Shauna and Jackie’s cannibalistic dynamic is exceptionally special because rarely do you see female characters using the “eating each other as a form of our love” trope. The cannibalism metaphor is oftentimes implemented to replace the gentleness and kindness 2 characters lack in the relationship, and you mostly see this with 2 male characters (or female and male). This makes sense, because kind and soft dynamics aren’t something you would see frequently—especially in mainstream media—between men as they might not know how to express these types of feelings. Meanwhile, straight relationships don’t have that same connection that 2 girls would have because there is a lack of relatability the two would bond over. The fact that it’s between 2 women makes it even harsher. Female friendships are already viewed and displayed as the most tender relationship you can have, platonic or romantic, and so to put the cannibalism metaphor between Shauna and Jackie (two girls who are supposed to be long-term best friends going off to college together to become roommates and sequentially live the rest of their lives intertwined with one another) makes them such a devastating and gut-wrenching pair to place the cannibalism symbolism onto.
