BTS for Washington Post Magazine Shoot: Perhaps no irony that I would land this assignment for the Sunday magazine on rising sea levels when I happen to be working on a personal project of similar ilk. Art Director, Dudley Brooks, had no idea about my other series, but was seeking help to create a simple visual to tell the story effectively and read quickly. Since a big problem with rising seas is fresh water contamination, my first sketch shows the hand holding a clear glass of water. Dudley asked me to also shoot the hand holding a small tree, which was the better solution. I made a sketch of each concept to, not only communicate what I was imagining, but to also help plan my approach. I wanted the water close to the camera and the angle not too high. The water break at the marina was the perfect spot and early morning sun was the best time for that location. We figured out the lens we would need using a focal length calculator app and discovered a 105mm was best for both captured elements- the arm and water backdrop. Making sure the camera angles matched between the two shots was critical in order to make the final illusion work, so I used an angle finder mounted to the lens to help. Taking those steps really helped and made for an easy translation for my retoucher, Mary Brandt from @imaginarylinesstudio Her magical touches of adding subtle reflections to the water surface and skin helped marry them together in a believable way.
