affect society for the better is a great place to take her character, it's just, you can't fix a functioning bad system with bandaids, especially from the inside.

So yeah, I throw out that space police stuff and have her become a vigilante space pirate. One who fights for the people and all that. Although any big form of activism would fit for Sorbet.

Now take this with a grain of salt, this is completely baseless speculation here. But given how much the game lambasts the space police, which of course represents the actual police, I wouldn't be surprised if the ending was made in a way to not make higher ups angry or something. Again, this is purely baseless speculation, but this shift does kind of say that to me. But it's also possible for some people have a lot of issues with how the police works on a systemic level while coming to the conclusion that reform is the solution, so who hecking knows. Whatever led to it, Sorbet's ending is the only one that I want to change in any significant way.

So yeah, that was a whole look into my thoughts on all of the endings. I really do think they fit the characters (FOR THE MOST PART) and just serve as great jumping off points for what's next for them. If we ever get another Magical Vacation game I don't think it'd be a direct sequel to either of the previous games, so giving us a place to extrapolate on what these characters get up to is a real nice way to end things. Heck, with the much more likely chance that we simply don't get another Magical Vacation game, that's even more nice. I like having my own little Magical Reunion in mind for things.

Sejak menginjakkan kaki di Akademi Will-O-Wisp, ia selalu mengagumi Pico.

Pico adalah salah satu dari lima kawannya—dan yang paling spesial di antara semuanya. Pico adalah sumber inspirasinya. Karena Pico, ia belajar sihir dengan giat.

Pico—katakan ia cukup tampan—berkarisma. Ia memang ceroboh dan seenaknya sendiri, namun hatinya hangat. Tubuhnya maskulin—meski terkadang sikapnya seperti bocah berusia lima tahun. Di tubuh Pico, menguar bau arang yang khas. Meski amis, ia menyukai aroma tubuh sahabatnya.

Baginya, sihir api yang dihasilkan Pico meski amburadul tampak indah dan memikat. Setiap Pico menunjukkan hasil latihan sihirnya, ia selalu memandangi dengan mata berbinar.

Netra lavender itu selalu menatap Pico setiap hari. Memerhatikan tingkah konyol temannya setiap kali bertukar tawa dengan orang lain atau sekadar memerhatikan Pico yang berusaha keras fokus pada mata pelajaran sihir harian—namun akhirnya pemuda itu pun tertidur pulas.

Katakan ia pengecut karena tidak berani berterus terang pada Pico, namun benar adanya. Yang ia lakukan selama ini adalah mengagumi Pico dari jauh. Memendam, memendam, dan memendam. Ia berusaha bersikap normal. Takut hubungannya dengan Pico retak. Takut Pico risih. Terus menerus membohongi perasaan.

Namun, berkat Pico juga, ia yang semula tidak tahu menahu soal penampilan, berubah menjadi seorang gadis. Rambut panjangnya yang bergelombang selalu ia ikat rapi. Ia mulai mengenakan sedikit pelembab bibir serta sedikit bedak. Berharap Pico akan meliriknya—namun nihil.

Pico tidak akan pernah meliriknya sekeras apapun ia berusaha.

Karena Sorbet.

Sorbet tipe gadis idaman; penyihir elemen air dengan sikap kalem yang memikat, juga salah satu sahabatnya. Dia elegan, berhati besar, kalem, pintar, sempurna—siapa yang tidak terpesona? Bahkan Pico jelas-jelas menunjukkan ketertarikan padanya. Meski Pico sering kali ditolak, namun pemuda itu tetap kokoh. Ia tetap mengejar Sorbet.

Pokoknya, Pico bukan sosok yang mudah menyerah.

Sementara ia hanya siswi biasa—ia tidak cerdas seperti Sorbet, tetapi tidak bodoh juga. Nilai standar, praktik sihir lumayan, wajah standar—tidak secantik Sorbet. Belum lagi netra ungu-nya yang unik dan dark magic yang sudah mendarah daging dalam tubuhnya, yang sesekali membuat sedikit orang merasa terintimidasi. Ia bukan Sorbet yang sempurna.

Betapa irinya ia dengan sahabat perempuannya itu.

Namun ia bisa apa? Memaksa Pico untuk balik menyukainya? Tidak mungkin.

Yang ia lakukan hanyalah merenung—merutuki sikapnya yang pengecut, mengutuk perasaan romantis yang ia rasakan, iri pada Sorbet yang tidak bersalah dan menyalahkan dirinya sendiri yang tidak kompeten.

Rasanya ia gagal sebagai wanita.

Menangis dalam diam dan terus menyalahkan diri sendiri sangat membuang waktunya yang berharga—ia sadar akan hal itu, namun terkadang ia perlu pelampiasan—dan pelampiasan itu adalah dirinya sendiri. Patah hati itu sesak. Ia yang tertutup sulit untuk membagi bebannya pada orang lain, bahkan kepada lima sahabatnya itu.

Namun tidak ada yang akan ia dapatkan dengan bersedih terus-menerus. Ia hanya akan membuat teman-temannya khawatir—terutama Lassi, si manusia kelinci yang selalu menyadari raut wajahnya yang murung akhir-akhir ini.

Mulai saat itu, ia merombak penampilannya. Rambut panjangnya yang biasa diikat rapi, kini dibiarkan tergerai berantakan, tidak disisir dengan benar. Ia berusaha menjadi diri sendiri. Ia sering membaur dengan Lassi yang cerewet atau Chai yang kocak, berusaha melupakan sosok Pico yang terus muncul dalam benaknya—dan itu sangat sulit karena afeksinya pada Pico begitu kuat.

Toh Pico tidak meliriknya barang sedikit pun.

(Saat ia mulai menggerai rambutnya, Pico hanya menanyakan dengan tawa nyaring, “Hei, ada apa dengan rambutmu? Berantakan sekali!” atau “Kau kenapa sih? Ada masalah? Kita ini sahabat, harusnya kau cerita saja padaku!” atau “Kau habis putus cinta ya?”—yang ini hanya ia tanggapi dengan senyuman pahit.)

Menata rambut sesuka hati—meski tidak rapi—juga terasa nyaman.

Selamanya Pico hanya akan menganggapnya sahabat terbaik yang pernah ada—tidak akan pernah lebih dari itu. Baginya, meski menyakitkan, ini lebih baik daripada tidak dianggap sama sekali.

Selamanya Pico tidak akan pernah mengetahui apa yang sesungguhnya ia rasakan. Lebih baik ia biarkan saja waktu yang akan menyembuhkan luka tanpa goresan ini.

Toh, ia bisa apa?

Notes: Saya kangen banget sama game ini. Meski game ini tidak begitu populer, namun cukup asik buat dimainkan—meskipun sistem battle-nya agak agak ngeselin dan rumit, sih. Tetapi karakternya lucu-lucu :3. Ini headcannon saya kenapa rambut Heroine terkesan berantakan dan tidak rapi, namun heroine tetap cocok dengan rambut seperti itu hehe.
