«To be clear: I am not anti-change. Change can be good. It can be bad. It can be neutral. I am, however, pro-“explain in clear terms what you want to change and why.” When I hear brainless calls for “change”—from politicians, movie stars, theologians, and sportscasters—I always ask: “Can you be specific? And change to what end?”
Alas, specifics and ultimate goals have not been a strong suit of this entire synodal process, unless you think “synodal process” is specific and “synodal process” is the goal. In which case, you can simply mumble: “The synodal process is about change, bringing about more synodal processes.”
And, really, isn’t that the point for so many of the key synodalites? To create a state of flux that calls into question what has been clear and established for millennia, while trying to concretize “processes” that are as ambiguous as they are absolute?
We are told that one goal of synodality is “mission.” But isn’t it more than a bit strange how so many synodalites squirm and scream “prosyltyization!” at almost any attempt to explain, promote, or defend Church teaching? And then have no qualms about enforcing top-to-bottom changes in the name of synodality?»

Advice for someone who's only a Christian because they know what's supposed to happen to people who aren't Christian? Like I got baptized again in my late twenties after going through a breakup and then a subsequent religion-induced freakout, and when the nice pastor asked me why I was there I just lied (I know you're super not supposed to do that in a church but panicked) and said "Just uh--felt right!" But in reality I was just like "Do--do you not know what happens to people who don't do this?" There are a million rules here, I feel resentful and burdened and terrified constantly, but at the same time, I want God to be closer to me as validation He wasn't given up on me and maybe won't set me on fire when I die. (And also because despite the fact that I am scared of God more than ANYTHING, He also brings comfort that nobody else can.) My faith is my life's biggest stressor. I don't think it's supposed to be like this. Or does God want me to be meek and quiet and so scared of Him that I don't do anything, because hey, I'm not sinning then, which is what He wants. Like He gets His way regardless so maybe my motives don't matter, if the end result is the same, which is Him getting His way, because that's most important.
Hello, beloved!
I have no doubt that you're not alone in this—so many Christians preach fear as a tactic of conversion, and the obvious result of this is that people end up Christians out of fear. This preaching is extremely unhealthy, but it exists, and so Christians need to welcome people who convert for these reasons, while helping find healthier ways to be religious! So I'll start by saying welcome, I'm glad you're here, but I'm so sorry that you're here out of fear, and hopefully something I say here or another resource can help you follow God in a healthier way, one fueled by passion instead of stress.
The Bible and many writers over the years have used phrases like "the fear of God," and this can make us think that we're supposed to sit around and be terrified of God and Their wrath. And "fear" as in a healthy knowledge of our place in the universe and remembering that God is greater than anything we could ever imagine? Yeah, I'm down with that. But so many people turn that healthy awareness into being scared, and I think that's something completely different. Proverbs 1:7 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge." Fear is not a place we should live, scared and alone. Fear is a beginning, a place to start, a place to meditate on. Another way to look at it: "John Mallon writes that the 'fear' in 'fear of the LORD' is often misinterpreted as 'servile fear' (the fear of getting in trouble) when it should be understood as 'filial fear' (the fear of offending someone whom one loves)." (x)
Two asks that might be of interest to you: this one from last week about only being religious because of fear of death, and this one from ages ago about whether only Christians will be saved.
God's way is the most important, for sure! But God's way isn't fear and inaction, I promise. I talked in the first ask above about how Christianity isn't just something you think; it's something you do. There is action involved in truly serving God and loving your neighbor.
You mention not doing anything just so you won't sin. And I get where you're coming from, but I think going out and trying your best to serve God and your neighbor, and then making a mistake, is infinitely better than never trying it at all. There is risk in action, yes. And it takes bravery and passion to do the things God asks of us. But They do ask us to do things, not just sit around and theoretically believe, or point to a baptism/conversion as proof that we're a "real Christian." I firmly believe that some of the people who follow God most reverently have never stepped foot in a church. (And there are also those who go to church every Sunday and have never truly followed God.)
You're right—it's not supposed to be like this. Faith shouldn't be our life's biggest stressor. There are other ways to exist as a person of faith, and I pray that you find one. I'm glad that you've found comfort and validation in God as well, and I hope you can let those parts of your faith grow.
I don't know what your church/local community situation is, but if you're feeling like there's a million rules and you don't have the space to explore faith healthily and question things, then I would suggest thinking about whether that has something to do with it. Your denomination/church may not be right for you, and there may be another place where you don't feel like you have to lie or just follow rules all the time! Everyone deserves a denomination/house of worship where they feel welcomed just as they are/where they are in their faith journey. (Check out this ask about choosing a denomination.)

"More than by fear of going astray, my hope is that we will be moved by the fear of remaining shut up within structures which give us a false sense of security, within rules which make us harsh judges, within habits which make us feel safe, while at our door people are starving and Jesus does not tire of saying to us, 'Give them something to eat.' —Pope Francis." —Rachel Held Evans, Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church
I pray that you find the strength and passion to follow Jesus without all the baggage. May you find a place to put your burdens down and find peace.

Clybourne Park examines interracial relationships via time
Watching the present Hillbarn Theater manufacturing of “Clybourne Park” must be a precedence for anybody who desires to have a critical thought in regards to the function of race relations immediately and what meaning: the way it can have an effect on mates, households, establishments, and communities – particularly those that haven’t got a clue About being racist. The clever and goal drama of playwright Bruce Norris has received two Plum Awards: the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2012 Tony Award for Finest Play. Underneath the sturdy steering of Phaedra T. Boughton, Hillbarn’s manufacturing exhibits why he deserves these honors. Acts one and two of the play lie 50 years aside, indicating how interracial relations have modified — and the way they have not. The primary chapter is about in 1959 in an prosperous neighborhood of Chicago referred to as Claiborne Park, whereas the second chapter is about there in 2009. In Chapter 1, a middle-aged white couple, naive Biff (Mary Lou Toure) and her silent husband Ross (Ron Dritz) pack their home in preparation for his or her transfer from Claiborne Park. Though they love their residence very a lot, they hope to get a recent begin elsewhere as a result of their solely youngster, Kenny, killed himself of their home. Kenny, a Korean struggle veteran, returned from the struggle mentally unstable as he needed to perform orders from his senior officers to kill harmless males, girls, and kids. Whereas the couple had been packing their issues, their good friend Carl (Scott Reardon) instructed them in an extended, devious method, that that they had – apparently inadvertently – bought their home to a household of negroes, not one thing appropriate for that neighborhood on the time. Chapter 2 is in the identical home, now in the midst of a transform with new paint on some partitions, a cool white brick hearth on one facet and a contemporary entrance door. Clybourne Park is now an all-black neighborhood however is slowly enhancing. A white couple (Reardon and Caitlin Girdrum) wish to purchase, demolish, and rebuild the home, however are pressured to barter native rules with a black couple (Anjou Hippolyte and Ron Chapman) who symbolize the housing board. The assembly flies away when the character ‘Reardon’ is urged to inform a racist anti-gay joke. It is unclear why director Boughton determined to have the home in Act 2 bear a renovation, fairly than having graffiti and random holes via the drywall because the playwright wished. Apart from that, Eric Olson’s scenic styling is effectively executed, Pam Lampkin’s costumes are acceptable for the 2 totally different time frames, and Ed Hunter’s lighting and Jules Indelicato’s voice work effectively. Though the subject material is troublesome, it’s as related immediately because it was when Norris wrote it. It’s simply as relevant on the San Francisco Peninsula because it was in southern Chicago. Clybourne Park runs Thursday via Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. via October 30 at Hillbarn Theatre, 1285 E Hillsdale Blvd. , Foster Metropolis. Tickets $32-$60 at www.hillbarntheatre.org or 650-349-6411, ext. 2. Originally published at San Jose News HQ

Trouble is My Business
A tough-as-nails gumshoe waits for the right dame to come along.
(2018) Mystery (Random Media/Lumen Actus) Tom Konkle, Brittney Powell, Vernon Wells, David Beeler, Mark Teich, Jordana Capra, Ben Pace, Benton Jennings, Steve Tom, Mollie Fitzgerald, Paul Hungerford, William Jackson, E. Sean Griffin, Laine Scandalis, Carl Bryan, Ksenia Delaveri, Pete Handelman, Steve Olson, Doug Spearman, Lauren Byrnes. Directed by Tom Konkle
Of all the art forms cinematic, one of the greatest – and hardest to do right – is film noir. Most of us when we think of noir think of classic films like The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity and Out of the Past and writers Dash Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane. While the heyday of noir ran from the 1930s through the early 1950s, from time to time attempts have been made to resurrect or at least pay homage to the genre, sometimes effectively (Chinatown, L.A. Confidential), other times not so much.
In a world of corrupt cops and hard-bitten detectives, Roland Drake (Konkle) has seen it all. Once one of the best missing persons men in the business, his reputation has been tarnished by a botched job in which Natalia (Delaveri), a missing girl, ended up dead and the newspapers blamed Drake. Business has dried up, his partner Lew MacDonald (Beeler) has moved on to start his own agency and he’s about to be evicted from his shabby office.
Then in comes Katherine Montemar, a sexy brunette with a sob story; her father has disappeared, the police are dragging their flat feet and now it appears someone is targeting the Montemar family because her uncle has disappeared as well. One thing leads to another and she spends the night with Drake. When he wakes up in the morning, there’s an ominous pool of blood next to him and no brunette.
That might have been the end of it but Katherine’s sister Jennifer (Powell) shows up with incriminating photos of Drake’s roll in the hay with Katherine and a .38 special. Eventually Drake takes on the case and runs into a variety of characters; Jennifer’s overbearing mother (Capra), the cross-dressing and likely insane butler Rivers (Teich), Jennifer’s handsome but inept boyfriend (Pace) and most ominous as well, the corrupt and vicious cop Barry Tate (Wells). They all are revolving around a missing black book and a fabulous diamond that is priceless. Drake will have to think fast, talk faster and know how to use his gun if he’s going to get out of this one alive.
Konkle is a bit of a triple threat man here, directing, starring and co-writing (with co-star Powell) and probably sweeping the floors after shooting. He certainly has a good knowledge of noir tropes and uses them effectively for the most part. He creates a dark and dangerous atmosphere and I certainly won’t complain about the production design although sometimes it is a little obvious that green screen is being used.
The script could have used some polishing. The rapid-fire patter of typical noir dialogue is present but Konkle and Powell are no Raymond Chandler or even Elmore Leonard. The dialogue is generally okay but sometimes it sounds a little clunky and forced. Not every line needs to sound like it’s being uttered by Sam Spade. Also the score is like a Mikos Rosza score from back in the day, only played on synthesizers like a bad 80s thriller. It totally wrecks the mood; the score is also constantly playing. In this case, a little dead air wouldn’t have hurt.
Some critics have judged this a comedy although I don’t think that was the intent of the filmmakers, although there are some fairly funny lines throughout. I do think that this is occasionally over-earnest, sometimes star-struck but never anything but a genuine tribute to a style of film which has become truly a lost art. While I can quibble with the execution in places, I certainly can’t fault the intentions
Oh, and for those who like choices the DVD/Blu-Ray of this release (available on Amazon) comes with both full color and Black and White disks. For my money, the Black and White version is much better, much more authentic. Purists should go for that; those who dislike black and white can always go for the color edition, but I think you miss something that way.

Sterling Forest House
Alexander Gorlin Architects was commissioned to create Sterling Forest House, a part-time residence for a large family that would be both private and unobtrusive. The main design challenge was to gain approval for a bold, contemporary architectural statement in a village famed for its historical residences.
To achieve that balance, the house was nestled into the rock of its steeply sloped site and utilized locally quarried stone to blend into its surroundings. Many sustainable design strategies were implemented to reduce the environmental impact of the house and its visual impact on the local community. The resulting home sets a new architectural standard for its community, and demonstrates how the house construction process can be conducted in a minimally impactful way.
Clad in a local granite of salmon and gray, with a green roof, and mahogany windows with non-reflective glass, the house dissolves into its surroundings from a distance. Arriving up a winding driveway, the house is set into a natural rock shelf, allowing for an L-shaped plan that wraps around an internal rock garden, and entry into the level of living space; kitchen, dining, and living areas.
The entry hall, paneled in reclaimed wood, opens into a hall looking into the garden. A cantilevered frosted glass canopy extends over the terrace to allow for outside living in inclement weather. The lower level includes all bedrooms and private spaces, each with a private terrace looking into the forest. The garage, guest wing, and playroom are in the adjoining wing of the plan. From below, the house takes on the appearance of a castle in the woods, emerging from its rugged and rustic surroundings.
Careful attention was paid to ensure the preservation of the site’s precipice and natural vegetation. Both the location and orientation of the plan were adjusted multiple times to minimize the removal of trees. Similarly, the driveway’s path weaves around older growth trees to preserve them. The building’s footprint was minimized by incorporating the mechanical room underneath the house, rather than adjacent to it. In total, 60% of the site was left untouched to allow the clients to enjoy the landscape’s wild character.
The design incorporated multiple sustainable design features in order to minimize the house’s impact on its environment. Those features included a drainage system along the driveway that redirects rainwater runoff to supply the courtyard garden’s irrigation system. A green roof replaced vegetation removed by construction, and heavy machinery was brought onto the site over protective boards in order to minimize damage to the landscape itself. These initiatives contributed to a construction process that was carried out with as minimal impact to the site as possible.
This house establishes a new contemporary architectural vernacular for a community characterized by 1880s Tudor-style historic homes. This was done in as sensitive a fashion as possible, and in collaboration with the town’s architectural review board.

Shall we try the Death Archives thing again?
I think I’ve left it for a sufficient time that we can do this.
Across all known MMBCs, including the abandoned ones, we have 179 contestants who are still alive and competing, 213 who are dead (including one migrating from the first category), 37 with-a-38th-coming who are pending for current projects (ditto the last brackets), and eleven, all mine, who are pending for possible, or probable, future MMBC entries.
The total of confirmed alive and dead is 392; including the current-pending, the total is 429; including the future-pending, it’s 440. Going from the last time I talked about this eight or nine months ago, this is a respective numbers increase of 69 alive and 63 dead, and a complete-total increase of 144.
(McNair contestants are still counted as all alive for this purpose.)
The number of floater deaths - which, for the uninitiated, are deaths of individuals involved in MMBCs that aren’t exactly contestants, such as cohosts or external murderers - has gone up to ten from six. The new ones are Eleanor Voss and Just of Von Aleshire, Seth Diamond of Francis, and Cheyenne Butler of Collins. Without their inclusion, the total dead would be 203.
Discounting the five floater deaths that overlap with this category through their own killings, the number of known murderers across all MMBCs is 23 - a stark leap from the twelve of last time. Of those from completed projects, I believe five of them are still alive: Alice Juster from Hart, Chadrick Waite from Francis, Christiano Verde from Knight, Raina Mukherjee from Von Aleshire, and Tangelo Teahouse from the concluded-but-not-completed Galactic.
There’s a sixth still alive that I explicitly know the identity of... however, that murderer is the one for SoS MM BC, so I’m obviously not gonna tell you who that one is. From now on, when the word “murderers” is used statistically, it will not include this person among them.
Na na na-na na.
Out of all completed MMBCs, Von Aleshire has the most contestant-based survivors, on account of being a double MMBC: Raina, Dominic Windham III, and Aisling Bellamy. (Being a triple, I suspect that Hathorne will either match or exceed this total, but I Could Be Wrong.) As before, Moon-Blackberry and Angelo are the only MMBCs with contestant survivors that are neither winners nor murderers*: indeed, Lyra Maurer remains the only contestant to be eliminated from such a project through the “under -20 relationship” clause.
I’ve honestly lost track of how many of these Sims are supposed to be in Valhalla, and frankly, I am running out of room for them. Ergo, I’ll probably suspend the inclusion of any more of the dead in the active Valhalla StoryProgression circle - with the exception of SoS deaths, of course, plus one or two besides - until Hopelessness and Paranormal are indeed lifted. They are still going to be in Valhalla, don’t get me wrong; they just won’t be interactable in a gameplay sense. I really need to focus on Amelia’s story and that of the existing Valhalla residents right now, so I can be better and improve and be better.
A bewildering SIXTY-FOUR Sims, dead or alive, have names beginning with C, an increase of twenty since last time. Accordingly, C has the highest ratio of murderers to a letter, with five / seven: Caesar Clamato of Camisade, Camille Mist Sparta of Heliotrope, Chadrick, Charlie Fuentes of Chambers, Christiano, and Cheyenne and Cupid Hawthorne as floaters. It also has three winners to it: Cecil Amity of Ferox, Chadrick, and Cordelia Chicory Veil of Collins (who has not yet become Rafferty).
Chadrick Waite is the only Sim currently in the archives to simultaneously straddle the Murderer and Winner categories.
Five of all of the C sims are mine - Carl, Casey-Mae, Castor, Cordelia, Cree.
The letter A ties with C as having the most winners, with three out of its thirty-eight: Aisling, Anemone Shell of Moon-Blackberry, and Annie Kayse of Chambers. It also contains the second most murderers, another three: Amelia Ruth Limerence, Alice, and Asha Malik of Collins.
The letters D, N, P and S each contain two winners; K, L, O, R and V contain one each. N and P also contain two murderers, alongside B and G; E, H, J, M, R, T and V contain one each with floaters.
The B column contains the most ‘pending’ Sims with five, including one of mine; C, E, M, S, and tentatively R have four each. (Tentatively, because one of the Rs, mine, is merely a placeholder name until the MMBC runner I send her to approves of a different one.)
The most common first names in MMBCs, outside of Katherine, are Daisy (Harlow, MacGregor, and Olson), Felicity (Dubose, Harrison and Rose), Poppy (Blaze, Citrus and Reaves), and Scarlet (Caramel Creme, Rancune, and Tides, plus Scarlett Carnelian). The most common surnames, outside of West, are Chanel (Charlotte, Holly, and Shelley), Eklund (Anissa Alea, Mollie, and Racheal), Ivy (Claudia, Esmeralda, and Junpei), and Rose (Baxtor, Candy, and Felicity again). There are of course several names that can be abbreviated into similar ones - five beginning with Alex, for instance - but the above are the most common with that exact spelling.
If we’re going to be technical, the most common surname on the list is a lack of one! Just, Lithodora, Pomona, and Sprite all appear on a solely-first-name basis.
First names that occur two times are Alex on its own, Annalise, Betsy, Callie, Cynthia, Helena, Iris, Joey, Julian, June, Lady, Laurel, Lily, Percy, Scott, Seth (del Bosque and Diamond), and Sylvia.
Last names that occur two times are Arsenic, Butler, del Bosque, Didit, Ebonywood, Flynn, Greenwood, Haynes, Jernigan, Kang, Lust, Maple, McCabe, Rain, Rancune, Romero, Rothschild, Sparks, Stevens, Westwood, Wilcox, Winston, and Zest. The Arsenics, Chanels, del Bosques, Didits, Ebonywoods, Eklunds, Jernigans, Lusts, Rancunes, and Rothschilds are all related to each other to some degree; the Butlers, Flynns, Greenwoods, Haynes, Ivys, Kangs, Maples, McCabes, Rains, Romeros, Roses, Sparks, Stevens, Westwoods, probably Wilcoxes, Winstons, and Zests are not. Confused yet?
The Sim called Independence is still alive.
Faux starvation (guns, cowplants or knives) remains the most frequent death, having appeared thirty-two times across sixteen unique MMBCs - thirty-four if you count Amelia and Laurel. Six are cowplant deaths, fifteen / sixteen are stabbings, one is a decapitation after a botched stabbing, eight involve guns, one is / two are a slit throat... and Edmond’s was Boot to the Head.
Fire appears twenty-four times, across nineteen unique MMBCs. Interestingly, only the Goth MMBC has the death not be caused by the fire directly, but rather specifies that Ladonna died of “smoke inhalation”.
The most common first cause of death in an MMBC is also fire, it having opened nine of them if we count Galactic’s opening double-death gambit as a single instance. The next most common is Blunt Force Trauma, at five times.
Of the known dead murderers, the most common way for them to die is by stabbing or gunshot (this still includes Hortense, despite the differing ghost look).
There have been fifteen double-deaths in MMBCs; only those of Dublin-and-Junior and Alex-and-Dalton have the causes of death differ between the two. Phantom had the most true double-deaths, with two in quick succession: While Hawthorne and Von Aleshire had an equal amount, Cupid and Eleanor Voss were involved in two of the respective double deaths, and they were not contestants, while all of Phantom’s involved contestants. There have still been only two triple deaths in MMBC history.
There are three Sims with unique death causes / ghost colors within the MMBC context: Charlie, Chokecherry, and Whisper. Reef lost his unique color, Mummy’s Curse, to Fae Bricks’ own poisoning.
Blunt Force Trauma and Jellybean now have eighteen deaths between them - though for the latter, Daisy Olson’s death is counted as that despite it either being a starvation or a stabbing. Weird. The next most common deaths are Drowning and Electrocution, at 17 each.
There are currently sixteen completed MMBCs, nine currently still happening as far as I know, three preparing to start, eleven discontinued, and ten that may be happening in the future that I know about / have names for. This is a total of forty-nine* MMBCs at this moment in time.
* = Fifty-one, if you count the two Sims 4-exclusive ones that may or may not still be happening, the one by yoongisims and the one by the one who originally ran Bucket. I don’t know if they’re still happening or will even start or what, so I’m hesitant to count them until there is actually proof of a beginning for either of them.
I’ve entered Sims into thirty of the thirty-nine MMBCs that are currently known about and ‘public’; ten of them are dead. I have three BFTs, two drowning ghosts, a jellybean ghost, two Buried Alive ghosts, a freezing ghost, and a stabbing ghost. I also have a BFT from Chambers, Dub, and a would-be-stabbing from Limerence, Amelia. I don’t know if any of my creations are going to die in SoS yet...
I also have three Sims alive by victory, gorgeous Lyra alive by conventional elimination, five by current circulation, three by their not having started yet, seven (plus Sera’s first iteration) by oblivion, and my eleven pending. That’s nineteen to thirty-one alive to ten dead, depending on how you look at it.
Sera was one of the four mooted Powers contestants to go on to other projects, and of those four, she is the only one to have died. Lichen Hara is still alive in the same project as Sera, Alice Juster was Hart’s killer, and Regina Largo is en route to Baines.
The MMBCs I missed out on entering are Steele, Francis, Mirage (Shipwrecked Passion), Heliotrope, Bucket (Sims 4), and Phantom. Of these six, only Steele and Francis are complete, and the last three all ended prematurely.
I have run two MMBCs in the past, and am in the process of running another one. I also have six projects slated for the future: Roach, Teufel, Jernigan, Pritchett / Celare, Last Chance, and [redacted]. Vidcund has completed four in the past, is running four at once now, and has at least two ‘named’ ones in my archives for the future, though I’m sure he has many more ideas that he hasn’t told you about, and even some she hasn’t even told me. Jack is quickly rising up the ranks of prolific, having run two and about to properly start a third. Eighteen of the known MMBCs - nineteen including Wormwood - have been ‘single attempts at the concept’ so far.
FROM IGNORANCE BLIND A'SPRANG A SONG OF DOOM / BETRAYER OF BLOOD A'HARKENS INTO THE GLOOM / O'RE STONE, O'RE BLOOD THE CHURCH WILL WEEP / AND WITNESS THE BRIDE IN ETERNAL SLEEP.

Some quick comments:
The Natural really knocked me out - even if it is a definite letdown to learn to care about a (however flawed) protagonist so deeply throughout all his modern-day epic, only to leave him disgraced and dishonored and defeat at the end. That shit is unfair in an author. Yeah, yeah, modern-day Greek tragedy, yadda yadda, ya weren’t exactly subtle about it Mr. Malamud, yeah I got it. I don’t blame the movie adaptation for changing the ending. That’s just kindness to your audience. (I do blame the movie adaptation for making Roy Hobbs such a plaster saint and monkeying about to make one of the romance subplots really improbable, but those are very different and honestly more forgivable crimes.) Damn. I meant to compliment this book? The prose and the vision and the scope really were pretty fabulous.
Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI was amazing and educational and pulled no punches. Just fascinating. Probably my favorite nonfiction this year. Might be my favorite in the whole lot, though that’s a tougher race.
Everything I Never Told You low-key sucked. I don’t know how Celeste Ng is so popular. Same as I don’t understand how Jodi Picoult (whom this reminded me of a LOT) is so popular and so rich. Life’s unfair.
Who the hell is Wilkie Collins? Well, now that I know, my question is Why did I never hear of him? I’m somewhat of a classic Brit lit geek, and I hadn’t known who he was (a contemporary/admirer of Charles Dickens) and what he did (gave us one of the earliest examples of the Great Detective trope - and the book I read was really genuinely fascinating in a Dickensian-but-more-straightforward-and-an-even-broader-vision way.)
One Crazy Summer was my favorite kids/YA book on the list. A real gem and a joy to teach a unit on. Also cool: My students got to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panthers. And we were doing it alongside Marvel Studios. Teaching win of the year.
I prefer Villette to Jane Eyre. Villette was badass in its sheer weirditude. Hell, I think I preferred Shirley to Jane. #heresy #I’llSeeMyselfOut #ButHeyTheNewestMovieAdaptationWasReallySuperb
Similar to the above: So, I figured it was time to finally read something by Agatha Christie. God knows I’ve read many more obscure mystery writers. Time to check out the Queen. It was disappointing: The Secret Adversary had a slow and boring start. By the end, however, I found myself enjoying it, and I decided to give ol’ Agatha a fairer shot by going to one of her “classic” tales. Reader, the “Tommy and Tuppence” book was far more interesting than The Orient Express. The latter had a very original concept, and gets the fame, but the former had an ending that was emotionally satisfying. Neither of the plots were very credible, and I do have some standards in that department. But, at the end of the day, awesome and endearing characterization = Life.
#i've only finished three books since summer ended#damn#it was a great run i was having until then#i currently have six books unfinished and they sure are going slow#perhaps reading a 400-page science fiction novel IN SPANISH was a bad idea?#idk#agatha christie#charlotte bronte#rita williams-garcia#wilkie collins#celeste ng#the natural#bernard malamud#osage#fbi
