one of the fruits of once again having a job that involves a lot of slow periods in proximity to a computer is that i have had some time to click around on g*ogle scholar, which has revealed to me (to my deep embarrassment) that there is an open-access edited book about medieval coinage & currency put together by r. naismith (more or less the guy for early english coinage) that came out in 2018 (!!!), which was sort of my blank year for paying attention to this stuff. anyway if anyone else is interested in medieval currency & coinage, check it outtttt (& then talk to me!)
#medieval money & the oncoming storm#if u are like 'kestrel girderednerve that sounds so fucking boring' OR like 'kestrel girderednerve u are a fake fan of medieval money'#i accept both of these criticisms with equanimity. medieval money is actually rivetingly interesting if u are trying to figure out Why Mone#there is a bunch of fascinating social change that is tied up the production distribution & exchange of coinage#money is technology no less than books or rockets or whatever right it's worth considering directly plus numismatic evidence#can be surprisingly rich! actually! although connecing dry studies to vivid histories can be a challenge i grant. the book is about that :)#as to the other i have no defense. i am a fake fan at all times. in RE 2018 tho i finished my terrible undergrad thesis on money that year#so i was like. not doing extra research for a bit there#all kinds of weird stuff going on with early finance; some of it relies on access to coinage some of it was a response to currency shortage
