11. A memory that may or may not have happened

it was a split second decision she had made in the moment. an enemy turned willing ally just seconds before— accosted by the enemies that they previously called their friends. “go, now!” she calls out to her new ally, forcing them to unite with marth’s army without her. it would be faster to carry them on her pegasus but a novice to pegasus riding would not be able to hold onto her in this turbulence. she would risk a falling death of her new ally with that route. her only option, then, is to distract. she will fare this onslaught better than them. the wing spear slams against the blade of an enemy before she takes to the skies again. the attention is on her, good—

she does not see the archer hiding away from her in plain sight. she does not see the tug of the bowstring as an arrow is pointed her way. she does not see its release.

“CAEDA—!!!” the princess of talys hears the voice of her beloved as her head turns, her hair whipping in the wind as she does so. an arrow pierces her leg, and then another pierces the wings of her pegasus. her pegasus cries out in shock, the arrow in her leg preventing her from holding onto the saddle with her legs as her mount bucks her off his saddle and struggles to keep flying. she grips the rein of her trusted companion with one hand as she dangles dangerously off her still struggling pegasus, but the long battle before them had sapped much of her strength. her grip fails her and she unwillingly lets go of her last lifeline.

she catches his gaze as she falls from her pegasus. the terrified expression on his face as if he was only just realizing what was happening as he hurried to her side with a painfully desperate wish to save her.

tears momentarily fill her eyes for the last moment of her life that she spends still conscious and breathing.

the most regrettable part for caeda was not that she knew this was the moment her life would end, but that she knew this was the moment she would be separated forever from marth until they were to reunite in death. she remembers the request that she had made of kris. that he must protect the hero-king when she cannot be there for him.

do not be sad, my love. she wants to tell him. you are not alone without me. she wants to tell him. there are still those who love you alive in this world. she wants to tell him.

her lips open to speak—

her body lands on the unstable ground with a sickening crunch, her life snuffed out the instant her body had slammed against the ground. the last sight of the beloved princess of talys for the hero-king and his loyal shadow is a bloodied and broken body... taken from him by war and the selfless personality he had always loved of her.

Do you have female characters that you like or find good in FE.

For sure, I have females I like! They tend not to be my favorites in FE (or in a lot of media in general because females often don't get written with the same complexity as males not everything can be Talentless Nana), but I don't have an empty void where females in FE are concerned thankfully.

And since you asked for FE in general, I'm just gonna go for it and list who I like or find good (two different lists because they might be good characters but just not my personal preference of character).

If I didn't list someone here it doesn't mean they're a terrible character or that I despise them or anything (they're not even necessarily bad imo), but a lot of them are pretty shallow or used like a plot gimmick. ALSO, I might like them but that doesn't mean that they were written particularly well or felt standout or anything (like, I like Cordelia but I didn't list her because it's not a very strong attachment and it's a very mild like).

In some cases for "good" that aren't in like, it's more because they're not a favorite female (like Timerra, who I like enough but I had other females I enjoyed more).

edit: if you're wondering why i didn't list sov it's bc i haven't played it and gaiden's version of the characters is about as nonexistent as fe5, hence the lack of fe2 and fe5 (who weren't present in fe4 as well) characters

So I’m finally done crawling through Fire Emblem Engage. To be fair, my Collector’s Edition arrived like a week late and I played too many skirmishes. Spoilers ahead for both Engage and Mystery of the Emblem. Alear gonna be referred to as she because I played as Toothpaste-chan. TL;DR, despite it having some weaknesses, mostly in writing, I ended up really having a lot of fun.

I’ll get my Negative Nancying out of the way. Still don’t like Alear looking like toothpaste and I wish that she just had blue hair once she came back as an emblem. Plot was predictable and villains weren’t too strong of characters. It really bothered me that Marth only mentions his own wife like once, and just in passing. Like if he’s known as a king and not a prince, he’s at minimum engaged (lol) to Caeda? Bitch, you’re over here buttering up a can of Pepsi with all the romantic undertones when you’re a taken man? And I know you’re not in an open marriage otherwise Ogma wouldn’t have fucked off at the end of everything. Sorry, Caeda is my favorite character so I’m a little salty.

Other nitpicks: I feel like, if you want to donate and forge weapons, you really don’t get enough money. Really dislike Clanne, Franne, and Jean. Just 0/10 obnoxious children. I wish we had almost any other character besides Camilla in the DLC. She’s given me the ick since Fates and nothing has changed since. Byleth shouldn’t have had goddess dance and we should have gotten Azura instead. That’s just my opinion though.

That being said, I genuinely did end up really enjoying myself. I think I like Three Houses just a bit more, but still very good. The engage mechanic ended up being pretty fun to use. Aside from the three listed above, I liked the units we got. Also, can we talk about how gay this game is? There are no heterosexual explanations some of these characters. The fact that you can marry anyone of any gender no matter which Alear you choose is amazing. Also, Rosado. We have come so far since Fates, my fellow weebs. The difference between Forrest and Rosado is night and day.

I thought the voice acting was really good overall. A lot of the support conversations were fun, and I think the localization team did a good job. I know some people are cranky because the Japanese version has a lot of differences, but tbh I’m more than okay with the changes. Maps were okay, but I might just be a little meh about them because I played some of them dozens of times.

Well, time to replay my other Fire Emblem games until I get distracted by something else.

"Prove your might" is all he needed to hear to get him hooked. I'm imagining that he's not succeeding here, but he is going to try again, and again, and again, until he figures out what kind of trick is being used to embarrass him like this! (Because he's plenty strong, so obviously there must be some kind of trick!!) He could use somebody who is willing to help him crack this thing, or maybe try to drag him elsewhere before his arms turn to jelly.

Python is...not very taken with this folktale. He's a skeptic in general when it comes to fanciful tales of true love, and he's quite opinionated when it comes to class-based barriers. I'm thinking more of this being a conversation about the story attached to the dying plant than tending to the plant itself, though it can certainly happen around that task. Python is also here to be a bit of a party pooper, and while he isn't totally rigid in his opinions (namely, that it's a load of horse plop that this story has had any hand in safeguarding forbidden lovers, that letting the life of a flower influence your hopes for romance is silly, etc), he is going to be pretty blunt about those thoughts.
