2023 book recs! (to read and to skip)
inspired by @deanmarywinchester's incredible rec list and general reading reviews!
RECOMMEND:
The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells: I love you autistic androids. forever and ever. I'm pretending the adaptation is not happening bc I don’t think the screen can do it justice so I’m simply enjoying every single page of these books before there’s inevitable show Discourse. I love the plots and the dialogue and just like murderbot I too wish I could be left alone to watch my shows.
Something That May Shock and Discredit You by Daniel Lavery: this book has a couple excerpts on here that make the rounds and piqued my interest and holy shit. if you are trans and queer and probably autistic. read this book as fast as you can. I felt seen in every word and also. Absolutely read to filth.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant (the masquerade series) by Seth Dickinson: I think I finally started this series because of my bestie @ofbowsandbooks (as is the case with so many things) but who's to say. either way I read this towards the beginning of the year and have not stopped thinking about it since. if you read it. please listen to so much (for) stardust by fob. I cannot recommend the specific kind of damage it does to you while rotating baru and tain hu in your mind. just. tailored to me in so many ways (fantasy story about imperialism and masks and lying and the terrible power of math) so I do admit bias there.
Settlers by J Sakai: If you can only read a book or two about understanding why colonialism/capitalism is at the root of all evil...read this book. It's at the top of my general list of political nonfic recs (next to capitalism & disability by marta russell and border & rule by Harsha Walia). I like to describe it as a leftist pov of us history that pulls apart some of the liberal/white "optimism" of People's History of the US.
They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif Abdurraqib: I think this was also based on an excerpt I saw on here. I finally started getting into memoirs/essay collections this year and WOW. I mean, even if that genre isn't your thing, you should still read this book. It's just so so good, and utilizes unique topics (particularly music, I love his FOB essay) to explore both small personal moments and larger existential issues.
The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon: This is considered a staple of anticolonial movements & education for a reason. Definitely helpful for understanding the global decolonial revolutions of the 1960s.
Decarcerating Disability by Liat Ben-Moshe: An incredible study of abolition from a disability lens. Clear (if a bit repetitive at times) but overall an engaging read that definitely brings a much needed addition to larger abolition texts.
Chain-Gang All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah: I read this one after seeing @deanmarywinchester's posts about it. I read it in two days and it knocked me so hard on my ass. Especially as someone who was obsessed with the hunger games in middle/high school. Just. Wow. holy shit. we knew this already but abolish prisons police etc etc and also we have GOT to be done with tiktok. and alexas. and just being okay with casually reposting/consuming videos and images of violence against people of color and and and -
Exile & Pride by Eli Clare: transmasc disabled PNW crew rise up!!!! the trauma of growing up as all these things in a small rural town!!! I have very rarely felt so deeply seen and understood as when I was reading this book. It's heavy emotionally & topically, so warnings there. I did struggle a bit with it but only because of how deeply some of his story reflects my own.
Innocence & Corruption by Aiyana Goodfellow: This book and its author demand a fundamental shift from how we as a society view and treat children. If you are planning on having kids, have kids in your life, are a teacher, etc etc, cannot emphasize enough how important this book is to remind us that kids are people now, and they deserve autonomy, respect, and support.
Honorable Mentions:
he who drowned the world by shelley parker-chan : this was moved down a category only because the book before this one (she who became the sun) is literally just setup for this sneaky gut punch. So as a duology, could be stronger. this book as a standalone? Wow. There's some banger lines and concepts and characters in there. (Wang baoxiang. Just. Oh boy). Definitely fascinating in convo with baru cormorant, and I think a reason it's lower for me as well is because the lens of hwdtw is much more of an internal power turmoil than a study of imperalism, which I'm biased towards interest-wise. I read this purely because of @ash-and-starlight's incredible art, so please go check that out if you read the book - It is absolutely worth the read for their art.
the Black Jacobins by C L R James: I'm a french revolution bitch. it was a special interest of mine as a kid and got me invested in history. that said, we gotta talk about france's fuckery. which is to say, slavery/genocide/colonialism etc etc. This book is somewhat tricky to read at points, especially in keeping track of who's who, but a really incredible explanation of the beginning of Haiti's fight for independence. If you enjoy French or Caribbean history, anticolonial revolutions, and some of the nitty-gritty details of history textbooks, this is for you.
life under the jolly roger by Gabriel Kuhn: who here has seen black sails. (thee gay pirate show. Original edition.) strikes a good balance between an understanding of what pirates have/can/could represent, and absolutely clarity about their actual violence, legacy, and politics. Informative without being drawn in by the romanticism or dismissing its power completely.
the essential June Jordan: Politically relevant and also just lyrically beautiful poetry.
hell followed with us by Andrew Joseph White: trans horror fans w/ Christianity beef, this is for you. I am NOT a horror fan, but it was so well done and resonant with me that I stomached the gore for it and do absolutely recommend. if that’s your thing
DO NOT RECOMMEND:
the invisible life of addie larue by ve schwab: I love VE and am a bit of an apologist for her prose over plot bc her worldbuilding is always so cinematic to me, but this was such a frustrating waste of a brilliant concept. It was just...boring? Neither Addie nor Henry are particularly interesting (Henry's relatable, but again, not engaging as a character) and for someone who's been alive for a long time, I expected more unique flashbacks and worldbuilding. I expected the ten thousand doors of january, but this was not that, although I think at its soul it wanted to be.
the lies of locke lamora by scott lynch - Been meaning to read this forever since it was recommended a lot on here if you liked six of crows. I would say a similar setup (dickension fantasy) but that's about it. Characters aren't that likeable or clever, the action is slow, and I take issue with the ending.
unwieldy creatures by addie tsai - I so badly wanted this book to be good. It was not.
a day of fallen night by samantha shannon - It was fine, it's just such a long book I think time is better spent elsewhere, ya know?
provenance - second ann leckie book that i've finished unimpressed. despite murderbot being top of my list, this similar vibe of sci-fi did not strike me as one with such a unique clear voice. It just felt like a more inclusive version of many average space books.

Tumblr media
👁 👁 👁 👁
“I swear I’ll haunt you in your sleep, Zoldyck! ‘Ya hear me, boy?!”
A body thudded as this man’s speech was cut short. A tired Illumi Zoldyck came calmly walking towards his target with the straightest face ever. Even at the sight of blood, darker than any he had seen, his lips remained neutral and his eyes remained half-lidded as they were. The sound of the mini heel on his green loafers echoed as he continued to approach the deceased man before him. The ballroom was completely empty, leaving Illumi all by himself for who knows why and what else could happen.
Being a bounty hunter was challenging in itself but being a bounty hunter and dating an assassin is a totally different story. Criminals began to spread the word of your alliance with the Zoldycks and formed many gangs to retaliate against you both. Both of you have been shot at, stabbed a few times, and even been robbed! After being robbed at gunpoint and dealing with trauma, it nearly made you quit your job because of the stress and life endangering events faced almost everyday but for Illumi, it didn’t phase him at all. Not in the slightest. After being robbed of his engagement ring, he simply went to another jewelry store and bought another. He did not cry, quiver, or shutter.
After Illumi phoned his father and gave him a brief overview of his success, he proceeded to the exit. The light flickered, giving the impression that an eerie figure stood at the end of the hallway. Electricity hummed the closer someone approached it, sounding like a fly trying to find its way back outside. An atmosphere like this one did not bother Illumi in the slightest but he did not like being there no longer tha needed.
“Y/n! Y/n! I know you can hear me!”
“Now is not the time to play around. We need to vacate the premises immediately,” He thought to himself. He began to bang on doors, opened them up, and yelled your name to the heavens trying to find you.
“Oh! I know,” he said out loud, snapping his fingers.
He opened a tracking app on his iPhone that displayed all of his contacts that had recently shared their location with him. Once he began the search, it revealed that you were 400 kilometers away. Tracking your phone was something he did every time he could not find you. At times it was adorable and sometimes it was weird and intrusive. Illumi’s intrusive behavior stems from his mother, Kikyo and no matter how you put it, it is very unhealthy. Caring can easily turn into an obsession that can make you do unsound things.
“Illumi! I am in the bathroom. Can you give me a second,” you ask, slightly irritated, washing your hands quickly. You did not want to keep him waiting any longer. It was always a mystery if it was his anger or anxiety that prompted him to bust the door down just to make sure you were safe. Poor Illumi Zoldyck. His expression of love and how he cared for others was rather odd and unusual. It is safe to say that you were the best thing that has happened to him.
As you open the door, he stands with his long arms crossed in a huff, his long legs creating an upside down “V” shape gazing at you a slightly angry about your disappearance halfway through the mission.
“Where were you,” he asked, moving closer to you. “While I had to complete both of our jobs, you have been playing around in the bathroom.”
“Illumi, you’re—“
“Shhh—“ He placed his index finger over your mouth, bending down at eye level, and smiled devilishly. “—I’ll still pay you but you owe me a favor.”
“—But I wasn’t playing in the bathroom!”
As you were pleading your case, Illumi nonchalantly typed away on his phone. He quickly showed you his screen that listed your every step within the last few hours. It displayed where you were, the longitude and latitude, who you spoke with, and if you took any pictures. You had no idea that a smartphone could disclose so much personal information and since you have shared your location with him, he has access to it all.
“—Care to tell the truth?” Illumi raised his left eyebrow, using his somewhat intimidating tactic used when he was a child.
“Fine. Ugh! Why do you have to be like this?”
“Like what?”
“You’re…too overprotective. Give me some space sometime! Hell, you might be pleased to know where I was.”
“Pleased?! I nearly had a heart attack when I realized you were not by my side! Are you satisfied that my heart weakens everyday?”
“You’re so dramatic. You might want to take up acting, you know.”
“Ha, ha, so funny,” he said flatly.
As you roll your eyes in irritation, Illumi closes the leftover space between you two. Still bent over at eye level, he places his large hand on your cheek, blinks twice, while his straight face remains. His cold hearted personality seemed to always overshadow his body but all of his warmth seemed to be omitting from his palm.
“I care about you deeply. I cannot have you running away doing God knows what while we are on a dangerous mission like this one.”
“Illumi, I—“ He places his index finger over your mouth again, shushing you as he continues to, as they say, pour his heart out for once.
“I understand that you are a bounty hunter, but if I’m being honest it is a much different line of work than being an assassin. It is my job to care for you while I complete some of the harshest tasks on Earth.”
“I’m not a child, Illumi. Do you want to know what I was doing? Those longitude and latitude readings are very wrong, by the way.”
“Huh? Ok…where were you then?”
Still, your face was placed in his palm, his large eyes staring in yours somehow made you feel lost. Your delayed answer made his palm involuntarily tighten.
“I bought you this pocket sized white teddy bear…?” This statement was propositioned as a question rather than a statement because you were afraid of how he’d react. He was already startled and giving him a plushie would only make it worse. Instead of reacting calmly he would assume that giving him a plushie would imply that he was weak.
“…Valentine’s Day is a few days and I know you’ll be in Las Vegas handling business so I decided to buy you something that will remind you of me while you’re away.”
The small plushie was a white teddy bear holding a heart. It’s eyes were as big as Illumi’s. Before you could hold it up to him, he grabbed it rather gently, stood up straight, and held it in front of his eyes for examination. He turned it around a few times as if it was on a rotator. He placed his index finger inside of the keychain loop and finally smiled. He placed this small object against his heart just before he bent down to meet your eyes once again.
“I always think of you. Come to think of it, that must be why my shots have been off.”
His face scrunches in a humorous way. As usual, his smile fades away and returns to his neutral look. Illumi’s silence signaled that his mind was running a million miles a minute. So many questions and feelings begged to be released but something was preventing him from doing so. You could tell by the look on his face that he wanted to suffocate you with a bear hug but he wouldn’t do it. He has been trained to think that assassins do not need friends, cannot express their feelings, and can only do what is needed to get the job done. It’s ironic; the Zoldyck children are not allowed to have friends but they are allowed to have lovers only so they can reproduce and keep their legacy alive. Love has no part in their marriages; they are only contracts, literally. As in love as Kikyo and Silva were (and still are), it would seem like they’d emphasize the importance of love to their children. As a result, they all have adopted an odd way of showing affection for others.
In this instant, Illumi’s face appeared to be more endearing than before. His face had darkened significantly, his cheeks were fatter like they were stuffed slightly, and his eyes twinkled. You smiled as you have truly found the key to his heart. All this young man wanted and truly desired was to be loved not for his abilities or job, but for him and only him. Your warm hands, now on his cheeks, felt overwhelmed with warmth. Just the sight of him at that moment was breathtaking. The flickering power, the unrest souls in the next room of his targets, and the eerie atmosphere seem to fade while you gazed into his eyes. Pressing his cheeks together, puckering his lips was indeed both an amusing and cute sight to behold.
“You are so adorable, Illumi. Did you know that? This “bad boy” behavior and clutching a teddy bear is too much to take in. I might just send a photo to your mother. She’ll screech and tell the entire world.”
“You wouldn’t dare do that ,” he said, words muffled; lips still puckered. He seemed to flush more and more every time you’d remind him of how vulnerable he is right now.
“Try me!”
“Mother would just embarrass me, you know that!”
“I know. Then I’d be able to see the sweet, soft assassin that I see now. All warm and cuddly. I’m sure you just want to sit in the back seat of your Dodge and just fall fast asleep, am I right?”
“I plead the 5th,” he said flatly.
“I was right! Ha, ha!”
“Would you pipe down already?”
Illumi’s right hand was placed directly behind his torso carelessly pressed against his lower back. He appeared to be in pain but made no mistake. If asked about it, he’d lie just to debunk any statements about him being weak.
“What is in your hand? Let me see it.” Your demanding tone turned into one that a mother has, specifically Kikyo.
“It’s nothing,” he said, slightly wincing in pain.
“Let me see it now, Illumi or I swear I’ll—-“
“Fine! Fine! Just don’t make a big deal about it, alright?”
A promise is a promise; that is what you said to Illumi as you agreed to not over react once you saw his hand. A healed bruise nearly scarred the entire base part of his hand. A light red dotted cut looked as if someone took a exacto knife and grazed it. You gazed back into his eyes. He looked hurt; longing for attention for a cut that had already healed. As childish as it may seem, just the slightest bit of attention is something he craved, even if something like this had been healed a long time ago. Him wincing was something he conjured up to grasp your attention. He raised his hand in front of your mouth, leaving it bent for you to grab.
“Do you want me to kiss it and make it feel better?”
“Please,” he replies, smiling slightly again.
The touch of your soft, moist lips made his smile grow larger, his cheeks flushing yet again. A few overlapped lipstick stains remained on his hand, something he might get tattooed so everyone knew who he belonged to.
“Why can’t you be this way every time we finish missions? We could have sooo much fun.”
“If I have too much fun, I’d abandon my remaining missions and father would not like that at all. He might even put out a contract on me.”
You sigh somberly. Illumi had his moments of anger, roughness, and kept his distance but moments like this, where he wasn’t afraid to allow his softer side resurface made you feel content as if you completed a mission of your own. Gazing into his eyes one more time, they sparkled greatly.
“At least I can enjoy this while it lasts.”

Disneyland Modern AU
For @littlelonghairedoutlaw‘s PotO AU Fic Contest! Summary: While at Disneyland, Christine is determined to make Erik have fun and figure out his favorite ride.  Rating: PG or K+  Ship: Erik/Christine kinda. More friendly than romantic  AU: Modern
“Erik, please at least try to enjoy yourself.”
A noncommittal exhalation of breath, too light to be a grunt, was the response. The dour look on Erik’s face only worsened as more people lined up behind them, becoming more crowded. “The ‘Happiest Place on Earth’, indeed,” he monotoned.
Christine sighed in exasperation and rummaged through her petite backpack as the line moved a step closer to the entrance to the park. “Look, I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t like at least one-” she held up her index finger to emphasize her point, “-one thing at Disneyland.” She withdrew a set of plain Minnie Ears, complete with a pink bow and situated it on top of her head. It barely peaked out from her massive amount of fluffy curls, but it remained steadfast. “You cannot be serious with that ridiculous thing.”
“When in Rome, do as the Romans do!” “I have been to Rome and they certainly do not care about the doings of tourists. They would rather-” “Erik, it’s just an expression,” Christine said with a roll of her eyes as he continued muttering about barbarians. Perhaps this was not the best idea she had come up with. She was determined to have fun with Erik in one of her favorite places, but he always had to make things more difficult. His rotten mood would not spoil her magical day, and she was focused on making his day magical as well.
“You said you wanted to go with me,” she reminded him as she passed her ticket along to the taker. A scant, a delightful tinkling of approval, and she passed through the turnstile.
She waited on the other side, watching Erik fidget with his hands and recheck his prosthetic nose, complete with fake mustache. He was overly anxious, she realized, with a sinking feeling. He was denied his mask, for they were not allowed in the park, and so he settled on some makeup and a detachable nose. Despite his disguise, he wore dark shades to try and hide himself as much as possible.
Erik held his breath and passed through the turnstile, as if he was going to be tackled by security and thrown out of the Magic Kingdom, and worse yet, be tossed into California Adventure, but he passed through without any protestations. He exhaled in relief. “Well, now we’re here so let’s get on with it,” he said. Christine grinned and grabbed his arm. “First stop, the Mad Hatter’s!”
“WHAT?”
Walking at a determined pace, but walking nevertheless, Christine pulled Erik by the elbow straight down Mainstreet. They passed by window panels that depicted scenes of various Disney movies. “These were my favorite as a kid,” she told him, imitating a grinning Ariel rocking back and forth. “They would release the whole movie in these little scenes for whatever came out that year. They stopped doing that, though…”
Erik leaned in and inspected the window next to hers. Cinderella was waltzing with Prince Charming, the clock tower looming behind them.
“Let’s go!” And he was yoinked away. Christine inhaled the intoxicating aromas wafting throughout the street as they headed toward Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. Confections enticing her with their sweet promises nearly stopped her in her tracks, but she had one thought in mind that she dare not tell Erik until they arrived in Fantasyland. “ABSOLUTELY NOT,” he declared as she held up a simple black Mickey hat. “Everyone gets one, Erik!” Christine said joyously. Despite his black sunglasses, she could feel his piercing gaze.
“Christine, you’re wasting your time and your money.” She handed over the money to the cashier, who was eyeing Erik with uncertainty. “Ma’am, we have other hats that-” “Just ignore him. He’ll grow to love it.” “Would you like that embroidered?” “NO HE WOULD NOT,” Erik interjected. “Yes please! Erik, if you wouldn’t mind. That’s E-R-I-K. No ‘C’.” “We will do that in one moment!”
“Wonderful! Thank you!”
The embroidery machine whirred to life as Christine turned back to Erik with a grin to match the Cheshire Cat’s above her.
“Fie, a pox on both your houses,” he glowered at her, but she just continued to smile without regard to his fuming.
“Hate me all you want, but this will help you blend in with everyone else.” She was handed the Mickey Ears, smartly embroidered in swirling yellow letters with “Erik”. She stood on her tip toes and snugly placed it on top of Erik’s head, securing the elastic bad around his chin. “There! You can throw it away after today, but for now, you’ll have plenty of Disney fun with me!”
He slumped his shoulders in defeat. “If I must…” “You must!” Christine told him cheerfully, because damn it all, she was going to make sure this day was fun for him. Even if it killed her.
Or even if it killed him.
At Christine’s insistence, they hit Fantasyland first, “since we’re already here,” she explained, “although Adventureland is the best, by far.” His arms were tightly folded on the Mad Tea Party Teacups, as Christine dutifully spun them faster and faster, laughing all the while. His sour disposition never faltered through Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, or King Arthur’s Carousel. Christine could have sworn she saw the slightest crack of a smile on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride upon their exit into Hell. But however quick it might have been, it vanished before she could have been certain.
“Now I know this next one will be your favorite!” She cheered gleefully as they soared up and down through the air on Dumbo -
“-a character who faced discrimination and torment on a daily basis until he had capital value,” Erik commented with a growl.
Christine’s face fell as their Dumbo rose up into the air with the other elephants before making their descent. “You don’t have to put it like that…” she said softly. She shook her head, “no matter! Dumbo isn’t your favorite.”
As they exited the ride, she stuck her chin out defiantly and posed like Peter Pan. “We will find what you like today!”
Erik adjusted his dark glasses delicately, avoiding too much contact with his fake nose. “That’s highly unlikely.”
__________________________________________________________
By the afternoon’s end, Christine was in a slump. The cheer had been sapped from her, despite her earlier exuberance. She sat defeated on a bench in New Orleans Square, face cradled in her hands. Even her hair lost its usual fluffy bounce, and her curls were bedraggled. Erik approached her, holding two churros from the nearby cart. Christine made no acknowledgment of him. “Christine, I acquired the confection you demanded.”
She rotated her body away from him and focused on Tom Sawyer’s Island. She watched as the raft loaded with people and drifted away from them, toward the island.
“Christine?”
She continued to ignore him and instead gazed at all the happy families, couples, and others enjoying their time in the park.
Erik stiffly sat beside her, his body rigid in a perfect posture, holding out the churros mechanically. He stared out alongside her, in the direction of her gaze.
“Christine, you are obviously upset, and it is highly likely that the variable that caused you to be upset is me.” He took an audible breath, and continued to stare straight ahead, but Christine shifted her gaze to him. “I cannot begin to rectify the situation and my behavior if all I can infer is that you are sullen.”
Her mouth was set in a line, not willing to smile or frown. Yes, she was irritated with him, and this false way of apologizing without outright doing it grated on her nerves. At least he was trying to be a bit more considerate to her emotions.
“Yes, Erik, I’m ‘sullen.’ Any suggestion I have, you immediately turn it into something negative. I’m trying to show you something you’ll enjoy, but you keep nit-picking and draining all the fun out of it!”
“That’s hardly the case-” Erik began to counter, but Christine cut him off. “-YES, it is!” She stuck out her hand and began counting on her fingers all the dismissals and critiques he had. “You hated Tomorrowland because you complained about all the outdated technology and how you could create better animatronics.”
“Why have a ride that is essentially recreating the traffic we experienced to even get to this park? It’s absurd!” “You didn’t like Space Mountain because you calculated the speed and scoffed at how slow it actually was.” “It’s all illusions, Christine. It’s only 28 miles per hour-”
She shoved another finger in his face and she continued her infraction count, “- you were utterly disinterested in Big Thunder Mountain,” “-ain’t, Christine. Thar ain’t no way that would appeal to me. And the excavation of that Tyrannosaurus is completely ludicrous-” “-You were whining all throughout ‘Galaxy’s Edge’,” “I was just saying the Empire is a bunch of fascists and the Rebels are terrorists-” “IT’S STAR WARS, ERIK!!” Christine shouted, throwing her hands up in the air. “AND THEN when we went to Critter Country,” “-crawling with tiny children I might add-” “-you described the Winnie the Pooh ride as a fevered dream you had on opium once,” “-to be fair, it was a rather good dream-” “-and then you kept saying how exploitative Song of the South was and ruined Splash Mountain. HOW DID YOU MANAGE NOT TO GET WET? I’m STILL ringing out my hair and that was nearly an hour ago!”
“One can take a measured approach to these things, my dear-”
“-AND you would not SHUT UP about how historically inaccurate Pirates of the Caribbean was!” “NO ONE,” Erik rose to his feet, “IN THE ENTIRE WORLD, HAS EVER WORN HATS THAT LOOK LIKE BUCKETS! THERE’S NO HISTORY HERE, CHRISTINE!”
Christine jumped to her feet and stood defiantly to Erik, despite him still looming over her, “IT’S A RIDE, ERIK! IT’S MAKE BELIEVE! PRETEND! IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE FUN!!”
“BUCKET-HATS!!”
As the two of them panted in their frustrations, a baby somewhere nearby began crying. Christine broke first and flopped back down on the bench with a groan. “I just wanted you to enjoy yourself.” She slowly removed her headband and traced her fingers over the Minnie Ears. “This place means so much to me… My Dad and I would-” her nose got that peculiar warm tickle that means tears were soon to follow. She shook her head to rid herself of that anguish. “Disneyland is just my happy place, and I wanted to share that with you, too.” Erik lowered himself down onto the ground, to look up at Christine as she fought her emotions. He removed his dark sunglasses to be more open with the woman sitting in front of him. “I have been having fun,” he told her softly. “Perhaps my enjoyment of things is more unconventional, but spending this day with you is more precious to me than anything else.” A half-smile appeared on her lips. “Crowds and all?” He offered her the churro as he rose from the ground to sit beside her. “Suffocating crowds and all.”
Christine smiled into her churro, biting into it quietly as she and Erik sat in thought. She leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder. His entire body tensed and grew rigid at the sudden intimacy, but he slowly relaxed. He hesitantly lifted his arm, and with taking pause, wrapped it around Christine’s shoulders. Christine had nearly finished half of her churro before Erik finally tasted his own. The crispy sweet crust pairing with the fluffy light middle delighted him. “Christine!” He exclaimed, “these are incredible!” “Yeah, Erik. Disneyland churros are amazing. I always need to have one. OH! And the beignets, too.” “I don’t think you fully comprehend the magnificence of this pastry! It’s entirely delightful!” He took another bite, “sweet, but not overpowering!” Another bite. “The delicate taste of cinnamon!” Another, “the exquisite crunch with the decadent exterior!”
Christine covered her mouth with her hand, struggling to keep from laughing at Erik’s sudden enthusiasm. As he continued exclaiming his delight, probably with more gusto for Christine’s benefit, the adhesive on his prosthetic nose began to disintegrate. Her amusement quickly turned into concern, knowing how poorly he would react if it fell off. “Erik,” Christine cautioned him, suddenly serious, “Erik, maybe you shouldn’t-” And that’s precisely when his nose fell into his lap.
Erik yelped several octaves higher than Christine thought he was physically able to, clamping his hands over his face instinctively. His mustache hung limply above his thin lips, exposing the jagged scar of his former cleft palate that ran up to his nose cavity.
The cry made several people look in their direction, certainly not aiding in Erik’s mortification. “The poor guy dropped his churro!” Christine explained, putting on her Stage Voice and gesturing to the fallen delicacy.
That seemed to satisfy the onlookers as Erik curled up on himself, hiding his face as best he could. Christine rubbed his hunched back soothingly as he silently suffered. “Shh, shh... Erik it’s okay! There’s a bathroom nearby where you can apply it again. Although honestly,” she said with a shrug, “no one will care if you don’t reapply it. There are so many people who come here with all different backgrounds and abilities that-” “Christine, save me your princess fairy tales for the moment,” Erik hissed through gritted teeth. “I’m more Victor Hugo’s Hunchback than Walt Disney’s, and people aren’t kind no matter where or when we are. Or perhaps I should just kidnap a princess into being my prisoner like some kind of Beast. That will turn out well!”
Silenced by his sardonic words, Christine helped him to his feet, and hurried him along to the restrooms in New Orleans Square. They were mercifully close, and as Christine was just about to tell him as such, a small boy approached Erik. “Jack Skewwington!” He squealed gleefully, bouncing up and down, pointing at Erik and back at his shirt that displayed the character.
Christine had to bite her lips to keep from laughing and making the situation worse as Erik blushed in fury. The mustache had vanished somewhere along their short walk, fully exposing Erik’s death-like face.
The small boy hugged Erik’s spindly legs in his delight at finding the Pumpkin King.
Erik’s jaw clenched, unsure of what to do. His hands flexed into fists at his side, wanting to throw the child off of him or pat him on the head awkwardly.
“Owen!!” Cried a nearby woman, running up to the boy. “I don’t think he likes that, honey,” She held out her hand to Owen and beckoned him back to her. “But Auntie Pwincess...” he whined taking her hand. She turned to Erik, “I’m sorry, your Disney-bound is really good. He thought you were Jack,” she said breathlessly, trying to excuse the young boy’s behavior. “It’s FINE!” Christine interjected before Erik could say anything, “he gets that all the time. You gotta keep the secret, okay?” She pressed her finger to her lips and winked at the boy. “Have a good Halloween!” She waved to the pair as Owen waved back. “Bye bye!”
Erik stood there in shock, unable to process what had happened. Christine handed him a tube of eyelash glue and his fallen nose. He took them mechanically and left to enter the restroom. After a few minutes, he returned, adjusting his sunglasses back on his face and lightly tapping his raw upper lip. A few flecks of glue remained, but only Christine would notice. “I suppose that’s what you get for wearing black pinstripes at Disneyland,” she laughed sheepishly, trying to make light of the situation.
“I’d rather not discuss it,” he said, with all of his curt authority, but there was a certain softness to his voice. “Where to next?” He asked Christine, offering his arm with jerking, stilted movements. She took it and smiled. “My favorite ride, but you have to promise not to criticize it!” Erik gave her a mock aghast look. “I would NEVER-!” “Erik. Promise me.” “Oh, all right, I promise. I’ll hold my tongue. Now which one is it?”
Christine lifted her arm to the towering manor before them. “The Haunted Mansion!”
“Haunted, hmmm? I should really leave my card if they want a proper Phantom…” Ignoring him, Christine giggled with excitement, bouncing not too unlike their little visitor from before, and dragged Erik along behind her. She was all but skipping through the Pet Cemetery and pointed out all the puns on the various tombstones and mausoleums.
“I. M. Mortal? The evidence proves the contrary, sir,” Erik said. Christine shot him a dirty look and he held up his hands in innocence. “It was a joke, Christine! They’re all deceased.”
She narrowed her eyes at him and whipped her hair at him with a small, “hmpf!” She strolled quickly into the front doors of the mansion as a glassy eyed Castmember ushered them in with a deadpan, “look alive. Right this way.”
Erik squeezed his way past through the bodies of the crowd to get back to Christine’s side. She gazed up at the foyer in awe, excitement vibrating from her being.
“When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls.” Christine clasped her hands in giddiness, mouthing the words along with Paul Frees’s narration. “Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still — that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight!” “... well I feel called out,” whispered Erik in Christine’s ear. Christine snorted in laughter.
“Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion. I am your host, your Ghost Host. Kindly step all the way in please, and make room for everyone. There’s no turning back now.” One of the walls opened to reveal another room. The group shuffled their way in as another Castmember stated in the deepest voice he could muster, “Drag your bodies away from the walls and into the dead center of the room.”
“Are these puns going to continue throughout this journey?” “Yes, Erik!” Christine hissed at him in a whisper. “And if you don’t like it-” “Our tour begins here in this gallery, where you see paintings of some of our guests as they appeared in their corruptible, mortal state.”
“You misunderstand, I love it entirely.” Erik looked longingly at Christine, aching to make her happy. She inadvertently was standing similarly to the ballerina-tight rope walker portrait stretching just behind her.
“Your cadaverous pallor betrays an aura of foreboding, almost as though you sense a disquieting metamorphosis. Is this haunted room actually stretching? Or is it your imagination — hmm?”
“Oh. Well good!” The smile she gave him was dazzling.
“And consider this dismaying observation: this chamber has no windows and no doors… which offers you this chilling challenge: to find a way out!” Christine echoed the laugh of the Ghost Host with chilling accuracy.  “Of course... there’s always my way-!”
Christine released a practiced blood curdling scream as lightning flashed and the hanged body of the host appeared above them. Erik jumped at her terrifying cry, but she was still smiling in delight. The lights flickered back on and a door slid open revealing another hallway in the labyrinthine manor. “Ohhh, I didn’t mean to frighten you prematurely,” Christine cooed along with the dialogue, smirking at Erik. “The real chills come later. Now, as they say, ‘look alive,’ and we’ll continue our little tour. And let’s all stay together, please.” “I was concerned about your safety,” he huffed, a slight blush rising to his sunken cheeks. He adjusted his Mickey Ears as they had skewed in his jump. “You were scared, just admit it!” Christine laughed as they walked through the hallway, where the curtained windows showed a thunderstorm raging outside the Mansion. To their right, more portraits flickered with the lightning, showing not all was as it seemed.
“Christine,” Erik said sensibly, “a hanged body is something that does not frighten me.”
“I’m going to ignore that,” Christine told him, peering at the two busts whose faces turned to follow them down the line queue.
“There are several prominent ghosts who have retired here from creepy old crypts all over the world. Actually, we have 999 happy haunts here — but there’s room for 1,000. Any volunteers?”
Christine nudged Erik with her elbow. “They’re looking for a new ghost. Need a new job?”
“If you insist on lagging behind, you may not need to volunteer.”
Erik tapped his finger against his lips in thought. “That’s not a bad notion…” “You’re not ACTUALLY considering it, are you Erik?” The two of them stepped onto the moving walkway and slid into their doom buggy carriage to whisk them off into the bowels of the mansion.
“Why not,” he mused. “Put my skills to the test, and so far, I am pleased with the traditional techniques they’ve been utilizing for their optical illusions.” The safety bar lowered on them, bumping against Erik’s gangling legs. “I find the older tricks are the most effective.”
“We find it delightfully unlivable here in this ghostly retreat. Every room has wall-to-wall creeps, and hot and cold running chills. Shhh, listen!”
Their ghostly carriage rocked and swayed, providing them the direction where to look as they journeyed down the Corridor of Doors. A floating candelabra surrounded by a hall of mirrors that led to nowhere illuminated the scene to the right as groans from a moving casket cried out on their left. Leering eyes warped the wallpaper pattern into a frightful brocade as narration continued.
Christine cooed in contentment as she leaned back in the Doom Buggy and watched the creeping horrors as they passed by. Several doors rattled and growled with threats of danger on the other side.
“Ha! They used the effect revolutionized in ‘The Haunting,’” Erik hummed in his amusement as they passed by a particularly intimidating bulging door, the wood creaking with every ‘breath’ of movement.  “In fact,” he craned his neck around and tried to carefully observe the other doors, despite moving away from them, “this whole hallway is...a marvel...” Christine gave Erik her best vacant expression and told him, “the house is alive..!” He actually chuckled at her reference. Christine was pleased at his amusement.
“It’s about time you found something you like-” But she was cut off by the seance Madame Leota was conducting as they swiveled into a pitch black room with instruments floating all around them.
“OoooOooh, a medium,” Erik wiggled his spidery fingers in sarcastic spookiness, “how obnoxious,” he scoffed, but his smile remained.
“Do not mock the great Madame Leota!” “Goblins and ghoulies from last Halloween, awaken the spirits with your tambourine!”
Their vehicle turned and face the Seer, to reveal she was not seated at her seance table in front of the crystal ball. Rather, she was a disembodied head inside the ball, floating above the table. The jingling beat of a tambourine was the response, as if the ghosts of the mansion were responding to her words.
“Creepies and crawlies, toads in a pond, let there be music from regions beyond!” Music began to play as they were ushered from Leota’s chamber and into more darkness. Their Ghost Host whispered in their ears as they ventured deeper into the Mansion. “The happy haunts have received your sympathetic vibrations and are beginning to materialize. They’re assembling for a swinging wake, and they’ll be expecting me… I’ll see you all a little later.”
The organ music swelled around them with the melody of the mansion as ghostly apparitions began swirling in a waltz in a ballroom before them. Duelists stepped out of their portraits to fire, spirits were piling in from a crashed carriage, gathering around to feast on the rotten food on an elongated table. And a man in a top hat played the organ with great vigor, despite it being off-key.
“The Pepper’s Ghost illusion, of course,” Erik whispered to himself.
“My favorite part!” Christine squealed in a hushed voice. “Yes,” he murmured, entranced as well, his eyes focused on the organ player, “I can see why…” Listening to the repeating music, his finger unconsciously swayed to it, as though he was conducting it and learning along. Christine hummed along, dancing in her seat as they turned away from the spectacle and into the attic, where the thudding of a heartbeat echoed in their heads. Scattered before them were portraits of various couples in their wedding attire. The woman, all the same in each one and smiling pleasantly, but every groom was different. Then, the swing of an axe, and the heads of the grooms vanished. A piano with only the shadow of a pianist played a discordant wedding march. At the end of the attic, was Constance Hatchaway, the bride herself, in her glowing ethereal splendor. “I do,” she whispered innocently, her bouquet revealing an axe, “...and I did,” she hissed, the axe shining with light. “Here comes the bride…”
“I know I’m desperate,” Erik remarked, “but I’m not that desperate for a bride.”
Christine scoffed, “you sure about that? OH! HERE HE IS! THE HATBOX GHOST!”
Christine leaned forward as they left the attic and a ghost with skeletal features, not too unlike the man sitting next to her, appeared. He wore a magnificent top hat and a hatbox hung from his hand. His eyes looked suspiciously around before he laughed sinisterly. His face suddenly vanished from his body and reappeared inside his hatbox.
Their carriage tilted backward away from the mansion and into the backyard cemetery. Christine laughed and clapped her hands in delight.
“What was so remarkable about him?” Erik puzzled.
“The rumor of the Hatbox Ghost is amazing! He was put into the Mansion on the opening days, but then he vanished!” “The animatronic… vanished?” “Yes! They never saw it again! They just put him back in a couple of years ago. But can you imagine? Almost fifty years without Hattie and his image is all through the mansion! But now he’s back and better than ever!” The recurring music suddenly shifted from melancholy and dour to exuberant and lively. A raven cawed at them during their descent out of the main house and into the graveyard. They passed the terrified groundskeeper and his dog, both trembling in fear as the ghosts and corpses rose from their graves to have a frightening soiree.
Christine bounced along to the music and sang along to the macabre choir,
“When the crypt doors creak and the tombstones quake,
Spooks come out for a swinging wake.
Happy haunts materialize and begin to vocalize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!
Now, don’t close your eyes and don’t try to hide,
For a silly spook may sit by your side.
Shrouded in a daft disguise, they pretend to terrorize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!
As the moon climbs high o’er the dead oak tree,
Spooks arrive for the midnight spree.
Creepy creeps with eerie eyes start to shriek and harmonize.
Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!
When you hear the knell of a requiem bell,
Weird glows gleam where spirits dwell.
Restless bones etherealize, rise as spooks of every size!
She cackled and continued right from the top again. Ghosts popped up from behind tombstones, a Mummy was having tea, four busts sang very expressively, and several opera singers belted out their tunes.
Erik nudged his elbow against Christine and nodded to a large woman’s ghost with long Valkyrie braids, projecting out her notes. “I wasn’t aware Carlotta was employed here!”
Christine sputtered in laughter as they left the graveyard only to be accosted by three hitchhiking ghosts, thumbing their way out.
“Ah, there you are!” The Ghost Host’s voice cooed, “and just in time… there’s a little matter I forgot to mention — beware of hitchhiking ghosts! They have selected you to fill our quota, and they’ll haunt you until you return! Now I will raise the safety bar, and a ghost will follow you home!”
Christine wiggled in her seat, eagerly peering in the mirrors displayed before them to see which ghost would select them. However, all that they saw were their own reflections, Erik doing everything he could to avoid looking at himself “That’s odd… it must be down… usually a ghost appears next to you…” She looked over at Erik, who shrugged in response.
“...nevermind, a ghost is next to me,” she commented dryly.
A lulling melody lured them out of their Doom Buggy as the bar lifted and they stepped out onto the moving platform. Christine looked back as her palm sought the handrail, carrying them back up to the world above. “Hurry baaaack… Hurry baaaack…” The small bride-like figure of Little Leota taunted them as they headed upward. Erik rested his hand on Christine’s shoulder. “Oh, we plan to.” Christine gasped in delight, her eyes sparkling with unmitigated joy. “Again?”
Erik nodded, “how else am I to construct a summer home?”

There are many resources included in the Jump Manual.  Here could be a temporary summary of each: one. Introduction This one is pretty self-explanatory.  The introduction provides a background on Jacob Hiller and how he came to develop the Jump Manual program. In outline, it states that Jacob has always been obsessed with obtaining a high vertical.  He had forever been in nice shape and could dunk before learning his techniques, but barely.  When discovering these techniques through experimentation, his vertical leaping ability exploded over the course of concerning 3 months. At the top of the three month period Jacob may dunk from outside the lane, and do 360 dunks, tomahawks, and different advanced dunks. 2. Essential Variables of Explosiveness Jacob Hiller discussing variables of explosiveness In this section Jacob breaks down what he considers the essential variables of explosiveness that cause maximum vertical jumping gains.  These include:     Strength     Quickness     Neurological Recruitment and Conditioning     Fuel     Stability and Balance     Form     Flexibility     Body Composition     Hereditary Factors three. The Science of Optimal Results Essentially Jacob Hiller discusses the difference between working out for muscle strength and muscle endurance.  Knowing the distinction between these two is very important as doing the wrong one will primarily mean you are wasting your time if your goal is to increase your vertical jump. 4. Laws of Vertical Jump Improvement In this section Jacob provides you with nine basic elementary “laws” to follow to assist you in your journey to improve your vertical jump.  I can offer 3 of the laws below to relinquish you a preview of what these are all concerning.     Strength X Quickness = Explosion     Train Explosion, Not Endurance     If you're pacing yourself, stop and restart 5. Eating for Maximum Gains The Jump Program emphasizes the importance of diet in maximizing vertical jumping gains This section goes into detail on how nutrition plays a key role in serving to you progress through the program.  A number of the knowledge is good, but I feel a number of the knowledge is outdated as it is now 10 years recent. At the end of the day all the data provided during this section will be obtained at no cost elsewhere. half dozen. “Optional” Equipment for Vertical Jump Drills During this section Jacob lists completely different items of kit that he suggests you've got to complete the vertical jumping exercises.  The equipment listed includes:     Speed rope     Medicine ball     Basketball     A weight space     A jump box While Jacob says these are optional, I would take into account these needed as nearly all the exercises utilize at least one of these pieces of apparatus.  If you're visiting pay the money on the program you may still invest within the equipment and do the program properly or not do it at all. seven. Jumper’s Forum The jumper’s forum permits users to ask questions and obtain feedback from other participants.  Unfortunately, I even have not been able to get the Jumper’s forum to load thus I’m not certain why it's down.  Either manner, the program works, however don’t expect to be ready to access this resource.  If this changes I’ll let you recognize. eight. Pre-Workout Stretches and Warm-Ups This section breaks down some basic stretches and warm ups to do before going into the actual Jump Manual workouts.  Basically, you'll do some light activity for 5-10 minutes such as jogging, and then transition into static stretching. Most of the stretches you may be familiar with, but there are some that I had not done before.  Overall, nothing really here, simply what you need to urge your body prepared for the workout. nine. Max-Explosion Workout Example of a Max-Explosion Exercise: “Leg Chair Rockets” The meat of the Jump Manual Program, the Max-Explosion Workout could be a fourteen day rotation of workouts and rest days that are done six times for a complete of twelve weeks. Exercises done in the max-explosion coaching program embody plyometric exercises and strength training movements using weights. Every exercise features a primary exercise with unweighted alternatives if you cannot do the primary movement or don't have the mandatory equipment. It is counseled that you check your vertical before each workout to check progress.  Jacob also strongly suggests that you take additional rest days until you're no longer sore as not doing thus will only slow your progress and waste your energy. 10. Post-Workout Jacob gives some recommendations for how to proceed when your workout.  The basics of this recommendation includes eating protein immediately once operating out, cooling down, and doing the same stretching routine as you did within the pre-workout routine. 11. Progress and Sustained Increase Once the 12-week program Jacob Hiller invitations you to contact him to urge additional specific recommendations on how to any your coaching so that you simply see even greater gains. twelve. Strengths of the Program There is a ton to love about the Jump Manual.  Here are some of the most noteworthy positives about the program. one. 12 Weeks in Length Having a vertical jumping program that is 12 weeks long provides more time to work out the gains from your work compared to different programs like Vert Shock. At around 3 months, there's little question that if you are doing the Jump Manual Program properly you may see huge gains in your vertical jumping ability and many of you will turn into dunkers. two. Mix of Plyometrics and Strength Coaching Weight coaching works and I like that it's a central part of the Jump Manual Program.  However not just any strength coaching, in the Jump Manual you learn to try and do explosive movements with weights that directly target the muscles concerned in the jumping motion. On prime of the strength coaching the Jump Manual additionally includes a healthy doses of plyometrics that are also essential to your success. Doing each in tandem offers you the best chance to gain the most number of inches to your vertical jump. three. PDF Trackers Included in the program are several PDF trackers that help you retain track of your progress as you're employed through the program.  I like this because it helps you know where you are at and you'll be able to see how so much you have got come.  Lastly, it helps you stay organized. four. First, the Instant Inches further shows you how to induce more inches out of your vertical merely by practicing correct jumping techniques. Second, the lean power protocol is a full diet together with 300 recipes.  It is essentially an intermittent fasting diet (one thing I already do on my on my very own, and highly suggest). Third, Beast Hoops is a strength coaching program designed to assist you get sturdy without messing up your shooting technique. Fourth, Jacob Hiller interviews Dave Hopla, an NBA shooting coach. Fifth, Jacob Hiller interviews Tim Gallwey on how to get and stay within the zone. Sixth, Jacob interviews Dr. Patrick Cohn about taking part in out of your mind. As you'll see there are a lot of extras included in the Jump Manual for free.  There are different extras, but they are doing cost a separate fee. What May Be Better There are some things we’d like to see modified or updated from the Jump Manual Program. one. Needs Weights The Jump Manual Requires Weights to Train The Jump Manual could be a high maintenance vertical jump program in terms of the equipment required.  To very complete this program properly you may need access to a weight area furthermore different varieties of gym equipment. Thankfully, Jacob Hiller will give some alternative exercises that may be done if you don’t have access to weights, but it's obvious that not being able to try to to the recommended weight bearing exercises is a disadvantage and could negatively impact your results. two. Disorganized The Jump Manual originally came out concerning ten years ago and over that time it's apparent that Jacob Hiller has added a lot of information to make the program better.  However, he has done a poor job at trimming outdated and recent info which has made the program a bit bloated and disorganized. Due to this the program is a bit disorganized and laborious to follow.  Be positive to utilize the downloadable PDFs that include the program to help you keep on target. three. Videos Are Old I’m shocked that Jacob has not taken the time to update some of the videos in his program.  While most of it's still relevant nowadays it simply looks dated.  We tend to’ve come back a protracted way in ten years and several of the videos in the Jump Manual Program seem to possess been recorded on a flip phone in between games of snake. They work, but they simply do not look skilled and feel a bit lackluster when you think about the value of the program. 4. Not For The Injury Prone If you've got a history of knee injuries or surgeries, then I’d be hesitant to take on this program. Many of the explosive weight training includes jumping with important weight that not only requires perfect type however a healthy body.  Don’t overdue it and be honest with yourself about what your body is capable of doing.  If this can be too much then contemplate the plyometric primarily based Vert Shock program. Final Thoughts The Jump Manual is that the O.G. of vertical jump training programs and for smart reason.  It is doesn’t play around and needs a heavy level of commitment, however delivers results to people who are in a position to form it through a powerful 12 weeks of coaching. Before shopping for I highly advocate you make certain you've got access to any or all the desired equipment I mentioned during this review and a weight space at the native gym. If you are in good shape now and don't have a history of injury then the Jump Manual can probably give you maximum results thanks to the utilization of weights and also the 12 week program length.  For those who do have a history of injury or are simply getting into the swing of things I would recommend Vert Shock as it is a shorter program and does not need weight training while still getting sensible results. At the end of the day, the program that is best for you will return all the way down to your personal history and vertical jump coaching goals.

Before buying I highly advocate you create certain you've got access to all or any the required equipment I mentioned in this review and a weight room at the local gym. If you're in smart form now and do not have a history of injury then the Jump Manual can probably provide you most results thanks to the use of weights and therefore the 12 week program length.  For people who do have a history of injury or are just obtaining into the swing of things I would suggest Vert Shock as it's a shorter program and does not need weight training whereas still obtaining sensible results. At the tip of the day, the program that's best for you'll return down to your personal history and vertical jump training goals.

Jumper’s Forum The jumper’s forum allows users to ask queries and find feedback from other participants.  Unfortunately, I actually have not been able to get the Jumper’s forum to load thus I’m not sure why it is down.  Either method, the program works, but don’t expect to be ready to access this resource.  If this changes I’ll let you know. 8. Pre-Workout Stretches and Heat-Ups This section breaks down some basic stretches and warm ups to try and do before going into the actual Jump Manual workouts.  Primarily, you may do some light-weight activity for five-ten minutes such as jogging, and then transition into static stretching. Every exercise features a primary exercise with unweighted alternatives if you cannot do the first movement or do not have the necessary equipment. It is recommended that you just check your vertical before each workout to test progress.  Jacob additionally strongly suggests that you're taking extra rest days until you're now not sore as not doing thus will only slow your progress and waste your energy. 10. Post-Workout Jacob offers some recommendations for a way to proceed when your workout.  The basics of this advice includes eating protein immediately when working out, cooling down, and doing the identical stretching routine as you probably did within the pre-workout routine. 11. Mix of Plyometrics and Strength Training Weight coaching works and I like that it's a central part of the Jump Manual Program.  However not simply any strength training, in the Jump Manual you learn to try to to explosive movements with weights that directly target the muscles concerned in the jumping motion. On high of the strength training the Jump Manual also includes a healthy doses of plyometrics which are also essential to your success. They work, however they simply do not look professional and feel a touch lackluster when you concentrate on the value of the program. 4. Needs Weights The Jump Manual Requires Weights to Train The Jump Manual is a high maintenance vertical jump program in terms of the equipment required.  To very complete this program properly you will need access to a weight room furthermore different types of gym equipment. Thankfully, Jacob Hiller does provide some different exercises that may be done if you don’t have access to weights, but it is obvious that not having the ability to try to to the counseled weight bearing exercises is a disadvantage and may negatively impact your results. two. They work, but they simply do not look skilled and feel a touch lackluster when you consider the worth of the program. 4. Not For The Injury Prone If you have a history of knee injuries or surgeries, then I’d be hesitant to require on this program. Many of the explosive weight training includes jumping with vital weight which not solely requires excellent kind however a healthy body.  Don’t overdue it and be honest with yourself regarding what your body is capable of doing.  If this is too much then take into account the plyometric primarily based Vert Shock program. Final Thoughts The Jump Manual is the O.G. of vertical jump coaching programs and for sensible reason.  It's doesn’t mess around and requires a heavy level of commitment, but delivers results to those that are able to make it through a powerful 12 weeks of training. At the tip of the day, the program that's best for you may come all the way down to your personal history and vertical jump coaching goals.

Mix of Plyometrics and Strength Coaching Weight training works and I like that it is a central half of the Jump Manual Program.  But not simply any strength coaching, within the Jump Manual you learn to try to to explosive movements with weights that directly target the muscles concerned in the jumping motion. On top of the strength coaching the Jump Manual conjointly includes a healthy doses of plyometrics which are also essential to your success. Doing both in tandem provides you the simplest opportunity to achieve the most variety of inches to your vertical jump. 3. PDF Trackers Included within the program are many PDF trackers that facilitate you keep track of your progress as you work through the program.  I like this as a result of it helps you know where you are at and you'll be able to see how so much you have got return.  Lastly, it helps you stay organized. 4. Alternative Resources There are many further resources included within the Jump Manual Program that are included as half of the regular purchase price. 1st, the Instant Inches additional shows you the way to induce additional inches out of your vertical merely by practicing correct jumping techniques. Second, the lean power protocol may be a full diet including three hundred recipes.  It's primarily an intermittent fasting diet (something I already do on my on my very own, and highly advocate). Third, Beast Hoops is a strength coaching program designed to help you get sturdy while not messing up your shooting technique. Fourth, Jacob Hiller interviews Dave Hopla, an NBA shooting coach. Fifth, Jacob Hiller interviews Tim Gallwey on how to urge and keep within the zone. Sixth, Jacob interviews Dr. Patrick Cohn about enjoying out of your mind. As you'll see there are several extras included in the Jump Manual free.  There are alternative extras, but they do price a separate fee. What Could Be Higher There are a few things we tend to’d like to see modified or updated from the Jump Manual Program. one. Requires Weights The Jump Manual Requires Weights to Train The Jump Manual may be a high maintenance vertical jump program in terms of the equipment required.  To really complete this program properly you'll need access to a weight area furthermore different varieties of gym equipment. Thankfully, Jacob Hiller will offer some various exercises that can be done if you don’t have access to weights, however it is obvious that not being able to do the counseled weight bearing exercises may be a disadvantage and might negatively impact your results. a pair of. Disorganized The Jump Manual originally came out concerning ten years ago and over that point it's apparent that Jacob Hiller has added more info to form the program higher.  However, he has done a poor job at trimming outdated and previous information that has created the program a small amount bloated and disorganized. Due to the current the program could be a bit disorganized and hard to follow.  Be sure to utilize the downloadable PDFs that come with the program to help you stay on track. 3. Videos Are Old I’m stunned that Jacob has not taken the time to update a number of the videos in his program.  While most of it is still relevant nowadays it simply looks dated.  We have a tendency to’ve return a protracted means in ten years and several of the videos in the Jump Manual Program seem to possess been recorded on a flip phone in between games of snake. They work, however they simply don't look professional and feel a bit lackluster when you think about the worth of the program. 4. Not For The Injury Prone If you've got a history of knee injuries or surgeries, then I’d be hesitant to take on this program. Many of the explosive weight training includes jumping with vital weight which not solely needs good kind but a healthy body.  Don’t overdue it and be honest with yourself concerning what your body is capable of doing.  If this can be too much then think about the plyometric based mostly Vert Shock program. Final Thoughts The Jump Manual is the O.G. of vertical jump training programs and for smart reason.  It's doesn’t play around and needs a heavy level of commitment, but delivers results to people who are ready to form it through a powerful 12 weeks of coaching. Before shopping for I highly recommend you create positive you have got access to any or all the specified equipment I mentioned during this review and a weight area at the native gym. If you are in sensible form currently and do not have a history of injury then the Jump Manual will most likely give you most results thanks to the employment of weights and the 12 week program length.  For those that do have a history of injury or are simply obtaining into the swing of things I would recommend Vert Shock as it is a shorter program and does not need weight coaching whereas still obtaining sensible results. At the end of the day, the program that is best for you'll come back right down to your personal history and vertical jump training goals.

Peace Rally
Saturday, I attended my first peace rally. It was held by an organization called Fighting Injustice Together in an effort to raise awareness of the confederate monument located in front of a cemetery in downtown Greenville. I didn’t know much about the group, or the monument, but my friend asked if I would go with her, and fifteen minutes later we were writing “Love Your Neighbor” on poster boards and walking to the cemetery from the Publix parking lot. When we arrived, it was clear two opposing parties were at the site, and a police officer promptly asked me which side I was on. I said “ the peaceful side”, to which he replied, “both are peaceful, ma’am”. It was already obvious how uneducated I was in this matter, so I dejectedly replied, “the side to move the statue”. He directed me to the group of people who were not in front of the statue, but across the street from it. I thought that was a little strange, but when I looked at the other crowd, I understood. A group of confederate protesters had camped out the night before in front of the monument, in an attempt to disrupt and distract the rally. Due to the large number of violent threats FIT had received, the police did not want the two groups in the same vicinity, so they directed the rally to the other side of the street. Due to some sort of city ordinance, after four hours the police would rotate each group to the opposite side, giving the rally group a chance to be in front of the monument and conduct their gathering as intended. So, we show up, join the crowd across the street from the monument, and try to figure out our place in this vague, more-than-slightly uncomfortable situation. The group is chanting, “Who lost the war?” “You did!” and “Who’s gonna lose this one?” “You are!”. That felt weird, because I thought this was a peace rally to bring awareness to a monument needing to be moved, not to reiterate who won the war. After a few minutes of timidly holding our signs just at chest-level while those around us were chanting, someone took the megaphone and explained that we were soon going to be walking across the street to conduct the rally at the base of the monument. This was when I learned of the city ordinance that allowed the other party to be where they were for four hours, but then required them to move so we could have our turn. This law enforced game of musical chairs was to take place at 2:30PM, but at 2:25PM, a new chant began: “Greenville Police, do your job!”. Now, to be fair, only a few people engaged in this chant, as it was very clear that the Greenville Police were in fact doing their job, and doing it very well. Regardless of how loud it was, it was still uncomfortable to once again be in the midst of a group of people chanting words I didn’t fully agree with. The protesters – confederate flags and all - had officially moved to the street, which had been blocked off, and we crossed and congregated at the base of the monument. It was at this point that I began to see just how messy these types of things are. The FIT founder took the megaphone and explained the purpose of the event. He then explained that other groups were also represented at the rally, which may or may not have the same reasons for being there. He allowed those groups to speak, and it was clear some were there to demand the statue be completely removed, destroyed, and a monument to the confederate victims be erected in its place, while FIT was there to demand the statue be removed from the public downtown area and moved to the privately owned confederate museum in Greenville. These were two very different motivations - one to demolish the monument completely, and one to relocate it to private property where taxpayer dollars are not being spent to maintain this piece of controversial history. While people on the same side were there for different reasons, the other messy part about all of this was the protesting taking place across the street. That was already made clear by the fact that the rally group had to wait four hours to stand in the place they originally wanted while the protestors chanted and insulted them from that spot until they had to move, but when the rally finally started, the protestors continued to chant and yell at the rally goers in an attempt to distract the crowd – and it was working really well on a few people. The FIT founder kept trying to bring everyone back to the point of the rally, which was not to engage in a shouting match with the protestors, but they were relentless. Hearing their words and hearing some of the rally members respond to them was the most uncomfortable part of the experience. I heard coarse, bigoted, arrogant, and hateful language coming from the protestors. Unfortunately, I heard some pretty hateful words in response from the rally end too. The protesters also had big trucks with confederate flags and passengers with extended middle fingers hanging out of the windows riding up and down the street that divided the two groups. It was hateful and ignorant, and I could feel my blood boiling at the injustice of it all. It was in the uncomfortable moment of hearing such horrible words and phrases being yelled at an entire group of people trying to do something peaceful and informative that I realized how difficult it is to stand up for what you believe is right, in public. I am not justifying violence or hatred in any way, but I cannot imagine the amount of restraint and focus people who are being attacked while trying to stand up for what they believe is right must exercise. I know people do it, I just think it is very difficult. Hearing what the confederate protesters were yelling at the rally goers, it made sense to me that people get, loud, emotional, even violent. It also made sense why the police had separated the two groups. Again, this is not condoning or excusing violence and hatred. If anything, this is emphasizing how respectable and incredible the peaceful and loving are in the face of their enemies. Peace and love are truly the more difficult qualities to portray in these moments. I was at this thing on a whim, not extremely invested, and even I felt offended, disgusted, and angry at the words being shouted at me. After a few more people spoke, FIT started calling random people from the crowd to speak into the megaphone why they were there. I was one of those randomly selected, and forced, people. Once again I felt extremely uncomfortable, but I leaned into the moment, pressed the TALK button, and said, “I’m here because my friend invited me, and I’m glad I came. I believe all life has value, regardless of skin color, and I don’t believe this monument honors that.” I have no idea if what I said made sense, if it was inspiring, or if it was the politically correct thing to do, but people clapped and I’m taking that as a success. We stayed for a bit longer, than decided to leave since the people with the megaphone at this point truly were random rally attenders, not any organization’s designated speakers. Walking away, my friend and I immediately started talking about all that we just experienced. It was frustrating, convoluted, inspiring, discouraging, encouraging, and very uncomfortable. After talking for a while, my friend said something that stayed in my mind. She said, “These types of things leave you with two choices – to either not get involved at all, or to get involved and be willing to risk being misunderstood because of the nuanced types of people and beliefs around you.” As soon as she said those words, I realized exactly why the entire experience was so uncomfortable (other than the blatant hate from the protesters) – I was scared to be misunderstood. I didn’t want to be mistaken as angry, anti-government, blindly progressive, hatefully close-minded, uneducated, or even passive (by not saying anything to those protestors). I was afraid of being mixed up in the nuance of humanity, and that should never be a reason for abandoning my own. I have a word for myself for the entire year, and this year it is BRAVE. Going to the peace rally was a brave thing for me to do. Accepting the risk of being misunderstood for a cause greater than my comfort was brave for me. Even writing this post about something that could be misconstrued into a million incorrect interpretations is a brave step for me. I want to go to more peace rallies. I want to see that monument moved so my tax dollars are not being used for its preservation. But more than the monument being moved, I want to stop the bigotry, ignorance, and blind hatred that I saw at that rally. The fate of a symbol should never justify hating and devaluing a fellow human being. No disagreement should make excuse for bigotry and ignorance. We are not to be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good. Evil isn’t brave, it’s cowardly. Goodness is brave. Love is brave. Peace is brave. And being brave is what I intend to do.
