solána: i've been really getting into soccer for the last few years, or sorry, football! and i watched a couple England games and was curious why you left them, if that's not too personal of a question? because you did such an amazing job! was it just time to move on? solána: and because i'm curious, did you have a favorite player on the england team? i know you couldn't say then because you can't play favorites, but now that you're not the manager anymore, you can say if you had a favorite, right? @garethsouthgate-hf

You got super lucky! Not that it's ever lucky to get a cold, but at least you didn't have to find some crazy way to communicate without a voice. How are you feeling now? Better, hopefully. Man flu is the funniest thing, and I hate to break it to you, but it does have a lot of truth to it. It's weird to think about though. Did your kids at least try to keep up the conversation on their end so that you didn't have to use your voice? I'm really good! I'm super lucky and happy and just all around full of those cheesy feelings.
Tumblr media
I am so glad that the England camp and games happened when they did. I went from being able to doing interviews on the day of the most recent match to getting a cold (no...its not man flu, as some may call it. I don't end up in bed when all I have is a cold) to now not even having a voice. Not sure how I would have been able to do my job if I couldn't even talk to my players. I know there are some people (media, I am looking at you) who would be happy about that. It was quite the task trying to talk to my son and daughter on Facetime. Anyway...how are you doing?

Jude Bellingham recognises England have some "negatives to shake off" but believes there is more to focus on and there is more to come after Gareth Southgate's side beat Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener on Sunday.Runners-up three years ago and one of the favourites to win in Germany, they began their challenge for glory this summer and got off to a strong start in Gelsenkirchen. A powerful header from Bellingham gave England the upper hand early on, but Serbia came on the offensive after the break and Southgate's side earned a sweaty 1-0 victory. The result puts them at the top of Group C and Sunday's man of the match showed in the first half why they can win the Euros, dismissing any notion that they might fall just short in the second half. "No, not really. I don't agree with that," Bellingham said. "I think the first half showed why we can score goals against any team and I think the second half showed why we can keep a clean sheet against any team." "I think across the team, obviously there's going to be negative themes in every game, and rightly so at times. But in this game, I think we can take some positives from the fact that, although we held on at times and struggled a little bit, we were able to keep a clean sheet." For a more accessible video player, use Chrome browser Lee Hendry analyses Gareth Southgate's England's performance as they beat Serbia 1-0 in their opening match of Euro 2024 "If we keep a clean sheet we only need to score one goal to win the game - three points. This team is still new and I think it's coming together game by game." "So, yeah, I think we can be happy in the locker room. Of course, there are some negativity we want to erase, but overall we're happy with that performance." It's not a role he has played much in the past, but he showed moments of great discipline and great passing range. We have been learning with him in this role and he showed some of the attributes we want. Whoever we put there, we will be putting young players there or inexperienced players there. It was great to see him rise to the challenge. England manager Gareth Southgate on Trent Alexander-Arnold "I feel like I can influence the game and decide the game." For a more accessible video player, use Chrome browser Watch Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold celebrate their goal against Serbia with us! Bellingham starred as England won their opening match for the fourth consecutive tournament, showing strength, skill and confidence against physical opposition.Asked why the 20-year-old appears unfazed as he tries to lead the Euro 2020 runners-up to greater heights, he replied: "I'm just enjoying my football.""I just take each match as it comes, without thinking too much ahead. In every match I feel like I can make an impact and decide the game." For a more accessible video player, use Chrome browser England fans celebrated across the country after Jude Bellingham scored a goal in the opening match of Euro 2024 against Serbia. “But it’s not something that looks too far into the future, it’s something that happens every game.
"The truth is, I really love playing football, so when I step on the court, I play without fear because I love playing football.""For me it's a release and it's my favorite thing in the world, so when I play it doesn't feel like work, it feels like joy."Southgate: Bellingham 'wrote the script' to lead England to opening win For a more accessible video player, use Chrome browser Lee Hendry described Jude Bellingham's performance in England's win over Serbia as "superb". Southgate said star midfielder Bellingham was "writing the script himself" after helping England win the opening game of the tournament."This team is still coming together," Southgate said. "Everyone will be expecting us to go through comfortably but we have a tough job ahead of us." image: Jude Bellingham starred in England's 1-0 win over Serbia at Euro 2024. “We are short on some things and are trying to figure out the best solution."We've been faced with some very complicated circumstances in all of this, but the team spirit was clear for everyone tonight and we'll definitely grow from there." "Jude is an incredible player. He deserves all the praise. The confidence he plays with and the way he influences the game is incredible. For a player in his position it's important to get goals and assists and he's done that brilliantly." England captain Harry Kane talks about Bellingham Bellingham embodies the mentality and skill that England will need to progress in the tournament and Southgate was full of praise for his contribution to the match-winning effort."He writes his own script," he told the BBC. "The timing of his runs, the way he built the play, it was brilliant. I thought all our forwards were really good." image: Jude Bellingham erupts in celebration after England score the opening goal against Serbia. "We're confident we can score goals. It's not easy to create chances against an opponent with a back five, but we did it.""It was good that we had to struggle without the ball because that's what we've been focusing on in practice this week and we were obviously a lot better in that regard than we were last week." Bellingham and Southgate excel in midfield experiment Bellingham played in a midfield three against Serbia on Sunday, alongside Declan Rice and Alexander-Arnold, who was converted from right-back. Whether that's the right balance will be debated ahead of Thursday's game against Denmark, but Bellingham sees potential in the Liverpool player and quality in the Arsenal midfielder. "It was very good," Bellingham said. "I thought our balance was great with the ball and without it, and I thought Trent was particularly good with the ball." "He controls the game so well. He's so calm with the ball. I don't think there's anyone who can match him in terms of skill and quality on the ball." “He’s always positive and that really helps for someone like me who wants to win the ball all over the pitch and attack the opposition backline. "So I'm looking forward to playing more with him and seeing how we both develop and get used to playing with each other and see how much of our potential we can reach." "And of course, as always, Dec was fantastic. I think he's one of the best players in the world at his position. He's a fun guy." Southgate was also pleased with how the Alexander-Arnold experiment was working and praised the Liverpool star's performance.
"I was really pleased," he said. "Obviously, Jude has an important role to play, but he gets forward a lot and Trent has had to cover a lot of space, which is not a role he has played very often." “I thought he showed great discipline, he showed great passing range and a shot on goal. "We're obviously learning from him in this role, but I think he's shown some of the attributes he can bring. "Anything you do there you're going to be up against younger guys and less experienced guys so it's great that he rose to that challenge." "England need to find a way to turn things around." For a more accessible video player, use Chrome browser Paul Merson admitted he was "bored" by much of England's performance in their Euro 2024 opening match against Serbia. Sky Sports' Paul Merson:"What we saw has been the norm for the last few years."England started well. They had a great first 15 minutes or so. They were patient, they passed well, they moved well. They made a lot of good plays.""Then they scored a goal and then they got bored. They got bored of having the ball. We lost the ball, we gave it away too easily and allowed Serbia to take the lead at the end of the first half." image: Harry Kane fends off a challenge from Nikola Milenkovic "England were lucky to get to half-time but never got going again. Towards the end of the game it looked like players were hiding. Nobody on the pitch wanted the ball like Bellingham did.""We never seem to know how to change things during a game. We start the game well, then everything slows down and we're not playing as well. But you can never go from not good to good again and just stay at that level for the rest of the game.""We have to learn and find a way to change things, but this is a good result. There is still a lot to work on, but with three points and another game drawn we are in control of the group.""There's probably been a morale hit or two for the fans, including me. It's not going to be as easy for England as I thought it would be."Analysis: Common England concerns emerge image: Phil Foden had a difficult night against Serbia Sky Sports' Peter Smith:"England fans have seen this game before. After a fast start, the team loses control and Southgate holds back on substitutions. Against Serbia, and in many previous games, England have found ways to win, but that has hardly translated into tournament glory.""England went from a convincing to an uneasy match in the opener, looking menacing and dominant for the first 30 minutes before panicking by the end as Serbia gained momentum.""Much has been said about England's attacking prowess in this team but they once again dropped back and hung in there until the end, hardly the hallmark of the European champions-in-waiting.""But we have the three points, we're almost certain to qualify for the knockout stages and we have the time for 90 minutes to find a way to capitalise on our early momentum. But the approach has to come from above and Southgate needs to set the tone."Key dates for England image: Kane endured a frustrating night against Serbia All times BSTThursday, June 20 - Denmark v England, Frankfurt, kick-off 5pmTuesday, June 25 - England v Slovenia, kick-off 8pm

"The Lions' Roar"

when European football legacy will be decided...
It's when the undefeated England Lions
outplay the Spanish bulls, and be defeated.
Without needing to predict a score
the Lions have rediscovered new power to their raw
They now have "the bit between their teeth"
winning is their mantra, no losing nor possibility of a draw.
England's team will play their hearts out
In search of a sweet and deserved victory
A passion only recently rediscovered against the Dutch
who were outplayed comprehensively.
Not since 1966 have the Lions looked so worthy
of this the much coveted Euro's prize
Such a talented and well-drilled team it's predicted
though underdogs are about to spring the big surprise.
The Spanish players might consider themselves "favourites"
but It's such an naive mistake they'll me making
Our national team, under Gareth Southgate
see the chance their supporters expect them to be taking.
The optimistic chorus of " Football's coming home"
will be what Sunday's cup-final is all about

I know the names of more than one, but I could not pick them out of a line up, unfortunately. I'm pretty sure that makes me slightly less cool as an uncle, but I've got a plushie on order for her birthday that I'm hoping will make up for it, at least. I've gotten a few, including an arcade and a bowling alley, but I figure I've probably got a few weeks before I can coax any of them into visiting, at least.
I can actually only name one Pokemon. And that is the obvious one. Don't worry. I am not going to be asking you about it though. You could tell me anything and I would probably believe that when it comes to Pokemon anyway. I wish I could give you some suggestions.

Gareth Southgate Responds to Fan Criticism Amid Euro 2024 Struggles
Tumblr media
Gareth Southgate addressed the intense criticism of the England team at Euro 2024, particularly after fans reacted angrily to another lackluster performance. Despite this, England secured their spot in the last-16 as winners of Group C, though they risked a potential matchup against Germany had Denmark beaten Serbia. England will now face one of the best third-placed teams on Sunday, likely the Netherlands, avoiding early clashes with heavyweights like Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal. This should ideally boost hopes for a deep tournament run. However, concerns about England’s struggling attack and midfield persist, although Kobbie Mainoo's introduction at halftime to replace Conor Gallagher did provide some relief. Southgate, along with Harry Kane and Declan Rice, had already faced criticism ahead of the Slovenia match. Post-game, Southgate had to defend his team once more after receiving an angry response from some fans while he went to applaud them. Кирилл Венедиктов, CC BY-SA 3.0 GFDL, via Wikimedia Commons "I understand the frustration," Southgate said. "The most important thing is for the supporters to stay with the team. Criticism towards me is better than towards the players, but it creates an unusual environment. I've not seen any other team qualify and receive similar treatment. I'm very proud of how the players are handling it." When asked why the atmosphere feels different compared to previous tournaments, Southgate attributed it to heightened expectations. "We’ve made England fun again and it’s been very enjoyable for the players. We’ve got to ensure it stays that way." England's performance at Euro 2024 has been frustrating, with three uninspiring matches so far. A disallowed first-half goal due to Phil Foden being offside in the buildup to Bukayo Saka's tap-in highlighted their struggles to meet pre-tournament expectations. However, there were some positive signs, particularly in their pressing out of possession, which Southgate emphasized. "We were much improved with the ball," he noted. "We created good openings, but it's been hard work for us – we're not getting that break in front of goal. The substitutes made a significant impact, and we kept a clean sheet, which allowed us to win the group. I understand some reactions, but it’s a strange environment we're playing in." Southgate dismissed the notion that England has an easier path in the tournament, warning against complacency. He remains optimistic, especially with positive performances from substitutes like Mainoo and Cole Palmer, and believes the team is starting to come together. “We had a lot of issues coming into the tournament, but players like Marc Guehi and the defense have been huge positives. We looked more dangerous today and had a good impact from our subs. Now we need to convert those chances,” Southgate concluded. Read the full article

Analyzing England's High-Profile Omissions for FIFA World Cup 2026
The exclusion of high-profile players such as James Maddison, Jack Grealish, and the injured Harry Maguire has been one of the most talked-about aspects of Southgate’s squad announcement. James Maddison, who has been in impressive form for Leicester City, was expected by many to be a key player for England. However, Southgate’s decision to leave him out suggests a preference for players who can offer more versatility and fit into his tactical plans more seamlessly.

Jack Grealish, known for his creativity and flair, is another surprising omission. Despite his performances for Manchester City, Southgate has opted for a different set of attacking players. Perhaps indicating a shift towards a more dynamic and versatile forward line. Grealish’s exclusion highlights the fierce competition for places in England’s attacking setup. Where players like Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, and Eberechi Eze have emerged as key figures.
Harry Maguire’s injury has ruled him out of the squad. But his absence also reflects the changing dynamics of England’s defence. With the inclusion of younger defenders like Adam Wharton and established players like Joe Gomez and Lewis Dunk. Southgate appears to be building a backline that combines experience with youthful energy.
The exclusion of Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, and Ben Chilwell from the training squad further underscores Southgate’s bold approach. Rashford’s inconsistent form, Henderson’s move to a less competitive league, and Chilwell’s injury issues have all contributed to their omission. These decisions, while controversial, highlight Southgate’s commitment to selecting players based on current form and fitness.
Gareth Southgate's Vision and Team Dynamics for FIFA World Cup 2026
Gareth Southgate’s tactical vision for the 2026 World Cup focuses on creating a cohesive and adaptable team. His emphasis on squad depth and versatility is evident in his selection choices. Aiming to build a team capable of responding to various tactical challenges. Southgate’s approach involves blending experienced campaigners with fresh talent, ensuring a balanced squad ready for any scenario.
The inclusion of players like Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, and Ivan Toney highlights Southgate’s focus. On maintaining a solid defensive foundation while having the flexibility to switch tactics when needed. Dunk and Gomez bring experience and composure to the backline. While Toney’s physical presence and goal-scoring ability add a different dimension to the attack.
The competition for places within the squad has been created. A healthy environment where players push each other to perform at their best. This internal competition ensures that complacency is kept at bay. And every player remains focused and ready to contribute when called upon. No, that's actually really smart, though. You have plenty of time to find something that really interests you and figure out how to go about it -- and I think most of us aren't going anywhere and are pretty much here to stay, so you'll have plenty of support when you do figure out what route to take.
There is. Maybe I will still go ahead with that, but I don't want to rush into something. I think the best thing is to have a choice and then see how things go from there. That is true. There is plenty of kids around that age who might want to do that.
