Checklist For Writing Essay:
Masterlist
BUY ME A COFFEE
More of a person note for me, when polishing off an essay to double check the criteria.
Times New Roman
Size 12
10% of word count over if needed.
Italicize works of art.
“_” for chapters/books.
Name of Artwork, Artist name, Date, Size, Location
Try to find images of the work with people/in the gallery space.
Spell out any number below 100 (eg. Three dimensional)
Double Spaced
(Not cheating to share your work with someone on the course and discuss)
Must use Footnotes, MHRA refrencing style
Footnotes sometimes count in word count DOUBLE CHECK
Footnote numbers should always appear after the full stop at the end of the relevant sentence, even when they refer to a point made midsentence.
When writing visual analysis, consider closing your eyes as someone reads back what you’ve written about the artwork, and consider if you can clearly visualise in your mind from what you’ve written.
Paragraph organisation by: Intro/ paragraphs on separate ideas/ conclusion
Online walkthrough gallery. Make arguments/convince when writing, of what you see/ how you understand it.
Talk about materials used.
Space it inhabits and effect on observer.
Academic sources must be used.
Short comings in the essay/academic paper to be discussed and evaluated.
JSTOR
Website and access to academic papers usually needed to have uni library sign in. Some museums have sources too. Browse library or articles in library database.
Find interesting texts, then use and write about it. Footnotes included in work count.
Museum repository, Wikipedia to start.
WHAT IS MOST SIGNIFICANT TO YOU?
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:

Researching Online: A Guide
Below are worked examples of how to do an essay or research project using only online resources.
Don’t spend ages looking for one article or book unless it is really essential and even then, you may not be able to get it, but you will find something related.
Vary your search terms, e.g. for the examples below: early modern, renaissance, reformation, sixteenth century might all be relevant.
Follow links in articles and on collections – often, footnotes in journals online may be hyperlinked to the item (especially in more recent publications), you can see similar items, or who has cited that work. For primary sources/collections, catalogues may suggest similar items too.
There will be dead ends and frustrations but persevere – there is lots of material out there.
Save things using a citation programme like Zotero or Mendeley
If you find something interesting and potentially useful for another topic, bank it for later
Be creative and use sources you might not have thought about before, for example the sound archive in the British Library and think across period and geography.
Google Scholar and on JSTOR/other platforms, Project Muse which is another very good platform with loads of open access material.
USTC: the USTC is a database of early modern printed books across Europe

Happy Independent Bookstore Day!
Tomorrow (Apr 25) I’ll be in San Diego for the launch of my new novel, Red Team Blues, at 7PM at Mysterious Galaxy Books, hosted by Sarah Gailey. Please come and say hi!
_,.-'~'-.,__,.-'~'-.,__,.-'~'-.,__,.-'~'-.,__,.-'~'-.,_
It’s Independent Bookstore Day! I love bookstores, especially indies. I’m a recovering bookseller (love you, BakkaPhoenix!) and an inveterate and absurdly optimistic buyer of books — just this weekend, I bought three books at the LA Times Festival of Books, from Pages and Octavia’s Bookshelf!
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/24/tax-loss-harvesting/#ibd
Supporting indie bookstores doesn’t mean foregoing the convenience of buying online. Libro.fm pioneered a model that lets you nominate your favorite local bookstore, which receives part of the proceeds from every audiobook you buy at Libro (where all the audiobooks are DRM-free).
Libro is celebrating indie bookstores all week with stellar deals on an incredible lineup of audiobooks, from Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower to Chokepoint Capitalism, the book Rebecca Giblin and I wrote about how monopolies (including bookstore monopolies like Amazon) destroy the livelihoods of creative workers, and how to fight back:
https://libro.fm/ibd
You can also back your favorite indie bookstore when you shop online at Bookshop.org, who — like Libro — donate a portion of the cost of every book you buy to a nominated local bookseller:
https://bookshop.org/
Of course, nothing beats actually visiting your local bookstore, browsing the books, reading the shelf-reviews, and talking to knowledgeable, intelligent, passionate booksellers in person. I’m about to embark on a tour for my next novel, Red Team Blues, and I’ll be stopping at many great indie stores on the way.
Tomorrow, I’ll be in San Diego at Mysterious Galaxy Books for a launch with Sarah Gailey. On Wednesday, I’ll be in Burbank at Dark Delicacies. On May 5, I’ll be in Mountain View with Mitch Kapor at Books, Inc. There are plenty more stops, in PDX, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, DC, Gaithersburg, and all over the UK, finishing in Berlin:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/19/whats-wrong-with-iowa/#red-team-blues-tour
I hope to see you there! Also, my family has asked that you stage an intervention if you see me buying more books while I’m on tour!
_,.-'~'-.,__,.-'~'-.,__,.-'~'-.,__,.-'~'-.,__,.-'~'-.,_
Catch me on tour with Red Team Blues in San Diego, Burbank, Mountain View, Berkeley, San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, DC, Gaithersburg, Oxford, Hay, Manchester, Nottingham, London, and Berlin!

How do you make and save money?
It’s mostly about increasing your income, and then reducing how much of that income you actually need to spend. This is what I do. Not all of it is technically allowed because of my university’s employment rules, but I haven’t run into trouble yet. It’s not always fun to live frugally, but it allows me to indulge in the things that matter to me.
Increasing income:
I receive a termly stipend as part of my scholarships, covering my rent and utilities and leaving me with a little money left over.
I work at least one shift at the student bar per week, and usually receive tips.
I do part-time paid internships during term-time, and full-time paid internships in most holidays.
I work for my university by taking shifts in the libraries, and working with admissions and outreach.
I offer myself for some compensated research trials and surveys at my uni.
I do online tutoring, mostly to foreign highschoolers whose parents are willing to pay a fortune for my university’s name.
I work freelance in translation services and proofreading in my native languages. This pays by the word.
I offer basic beauty services (waxing, eyebrows, etc.), styling and tailoring/mending services to students at a reduced rate compared to local salons and tailors.
I sell PDF copies of my notes and lecture transcripts to students on my course, and very occasionally write essays for a higher fee.
I babysit/pet-sit/house-sit for my professors, neighbours, and other local families I know.
I receive occasional cash prizes for competitions.
I have some music and poetry published, and receive a little bit of money regularly as royalties.
I sell clothes etc. on behalf of people who are too old or lazy to use online secondhand sites, and take a portion of the cost.
I sell a few printables and some of my embroidery and other handicrafts on Etsy.
I take on any little ‘odd job’ offered to me. Last week I was paid £25 as an extra in a student film production.
I have a few investments, and I withdraw portions of the interest already generated if I feel I need to.
My parents send me a small amount of money every month (something like £75) specifically for groceries.
Reducing outgoings:
All of my tuition is covered by my scholarships, plus a single airfare to and from home per year.
I get all my fish free from my neighbour, and I eat a lot of it.
I get all my milk free, in exchange for doing the eyebrows of the girl who runs the dairy near me.
I buy the rejected fruit and vegetables from the greengrocer’s at the end of the day for a discount.
I buy rice and beans in bulk from the international market a few miles from my house.
I cook everything from scratch at home. Most meals I make come out at less than a £1 spend per portion, because I buy in bulk.
I walk everywhere, and I have a Railcard for when I need to use the train.
I pirate books and movies, or use my university’s libraries. I never, ever pay for books.
I always shop in sales or usually secondhand, and I’m really good at using discount codes.
I don’t bother with fancy salons. I do most of my cosmetic work myself, or I go to independent aestheticians who work from their houses.
I get a friends’ discount with the dry cleaning shop I use, because it’s run by the local monastery and I know most of the monks there.
I don’t have any subscriptions or monthly payments to anything except magazines. My phone and laptop were bought outright for me as a part of my scholarship agreement, and I don’t have a car or any streaming services.
I have a black and white television (the licensing charge for B&W in the UK is significantly lower than colour).
I use a cashback app whenever I buy anything online. It’s only a small percentage, but it adds up over time.
I never buy alcohol. There are more than enough events with free drinks in a student city.
Saturday brunch was recently swapped to a homemade brunch, so now I no longer pay for any meals out at all.
Most of my cleaning products are homemade in the way my grandmother taught me. All you really need is bar soap, white vinegar, lemon juice and a cheap bottle of bleach in your cleaning kit.
I never, ever forget to use my student discount.

I have started a venture into a new field of creative writing.
After twenty six years in the UK, and careers in law and psychotherapy, I have upped once again and moved to the other side of the world, to the thunderous welcome of Cyclone Gabrielle. The forced isolation to the background of 150km/h gusts of winds’ melody, turned out the perfect storm for the birth of my first book.
With a husband on a transatlantic plane, stranded with two kids in a small house which felt like it was made of straw, we cowered quietly, as the cyclone tore through the country, with only one bottle of wine and three bags of lollies to keep us sane… I naturally found these the perfect conditions to make a start on a novel I had been cultivating for decades and finished in just one week.
The story of women, as I have come to think of it, has been more consciously on my mind ever since I wrote my dissertation on women in classical Athens, back in the day - BC day (Before Children). It was with no small sense of unease to read it again in AC epoch..
During my Masters in Science course, I revisited the story again, this time in the form of an essay on Internalised Misogyny. Then I had to let it all gently brew, allow the dust of ignorance and anger settle down and open the door of my mind a bit more. It’s been only ajar for far too long and that wouldn’t do anymore. It took almost another ten years but An Inflammable Act of Kindness, published by a small indie publisher in January, was the conclusion of all the thinking on this topic.
It is a fully formed thing which represents my view on women in this world we live in. It is a ‘thank you’ and it is an ‘I forgive you’ and it no doubt will be ‘please, can you forgive me’ one day also. As we know, parenting is a moveable beast.
Inspired by true events, this is a book about being mothers, daughters, sisters and friends. It is about women’s love and hate for each other. It is about what we do to and for each other. I try to examine with honesty, precision and (my) humour, the development of female identity, challenging the overarching culture of internalised misogyny through different story threads. The book embodies the value of silver linings, their prize and their cost, and, ultimately, it is a celebration of the transformative power of female relationships.
It’s a song for women, but I can’t sing so I wrote it instead.
The book is available to buy on Amazon and all major online book retailers.

Top!Luke Masterlist
7-Eleven (ao3) - iCheeseYou (EHkook) luke/ashton T, 74k
Summary: Ashton Irwin is a master of thievery. He steals from general stores, food markets, jewelry shops, museums, and people’s homes. Never once did he get caught nor did anyone find out his identity. He loves being a thief. Stealing is his addiction, and he has no intention on curing it.
However, there is one place and one place alone that he does not steal from, and that’s the 7-Eleven at the corner street. He goes in late at night to buy things for himself and to see a boy who works during that time named Luke Hemmings.
Backstage (ao3) - SecondsOfMuke michael/luke M, 1k
Summary: When possessive Luke wants to show Michael how much better he is than the backstage crew member who winked at him.
Or
Muke Smut before a concert.
Better Than FIFA? (ao3) - emiliathegreat (puckdummy) michael/luke E, 2k
Summary: Hotel nights on tour are usually a blessing, but with all the shit Luke’s been facing lately, it’s exactly the opposite. Michael isn’t one to help, either.
do it better (ao3) - lourrygum ot4 N/R, 8k
Summary: takes place during the time michael lost his passport and was stuck in the US while his band performed in the UK. He feels upset about it and stops answering their calls and may or may not unfollow them on twitter, leading to questions and anxiety.
or, ¾ of 5sos go to the US to see michael and end up fucking him senseless.
English Love Affair (ao3) - takeitoffhemmo michael/luke E, 21k
Summary: Where Luke can’t write an essay and maybe falls in love with his sort of tutor
How did we end up here (ao3) - BrokenTailLights luke/ashton E, 4k
Summary: Where Luke hates guests, but maybe he can tolerate them if 'guests’ include curly-haired, muscular teenage boys with cute giggles
Insecurities (ao3) - gonefornow luke/calum T, 3k
Summary: Luke and Calum have been together for a while now and Luke wants to take Calum out. Unfortunately, Calum isn’t ready to make their relationship public and it makes Luke insecure.
i think they’re cute, though (ao3) - cliffakitten luke/ashton E, 2k
Summary: Honestly, there should be some kind of warning for shit like this: Your amazing, adorable boyfriend has recently bought glasses and looks fit as fuck, you’re going to want to do unspeakable, dirty things to him. Please attempt to control your imminent hard on.
– Or Ashton has new glasses and Luke really wants to fuck him in them.
kitten (ao3) - orphan_account michael/luke N/R, 1k
Summary: michael has been flirting with his new friend calum, and luke has to show him whose kitten he really is
Lipstick Stains (ao3) - gonefornow luke/calum T, 3k
Summary: Luke flirts with a fan. Calum uses unusual tactics to get his attention back.
My Bad (ao3) - iCheeseYou (EHkook) luke/ashton, brief ashton/harry, minor michael/calum T, 128k
Summary: “What if I have a tiny crush on a guy who doesn’t even know I exist? How do I get his attention?”
Ashton finally gets it, but not in a way he thought he’d get it.
No Chance (ao3) - iCheeseYou (EHkook) michael/luke, calum/ashton T, 72k
Summary: So Ashton’s going on a road trip with his friend, Calum, and he invited me to tag along. Being the adventurous shit I am, I said yes, but I wouldn’t have if I knew that Luke Hemmings was going as well. God, I hate that guy, and the feeling’s mutual. Why does that annoying brat have to come along? And Ashton and Calum expect us to be friends? Yeah, right. There’s no chance that Luke Hemmings and I, Michael Clifford, are ever going to get along.
passionately curious (ao3) - cliffakitten luke/ashton E, 17k
Summary: 'Luke Hemmings'
At this, he nearly choked for the second time that morning, since he just happened to know someone with that name. That someone being, his next door neighbour, the very hot neighbour, who Ashton may or may not have a huge crush on.
Yeah, that Luke Hemmings. Who apparently orders sex toys online…who knew? Definitely not Ashton.
The best kind of trouble (ao3) - CliffordAffliction michael/luke E, 71k
Summary: After Michael is sent to a strict Preparatory school he meets the school troublemaker, Luke Hemmings, and his world begins to change
welcome to a new kind of tension (ao3) - orphan_account luke/ashton E, 2k
Summary: “You will be the death of me,” Luke growled into Ashton’s mouth, pushing the older boy back onto their hotel bed. “I swear you’ll kill me one day.”
“Oh no, we don’t want that, now do we?” Ashton smirked, his breath leaving him in a gasp as Luke bit down on his bottom lip, soothing the sting with his tongue.
wrapped around your finger (ao3) - kittenclemmings michael/luke E, 2k
Summary: Michael wants to please Luke.
Tinder Boy (ao3) - boomercal luke/calum N/R, 10k
Summary: After a few fateful swipes Luke and Calum ended up hooking up from Tinder, then they went their separate ways… at least they tried to.
Your Hips, My Hands, You Swing, and You Dance (ao3) - lashtonaf luke/ashton E, 3k
Summary: Luke ends up meeting a pretty & giggly boy at the club, and they get acquainted quickly ;-)

Myzaxbysvisit.com – Take Zaxby’s Guest Survey – Win $ 1000
Myzaxbysvisit
Please go to Myzaxby.com. Including sandwiches and wings, the American fast food company Zaxby is well-known for its chicken dishes. Be sure to preserve the receipt from your subsequent visit so you can compete to win $1000.
Zaxby conducts a customer satisfaction investigation. The survey is simple and merely requests your opinion on a few survey-related subjects. Additionally, they give you the opportunity to enter their contests in exchange for your time and labour. In this contest, one can win $1000 each day and $1500 each week.
But in order to participate and be successful, there are requirements and rules. In this essay, we'll go into greater detail regarding all of that and other things. For further details, see the instructions for completing the survey.
MyZaxbyVisit.com
The online poll from Zaxby was specifically chosen for their customers. It is used to find out what the general audience believes about their product. Decision-making typically depends heavily on survey results. Additionally, it offers customers a chance. You can offer feedback or recommendations.
Myzaxbysvisit.com You shouldn't need much time to finish the survey. You also get a brief opportunity to participate in the sweepstakes.
In addition to the customer survey, there are other options to join the giveaway. To finish the survey, you must buy something for Zaxby and show the receipt. Without a purchase receipt, offline procedures are accessible. We'll also cover the Mail involvement strategy.
Zaxby’s Survey Rules and Requirements
Get ready to participate. Look at the requirements and eligibility requirements.
You must have internet access on your PC or smartphone in order to access the survey because it is online.
You must have a current Zaxby purchase receipt in order to enter the survey code.
You must be 18 years of age or older on the entry date in order to participate in the contest.
Customers who are citizens or permanent residents of the US, UK, or Canada are also welcome.
The sweepstakes is not open to sponsors' employees.
The immediate families of employees are likewise ineligible.
Zaxby’s Survey Rules and Regulations
You now have the option of participating or not. In order to increase your chances of winning, review the rules.
Participation in the survey requires a purchase receipt. There is no alternate entrance.
Entry into a sweepstakes by phone or mail requires no purchase.
Because the drawing is entirely random, making a purchase has no impact on your chances of winning.
Each entry method is only permitted one entry per day.
About Zaxbys
Two boyhood buddies named Zach McLeroy and Tony Townley were motivated to open Zaxby's by a chicken-finger franchise. The first location of the restaurant was adjacent to Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia.
There were a lot of people who liked and knew Zaxby's chicken and Zax Sauce. In September 1994, the business opened its first restaurant outside of Georgia as it continued to grow.

OK, I've found the video charting 100 years of busses and trolley busses, (which has some great footage dated mostly to the 1950s, so check it out) so let's do this!
Note: I am by no means a historian by any stretch, this essay is fueled entirely by neurodivergent hyperfocus and a hatred of the British Government. the following should be taken as a condensed footnotes history of trolleybusses in the british Isles and will likely contain some bias. Take the following as gospel without further research at your own risk.
Compared to busses and trams the trolleybus enjoyed only a relatively short carreer of 60 years, but still grew to have systems present in over 50 towns and cities.
Map of historic trolleybus routes, created by Railmap-Online.
among the first trolley bus systems in the UK opened in 1911 in Leeds and Bradford, and early trolley busses of the 1910s and 1920s, like those produced by Richard Garrett & Sons (no connection to the Beyer-Garratt type locomotives), owed much of their design to trams of the era. At this time they were very much seen as "trackless trams" rather than "ellectric busses" and they were often introduced as a more flexible replacement for existing trams.
from the 1930s onwards the style had shifted towards one which would not only seem familiar running on the streets of Britain today, but also looked modern in comprison to their contempory internal combustion counterparts.
Between 1935 and 1940 trolleybusses exploded in London, growing to serve much of the city barring the south-east where the trams still held sway. At its peak the London fleet of trolleybusses comprised of some 1600 vehicles.
At this point the future of the trolley busses seemed secure, in fact one could be forgiven for looking at their rapid expansion and predicting that trolleybusses would grow to become the dominant form of public transport in the British Isles by the close of the 20th century.
"Knock-Knock, it's the British Government."
In 1947 the government enacted the Transport Act 1947, which saw the railways, canals, road haulage, and much of the transport corperations nationalised under Government control. On principle this is something I agree with, services that serve the public should be public owned, however as history has quite clearly shown if any country can cock-up such an undertaking, it's the British.
Around the same time, in 1948, the British Electricity Authority was formed to take over ownership and control of the island's electricity generating facilities
Prior to this the City & Town Corperations which handled public transport needs generated their own power, and profits easily covered the costs of fuel to supply those power stations.
Now in the post nationalisation system all the public transport systems, even the transport corperations handling busses and trolley busses that remained private, had to buy their own electricity off the government at significant costs.
This, coupled with a number of other factors such as decreased ridership owing to increasing car ownership, lead to the untimely death of the trolleybus in public use in March 1972, with Bradford City being the last hold-out, surving till then on second-hand hand-me-downs from other closed systems across the country.
Thankfully the humble British trolleybus has not enitely disapeared into the pages of history, a small handful of dedicated enthusiasts in the 1950s through to the 1970s have ensured that plentiful examples have survived, many in operating condition at select locations throughout the country, where one can still catch a ride on these historic vehicles. The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft, Lincolnshire, operates a bi-directional loop of wires and hosts an extensive collection of trolleybusses from around the world, including Belgium, Canada and Germany.
youtube
The East Anglia Transport Museum in Lowestoft also features working preserved trolleybusses, which operate on a large system alongside preserved vintage trams. The museum also periodically holds events dedicated to the trolleybus.
youtube
I realy should do a post on the history of British trolley busses to explain, as a transport enthusiast, how monumentally the British Government fucked up around the time that the General Motors Street Car Conspiracy ocurred in the US.

Hi i dont know if you know this but there was a twitter user doomtony who spread a lot of hate against sabre and then their followers started to bring it up to her here and forced her to deactivate. They also dragged sineala into it and harassed some other fic writers too. Please report their account for harassment so we can hopefully shut them down and prevent them from doing this to anyone else
In the past few years, for personal reasons I’ve been less active than usual in the fandom. I just read my daily amount of fics, lurking or buying some art and that’s it. I rarely come to tumblr and time to time I reblog something. I tried to join the PoTS Discord server but because English is not my native language, sometimes I feel overwhelmed to interact with people, even online (funny enough, I live in UK and I have to talk in English everyday) so I left it behind. This to say that I am a little bit out of the fandom dynamics.
That said, I am SICK of these situations. Sabre is not the first one harassed and probably she is not the last. I interacted with her just a couple of times and I found her a kind person, with a HUGE writing talent. I noticed, especially on Twitter, that young people are "rioting” accusing older fandom members to be predators, that they shouldn’t be active in fandom, that they are creeps and an insane amount of bullshit. Sometimes going deeper, targeting specific individuals that most of the times ends up forcing the “targets” deactivating their SM accounts and in worst cases, forcing them deleting their work. I AM SICK OF ALL OF THIS. Truly, deeply, sincerely sick. I am 37 years old, with a baggage of anxiety, loneliness and a bunch of other issues. I live far away from my family, my friends, my native culture. What I have is reading Stevetony fan fiction, fan arts and this bubble of happiness and joy that I live on my own and in my own terms. Silently, not harassing anyone, minding my own business. I am sick of this bunch of toddlers telling me I am a creep because at my age I am in a fandom or I enjoy doing nerdy stuff. I am SICK. I am sick that a bunch of FAKE WOKE kids tell me or my peers what we have to do, what we have to write, what we have to draw, what we have to read, just because we are 20+ years old.
I am sick of this BIGOTRY.
Pedophiles, predators, creeps exist. We all know that. But I can assure you that they are not the one who draw, read or write a Stevetony fic about a 17 years old and a 20 something years old. GROW UP, put down your damn smartphone and live a REAL life. You declare yourself woke, but you are the worst kind of AGEISTS AND MISOGYNISTS. Use your brain to analyse, research, THINK instead to parroting a bunch of slogan without rationalise first. THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES of your hatred, bigotry, venom. You don’t fucking know who there is behind an account, you don’t know which kind of struggle every single PERSON behind a nickname is facing. Don’t judge, think. Don’t be entitled. Be human. If you don’t like a fan fiction or an art, PASS ON. Just because you have a device internet equipped DOESN’T ALLOW YOU TO SPIT VENOM on other people work or life. Spend and focus your energy where it is ACTUALLY needed, out of your aesthetically pleasant rooms, out there in the real life.
Life it is not only black and white, life is full of greys. Writing long ass essays on Twitter doesn’t necessarly make you intellectuals, makes you fools if you don’t know what you are talking about. Life is already full of shit, REAL life is. Leave people alone and mind your fucking business.
Rant is done. I am done.
Thank you anon for the signal boost.
