i don't know exactly How to word this since i am an outside party but. people have the agency to decide if they want to risk this danger or not.

being openly queer has always been a bit dangerous, everywhere. but being openly queer is also like being a shining light to everyone who can't cope with that danger right now, and potentially changing the mindsets of so many people who see us as an "other".

there are places in the physical world that are still safe, there are real communities and events and shows of defiance out there, there are ways to disconnect your online footprint from your real life. and being open about your identity and beliefs may get more dangerous, yes, but progress is often made by people with the circumstances, supports and sheer will to take that danger.

basically...it's a personal decision. talk to your friends about who isn't in a place to be openly themselves in these new circumstances, and who is, and then respect those decisions. deadname and lie about the people who ask you to do so. but don't force everyone to go back in the closet because it would be safer.

people who need to stop being open are not cowards, but people who keep being open are not stupid. we are allowed to make choices that are not the safest things possible. basically...be aware of the risks, but please don't erase the agency of us all, and don't leave the marginalised groups who can't hide their identities high and dry.

Okay election results will be coming out, eventually at least, so let’s talk about the procedure if trump wins. Firstly, as a queer person, at least for now, you aren’t queer. You’re straight, all your friends are straight, you’re not trans, none of your friends are trans. You aren’t leftist or even moderate. This is the only way to keep yourself and friends safe, especially if trump does everything he’s promised. Martin had texted him, off-handedly, asking if he was free one night this week. Daniel lays back on his lounger, brings the smoothie to his lips and takes a big gulp. It's been a long time since he-- Martin means well, knows what Daniel likes for the most part. It could be fun. Something different.

The waitress leads Daniel to the table he'd reserved, a quiet corner near the back, a wide table, space for plenty of food for them to share. It's one of his favourite Japanese restaurants, one he's been dying to come back to since he arrived back in LA. He'd asked Martin for the guys details, so that he could text him the address himself, but he'd refused to hand them over, told Daniel that Max would be there on time, and not to worry, reassured him again they'd have fun.

Daniel wipes his hands down the front of his colourful shirt, an unreleased one from his own Enchanté collection, a conversation piece he can fall back on if the guy is into fashion as well.

"Daniel?" He hears closely behind him, a thicker accent than Martin's, more European. Daniel turns in his chair, simultaneously standing up at the same time.

"That's me." He quips, holding his hand out to be shaken. It feels overly formal to do, considering they're on a date, but it's second nature to Daniel, at corporate events or in the paddock, to hold his hand out and deliver a firm handshake. Max takes his hand, shaking it firmly.

"I am sorry that Martin put you up to this. We have been friends for a while now, but now that I am working for him, he keeps on trying to set me up with his friends. I tell him I am too busy, organising all his crap and making sure it is all smooth, but he knows my schedule this week too well." Daniel's taken aback a little, by how standoffish Max is being. "Oh, I am Max by the way, did Martin tell you that at least?"

Max moves towards his chair as he's talking, pulling it out and sitting down, leaving Daniel there, standing, taking him in. Daniel fumbles, sits back down, gets his own leg caught on the table leg and tries to play it off cool.

"Yeah he did." Daniel replies, picking up his glass of red wine and taking a sip.

Daniel gets why Martin didn't send him a picture of Max. He's attractive. Muscular and shaped, long hair at the top of his head, all ruffled like he'd barely bothered trying to style it. He's got a loose white shirt on, top button undone where Daniel can see pale skin. A freckle atop his lip that Daniel can't seem to look away from. He's not conventionally attractive by any means, but Martin's done well. Martin knew.

"So, how did you end up working for Martin then?" It seems like common ground they can talk about for now, whilst they wait to order.

"Well, I have known him since we were very young, but he went off and started doing his music stuff, and I went to university and I started studying civil engineering but then moved into audio engineering. Whenever Martin was home, or I visited him, the music was fun, it seemed good fun. So I of course change my degree for him but he had someone very experienced on his team, so I worked for some smaller DJs who were not as good and I helped make them sound better. Anyway, Harry has now quit and Martin asked if I was interested still."

"Wow, so you changed your whole life plan for your best friend?"

"No, it was not really like that at all. I do not think I would have found the job I am now doing if it was not for Martin cause he introduced me to that whole world, but I am not just doing it because of him. I have two cats at home, I would not travel this much and be away from them all the time just for Martin, I enjoy the job."

Max emphasises two cats as if he's left a wife and two children at home, fending for themselves whilst he's off basking in the Ibiza sun or jetting off to another remote festival.

"You travel a lot as well Martin was saying?" Daniel smiles gently, finally being asked a proper question. Polite date etiquette.

"Well, I used to. First year of retirement for me. Was an F1 driver. Won a couple of championships, 'ya know. So yeah, not travelling as much now. Went home for a while, back here now for a bit, go see some friends, find out what life is really all about. Home is Australia by the way."

"Yes, I used to watch you. You were a very good driver actually." Daniel notes how Max says that as if he's an expert, as if he's been commentating on Sky Sports for 25 years and can spot a generational talent from miles off. He feels like he should be offended, but he finds it endearing, complimentary. He has this innate feeling that if Max thought he was a crap driver, he'd say.

"Well, thank you very much, I guess." Daniel says, taking another sip from his red wine.

The waitress comes back over towards them and asks for their order. Daniel takes over, ordering for them both. He's tried so much of it before, he knows what's good. Tuna sashimi, California Rolls, Chicken potstickers, Vegetable tempura, Salmon maki. All different types of things they can split and share between them. The waitress smiles softly at Daniel, closing her notepad and bending to get the menus from them.

"Can I please get a Gin & Tonic, and the Beef noodles please?" Max asks.

Daniel shifts in his seat a little, taken aback, but also slightly worried he's been rude. The waitress jots down Max's order and promises to bring his drink over soon.

"Sorry, thought we could share." Daniel remarks.

"I guessed you thought that, but I am not a very big fan of seafood. I guess Martin did not tell you that." Max's eyes glint as he smiles, and Daniel relaxes again.

"Did you know, the seaweed salad you ordered, most places that is in fact just shredded cabbage. It is much cheaper for them to make and of course most people never know the difference." Max tells Daniel.

"Well I hope it's proper seaweed if I'm paying $40!" Daniel says aghast, and Max laughs, clapping his hands together.

They order plenty more drinks, and enjoy all the food before them, with Daniel having a few take-out boxes stacked in front of him to carry home, due to his presumptuous over-ordering.

Daniel adores how delighted Max gets, small jokes enticing the biggest laughs out of him, and how direct he's being. When Daniel says something wrong, he corrects him straight away. Daniel's also taken aback by how complementary Max is. He tells Daniel within 15 minutes of their date beginning that he likes his smile, and when Daniel moves on to the easy topic of his clothing line, Max praises the new designs Daniel shows him, and gently offers pointers as to what he thinks would work better.

When the waitress brings the bill over, Daniel almost feels saddened that it's over, unsure when he'll see Max again, maybe during the Coachella weekend, but he'll be busy, he knows Martin has a few warm up shows in Las Vegas and at Brooklyn Mirage before he plays on Sunday, so Max won't be at the festival the whole weekend. But he hasn't felt like this in a long time. Not since Scotty. And he doesn't want to let go just yet.

"I've got a cool vinyl collection back at my place if you're into that? Do you like cheesecake? We could get some on the way back." He tries.

"That would be very lovely." Max replies, a beaming smile lighting up his face that cause the skin around his eyes to crinkle.

"Great!" Daniel retorts.

He wakes up to a dead arm in the morning, Max laying atop of it. Daniel pushes some of his hair out of his face, kissing his head gently, and then his lips, right over the freckle, before pulling his arm out slowly. He shakes it above him, trying to get some feeling back into it, before leaning over Max and grasping his phone.

Can you share some of the reasons why people in East German want the ddr back? I’ve got an outsiders view, but it seems like most media considers Germany one of the most influential and successful nations in the EU. Is this not translating down to the populace?

the outside view the world seems to have on germany will never not be mindblowing to me. i am safer here than i would be in many other countries, inside and outside the EU, im not going to refute that. but this place sucks.

this is a pretty big topic that i don't feel qualified to really answer in a single ask. it's complex; the short answer is that germany has been doing a piss poor job at handling numerous current topics, such as modernization of infrastructure and the handling of refugees. especially that last part needs clarification, though. the country is split on whether we should be taking in more people or less, and while i personally always, always, always endorse letting people cross whatever border they need or want to cross, even i can see that it can often seem senseless to "let" people come here when no adjustments are made to grant refugees a proper life here. local communities get overwhelmed with the influx of people from different cultural and language backgrounds, this sort of stress breeds aggression, and then that aggression is directed toward the refugees instead of the system that refused to build them a welcoming home.

this is true for the entire country, but the former east is still largely poorer than the west, and so they feel that sort of crisis the deepest. the reunification happened around the time i was born, so there is still a great deal of people alive today who remember the time before. and to many of them, the rigidity of an authoritarian system seemed to have given them a better, more stable life than they have now under democracy.

we were under merkel rule for much too long, who as a political figure was known in germany for her passion for doing absolutely nothing. we only broke out of that after our last election, and the new government is still kind of stumbling around picking up the pieces.

for as long as i can remember, fascism has been getting worse in all of germany with each passing election. the numbers rightwing parties are making in polls and actual elections are currently at an all-time post-third reich high. its a scary time to be here.

as for influential and successful in the EU, i always like to bring up that germany has some of the slowest internet connections on the continent, and due to its position smack in the middle of europe has also been blocking cross-european train travel, because all of our tracks, stations, and trains, are so old and poorly constructed that other country's trains cannot pass through here.

we arent doing well. we could be doing worse! but we arent doing well, because our people are unhappy, and when people get unhappy, they try to find the easiest way out. for many in the east (AND west, but again due to the east's history and the west's poor handling of it, it's stronger there), that means blaming immigrants and returning to authoritarianism.

and so you dump your laundry onto the floor next to the stranger and his and start sorting through for all your whites

in sync you both pick up your washing and put it into the machine

time passed quickly and soon it was Taehyung’s party

at this point you’re pacing around the room, arms flailing wide at the sudden discovery

“Well, I may or may not have asked Taehyung, and he told me, and then I entered, I did not break into your apartment. Anyway, I didn’t touch anything but the washing machine and I had the lovely experience of being serenaded by your roommate’s sex symphony.”

he made a step forward towards you, almost in a challenging way

“Oh I’ll be having harsh words with him later...” you say as you uncross your arms and put them on your hips.

you stand thinking for a second before it sinks in

“Wait.. what did you hear? You said sex symphony, right?”

“Uh yeah, your roommate was proper going at it with someone. At least he had the decency to do it whilst you were out, I guess.” He chuckled

Hello, I've been trying to educate myself about Catalonia (currently watching Two Catalonias in Netflix, glad to have found your blog!). There's a lot of questions that Im desperate to have an answer for. Sorry bc I havent gone all of the timetable yet. I saw that October 2017 was when it became independent. But what is it independent for? Is it politics? Why is it still part of Spain now? Is there a different government body? I hope u dont take this the wrong way. Thanks in advance. <3

It’s all pretty complicated but I’ll try to sum up the timeline and hope it makes sense.

A lot has happened since 2017 and it was... intense. This is going to be a very long post, so I’ll put it under the cut.

October 1st 2017: the referendum, considered illegal by Spain, police brutality against the voters, etc. That’s been talked about extensively so I’ll skip it. Anyway, the result of the referendum is 90.18% of votes for YES to independence (2,044,038 votes), 7.83% of votes for NO (177,547 votes), and 1.98% votes in BLANK (44,913 votes). The participation rate that could be counted was 43.03% of the population of Catalonia who legally can vote in normal elections. Actually, more people had voted but their votes were kidnapped by the Spanish military police when they stormed voting centers, so those votes were not counted. Other people wanted to vote but couldn’t because they the police attacked and closed their voting center, or because they’re not eligible to vote in elections because they live here but don’t have documents.

So we consider that a victory for YES.

October 3rd 2017: general strike. Ready to take control of the territory, a general strike is called and it is massively followed. The economy is shut down, highways and trains are blocked, etc. Here’s a post from that day. And another one.

October 10th 2017: president of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont declares independence and suspends it 8 seconds later. This was my post at the time:

(Spoiler alert: obviously Spain refused to negotiate. Not only that but they went further in the repression. You’ll see.)

October 16th 2017: activists Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sànchez (the elected presidents of the two most important pro-independence organizations, Òmnium Cultural and ANC respectively) are arrested and put in pre-trial jail. Many demonstrations around Catalonia the next days and weeks and months.

October 27th 2017: following Puigdemont’s words, since the Spanish government has explicitly refused to negotiate, the suspension on the declaration of independence is lifted. The Parliament of Catalonia declares independence (DUI = Declaració Unilateral d’Independència = unilateral declaration of independence). Thousands and thousands of people came to the streets to celebrate, and then in filled Plaça Sant Jaume in Barcelona (the square where the Seat of the Government of Catalonia is) and all the nearby streets and avenues. It was so packed that it was impossible to move, and there was music and singing all the time. We did this to protect the building, because we knew our government was inside signing papers and doing what was necessary to start to implement the Catalan Republic, and to make it absolutely impossible for the Spanish police and/or army to get to the Seat of the Catalan Government and arrest them.

Spain considered the Catalan government criminals and searched for them to jail them, but the following day they were outside of the country and nowhere to be found. The plan was to move to a more democratic European country and create a government on exile there which could effectively coordinate the culmination of the independence process and make independence effective. The reason they couldn’t stay in Catalonia was that they would all get jailed and would not be able to work from jail, so Catalonia would not have a government who could negotiate with the EU, Spain, or whoever was necessary, and who could continue the normal functions of a government to ensure the people of the country can still work and live, while coordinating the participative processes to create our own Constitution, tax collection, etc. But only half of the government made it outside... I’ll expand on this later.

Now let’s see what Spain was up to. The Spanish government applied the article 155 of the Spanish Constitution to Catalonia. This articles deletes the regional government and that comunidad autónoma (region) is ruled directly by the central Spanish government. In practice, what this means is that the whole Catalan government (elected democratically in legal elections recognized by Spain) stops existing, and it is replaced by politicians from the ruling Spanish party, which at the time was PP, a right-wing Catalanophobic party that had only reached 8.5% of votes in the previous Spanish elections in Catalonia. It was like a dictatorship. They controlled the public TV (read this) and banned the use of certain words, they fired people who had affinities with the independentist government, a lot of people went to trial (including even teachers) at the slightest suspicions...

And everything had to stop. Even things you wouldn’t expect to be affected. Everything was affected and the Spanish government’s presence. For example, my mother is a teacher of Catalan language in a public school for adults, and she had to ask permission to the Spanish government directly every time she wanted to use a printer (they were threatened that otherwise they could be sued for wasting public money). Sometimes they even refused her to print class exercises for the students. My department in university also had to stop all the research projects for the following year since they depend on the funds given by the Catalan government. etc.

Obviously, there were protests. During those days, we were busy with demonstrations and strikes, and then learnt that president Puigdemont and others were on exile in Belgium. There were some problems with Spain sending international orders of arrest against them but the crimes they’re accused of don’t exist outside of Spain so they were arrested and temporarily jailed in Germany but not deported. I won’t get in detail because it happened more than once and it would be long.

But half of the Government of Catalonia did NOT cross the border. The whole government, which was a coalition of the PDeCat and ERC parties, met in secret in Llívia (an enclave surrounded by French territory), and then the ERC politicians decided not to follow the plan. There are different reasons behind this change in strategy:

The need for political prisoners to prove that we are not exaggerating. The EU was not taking seriously how repressive Spain could be. They saw the police brutality on the referendum’s voters and shrugged as if nothing happened because nobody had died (though one man almost did). So some of the consellers (equivalent of ministers in the Catalan government) said that they would remain in Catalonia, and they were sure they would be jailed and this would show other countries that there was a reason for the Catalan Government to be on exile, it wasn’t just that they had left because they’re dramatic and don’t want to follow the law.

Jail as a loudspeaker. These same consellers said that being in jail would give them attention from international media that otherwise we wouldn’t have gotten, so they would use their time in jail to explain to the world what was going on and why their countries should show support to Catalonia. Political prisoner Jordi Cuixart later said that this has been the case for him, and he has met with important activists from around the world who came to visit him in jail, so it makes sense.

Aaaand whatever the hell vicepresident Junqueras was talking about. I still don’t understand. He should’ve gone to Belgium in my opinion. He’s just rotting in jail for no reason now.

So we have half of the Catalan Government in Spanish jails and the other half in Belgium. They still remain like that nowadays.

The two parties of the coalition that formed the previous Catalan Government (the one that Spain had dismantled) continued to fight among them. They later explained that Spain threatened that they would send the army to Catalonia and there would be a bloodbath. In phone calls, the delegates of the Spanish government made it clear that they were going to kill people and frame it as it was the fault of the Government of Catalonia. The Government of Catalonia did not want people dead, so they stopped calling on citizens to take control of the territory, the administration, etc. At the time, we did not know why they were suddenly silent, all they said was they were waiting for Spain to negotiate (and everybody was angry because we knew Spain would never negotiate, as Spanish politicians have been saying the whole time).

Then, the Spanish government forced Catalonia to have elections, since it considered that the democratically-elected Government of Catalonia was not in power anymore because Spain had fired them. There was a lot of discussion on what independentist parties should do. These were the different positions:

Catalonia has declared independence and we need to focus all our energy on making it real. All independentist parties have to be working on taking full control of the taxes, administration, and services. We cannot be a candidate to the elections of the Spanish region of Catalonia, because that doesn’t exist anymore and we are in the Republic of Catalonia now. The result of participating in these elections would be legitimizing Spanish rule. But if we don’t participate, only the unionists will vote and the whole Government of the Spanish region of Catalonia (the one that has the real power by now and is recognized by other countries) will be 100% composed of unionist politicians who will make our lives hell (like they did during 155). And the world might take this as “unionists won the elections, so that’s the only legitimate representatives of Catalonia to negotiate with”.

Independentist parties should participate and make the Government of the Spanish region of Catalonia be the Government of the Republic of Catalonia. It’s good that it’s an official legal election accepted by everyone, and there will be representation of all the inhabitants (whether they are unionist or independentist). Problem: this leads us back to where we started, with a Parliament that has a majority of seats for independentist parties but is still the Parliament of a region of Spain.

Independentist parties should participate in the elections of the Spanish region of Catalonia in order to boycott it. Basically, all independentists would be called to vote for their preferred independentist party (PDeCat, ERC or CUP), and once the Parliament of the Spanish region of Catalonia is formed, they never show up. More than half of the Parliament would be empty, so it would be blocked from being efficient. Meanwhile they would be at the real Parliament of the Republic of Catalonia.

After a lot of talk, they choose the 3rd. In theory.

Elections happen, with pretty much the same results from the previous elections so PDeCat and ERC form a coalition government with support from CUP. But the politicians who are in jail or exile are outlawed by Spain and could not participate in elections, so they do a “symbolic” president, Quim Torra, who is like a spokesman for the real president Puigdemont in exile.

So with the leaders of the two bigger independentist parties and civil organizations in jail or on exile, media still banned from using certain words, people getting arrested for taking part in the general strikes, and a general feeling of uncertainess, things started to go very badly.

Suddenly ERC (social-democrat independentist party) decided that we had already failed, and that this showed that the DUI (unilateral declaration of independence) was always going to fail because so many important elements of an independent state work automatically (for example, taxes of Catalan people are automatically sent to Spain, they don’t pass through the Catalan gov, and it’s all informatic so it’s not like we can just stop the caravan that is transporting the money because there is no such a thing) or other mechanisms needed for a country really become independent unilaterally (aka without Spain agreeing) are just impossible for us to create without the support of other independent countries or organizations like the EU or UN. From then on, ERC has defended that we need to find a way to negotiate with Spain and do a referendum that Spain recognizes as legally binding, but Spain has shown they don’t want to let us vote, so we need to be strong enough to force them to have to agree with us. “Strong enough” meaning to have the huge majority of Catalonia be in favour of independence, have the Parliament and other representative bodies be almost absolutely pro-independence, have the councils of all major unions be in favour of constant mobilization for independence, etc. So the most repeated sentence by ERC is, to this day, “enxamplar la base” (make the base/grassroots wider), and that’s what they dedicate most of their efforts towards, trying to convince undecided people or Spanish leftists or left-leaning people who they think can be convinced.

CUP (anti-capitalist independence party) said that the important thing to become independent is the support of the masses and constant mobilization. We already had a majority of the population in favour of independence and they showed to be ready for constant mobilization. General strikes had been successful, so what we needed was to do an indefinite strike (so, instead of just striking a couple of days, declare a strike that would not end until our demands -independence and freedom of political prisoners- are met). This is difficult because most people cannot afford to stop showing up to work for such a long time as would be needed, and the solidarity funds (the collections of funds used to aid workers who need it during strikes and to help pay for lawyers or whatever the repressed protestors need) could never be enough for a whole country. Nevertheless, lots of people are ready to make sacrifices.

And the other party, president Puigdemont’s PDeCat (the liberal independentist party). They said that we had to work harder on having all the state structures (“estructures d’estat”, those words are used a lot). State structures would be all the things necessary for a country to function independently. It includes the tax collection system, ambassies, administration system, justice system, police force (I know this is debated but at least we all can agree that we do NOT need Spanish cops imposing Spanish laws), postal service, etc. PDeCat’s efforts are centered on this, especially on economical aspects. They are still now working in this direction, with the idea that Spain will never agree to negotiate and so our only way of becoming independent is behaving like we’re independent: when we have our own tax collection, state services, citizenship, ambassies, etc. we will be independent whether or not Spain recognizes it, because we will be behaving independently and will not depend on Spain.

After that a lot of important things happened to, but basically the coalition government (PDeCat and ERC) fought all the time. As I just explained, their strategies are opposed, and ERC accuses PDeCat of being too radical and “scaring away” the Spanish left who could maybe one day let us have a referendum agreeded on with Spain, while PDeCat and CUP accuse ERC of having turned independence in a long-term goal instead of a short-term goal like it was until 2017.

So basically, we failed and did not achieve independence. We declared it but were not able to keep it going. Most people feel like the political class ruined it, because the people were ready to do what was needed (as proved in the strikes like October 3rd 2017, the occupation of the Barcelona airport on 4th October 2019, the so-called Battle of Orquinaona, etc). There’s been great protests until the covid-19 lockdown, it’s not like we ever really stopped. But most politicians seem too focused in fighting each other for the best strategy, especially ERC who is not participating in the meetings with the other parties any more. It’s all very confusing for the people, and it seems that we don’t know everything that happened in late 2017.

That’s pretty much it. I hope it was more or less understandable, and if you’re still confused, don’t worry, we are confused too. Now, seriously, if you want more clarification on any point you can send me another ask and I’ll be happy to answer. Meanwhile, after remembering all of this, I will be crying in my room ✌️ (jk)

there's a part in all or nothing that really stayed with me: when mourinho mentioned that some players have enough talent to rise to the top but sometimes they don't commit enough with their talent and don't go forward in their careers. this is dele summarized. i don't think he's exceptional but he's better than average. sadly he hasn't done anything in the past two seasons to deserve a place in the starting line up or a better european club.

Oh boy, when and how did my blog become the place to be to discuss Dele?  Nothing against you, my dear, I know Im the one who reblogged a post about this yesterday. But I just wanna state that Im really not that invested or feel like I have much to add to the discussion. I didn't even finish watching All or Nothing (I should, tho because that was hilarious and highly entertaining). 

Obviously once upon a time I followed Dele and Spurs really closely, so I still see a lot of him on my dash and have been more os less following his situation through my mutuals. When I saw that post yesterday, it was the first time I actually agreed with something on that matter, hence why I reblogged. Im also one of those bitches who’s incapable of not having an opinion on everything AND I do still have some leftover takes from when I did follow the guy, so... 

Im just gonna say everything I think about this and then exclude myself from this narrative, ok? I agree with you, I think Dele is kind of stuck. He started out as this really talented teenager, but as he got older he failed to deliver the consistency and reliability that top clubs look for. If they want a player that has some explosions of talent and creativity and then drops, they’ll 100% go with a teenager and not a 24yo. And that might explain why top clubs aren't lining up to sign him, even tho it’s clear that he’s not a part of Spurs plan. 

I also think that the doubts about his professionalism are not unfounded or a result of racism. On my last days of following Dele last year, I saw him get away with being drunk at a house party around the New Years/Boxing Day fixtures, where he failed to perform well and Spurs dropped a lot of important points (they could have risen to 2nd place, I think, if they had won all those matches). At some point he even brought Troy Parrot along. Now, as a more senior member of the squad, he should act as a good role model for the younger ones, not the other way around. Somehow the media didn’t catch on it, but to me that always felt very unprofessional and disrespectful towards the team. Also, if I saw it, who’s to say that someone at Spurs didnt see it too? Maybe that’s the beginning of his downfall with José. And Poch (who’s now seen by the fandom as the Dele Savior) questioned his lifestyle too, implying that maybe his constant injuries were a result of his choices...

Also, generally speaking, no player is universal. With the exception of maybe Messi and R*naldo, there’s no player that every single manager would want in their teams. So maybe Mourinho just doesn’t want Dele and that’s that. Like him or not, that’s his right as manager. Eric was all but finished with Poch and now he’s José’s darling, for example. It’s the most normal thing in football, and happens to hundreds of players every day. Maybe Dele will turn things around and live up to his potential if/when he changes clubs, maybe he wont. Ultimately I don’t really care, since Im not invested in his career. And broadly speaking I don’t think people outside of the fandom care that much either. The press tries to push a feud narrative from time to time, because Dele is still popular and it sells. But most pundits, commentators and fans I follow outside of tumblr aren’t too concerned tbh. 

However, I understand why his fans would care. Seeing your fave go through something like this can be really frustrating. And obviously none of this means that people can’t like him. Ive loved my fair share of “problematic” players and will probably continue to do so. I just don’t think Dele is this poor victim who never did anything wrong and is now being punished by an evil man, that’s all.

the feeling of disgust

I’m not sure if I talked about this here but this is something that’s been going on for a while. I think the first time I felt it intensely was in 2014. It usually feels like a nostalgia, not by a time long gone that I have lived, but by a time and a life I never have. I don’t mean that nostalgia that I feel when I see ancient ruins and I wonder and wander how was the hedonious pagan life, and it is also different when I fantasize about medieval europe or glamourize the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and else. this nostalgia I am talking about is accompanied by a melancholic feeling, and sometimes it is even bucolic as well, as I usually associate it with the countryside and with summer. it is also followed by a deep, intense feeling of rejection, not belonging, not being a part of something, not beinig welcomed, not seen as an equal, not desired, backstabbed, not enough. 

I am not very aware of where this comes exaclty, I am really not sure, sometimes I theorize if I never felt so much cared for by my father, if my sexuality’s journey made me feel excluded, or if my mixed background had to do with it. regardless, today it also involves the perception of men about me. 

this has been a long going issue for me and to be honest is excrutiating to write it down, I am not even sure if I have the grammatical skills and vocabulary to translate my feelings into words. but I can recall several instances in which I felt this feeling of disgust. even within my bestfriends, because sometimes I wouldn’t go out with them as much, and I remember that since I was a kid. sometimes amongst muslim acquaintaces I would feel like an outsider, as I am a roman catholic, but among roman catholics, I would feel like an outsider, as I part of my family is not catholic. amongst groups of european descent I feel like an outsider, as only part of my family immigrated from europe, but I would not necessarily belong with the latin kids either, or the lebanese ones. I would not be able to relate to the lower middle class kids, as I never experienced their struggle, but I could not fully understand the wealthy kids either. I was never friends with guys because they were not sensitive enough to undertsand me, but I always felt a bit left out with the girls because there was always a moment that “you wouldn’t understand” (which I wouldn’t, as I am not a woman). 

with the popular kids I would feel like an outsider, as I was not as popular as them, and with the normal kids, I would feel like an outsider, as I was more popular than them. with atheists I would not feel comfortable, as I am very absorbed into the divine and mysticism, but with religious people I will not feel comfortable either. I cannot relate to people that do not fall under beauty standards, but I cannot have the priviledge of people that do. I am too masculine, traditional, mongamous for some, I am too feminine, lustful, modern for others. It is never here, it is never there, it seems always in between. its quite lonely sometimes. and, regarding what triggered this feeling this time....well, thats quite another paragraph. 

so I met a guy.................................does it always have to start like that? lord. anyways, similar shiny qualities I adore; handsome, tall, slender, stylish, smart, etc. we discussed a more friends with benefits sorta arrangement, but within two days of me talking to him he starts saying things like “your lashes are making me fall for you,” which I felt a bit uncomfortable because it was toooo soon. and when he came to my apartment he insisted that even if I was not looking for romanticism at the moment, that he would still try to win my heart or some (what appears to be) bullshit like that. I did not get any of my hopes up, I was (am?) truly not interested. (plus, I can see the type of men he is interested in; fit, tall, older, and I am not so much the style). but I am a *cancer* for god’s sake, of course having a pretty boy telling me such things will get me intrigued?? but few days after he seems pretty cold (whereas im just the same), and etc. maybe im not the shiny new thing anymore but still, makes me wonder. the thing that gets me sad is: he stalks me and starts following a buch of other gay men in my account that he had no knowledge of prior to meeting me (????) and I *despise* it when gay men do that, because they do it so, so oftenly it sickens me. 

*this* reallllly triggers my feeling of disgust, how could someone possibly begin something, start liking someone etc, try to build any sort of romantic relationship with the idea that “well in case this does not work out at least I have these new guys I could hook up with” ?????? does n o t make sense. nevertheless, I dont mind about the guy itself as much, its the banality of this action that bothers me, the constant obsession with instant gratification amongst cis gay male is beyond. this put other things into perspective tho, it triggers my feelings that I dont belong in my own community, or that - because many of them come with this “Im falling for you” discourse - they do not see me as equals, perhaps if I was fitter or more popular, but for them, they can **** whoever they want and then I could be waiting for a fairytale (which I do, not from them). and then this also triggered the fact that he is richer, fitter, and freer than me and we are both the same age, and I feel like I do not feel for him as much as I feel for the feeling of not belonging, of being rejected, because “well, just in case, I am already following someone prettier anyways.” and it is disgusting because he - albeit being colder - is still telling me things about how he wants to conquer my heart?????????????? girl bye. 

situations like this create a very strong feeling of digust from me, not the “ewww” disgust, the “oh this attitude sickens me,” and it makes me increasingly distrustful of the gays... regardless, I do know that a lot of this is within me, because as soon as they are colder my mind goes to that place where I can see all of them hanging out without me, pool partying without me, because anyways I am not seen as their equal. a behavior that emulate similar feelings in mass, in academia, in brazil, in my friend group, within my family. its almost as though I immideately, unvoluntarily, (and sometimes irrevocably) take myself out of a situation, in which I was inserted in, and I start watching it from above, I aqcuire and oberver role, a narrator, and I am suddenly not a protagonist anymore, and perhaps I just thought I was. this specific thing that happens in my mind is beyond painful for me.

this constant transit between the east and west, feminine and masculine, pride and shyness, lustfulness and virtuousness, the high and low, the above and the below, it reaps me apart in a dichotomy I have little control over. at the same time, it is this dichotomy who has given me so much, it is what makes me so unique, different, it is part of my idenitity to the core and I am proud of it, so many times people look at me in awe when they learn of my background and comment things like “thats why you’re so beautiful” or “you’ve got the beauty of many places,” and beauty is a common theme in this website..its something that brings me so much joy, but at the same time I can fit in a little in many places, its appears I can never fit wholy anywhere.

I have a lot of Feelings about this VE Day street party they're trying to have downstairs. I love community, but something about the "if we spend time with people we will die" context this year puts a real damper on my willingness to dress up and have fun. My neighbours have a speaker, which has been blasting music since midday. Not Glenn Miller. Not Vera Lynn. I could be into that, the otherworldliness of traveling in time. No, bloody wedding music. This Is The Way To Amarillo. Sex Bomb. Also, Vincent by Don Maclean, that famous song about suicide. I want to kill someone, which is lucky because the virus transmits asymptomatically. Please stop delivering leaflets and bingo cards. The virus can survive on paper for 72 hours. Please stop trying to kill members of my family and village. The bunting all shredded in the wind, leaving plastic bits of dragon all over my forest walks, and I can't pick them up. Also, if VE Day is "alienating your neighbours by blasting disturbing music at them, me and my collection of Caretaker records think that's a fight we can win. Part of it is, I am far too autistic to handle 6 hours of other people's music being blasted at top volume, regardless of how many years the war has been over for. And especially this midday heat. I can't come out onto my doorstep, and I don't really trust the kinds of people who are choosing to do so to be people taking the lockdown seriously. I'm trying to lean into the Scarfolk-like humour of a mandatory street party that no one is allowed to actually attend - or leave. I can't hang out with my neighbours properly, but I'm also stuck at home so the music comes in regardless. I can see the bunting, and ive got a leaflet with what's happening when including tea and scones at 3pm, which I presume won't actually happen. But I can imagine what eating a scone might be like. Part of it is the role of nostalgia as this symbolically empty, hollow thing. I've no idea what the people outside are celebrating. War? Peace? Brexit? National identity (English, Welsh, British, European, global?) The Concept Of Parties? The War looms large in the British imagination, but...what we are celebrating today is not what they celebrated in 1946. And when you look at the anti-war 60s and the nazi-imagery-appropriating 70s punks, where the War was embraced by the counter culture in ways which shocked their parents who had served, or even the national trauma of the Boomers like Roger Waters and in Penda's Fen, the awareness that they *hadn't* served in a war. But what are we celebrating today, people who have never seen or been alive during a war (obviously not including the wars Britain continues to participate in, but the war in iraq or the falklands is not The War). It's just this hollow symbol you can project anything onto, and in representing everything it represents nothing. Nationalism is supposed to bring people together - and im pretty nationalist in a lot of ways, I love the Queen and the Great Escape and belting out Jerusalem at top volume - but when you have these organised Nationalist Events I feel very uneasy, and further apart from people, because the symbol is so vague and empty that I've no idea what my neighbours are celebrating. Perhaps the fact it is sunny. And I'm thinking about the Caretaker, because hauntology is the opposite of retro and nostalgia. That is, the idea of hauntology is media which depicts the past...but makes you aware of the act of interpretation. Whether that's memory, or using crackle/flicker/glitch to talk about the impermanence of recorded media. The War that is happening outside is all union jack bunting and the great British spirit and spitfires and speeches by Churchill, these recycled aesthetics and emotions that signify nothing. And what people like Caretaker or Scarfolk do is the depict the past but in a left field way, exploring alternative emotions and meanings in the historic texts. Often ones which disturb or unsettle.

article 13 (aka now article 17) - some thoughts

so article 13 was passed this morning by the EU parliament with 348 votes in favor, 274 against and idk ... my thoughts are all over the place.

im fcking livid. im want to scream and hope each and every one of those 348 meps steps into dog poop every day for the rest of the year, finds themselves locked out of their offices for the foreseeable future and gets a looong letter from their national tax investigation very soon

im fcking scared. bcos what better way to completely alienate young europeans and make them lose trust in european institutions than this. in two months we are to vote on a new eu parliament in an election that has propably been targeted by outside malicious influence campaigns for quite some time, in which far right and eurosceptic parties could gain support, basicaly in which progressive, pro-eu parties should hope for all the support they could get. and what better way to do that than making young ppl feel like their concerns don’t get heard, so whats even the point - DONT MAKE US DESPISE YOU IF YOU WANT OUR SUPPORT

i have no idea about the consequences of this vote tbh. its hard to find balanced opinions about this even thought thats exactely what i need right now. on the one side there’s the shouting and tears and the understandable panic that this is basically it for us european tumblrs, and youtubers and social media users. that when this shit becomes law all thats left for us to share are pics/vids of ourselves and, if we are lucky, the sun and the sky as long as no one gets a copyright on those as well, that we might as well delete everything now bcos our countries have up to two years to implement this shit but whats stopping them for doing it like tomorrow. on the other side there seems to be nothing but those who lobbied for this law celebrating a win for their own interests, disregarding all and any concerns on its possible wider implications while maybe not even understanding those concerns in the first place, and what it could mean politically (see point 2.)

idk what to make of it on a national level, in my case: in germany. our current goverment’s coalition agreement explicitly opposed upload filters and at least as reported today, it seems they want to prevent them here in germany when implementing this new eu law into our national law. where this could actually go? no idea. they could just break their coalition agreement as they did on so many other occasions. they could maybe try to pull it off but then completely butcher it making it a little bit less worse or ten times as worse, chances are 50:50. or they could actually pull it off and then get rightfully hated by every other countries’ ppl whose goverment implemented the filters, maybe also get sued by the eu as they got on so many other occasions, all the while a significant number of meps from germany probably voted in favour of this whole shit (im writing without having gone through the list of votes which has just been published)

so yeah everything sucks.

and idk what if anything this means for whatever this is that the british parliament is doing this week on brexit, but good luck to our UK peeps, i hope you’re gonna do betther than the rest of us.

Sabrina raced across the campus glancing at the clock tower in the distance. She was going to be late for her career planner meeting for sure. Every second that she watched ticking by felt like a personal taunt on behalf of the clock. “Shit she muttered, trying to pick up the pace. She eyed the double doors to the building straight ahead and slowed down to avoid crashing straight into them. Once inside she blinked the sunlight out of her eyes, speed walking the corridor half blind from the lighting transition and almost into the planner herself.

“Oh! Sabrina! You’re early.” The planner said with a frown checking her watch. “You aren’t supposed to be here for another ten minutes.” She chided knowingly. “Well, if you’re on time you’re late.” Sabrina huffed, repeating the mantra she’d been told and taught by her ever-barring father since childhood. She put on her best smile and extended a hand towards the planner, “Sabrina Russell.” The planner returned her smile, and shook Sabrina’s hand, “Ms. Robertson, my office is right around this corner.” She said, motioning to the hall to Sabrina’s left.

The two turned and entered the first door on the right and Sabrina took her spot in the chair opposite of the desk and waited patiently while Ms. Robertson organized herself and pulled out Sabrina’s file. “Now, Ms. Russell, we usually don’t schedule a meeting until the end of first year so that you can decide on what you would like to major in and we help you start to point towards that goal. However you requested to move this meeting up, and we allowed it based on your high marks. Is there a major you have in mind?” Ms. Robertson said, hands clasped over the manila folder on the desk in between them.

Sabrina saw her name printed on the side, knowing that her parents were worried for her and called this meeting on her behalf, pulling alumni favors to get the meeting pushed up. The truth was she had no idea what she wanted to major in. It felt as if all of the motivation and drive she had the year leading up to college simply vanished once she started classes. Everything just seemed so dreadfully boring compared to how she thought college would feel, not that she really knew what to expect. Knowledge retention and conceptual understand came as easily to her as breathing, and so being a straight A student was effortless. The problem was, she didn’t know who to be outside of class. A numbness had eaten away at her energy and motivation, she spent most of her days laying on her bed, staring at the ceiling with headphones in and not really noticing the music that she was listening to. Life seemed like a haze.

The only people who benefit from the experience of “becoming racialized” are often those belonging to majority groups who have the *druuuum roll* privilege of living their life until the suddenly realization that racial dynamics and such societal forces exist. I stand accused — paradoxically — of trying to Islamise Nigeria while also being accused by Boko Haram terrorists of being against Islam. My Vice-President is a devout man, a Christian pastor. He, too, is accused of selling out his religion, because of his support for me.

This is not the first time that I — nor, indeed, my Christian-Muslim evenly split cabinet — have been the subject of such nonsense. Fortunately, the facts speak differently from the words of those who seek to divide us from one another.

Since my administration has been in power, Boko Haram has been significantly and fatally degraded; I have befriended church leaders and church groups both within and outside our country; my Vice-President has addressed and opened dialogue with Muslims up and down our land.

In all things, we seek that which all well-meaning Christians and well-meaning Muslims must seek: to unite, respect, and never to divide. Does it not say “There is no compulsion in religion” (Qur’an 2.256)? Does it not say “Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us” (Luke 9.50)? This, surely, is the path that followers of both our two great religions must walk. UNFORTUNATELY, those who wish us all to walk apart have recently found another focus for their efforts: the tragic clashes between nomadic herdsmen and settled farmers in the central regions of Nigeria.

For generations, herders have driven their cattle from the north to the centre of our country; they tend to be predominantly Muslim, although not exclusively. The farmers, in certain areas of central Nigeria, are predominantly Christian. The causes of this conflict are not religious or theological, but temporal. At the heart of this discord is access to rural land, exacerbated both by climate change and population growth.

Sadly, there are some who seek to play fast and loose and so make others believe that these are not the facts. When religion is claimed as the cause — and by those who know that it is not — it only makes finding a resolution more difficult.

The government has taken action to mediate, to bring the two groups together in peace and unity. But we also need all parties to follow the teachings of the scriptures, and encourage reconciliation rather than cause division. As it is said:

“Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear?” (Mark 8.18).

As our constitution codifies, politicising religion has no place in Nigeria; for it makes us turn away from one another; it makes us retreat into our communities and walk different paths.

I believe that there is a better way. To those who seek to divide, I still hold my hand out in brotherhood and forgiveness. I ask only that they stop, and instead encourage us to turn towards one another in love and compassion. Nigeria belongs to all of us. This is what I believe.
