Top 10 Girl Group Releases of 2020, According to Me
This post might not be as detailed as the previous ones, because Tumblr deleted my original draft and I'm still mad about that. For the full top 25, you can find it on Spotify. The top 10 is also in a YouTube playlist.
10. "LA DI DA" - EVERGLOW (September 21)
I am such a big fan of the retro revival in Kpop this year. Every girl group who does it is killing it and EVERGLOW are no exception. It's so catchy, I'll be singing this for years to come. I love the choreography as well.
9. "WANNABE" - ITZY (March 9)
This song is so powerful, in every aspect. With iconic choreography, colourful music video, self-empowering lyrics and amazing styling, ITZY really kicked off their 2020 with a bang.
8. "@Me (Tag Me)" - Weeekly (June 30)
Oh my god, this song!! It's genuinely so good. It's basically a drug. I never expected a debut song this good. I totally have a crush on Jiyoon. But by far my favourite part is its dynamic choreography - props are rarely used this well in Kpop dances. They did such a good job of showcasing their talents.
7. "D.B.D.B.DIB" - SATURDAY (August 3)
This banger cured my depression and my anxiety. But for real, it's so underrated and SATURDAY's cute charms are so addictive. It's got to be one of their best songs to date, but these bitches never miss and I can't wait for their January comeback. I'm so proud of them and their continued growth. I could listen to the outro on loop forever.
6. "So What" - LOONA (February 5)
I totally get why this wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I'm in love with it. The music video is so cinematic. I love its ruthless pace and loud instrumental and I developed a whole new crush on every single member. The bridge is absolutely the best part. Also, shout out to Jinsoul's amazing adlibs.
5. "MAGO" - GFRIEND (November 9)
I didn't expect much from this comeback after unfortunately not really enjoying their other 2020 releases, but this absolutely blew my expectations out of the water, and earns the title of Best Retro Song of 2020. I'm so addicted to it. I could listen to it on repeat all night. And Yuju's pole dancing... cries.
4. "NUMNUM" - DAYDREAM (February 23)
I already told y'all how much I love this song. DAYDREAM deserved a longer run, but it probably was for the best they disbanded anyway. At least they left us with this eternal banger. Like, this song just doesn't get old, and the music video is everything I love about nugu groups. And as much as Sarang wishes she was the main character, Chaeha totally carried this song.w
3. "BAZOOKA!" - GWSN (April 28)
My love for this song is fueled by everyone's hatred of it. Sure, it's not their strongest title track and is kinda different from their usual genre, but it still slaps so hard and it pains me to see people disliking or disregarding it. I just wanna see it get recognition. It was my SOTY for a long time. It's so fun.
2. "ARISONG" - cignature (September 22)
Experimental Kpop music is one of my favourite kinds of music ever. This stuff is just so unapologetically chaotic I can’t not fall in love with it. The only downside is that this song requires a good pair of headphones and full volume to fully enjoy. I didn’t even realise this was my favourite cignature song until recently, but it totally is.
1. "COOL" - Weki Meki
This wasn’t supposed to come first. It was fourth for a long time, until I remembered just how obsessed I actually was with it upon release. It’s just so good. The only thing it’s missing is their signature English opening line, but I guess it’s cool since there’s a whole version of this in English. If you ask me, the English version is even better. But this song is delicious in all forms and every single member caught my eye in the music video. I don’t know what more to say, I just really love this song.
