A Tag Wrangler's Guide to Tagging on AO3

Tags on AO3 can be confusing and hard when you don't know what you're doing. There are also a lot of misconceptions about how the Archive works behind the scenes, so here's a guide with tips, tricks, and explanations from a writer and tag wrangler (me)!

DISCLAIMERS:

I'm a tag wrangler volunteer, but anything I say here is my own personal experience and opinion, not that of the archive.

I am not: a coder, ao3 support, a wrangler of your fandom (probably), or responsible for that one author who annoys you.

I'm using well-known examples, not things I necessarily write or ship. Don't come at me for your shipping wars.

With that out of the way, let's get started!

1. Fandoms

TL;DR - Use full words, the Archive will take care of the rest.

This is perhaps the most straightforward field. Enter the name of the fandom that your work relates to. If you start typing, the field will auto-suggest fandoms for you!

You'll have the best results with full words. The Archive doesn't know abbreviations!

If you've tried full words and nothing shows up, it might be the first work for that fandom! Congrats!! You can type the name of the fandom and press Enter or Return on your keyboard, and it'll appear just as any other fandom.

2. Relationships

TL;DR - Relationships will auto-suggest based on what you enter in the Fandoms field!

Once you've entered a fandom, the "Relationships" field will auto-suggest as you type with relationships that have previously been tagged* in that fandom.

An ampersand (&) indicates that a relationship is platonic. A slash (/) indicates that a relationship is romantic or sexual.

Similar to the Fandoms field, full names are going to work best here.

Some things to note:

Tags suggest based on how closely they match what you've typed, then by how much they're used

Characters are alphabetized by last name (usually)! The order of names has no other meaning, like who tops, the Archive's favorite character, whatever. It's just the alphabet.

You can leave it blank. If there are no significant relationships, you can leave it empty!

If you want to note that a relationship is background, endgame, anything like that, you can indicate that in the Relationships field, but that's better for the Additional Tags field.

If your relationship isn't showing up, congrats! It might be the first time it's been tagged (or a wrangler hasn't gotten to it yet). Hit Enter and the tag wranglers will do the rest!

3. Characters

TL;DR - Characters auto-suggest based on fandom, and tags are usually their most common name.

This field is to tag the characters who appear in the fic. Character tags will use the most common name in canon or fandom (ex. Tony Stark, not Anthony Edward Stark).

But I don't know if they're a big enough character to tag!

A good rule of thumb is: Would you be disappointed if this was your blorbo and you were looking for fics with them in it? Note: This is a rule of thumb that I, the author, use, and not an Actual Rule anywhere.

If your blorbo is a canonical character and they don't have a tag, it's not personal! They just haven't been tagged yet (or a wrangler hasn't gotten to it yet). Hit Enter and the tag wranglers will do the rest!

If your blorbo is not a canonical character, then I can't guarantee anything. Most fandoms need a non-canonical character to be tagged by at least three separate people before wranglers will make it into a tag. So recruit a friend or two!

4. Additional Tags

TL;DR - Anything and everything else!

This is the field people struggle the most with. So much so that there are three archive tags for it: How Do I Tag, I'm Bad at Tagging, and Tags Are Hard!

This field can tag for anything and everything else that wasn't covered in the Fandoms, Relationships, and Characters fields. Think of it as bright colors on an animal -- it warns some away, and it entices others.

Here are some ideas:

genre/tone (fluff, angst, murder mystery, slow burn, etc)

relationship modifiers (background X & Y, endgame X/Y, X and Y are exes, etc)

character modifiers (mentioned X, werewolf Y, trans Z, etc)

tropes (there was only one bed, fake dating, etc)

any other warnings not covered by the Archive Warnings section (panic attacks, sad ending, nightmares, etc)

alternate vs canon universe?

when in canon? (missing scene, fix-it fic, pre-canon, etc)

If there's smut, any kinks

meta tags about the work (POV, verb tense, drabble, one-shot, etc)

If something doesn't show up, try a synonym; it may be phrased a little differently. And if a tag doesn't exist, make it! Wranglers will link it to where it needs to do.

Wrangling FAQ!

Why do some characters have parentheses after their name and some don't?

The parentheses are used to reduce ambiguity between characters. "Steve" is just some guy, but if I type "Steve (Blue's Clues)", now we both know which Steve I'm talking about.

Why doesn't my canonical blorbo have a filterable tag yet?

If your fandom is very busy, the wrangler probably hasn't gotten to it yet. Be patient! If it's a fairly small fandom, it may not have a wrangler. There's only so many of us, and there are a truly mindboggling number of fandoms on the Archive.

Why isn't my tag "Blorbo is gay and Blorbette is trans" a filterable tag yet? They're gay and trans in canon!

Tags that have multiple concepts are almost never going to become filterable tags. That's because wranglers can only link a tag to one other tag with the same meaning. This tag would have two meanings: "Blorbo is gay" AND "Blorbette is trans".

Just because something is the case in canon doesn't mean that it automatically gets a filterable tag. Ao3 is an archive, not a wiki!

I don't want anyone changing my tags!

Then you're in luck, because we don't! Wranglers don't and can't change the tags on a work. Tag wranglers work on the backend, linking related tags to each other.

Do wranglers really see every tag?

Yup! But no need to be embarrassed. I promise you that your tag is not the weirdest thing your wrangler has seen.

I think a tag has been wrangled wrong!

I guess since I created the characters this would technically be their canon? Even though they're in the Gotham universe? Idk let's call it Schrodinger's Canon

Anyway, some basic tidbits I came up with:

When they're not doing crime, they hang out together sitcom style—usually at Rob's apartment in Burnside. He regrets telling them where the spare key is

Milo lives with Rob and the twins full-time because the alternative is letting him wander the streets as a minor. Rob is a criminal anyway so might as well harbor a teenage runaway while he's at it. The verdict is still out on whether Milo's just a tenant or if there's a familial relationship slowly forming

Gene also doesn't have his own house. He stays with Rob about half the time and the other half he stays with Otto or occasionally his ex-wife. The latter two live in Crime Alley so Gene prefers Rob's place

Blaise got kicked out by his parents for being a stoner. He lives in Milo's car in the parking lot behind Rob's apartment when the car isn't being used for missions. Mac is similar—he has an apartment but spends so much time in his ice cream surveillance truck that he keeps spare clothes and a sleeping bag there

Kellin made a decent amount in their hired killer days and has a few safehouses around Gotham and Metropolis. Their assassin paranoia keeps them cycling between places

Kellin also occasionally sleeps over at Booker's dorm at Gotham U. He's been getting them caught up on pop culture since they fell a few years behind

Otto is the only one trusted to babysit Jackie and Gunner. He might look like a grinch on the outside but he enjoys being around children

Gene invents new prototypes and Otto tests them behind his repair shop before giving feedback. If it involves chemistry, Molly will also give her input

Booker is the chaotic academic who turns every wall he sees into a detective board and often gets the right solution with the wrong formula

Ironically, Milo doesn't like racing video games and Grand Theft Auto. He thinks they're not nearly as exciting as the real thing

Molly and Blaise have feelings for each other but every time they try to get together the universe finds some way to stop them—bad timing, other people, and once a family of hungry raccoons

Gene unofficially coined the comedic physics that follow them as "the Looney Toons force"

The only ones not affected are the twins. Milo isn't affected as much compared to the adults too

Molly is a massive Gotham City Sirens fangirl. Sometimes, to get new ideas for her chemicals, she'll walk through Ivy's latest crime scene to see if she can use anything plant-based

Kellin swears the most but they do it in Thai because this is a PG-13 program

re: the jaime/jason thing

Paco would love Jason so much either that or he'd absolutely hate him and be suspicious from the beginning. either one. Brenda, i think, would like Jason well enough, but I think she'd get along better with Jason's siblings than Jason himself (im thinking Duke, Tim, or Cass). Traci, Jaime's ex, would want Jaime to be happy, even if thats not with her.

Bianca Reyes would adore Jason, and would try at every opportunity to feed him "proper" food. No shade to Alfred, but he's a rich person butler, not quite in tune with the normal folks. When Jason visits, he'll try to help out in the kitchen, and learn her recipes with her, but she'll try (to no avail) to kick him out because he is a guest. He'll end up helping out anyway, but Jaime will just sit at the counter and watch, a stupid smile on his face, which is good because it means Jaime won't mess anything up (unless asked to help with something) but also shows Bianca how much he really does love Jason.

Alberto Reyes would be a little more wary of Jason, since there are mob problems in El Paso that are decently prevalent in Jaime's original solo run and Alberto got caught in the middle of them, which led to his leg injury that causes him to need a cane. However, Jason is good at working on cars, and Alberto owns an auto shop, and the more Jason is around and wants to help out in the shop, the more invested Jaime gets in helping his father out with the business. And anyone who is that good at working on a car and makes his son happy is alright in Alberto's book. It helps that should Jaime get into any trouble, Jason (and the rest of the Red Hood gang) would be there to help.

Milagro likes Jason. He's like the big brother she never had.... Milagro also canonically likes Guy Gardner so i think that bodes well for her vibing with Jason. Jason also totally bribed her into liking him faster with some homemade cookies and a cool knife that she's not supposed to let her parents or Jaime see.

(sorry this was a really long ask! i just know ive seen stuff about jaime interacting with the wayne family but not jason interacting with jaimes family, who i love very much)

PLS! I'm familiar with Jaime's family from the trailer alone, but the ' they don't get out much' tells me everything I need to know.

Rant about why I dislike Kate Medrano.

Ok, a explication, if someone knows about Brujo Ari and his old art you would know that he used to draw a Noriaki Kakyoin with headcanons (more like an auto-insertion), thats was a hyperfemenine transmac autistic mexican-japanese teenager and now its a oc named Kate Medrano, a genderfluid mexican-american, again, autistic, with mommy issues and a enemy named Mary (before she was Marina, Jotaro's ex-wife and in the AU a girl who liked him).

Ok.

Starting with my rant.

First, her personality, even before, Kate or Nori was this type of anti-protagonist said by her creator. I think its cool having a protagonist that its no the average protagonists of teenagers movies or something like that.

I don't have problems with her backstory, I think, but I don't like that sometimes she is not able to see others, for example, in the story, its said that she and Mary were friends at first but after Mary didn't defend her at a party where a boy humiliated her, Kate got angry with her and decided not to be her friend anymore, I mean yes, it is logical, but after that she began to treat Mary as if she were the devil himself. Then, Kate makes Mary fall or something and holds her hand to help her up while she tries to hold back her mocking laughter. After that, Mary wanted to return the prank on Kate but it went wrong and she ended up breaking Alex's arm (the boy she likes and who I'll talk about later) and for some reason the school opens some kind of investigation to look for the responsible.

Now, who is Alex? Well, Alex was Jotaro, another mexican-japanese autistic (?) transmasc. My problems with him and Kate its that both lacks of emotional responsibility. In the story we are told that Mary and Alex were very good friends and that they liked each other (apparently Alex loves blondes) but with Kate's arrival at the institute, Alex became disinterested in Mary, but neither he nor Kate confessed, AND ALEX NEVER HAD THE NEURONS TO TELL MARY THAT HE NO LONGER LOVED HER ROMANTICLY. Then Mary only understood that because of Kate Alex no longer spent time with her (hence Mary also hates Kate).

It also doesn't help that Mary is the stereotype of the pretty, rich blonde girl with loving parents, lots of friends and good grades (something like Cher Howoritz). Because there really is no real reason to hate her other than her jealousy. xd

My main problem with these two is that they seem to think with their uterus because neither of them has emotional responsibility with the rest of the people around them. And something I hate is that Brujo Ari fans forget that they are both gray characters with a background, but many ignore the subtext between the two of them.

I don't hate Brujo Ari, actually, I like his art and Mary. But I don't have another place to write my opinion without being cancelled or something lol.

Edit: Now it seem that either a joke or something real, Kate now is something like a gatekeeper femcel and hates popular girls because he is not popular. (Also she sometimes she likes them too, because is a bi, obviously)

Edit 2: Apparently, their love triangle it's not longer canon, but I don't give a fuck, it doesn't make him better person.

Good lord they bounce off each other with behaviors and stims it's insane.

One time Reena would have a snapping stim and she eventually stopped, only for Candy to start doing it two days later

He still has it.

Imagine if you met your best friend and then you guys found out you would have a sleepover for the foreseeable future

After Candy's parents were murdered mysteriously vanished when he was little, he and Reena got to hang out all the time because he lived at the castle with her.

So they had the same schedule basically just different stuff filling it

Reena would have her princess classes

Candy would research jester tricks and learn how to juggle (his special interest to me <3 his PB for juggling is 10 balls and a sword, yes he did end up stabbing through his hand)

Candy would go to school and learn cool historical events about Down Below

Reena would write down recipes over and over again until she could recite it to her mom that night at dinner and then make it with (almost) no mistakes (her special interest to me <3)

When they reunited when they were both adults after everything that happened to both of them (Reena with her ex husband, Candy with NT) they were basically inseparable

Even thought Candy Pop was a married man now, with a daughter no less, when they first got back to each other, he can't deny he hadn't felt that happy to see someone since he left the castle in the first place.

Reena remembers looking up at the sky from her bedroom window and praying to any of the deities out there that he was safe and okay, and that one day he would come back to her.

There's no romantic feelings between them anymore, they used to be really close like that and they definitely stole each other's first kisses or first dance, etc, but that's behind them now and all they want to do is enjoy each other's company after almost 300 years apart.

Feeding myself in this fandom be hard. So just a implusively written self-indulgent post-canon mu / murrue family ficlet for myself. Timeline be years after SEED Freedom. OOC and everything is all on me as always.Tread lightly please.

For a soldier who has survived so many wars, Senior Colonel Mu La Flaga has lived a rather long life. Hawk of Endymion, Shield of Orb, a retired Commander and MS pilot with a long combat record. Though now a just normal Instructor, the man thinks he has pretty much seen it all. Yet nothing can prepare himself for this scenario.

"I-Instructor Flaga?"

"Private Vesle?" One of his trainees is on his door step. After an extended work trip, his household was expecting a guest this evening, but certainly not his student.

Unless- Said trainee is also staring back at him blankly, but not before he catches the raven haired kid darting a quick glance at the family name plate beside the gate. Flaga.

His intuition sinks in just as he see the hamster's little wheel stops spinning in the boy's head as Private Vesle's realisation hits as well. ---

The sudden yell shatters the peace as Murrue gets startled out of her thoughts. Before she goes on auto-pilot, grabbing the brunette girl beside her protectively behind, pulling out her gun from the holster under her skirt. The ex-captain thankful that she had little time to get changed after returning from a project under Morgenrote.

An enemy? Although this was a gated compound for designated officials and staff of Orb?

No matter. Murrue charges out towards her main door, battle ready and only to find a furious husband and a bewildered stranger in casual wear outside their house. Who pales even further looking at the gun pointed at his way.

Eh?

Just what is this situation?

"Mu? What's going on here?" Murrue starts, lowering her gun a little after deducing its not an attack on her home. Now just utterly confused by this bizarre posturing by these two males.

"That's what I want to know!" Mu shoots back, keeping a narrowed eye on the one before him. The glare causing the younger man to take a weary breath, but he does not step further back. Which is impressive, considering the situation which is not in his favour. "M-mama? Papa??"

Their eldest daughter, Astella, peeks over from behind, blinking at the incredulous scene before her. Until sounds of steps thunder down the stairs and join in their weird gathering out by their front yard.

"What's going on?"

"Are we under attack!?" "Papa? Mama? Oh! Yo! Hello there, Ken!"

Mu snaps his head around to face his sons, a brunette with glasses and set of little blonds. One armed with his kendo blade, two with their archery bow. Their second and their youngest, twins. These are their four children, Mu and Murrue's pride and joy.

Said father however, is currently less than pleased, and now jabbing a finger, pointing incredulously at the raven haired kid before him.

"Astella Flaga, do you mean to tell me Kenichi Vesle is that Ken? Your boyfriend?!"

The question seem in trigger their usually sweet daughter, who is offended by the unusually rude question. "Eh?? What are you on about, papa? Yes! What are you both on about? Ken?"

"Hah??"

"A-Astella...I...didn't know... Instructor Flaga is, your father?" The kid, Kenichi Vesle, finally speaks up.

Astelle looks as if she cannot decide if she wants to laugh or cry.

"...There aren't many Flaga's in the Orb military, Ken."

"Ah. You, actually have a point."

Oh. Oh dear. This is a mess.

Murrue sighs with a soft shake of her head. She finally puts back the safety lock on her gun and buries her face into her hand. She was simply expecting a nice, peaceful family dinner. Now Murrue just prays the entire neighbourhood has not heard their epic misunderstanding. She steps up and gives her unhappy husband a gentle pat on his back.

Time for damage control.

"In any case, I think we should all head inside and discuss this instead." Murrue smiles sweetly, the young man afterall, is their guest.

Mu grumbles, but slowly, he relents albeit very reluctantly. Which causes Murrue to tug the muscular arm, pulling her husband back and allowing Ken to move inside their home. The cautious young man following behind their girl quietly as if he is about to march to his doom.

Target secured. At least, that is one down.

"Caelus Flaga, Kai Flaga, Sui Flaga. Go set the table for dinner."

"Roger."

"Alright, mama.

"Okay."

Ground crew deployed. Her boys obediently obeys without a problem. Now all that is left is the tricky one-

"Hello, yeah- no,stop greeting your elders as an old man! I-"

"Mu La Flaga, disconnect that line now, and get inside."

"...Yes, Captain."

PEANUT ROMANO AND HARIN KIM RELATIONSHIP HCS

Peanut is quickly to love, but slow to actually show it. It definitely took him longer than normal to come to a conclusion on wether or not he was actually in love with Harin or if it was some kind of odd fascination, he doesn’t wanna end up like ricky, or like johnny. As much as he admires the guy, he’s in way over his head with Lola. He had to test the waters, it was very much a game of ‘do you have a crush on me’ chicken. It was only a matter of time before one of them folded and most likely, it was peanut.

He’s got his own way of showing love without saying i love you. Lighting cigarettes, passing tools and playing mommy- making sure Harin isn’t burning herself out trying to wrangle all the other greasers, and making sure she’s not neglecting herself if she is tired. It’s cute, unconventional and a little strange, but cute. He cares so deeply about her that he doesn’t want to weird her out by showing it too openly, which in turn makes it all the more more weird.

Peanut is a little embarrassed that he’s the younger party, it sorta adds to all his usual musings abut his height ans slightly effeminate voice. He always thought that girls go for older guys because they’re more experienced and mature. He just can’t fathom why a girl as beautiful as Harin would even dream of picking lil ‘ol peanut. I mean Ricky is right there, i mean yeah he’s half comatose weeping into a photo album of his ex but my god, he can really woo the ladies. Peanut thinks he’s got a lot to prove to Harin in this relationship, it kinda rests on her to show him, that its okay to ease up.

Once he’s comfortable, he can say i love you more freely. He definitely uses it sparingly but it pays off. It actually means something when peanut says i love you. He doesnt toss it around willy nilly. It holds genuine significance. Along with that, he also invites Harin to meet her mother. He’s fiercely protective of his mother, so getting Harin to meet her is his way of proving he trusts her fully, and definitely thinks that Harin is a good fit for him.

Harin doesn’t look herself today, she looks a little distant. Out of it. Over the blaring radio and the sound of machinery pumping, growling and whirring, he swears he can hear her sighing. It’s cold out, the air is crisp and sharp, and the little draughty pockets of the auto shop feel like death, even despite the heat of sweaty bodies and engines. It’s the kind of weather your mother warned you about before you went out to play in your childhood. The kind of weather that can make you very very sick, according to old wives’ tales anyway. Peanut’s strides are casual, he tries to look disinterested as he strolls over to where Harin is stood, swaying slightly as she stares off into nothing. Peanut clears his throat and retracts his hands from his pockets “you feeling okay?” He asks, the soft lilt of his voice making him sound especially feminine. Damn, not quite what’s he was going for. Harin seems to snap from her trance and turns to Peanut, her expression softens. Close up he can see she’s definitely not well, she can barely smile. “What? Yeah, I’m okay, just off in my own world yknow?” She offers, its a weak excuse accompanied by a weak smile, her eyebrows are knitted together and there’s a light sheen of sweat on her forehead. “You don’t look fine… let me feel” “Larry I’m okay” “let me feel”. She hasn’t got the strength to say no again, so she relents and lets Peanut press the back of his hand, surprisingly soft and even more surprisingly oil free to her very sweaty forehead, she’s definitely feverish. “You should go to the nurse.. take the day off. You dont look so good Har” Harin looks down at her shoes for a second and back up to Peanut, his face is stern. He means business. “Okay Larry, let me grab my jacket” he smiles and nods slightly, watching her move off to pick up her stuff and make for the exit. “Don’t come back until those roses are back in your cheeks, okay?” “Okay Larry, I’ll see you later” she moves again, her foot is halfway out of the door before Peanut stops her again “Hey Har?” She can’t help but chuckle a little “Yes Larry?” “I love you”

Thinking about AniRedux Sinnoh and I think I figured out how it would function (yes I will make a graph and nobody can stop me)

AR Sinnoh is Platinum's Sinnoh (very snowy borderline perpetual winter while the outskirt cities are the complete opposite being in perpetual spring/summer and places like Oreburgh Pastoria and Hearthome being in perpetual autumn)

Sinnoh has no extra gyms and only has 2 reserve leaders (Riley being Byron's/Roark's and Flint and Volkner being interchangeable)

The Celestica people are very complicated, they are believed to have fully died out and can be confirmed by writings of their own but that is completely contradicted by people coming forward saying that they themselves are Celestica/of Celestica decent and have been able to prove it by translating Celestica writings (they are written in a blend of ancient Hisui and Unknown and are completely illegible to anyone who is not Celestica since the written language itself was a gift given to them by Uxie)

The Celestica people also have a thing akin to immortality,if someone comes from a Celestica lineage then their life span is just slightly longer than it should (ex normal human longest being a bit over 100 whereas CL would be 130), now if someone were to come from a direct unbroken Celestica lineage they are pretty much pseudo immortal (ie Volo and Cogita,their maximum lifespans are well into 400 nearing 500), AR Cynthia is directly related to the two with her herself having Celestica parents (Cynthia has been around for roughly 230 years now,she has had to drastically change her appearance throughout the years along with her name as to avoid suspicion) Celestica do age slowly hence why Cynthia still looks to be in her mid 30s despite being over 2 centuries old

(This one is a bit out of left field) Hisui itself is a pocket dimension namely being the PLA Hisui

There was originally the 1 Hisui and no pocket dimension shenanigans but it had split into 2 when the Dimensional Rift above Mt Coronet first formed (there was no noticeable difference between the two), AR Hisui became Sinnoh just like in vanilla canon whereas PLA Hisui is stuck in a permeant time loop

How the loop occurs is that the events of PLA happen but instead Akari takes the role of the player character since Dawn/Lucas haven't yet been isakai'd, events go as normal up until the final Volo fight, Akari loses since she does not have Arceus' blessing and Volo goes onto resetting the world with Giritina (ie fight 'Arceus' and force a reset even though the Arceus he fights is only a shard and on top of that the reset is destined to happen)

Nobody remembers anything after the reset not even Volo (literal hard reset like fully deleting everyone's memories) and it all happens again exactly the same time and time again

Arceus has tried to isekai people into PLA Hisui but it has always failed resulting in their deaths almost immediately after being sent in due to injury sickness ect (those loops are auto doomed since only 1 chosen can be sent in per loop)

Ingo was eventually chosen and sent in which he did almost die in the Alabaster Icelands but was rescued, he essentially acted as the player character and instead of being Pearl Clan he had joined Jubilife, timeline continues as planned (1-1 with PLA's story), Ingo was ment to be the person to finally stop Volo and end the resets for good but he had failed too and the world was reset

A thing about resets with a chosen still in the pocket dimension is that if they are not recalled in time they will then become a permanent fixture in the loop (Ingo suddenly becoming Pearl Clan and having no memory of anything before) said person can be brought back to their time only if the next chosen is able to send them through the rift (Arc-Phone is basically a chosen's lifeline and only 1 can exist per loop)

Melissa Miller: Alex's great-grandmother, a pre-war actress who starred in schlocky sci-fi movies

Martin Miller: Melissa's husband, ran an auto shop

Jacob & Gwen Miller: Alex's parents

Lady Luck/Miss Fortune: Courier's mother, the previous god of the Mojave region, luck goddess (obviously). died when the bombs dropped but echoes of her remain.

Death of a Hero: Courier's 'father', runs the cafe of broken dreams.

Kaga: technically a cut fo2 character. Alexandria's younger brother who was sick of living in her shadow. Also Feargus's father.

Raziel Rafferty: Samael's adopted daughter. Most successful of the Enclave psyker experiments; has technokinesis.

Nihil: god of mass death (ex. you could see her in Nipton). more of a force of nature than a person.

Killjoy: the Pack's resident veterinarian/medic/animal wrangler. was a parahunter until a jetpack crash left him severely injured and his squad kinda abandoned him. bitter and cynical, usually hides away in his (heavily fortified) shack.

Transceiver: the first successful Enclave psyker experiment; heavily mutated; his powers basically act as a psychic beacon he can't turn off. leader of the capital wasteland super mutants.

This will be a lot different from the HxH canon world, and this is my first fic so it may not be written super well.

It was a hot august day in York New city, though people were still bustling the streets, and you could hear car horns from miles away.

Up in a tall apartment building lived a short man named Feitan Portor, age 28 and five years out of university, he was looking to become a business owner, his dream was to have his own company.

He worked hard in mathematics and all kinds of science to become an astronaut, since it was year 2450, everything was super futuristic but even with all of the technology no one has ever flown out of this galaxy.

It was Feitan’s goal to do that.

The short man was in his apartment room, sitting calmly at his desk to do work on his computer, not feeling energized at all even though having three cups of coffee and a fourth one on the go.

He typed pretty fast on the computer, not even having to look at keys to do so.

His head perked up a little when he heard his phone buzzing but it was all the way over on his bed.

‘why didn’t I just leave the phone beside me…?’

He sighs and reached over to grab it while his body was half off his work chair, he managed to grab his phone right before falling to his demise on the wooden ground.

He answered and puts the phone up to his ear, using his shoulder to keep it up while typing on his computer still.

“Hello?”

“Uh, hey Feitan, it’s me Phinks.” The other person on the line said.

Feitan stopped typing and then grabbed his phone, feeling a bit surprised.

“Oh, hey there, we have not called in a long time…usually when you do something bad has happened.”

“Well…nothing bad happened, don’t worry, I was calling to say that I’m gonna be visiting the city and I was wondering if you’d like to hangout?”

Feitan knew he’d say that.

They were best friends through elementary school and all the way out of high school, they practically hung out every day, staying over at each other’s house and playing video games or listening to some music.

“Hangout?” Feitan asked, with his quiet, whispery voice.

“Yeah, we haven’t done it in awhile, y’know? I wanna catch up on a few things.”

Feitan leaned back in his seat, staying quiet for an extra moment, thinking.

He guessed he should say yes to the other’s request, it wouldn’t hurt to hang out at all, and the thought of catching up on things with him made him kinda happy.

“Yeah, that sounds good, we can hangout on the weekend if you want…I will not be busy.” Feitan nods, but knowing the other couldn’t see his nods.

Phinks was on his porch while talking to him, standing up and watching the rain.

“Seriously? Great! I’m gonna be flying in on Friday at noon, then I’ll have to fly out Monday morning.”

Phinks, age 27, lived all the way out in Oregon, living in a small town in the forest mountains, he was definitely an outside kind of man, going fishing every other weekend, same with hunting, though he worked a few jobs, he works as a mechanic engineer for cars, working in a calm auto shop, his second job was something else revolving around cars, which was a Body Shop and he worked there for plenty of years now, being the manager as well.

He also owned a few horses, using them to get around in the large land of forests, he usually ride them without any tack on, and the horses just knew the way home or knew all of the trail rides by memory.

“And hey you’re still dating that guy right?” Phinks asked a bit loudly…

Feitan frowns a bit at the other man’s voice.

“No, we broke up like two years ago, Phinks.” He said in a quiet manner.

“Oh is that right? Can’t believe I didn’t know that.”

Feitan slowly closed his computer.

“Yeah, uh, it was…hard, left me here to raise a kid, and not a single ounce of child support.” The short man mumbled.

Him and his ex boyfriend got a kid because they thought they would would eventually get married and have a life together, but Feitan was wrong, a few years into their relationship he learnt that the man wanted nothing to do with him and flat out cheated on him and left.

Feitan wouldn’t want to use the word ‘stuck’ but he was left with his daughter, Lin, she was only four years old, but even though she knew she only had one parent she was a really happy kid, she went to school, having a bunch of friends, she went on field trips, and her all time favourite thing in the world was having a father-daughter date with Feitan, he usually took her shopping, or go out to a restaurant, also to go eat ice cream, but sometimes they wouldn’t even go out and spend money, he would take her out to the city park and just walk around.

Though Feitan got too many comments asking if he was Lin’s older brother, he guessed people said that because he was just short…

Phinks stayed silent on the other line, but he finally began to speak.

“You have a kid?! Damn I know nothing about you now, man.”

Feitan let out a heartfelt chuckle.

“Yeah, sudden News flash is it not?”

“Definitely is, I do not see you as a father, but whatever.” Phinks laughed a bit.

“Well, anywho, I should get going, I’m gonna get flooded with calls of people who didn’t get their car fixed in time, I’ll text you what flight gate I’m in, I’ll also text you when I land.” He said more calmly now.

Feitan looked out his window and nods.

“Sounds good, talk to later Phinks.” He smiled a bit and then hung up, immediately looking up at the ceiling and smiling more.

He contained all his excitement during the call but he couldn’t help to let it out now, he was gonna see an old friend…

Friday, at 11:30 PM, place: airport

Feitan had got up in the morning to get a shower, do his normal skin care routine and get a little dressed up.

He was nervously waiting in the airport, glancing at at everyone who walked out of the gate, he didn’t know why he felt so nervous, he was going to see an old friend who he shared everything with.

He checked the time one last time before he lifted his head up and saw Phinks walk out of the gate, looking around for the short man, though he spotted him and they locked eyes.

Phinks stood there for a moment before hurrying over to him.

“Hey.” He smiled softly, looking down at him.

Feitan looked up at him and only did a half smile, though he was happy.

“Hey.” He said back, but before he could say anything else, Phinks grabbed him and pulled him a hug, a very sincere one.

Feitan was shocked and didn’t expect it but he slowly hugged back, sighing.

He could feel all of his tension in his body just wash away,

“This is new…I thought you didn’t like hugs.”

Phinks chuckled a bit and hugged him a bit tighter.

“Hm, well you have an exception.” He said quietly.

Feitan laughed quietly before letting go.

“Ok— ok, you are suffocating me.” He patted the others arm.

Phinks noticed he was hugging him pretty tight he he let go.

“Oh I’m sorry— I’m used to hugging normal sized people.”

Feitan raised a brow. “You did not just say that.” He crossed his arms.

The taller man let out a boisterous laugh.

“Hell yeah I did! I’ve been wanting to say that for years.” He leaned back a little.

Feitan just rolled his eyes and looked away.

“You are as annoying as a remember…” He mumbles.

“Yeah is that right? At least I wasn’t as annoying as you were back in the day, always picking at me.”

“You deserved it.”

“Whatever…well, how’s life in the city? Busy I bet.” Phinks said and readjusted the back pack on his back.

“It is, really overwhelming sometimes but y’know…how was you flight by the way?” Feitan asked.

“Ugh, it was awful, I was sitting next to a really annoying couple who couldn’t get their hands off each other, and we had to land the plane multiple times because of weather…longest ten hours of my life.”

Feitan let out a little laugh, nodding.

“Yeah I know what you are talking about it, I had a two day delay when I moved here like five years ago then a kid sat behind me and kicked my chair the whole flight.”

“God yeah I hate that, I would just stand up and yell at the parents or some shit.”

“I almost did that but the mom did get the kid to stop.” Feitan let out a soft sigh, looking back at Phinks. “Anywho, uh c’mon, I will drive you to my place.” He said and started to walk to the exit.

Phinks nods and didn’t hesitate to follow him, he still had a small smile on his face.

.5:30 PM, Only a few hours have passed.

Feitan had made Phinks supper but he then said that will be the last time he will do so.

Phinks didn’t mind, he liked making his own suppers anyways.

Feitan had made soup and he was drinking it, though he heard a knock on the door which made him put his spoon down

“Oh that must be Lin.” He stood up and quickly walked to the door, to open it and let his daughter in.

Lin smiled brightly as she walked in. “Hi dad!” She exclaimed happily and slipped her bag off her back.

“We had the funnest school trip! We went to the zoo and—“

She noticed Phinks sitting at the table, she has never seen him before.

“Who’s the man at the table, dad?” She asked, stepping closer to Feitan

Feitan shook his head a bit and puts his hand on his shoulder.

“That’s Phinks, an old friend. Phinks, meet Lin, Lin meet Phinks.”

Phinks leaned back in his chair and just waved, he never really knew what to do around little kids, he wasn’t ‘scared’ of them, he just avoided them.

“Hi little person.” He said.

Lin sheepishly waved back and almost hid behind Feitan.

Feitan chuckled and looked at her.

“Do not worry, he may look really scary but he’s not.”

“Oh, ok.” Lin said and nods.

“Here— come sit at the table with us, we’re having your favourite soup.” Feitan said and he walks to the table with her, helping her up on the chair.

“Oh and tomorrow, I am gonna be busy so I am gonna drop you off at grandma’s house, ok? She said she wanted to bake cookies with you.” He said.

Lin smiled again and nodded enthusiastically.

“Yeah! I love baking with grandma!” She grabbed her soup bowl and started eating some.

“Yeah I know you do.”

Phinks stayed pretty silent, watching them, but mostly Feitan, he kinda forgot how nice the other looked, it made him feel a little more nervous now, and now he couldn’t get his eyes off of him, but once he noticed the other looked at him, he immediately turned his head, looking somewhere else, feeling kinda flustered and awkward.

His mind was racing a bit….did he have feelings for Feitan?
